    The mod sort of easys the issue, but having more clearance around the pins just lets larger pieces of gravel/sand,dirt in to still jam the pins in. This needs a re think by Arrma on this design.

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  10 місяців тому +3

      That may be true There are other designs out there that have pins and holes that don't have this problem because they have more clearance. At least with my test which was pretty extrem as far as dust and sand goes, with the enlarged holes, the body removed fairly easily. Still got a little bit stuck but not bad. I really can't imagine anybody bashing in a more dusty environment than I did in that video. The dust is so thick that I literally lost sight of the car multiple times and it was like 15 ft away from me :-)

      @@make4all2000 I don't think it would matter. The type of particulate that's going to jam up that close of a fit is going to get in pretty much no matter what you do. I bash in The same kind of stuff that you saw in that video all the time and I assure you it gets everywhere including inside sealed bearings.

  • @gillian9178

    This design worked ok on the Fireteam with the wheels way out from the body & the pins. Problem with the Mojave having the wheels inside the body & in direct line with the pins, debris off the wheels is driven in pretty hard directly at the pins. Hope things are worked out ok as the Mojave is a nice truck indeed.

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  10 місяців тому +2

      The fire team design is a little bit different. The pins are tapered and go into more shallow holes which makes it less likely for them to get jammed up. I'm not certain that where the debris is coming from is even much of a factor. When you're bashing in fine sand or dust like in the video it gets literally everywhere. In my opinion the tight tolerance is the main problem because it allows very fine dust to get in between the two and then basically gall the plastic together from friction. Increasing the space will allow larger pieces of debris in there but I don't think those larger pieces of debris will actually cause the pins to seize in the holes. At least in my testing it's been pretty good. They still get a little stuck but they're relatively much easier to remove.

    Great video! I'm amazed that this is really the only issue anyone's finding/complaining about. Of all the problems we could be having with these new rigs, for example maybe the center diff design could be flawed, for this to be the only real issue is great! The truck is awesome and this issue seems to have sorted itself out with mine on its own. I can't find anything to dislike about this rig!

I am going to rip it in less dusty areas first and hopefully it does some sort of breaking in. Might just need a very light breakin to allow the pins to settle without the seizing issue. How was it out of the box before running it, was the removal difficult then or did it seem tight?

      @gueychacho really don't think you're going to have anything to worry about. @@Reekohswahvay first run was actually VERY difficult. My dad had to grab the bumpers and I grabbed the roof roll bars and we pulled pretty hard. Now it's easier for sure though. You might want to bring a hammer and screwdriver of some sort the first run to knock the pins out through the bottom. But after that, you can probably just use gravity and hold by the roll cage and kinda drop/pull motion until it pops off. I ran today and it was a little harder than the last couple times, but still very manageable. Shouldn't run you away from the truck though! Thing is an absolute blast

  • @ninthislandrc
    @ninthislandrc 10 місяців тому +5

    You're not the first to discover this flaw, and everyone knows you won't be the last. And, in truth, is actually TWO flaws - the second flaw is the poorly-placed on/off switch. As you, and Earl Morehead, have both pointed out, because of where the power switch is, if someone is unable to remove the body, they are also unable to turn off the vehicle.
    A SERIOUS "FAIL" on Arrma’s/Horizon Hobby's part...and, one that, in my opinion, should lead to all sales being stopped, and a recall issued. RTR means "ready to run", NOT "modifications REQUIRED in order to safely run". If a body is stuck, and a Lipo fire occurs, this would a SERIOUS problem.

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  10 місяців тому +5

      I don't think the on-off switch is poorly placed as long as you can take the body off. Plenty of RC cars require taking the body off in order to access the switch. As far as what Horizon should do I'm probably not going to get into that because I think Earl has that covered.
      I figured enlarging the holes would mostly take care of the issue and based on my testing it seems to be pretty effective.
      I've heard multiple people say that even without doing that they loosen up pretty quickly. Of course that doesn't help if you don't enlarge the holes and you have a lipo fire on the second pack. Thanks for watching :-)

    • @Krapper515
      @Krapper515 10 місяців тому +3

      Earl really seemed upset about this. And I'm not sure why. It's not that big of a deal. After about 3-4 runs it stopped being so tight. I wouldn't even say modification is required, just a couple tries and it's absolutely fine.

    • @DoRC

      @Krapper515 I could understand being upsetting. Spending a bunch of money on something that has an obvious design flaw like that especially one that can cause real problems is pretty annoying. I don't think I would personally go to the level that he did but it still shouldn't happen.

      I can understand him being upset to some degree. It does represent a potential safety issue if you have a catastrophic failure and can't get the body off. Something that seems so obvious feels like it never should happen. That being said small changes between validation samples of a product and the production run can sometimes result in these sorts of issues. It doesn't take much of a tolerance difference to go from having just enough clearance for this not to be a major problem to having not enough clearance and for it to become a major problem.

    • @DoRC

    I Think a flat on the pin might also work leave a nice gap for dirt

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  10 місяців тому +3

      Maybe though unless you made it pretty large I think you'll still have the same problem without enlarging the hole. The issue right now is that they're so tight that very fine dust gets in there and kind of galls the plastic causing it to jam up on itself. Increasing that gap means that larger debris can get in there but I don't think larger debris going actually prevent you from removing the body. Just making a flat spot on it might not prevent that plastic galling from happening.

