This is epic advice! I learned over 10 years, the plastic diff cover always s flex. That separates the ring gear under load th cause damage, in higher powered systems. The use an aluminum diff cover, never have a stopped diff again: I have a lot of tricks, I may make a must have parts build soon. But great vid and I’ve never shimmed these, I’ll start doing it, thanks my man!!!!

@DoRC excellent video! I’m curious now days as you’ve experimented so much what oil for F/C/R you run on XRT or suggest? I feel Traxxas spends no time on sorting more optimum oil weights in these from factory.
I'm not actually very skilled at differential tuning but normally I would just run ear plugs in the center differential and 100K front and rear. I can't say that's the best setup but it works well for me.

Awesome thank you! I don't really run spools. I primarily do bashing and have found in the past that completely locking a differential tends to start breaking things. The differentials allow forces to be dissipated through the drivetrain and eliminating them causes those forces to put a lot of stress on things and tends to break things. Unless you're doing speed runs I would suggest keeping the differentials intact and if you really want them to be stiff try running silicone ear plugs. Those will nearly lock the differentials while still allowing them to have a little bit of give to dissipate shock loads.
I did my shims before I saw your video. So I found that I had to shim the differential first. To take up the slop between the bearings side to side motion. If taking up the slop is taken away with the pinon gear the one side will still have the distance to move around. So I figured it had to not have room to move. Then shimmed the pinon gear like you showed. I keep reading this and not sure if I make sense. Just my thoughts Have fun
Yeah some vehicles need the diff shimmed side to side and some don't. I have found that the X-Max rarely does but it's just going to depend on what combination of parts you have. Generally speaking the gears will always try to be pushing away from each other so it should push the differential further away taking up any slack under power. Great video bud nice information I've got the new arrma vorteks brushed 2wd but now I've upgraded to 4x4 brushless. So I've putting a difference in front 🤔
In my experience the 3S and 4S arrmas usually have pretty tight diffs but you can definitely check. You'd have to check with the Arrma groups are just make your own measurements to find shims that would work if you do want to shim them. I haven't ever shimmed one because I've never needed to so I don't have shim specifications for them.
Good to know. Yeah as long as you can get them in that size and reasonably thin you can use pretty much whatever you can find. Probably not. If you're getting clicking it means that the gears you currently have are likely damaged. If you replace the gears and then shim it should prevent it from happening again though assuming everything else that the differential is attached to is in good condition. So did your XRT hubs\knuckles whichever you call them , were the inner bearings so loose they call out if you turn it upside down ? I bought them for my XMAXX and was surprised at the slop compared to any other hub bearing assembly I've ever got from traxxas and I've had a lot of them. They always have been very snug to the point ther almost hard to put it.. but not the xrt oversized bearing\hubs. Loose goose and gave my tires more play\slop
Do you recommend adding any gear oil of some type once you figured out what shims you need to run? Newbie here so I was curious if any should to be added

@@DoRCshims came in this morning Threw them in and what a difference they made on my new xmaxx I only took it out once so far So it suprised me with how much play there was after one run. Its almost like i had to break in the gears and shim them after first run Like I had to re-space my rear wheel on my losi promoto after the first run breaking in the chain Thanks again 👍
@@OGPAPERBOY77 Yeah everything does wear in a little bit from new so it will all loosen up a little bit. I usually shim slightly on the tight side to accommodate for this with a new setup. I don't really want to recommend that in a video just because it's easy to go too far and end up causing problems. Glad it's working for you!
My diffs have 0 play. How do I add a little play. You mentioned the pinion being able to move forward or back but you didn’t show it going back off the diff. Need to get mine out
In this case if you have binding with no shimming you're only option would be to try to get a shim on the side of the differential that would push it away from the pinion. The opinion will naturally already be as far away from the ring gear as it can be. I'm not sure what size shims it would take for that as I've never really needed to shim that part of the differential on these vehicles. If it's only very slightly binding you can probably get away with just running them as they will wear in a bit at the beginning and should free up.

