      Amazing, I pre-ordered it already! I bought "The A500 Mini" on release day, and I have the C64 Maxi and repaired it already, though I didn't used it very much! The PCB broke out of it's holders, but thanks to hot glue everything is OK for some time (I remember your project with "The 9-bit Guy" and "Jan Beta" and someone)! ;-)

    I’m super excited. Arguably my favourite 8 bit computer. I have 2 of them. Also had an 800 which was sadly stolen from my collection. 2 words really cements why the 400 was a miracle machine ‘Star Raiders’

    I had a 400 - so wanted a 800 - I dreamed of owning that ! Loved playing preppie ..

    I'd rather have seen the 800 mini or maxi. That was the computer that I used to drool over in magazines back in the day whilst owning the Sinclair ZX81. Still, as the mini will probably not have a working keyboard and support emulation of other Atari Models as well then it could be a fascinating development.
    The Atari 800 looked like a typewriter and looked like a far more serious computer.

    The Atari 400 was my first computer as well. I remember arriving home and my dad already had it up and going into our small tv. He was typing in some basic programs. We also had the 410 program recorder - that was a very temperamental beast, always had to carefully watch the tape counter and save over twice for semi reliable storage. 800's and disk drives were always a bit out of our price range. But I loved that thing so much. Always wanted to do the 48k upgrade, but never did. And the keyboard upgrade. Star Raiders and Miner 2049er were my jams! Along with typing in basic programs from Antic and anywhere else I could find them. What a great time. Yeah - day 1 purchase for sure.

    Damn right I'm excited!!! 🥳 🎉
    I loved those old Atari 8 bit computers; I had an original 800 for a while, but then stupidly upgraded to an 800XL - the lure of extra RAM...!!!
    I will have to get one of these 400's though; used to sell them in shop where I worked back then; wasn't keen on the keyboard, but then we got the 800...Oh man; that really turned my head! The keyboards were great too!
    Can't wait for this 400 to come out though.... I need one!
    Thanks for the video... smile 😊 👍

    My rich friend had an Atari 800. He showed me the 256 color demos and graphics commands like drawto in Atari BASIC, 16 grayscale colors, built-in full-screen text-editor. In 1981 this was supercomputer stuff. When I found out the 400 had the same internals other than RAM I knew it was the dream computer that we could afford, and finally got my parents to upgrade from Pong.

    Finally a retro-flashback console worth talking about! Can't wait to hear more (most importantly will it support disc software (the very best of the 8-bit line), as well as cartridge emulation, and how does it deal with keyboard input (otherwise how do I get to the galactic map, warp drive and forward or aft views in Star Raiders.)
    Lots of questions, so looking forward to your review!!!!!

    I would love this! My first computer was an Atari 400 in 1981 to start college at Utah State University. I replaced the keyboard with an aftermarket keyboard so I didn't have to deal with the membrane keyboard. That, with a modem and tape drive and I was able to connect to the university, upload my papers to the print server, and pick them up the next day before class. I know this wouldn't be the same, but I'm sure it would be close enough.

    My first computer was the Timex Sinclair 1000, the Texas Instruments 99/4a, then an Atari 800XL. I recently got a FujiNet for my 130XE which is an insane cool piece of hardware. It is stupidly cool to load floppy images wirelessly directly over the internet and run apps the query data over the internet.

    This looks like the BEST candidate for being a mini console.
    I never was very patient and "kind" to my friend's Atari 400 back in the day, since I found the keyboard rather difficult to use. The same could be said for the Sinclair with the membrane "keyboard." Had that Sinclair for a few weeks in 1982 before I gave it away. After I received a Commodore for Christmas 1982, I was satisfied with my C64 until 1987 when I bought a Kaypro II PC clone for "business.".
    Very much looking forward to your report; I realise that I truly missed out on the lovely Atari 400 gaming scene. Seeing your take on it will be fun to watch! Aloha.

    I reckon it was about the winter of 1980 into 81. Top floor Bentall's there was a computer area. 2 lasting memories, Cloudy Mountain in the intellivision, Star Raiders on the Atari 800. I was hooked. Got an after school job, didn't last due to an misunderstanding where I got the blame. Just enough saved for a Sinclair Spectrum (though it was a coin toss as the Oric was about the same price, close call). First post school job, first pay packet went on an 800xl discounted in Dixons. Found Games World in Hammersmith. Lots of Atari games there (also Traveller when it was still the little Black Books). The Epsom indoor market was another source of games, also a tourist trap shop near my Grandparents in Great Yarmouth was a very happy hunting ground for cartridges.

    My first home computer was an 800 XL, which makes me something of a keyboard snob, frankly. 😏

    800XL would be perfect :) Still have it and a 130XE. It was my first Atari computer (a friend had the 800. was that second cartridge slot ever used?) I don't know how people typed anything on that 400 keyboard. fond memories in any case.

    The original Atari 400 had a keyboard and was a computer, not a games machine. So, cautiously optimistic, but look forward to hearing about how to hook up a keyboard. I found it another site: "Five USB ports which allow for the addition of a modern keyboard, extra joysticks and more." ---good. I'll pick one up.

      These are mostly intended for gaming, but can do much more. You can look up other products they've released such as THEC64 mini/maxi, VIC20 and THEA500 mini; All of them accept keyboard and other peripherals via USB, have great support and were well received by the community.

    I'm happy for the Atari 400 fans, although I was hoping that a 1:1 scale Amiga 500 would be next.
    I already own the full size VIC20 and the A500 Mini. But maybe it will come at some point in the near future.
    (Btw: An Atari ST-FM or ST-E fullsize would also be great).

    In the open so many games that were C64 games, were seemingly on the Atari400, cool! Which are ports of the C64, and which were originals that were ported to the C64 I wonder! XD

    I'm actually interested in this one... not really to use, but to put up on a display with some of my other mini's (I have my childhood 800 still). I think in this case, being a mini is perfectly fine since the keyboard was pretty useless anyway. It's unlikely this will ever become a 'maxi' and that's probably fine. I love the fact that this have the 4 usb ports in the front and comes with MULE to make use of them.

    Is there going to be a USA 🇺🇸 release of this? Plus like the C64 mini and a500 mini it’s limited to a certain amount of games (25) where would you get more? I recently sold my c64 mini & maxi and my a500 mini. Selling a500 I think was a major mistake so I will be buying another one. Again like the c64 series it was a good but it was a little bit of a pain to get new games for it. What is the price going to be $120-150 here in the states? Only one controller and limited games are not a good deal. Sorry for the long post. Have a good day.

    I know it's silly, but I still think they should make the keyboard one that works...
    Yeah, it would be tiny, but probably about the same size as my TS1000 (ZX81) keyboard. ;-)
    This looks great. Love my 400...

    Wonder if the keyboard works, or if you'd use a USB keyboard plugged into one of the ports? Does it have SIO support? Like everyone that gets a mini-version of a computer, fun to use as a newer computer. :D

    • @brianv2871
      @brianv2871 4 місяці тому

      it's a mini, so no real keyboard.. you'd plug a usb keyboard in. It won't have an SIO connector, they never have the original connectors or cartridge slots or anything like that.

    • @doctorclu
      @doctorclu 4 місяці тому

      @@brianv2871 Makes sense. I think for an 8-bit for function and form a mini-XEGS would have been better. That one had a plug in keyboard, and otherwise was a box. But they are probably going for nostalgia in look. And as a 400 user, it is working.