    I was thinking you could smash some foam around the pin

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  10 місяців тому +1

      I really don't think that'll work. The type of fine particulate that is causing the pins to jam is going to get everywhere no matter what you do. It's not really a matter of just trying to block off the top It's going to get in there anyway. In this case short of figuring out some way to actually hermetically seal that system The only option that I can think of is to increase the clearance between the pin and hole.

  • @mangoito
    @mangoito 7 місяців тому +1

    Could another option be to sock up the pins with foam boots glued on the upper end to prevent the boot from scooting upwards while body shell actuates? In theory, it should keep dust away from the inner side hole.
    I’ll try it out once the unit arrives.

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  7 місяців тому +2

      I'm not sure that would matter. Dust is going to get in from underneath of from above even if you do try to seal it off. The size of particular that's going to be a problem to these pins is small enough that unless you actually completely sealed the whole thing off it's still going to get in there. It's pretty much a non-issue though. If you want to drill them out drill them out otherwise most people have found that after a few packs they tend to loosen up on their own a little bit.

So far enlarging the holes has prevented that from happening. They still don't fall apart after bashing in deep sand and dust but they also aren't impossible to take a part anymore.

    They (arrma) should of stuck w/ fireteam pins! Instead of reversing it & putting holes in chasis & pins in body!

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  10 місяців тому +1

      The difference isn't so much the location of the pins but the design itself. The fire team has tapered pins with shallow mating holes. That pretty much eliminates the possibility of any sort of jamming up.

    Hi DoRC guy, I'm thinking of downsizing my RC fleet I have the Rival MT10 and Arrma Big Rock 3S BLX they're both great but I might think of selling them. Then I might get this Mojave 4S what do you reckon? And how does the Mojave compare to my 2 trucks I know it's bigger.

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  9 місяців тому +2

      Whereas the Mojave is a really fun truck I'm not sure It really directly compares to what you currently have. What you have right now are two monster truck style bashers and this is more of a short course truck / desert truck. It's not really that well suited for stunts. It's more of an off-road on the ground ripper. If you enjoy jumps and backflips and whatnot you might want to consider the outcast 4S as opposed to the Mojave 4S.

      @@DoRCThanks for the input, I used to have the Losi Lasernut it was great but sold it decided to keep the Big Rock and Rival MT10 instead. So I just might these 2 instead, I'm not really a basher driver I just speed runs and occasional jumps I look after my trucks not drive like that Kevin Talbot bloke who heavily bashes Arrma trucks until it breaks then drive them even more bashing until completely dead undriveable.

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  10 місяців тому +1

      It's probably more likely that the tolerances were different on their validation samples. The validation samples probably had issues with the body's getting slightly stuck but not so much that it was actually a problem. The tighter tolerances caused very fine particulate to essentially gall the plastic and seize it up.

  • @RC4us
    @RC4us 10 місяців тому +2

    I don’t think it’s all the dirt I think it has to do with the tight tolerance an when you roll it or land upside down you really smashing the pins into the hole that why it gets stuck if anything I think the dirt would let the pins be loose but after a few runs it wears right in an is as easy as butter since you did this I will NOT do just to see if what you did was actually necessary or just being impatient lol

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  10 місяців тому +5

      Maybe though I have run this not in sand like that and the lid doesn't get stuck on it. For my experience the more dusty the terrain the worse it gets stuck on.
      And yes they definitely will loosen up over time but that's not going to help someone who has a lipo fire the second time they take it out and can't take the body off. Not saying it's super likely to happen but I think it's worth the extra couple of minutes to drill the holes out for peace of mind.

      I think having the body locked onto the chassis especially if you had something like an ESC fire would be a big deal. Fortunately it seems to be a pretty straightforward fix and I've even had other people tell me that after several packs the pins themselves tend to wear in and don't stick as much.
      I'm just glad to be able to help where I can :-) Thanks for watching!

    Wait. Instead of demanding Arrma recall, buy back, and totally redesign the truck, you just figured out a simple 1 minute fix??
    I appreciate a positive, can do attitude much more than whining dramatics. I'll wait and see if mine wears in before doing any drilling.
    If you wanna avoid all risk i guess you'd stay inside wrapped in bubble wrap all day.

    • @DoRC

      Yeah seems like a pretty simple solution and there's plenty of plastic around those holes so I don't think you're going to be weakening the structure. It's not great that the problem exists and it is possible that this solution won't work for everyone but seems to work well for me certainly doesn't take long to implement to find out.

      @DoRC  10 місяців тому +2

      It was actually a comment somebody made on a Facebook group about his video that inspired me to make mine. I had the same problem with my body but since It's been a really long time since I've had an ESC or lipo fire The potential consequences of not being able to get the body off didn't really occur to me. Once I realized that I realized that both the mod and the video were worth doing. Plus I like to provide a solution with a problem not just the problem :-) Thanks for watching!

      You mean the mountain out of a mole hill video? New designs have issues, if this is the worst one on the truck then I'm comfortable giving them my money.

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  10 місяців тому +1

      @boduke9428 to be fair I can understand being upset. Spending a bunch of money on something just for it to have such an obvious and potentially even dangerous issue is fairly frustrating.
      I guess I'm so used to every vehicle having some problem or another that having to enlarge a couple of holes just doesn't really bother me but again I can Why it would be upsetting.

      @DoRC  10 місяців тому +2

      Yeah it's not the best design but drilling the holes out pretty much takes care of the problem. In super dusty conditions the body will still get a little bit stuck but it's not going to prevent you from removing it