On my xmaxx the motor gets very hot, I took it apart and seems ok inside but before putting bk in truck I had motor in my hand and pressed throttle n didn't take long to get hot again. Any help please?
With no load a lot of brushless motors will get hot very quickly. That being said when you say it gets very hot exactly how hot is it getting and under what That being said when you say it gets very hot in the truck exactly what temperature is it getting to and under what conditions?
@DoRC after using it for bout 20mins at skatepark doin jumps it slows down then motor stops completely. I turned it off, then bk on again n it was ok for bout 30seconds then it slowed down again.
@chriscottell6854 okay that doesn't necessarily mean that the motor's overheating though. That sounds like low voltage cut off is kicking in because your battery is depleted.
It really just depends on what the tolerance stack up ends up being on your particular setup. Sometimes you don't need any shims at all and sometimes you need some combination of those. The only way to know for your particular differential is to experiment and see how many shims you can get in without it binding.
I have a XRT with a castle system I’ve done all I can to try to keep the difs tight and not loose I found I only need one 0.5 shim and my vitavon difs are still screaming I put brand new ones in and still clicking I gave it a bit of bashing and took the car completely apart and the ring and pinon looked the same as they went in and I’ve been doing all I can and nothing broke and I’m still having problems it make hell sounding clicking and I change it and put a 0.1 shim and it was still not working new bottom bulkhead and no shim or a 0.1 to 0.5 still not working I’m at a lost right now I’ve been so mad at it I don’t even play with it anymore I just go to my arrma any kinda of info anyone and I mean anyone than you can give me mite help?
Let me add to that I have all vitvon difs and only ever having problems with the back I’m kinda mad on how much money I’ve put in to just gears alone at it’s still clicking.
@@DoRC I think it’s the center diff it’s hard to tell I gave it hell and the difs show no signs of wear on the inside or the ring gear so I’m so confused. I have earplugs in the center with I hear some people don’t like them I love how it drove but now with the castle system it won’t stop clicking. I think I’m gonna take them out and put 1mill in the center but I’ve never had a problem where it’s clicking this bad and nothing’s broken.
No that's kind of the nature of the beast with the X-Max. It's not retained axially in any way. Just shim it with the pinion pushed all the way up against the bearing so you get an accurate mesh.
@@webbyhawk5643 oh. Well you can shim it toward the ring gear if there's room or can add shims on the outside between the bearing and the input cup but ultimately it's probably not going to hurt anything and most RC cars have a little bit of play.
@@DoRC I was never able to find shims for my x-max and I ended up taking my 1100 KV out of it because I was chewing up diffs and stuff and sick of it now that I can share them maybe I can put it back in there cuz I sure do miss it
@@blacksheeprc8113 Yeah having the differentials properly shimmed absolutely helps! I would also suggest getting the aluminum differential housing and an aluminum diff cover if you don't already have them. It stiffens everything up and really helps prevent flex in the gear area

As stated in the video there's no specific number. You have to check and shim for each individual differential because the shimming is specifically designed to accommodate tolerances that happen in manufacturing.

That may have happened but most of what I was doing was just exemplifying for the video. All meshes were checked off camera to make sure that they were right before assembly.
And this finely "tuned" meshing will mash together when landing a jump, hard or hitting something hard and the gears have no room to take up what the plastic around them can. Excessive play sure put a shim in there. Making it perfect with no play = great, for a youtube vid but these cars are not designed to be working with lower tolerances. Better advice - check how it is out the box. Make note. bash it. test again. if in 1 year stuff is breaking, then use the warrantee. I was annoyed that litre use as my (new to the hobby) son trashed the original servo then TWO more ""upgrade parts" JUST by driving around. A "cheaper" savox has been working fine for nearly 2 years but it's way underpowered. I Ordered the monster perfect pass 56kg one with great reviews so we'll see. I'm not criticising your vid as you are probably a perfectionist like me. I will say however in the real world with these trucks, it can get more expensive by tampering with parts you don't need to...... (Unless you get money for bad advice and from traxxas like it to sell more broken gears? 🙂) The truck parts looks really new. bearings too.
I've been using the same process for many years now with dozens of vehicles and it's served me very well. I've also recommended it both before making this video and through this video to a lot of people and I've never heard anybody say that they had a problem caused by this process. You're a lot more likely to have a problem that's caused by the gears separating too far apart than anything that will happen by them potentially being pushed together temporarily. I definitely understand your concern but this is a tried and true procedure.
@@DoRC Fair enough, i'l tatke your word for it. Kev's channel doesn't have this on the list for new cars but then again as I said my new one somehow ate 2 "Upgraded" X version metal servos in less than 5 charges while not doing a lot. (Open field speed with holding turns SHOULD be ok IMO) The failure wasn't in the gears but in the electronics. Both just stopped dead. We should do some comparisons with a couple of brand new trucks and note the consistency or lack of. I think we are both right. As wish this hobby nothing is for free. There is almost always a trade off somewhere. Credits to a great explanation of how to use shims at the end of the day. Every user has different conditions to abuse their machines :-) I have hidden small tree stumps that if you catch in the perfect storm it can really do some damage. A tip for all you guys is in a wooded area, pace out the track area and check for hidden surprises. I avoided a costly crash as the leaves and ferns falling this time of year in Germany had hidden a rock solid stump that disguised itself as a small mound begging for a lot of speed for some nice air time for my son learning. The "little jump" was a dead end in disguise!

I've been a professional mechanic for 20 years so I've got a decent amount of experience on the technical end of things. Obviously I'm subject to being wrong but at least in my experience the closer you can get the gears without them binding the better.
@@DoRCI'm completely with you as an engineer myself (Electronic, communications more than mechanical, but 23 years civilian and 10 years military) (on a ship you may have to make a repair) though the mechanical part of me 100% agrees with what you are doing but I maintain keeping thing too "Perfect" with static loads on a bench isn't the same as real use. Impacts will pass the energy into the gear then the bearing and housing. Traxas stock gears are crap but I think from experienced guys like yourself the diff gears are ok. Hey we can test! If you start seeing more wear than with 1 less ,3mm shim, then that's the sweet spot. Ships twist in bad weather as do building and bridges sway. I cringed when he (kev) stuffed ear plugs into a diff! He get's views for breaking stuff too so money is no object..It get's a bit annoying after a while seeing your boy upset for a 17Eu lower arm + upper arm + shock strut + lower shock mount plus (i only found this 2 years later) upper front bulkhead 7720X with a corner that fell away upon service. So the 17Eu isn't. We build up spares though that way. Money isn't the thing so much as an engineering mind doesn't deliberately destroy things with no actual scientific learning from it. Kev laughs, destroys them and gets clicks that pay for the above to be possible. I just subbed BTW. I prefer your approach to this sport and ill defo check out more vids. Thanks buddy. I don't remember specifically on those but I have had some that were looser than others. Never really seemed too affect the functionality though

I don't think so. The bearings and the max are quite a bit smaller if I remember correctly.

@DoRC sorry I don't no the temperature it keeps getting too, it just keeps slowing down then nothing.

Yeah it's luck of the draw. Sometimes you can get away with it but sometimes you can't.
Which shim are you using.. the 0.1 or 0.2, 0.3...

No that's kind of the nature of the beast with the X-Max. It's not retained axially in any way. Just shim it with the pinion pushed all the way up against the bearing so you get an accurate mesh.
@@DoRC okay so I'm talking about on a sledge so should I shim it at all or just leave it? It doesn't move a ton but definitely some play there.
@@webbyhawk5643 oh. Well you can shim it toward the ring gear if there's room or can add shims on the outside between the bearing and the input cup but ultimately it's probably not going to hurt anything and most RC cars have a little bit of play.

@@DoRC I was never able to find shims for my x-max and I ended up taking my 1100 KV out of it because I was chewing up diffs and stuff and sick of it now that I can share them maybe I can put it back in there cuz I sure do miss it
@@blacksheeprc8113 Yeah having the differentials properly shimmed absolutely helps! I would also suggest getting the aluminum differential housing and an aluminum diff cover if you don't already have them. It stiffens everything up and really helps prevent flex in the gear area

How many shim front and back
As stated in the video there's no specific number. You have to check and shim for each individual differential because the shimming is specifically designed to accommodate tolerances that happen in manufacturing.

Pay attention man. When you pulled the pinion out the 2nd time a shim flew off so you removed not one but TWO shims. Smh.
That may have happened but most of what I was doing was just exemplifying for the video. All meshes were checked off camera to make sure that they were right before assembly.
And this finely "tuned" meshing will mash together when landing a jump, hard or hitting something hard and the gears have no room to take up what the plastic around them can.
Excessive play sure put a shim in there. Making it perfect with no play = great, for a youtube vid but these cars are not designed to be working with lower tolerances.
Better advice - check how it is out the box. Make note. bash it. test again.
if in 1 year stuff is breaking, then use the warrantee.
I was annoyed that litre use as my (new to the hobby) son trashed the original servo then TWO more ""upgrade parts" JUST by driving around. A "cheaper" savox has been working fine for nearly 2 years but it's way underpowered. I Ordered the monster perfect pass 56kg one with great reviews so we'll see.
I'm not criticising your vid as you are probably a perfectionist like me. I will say however in the real world with these trucks, it can get more expensive by tampering with parts you don't need to......
(Unless you get money for bad advice and from traxxas like it to sell more broken gears? 🙂)
The truck parts looks really new. bearings too.
I've been using the same process for many years now with dozens of vehicles and it's served me very well. I've also recommended it both before making this video and through this video to a lot of people and I've never heard anybody say that they had a problem caused by this process. You're a lot more likely to have a problem that's caused by the gears separating too far apart than anything that will happen by them potentially being pushed together temporarily.
I definitely understand your concern but this is a tried and true procedure.
@@DoRC Fair enough, i'l tatke your word for it. Kev's channel doesn't have this on the list for new cars but then again as I said my new one somehow ate 2 "Upgraded" X version metal servos in less than 5 charges while not doing a lot. (Open field speed with holding turns SHOULD be ok IMO) The failure wasn't in the gears but in the electronics. Both just stopped dead. We should do some comparisons with a couple of brand new trucks and note the consistency or lack of. I think we are both right. As wish this hobby nothing is for free. There is almost always a trade off somewhere.
Credits to a great explanation of how to use shims at the end of the day. Every user has different conditions to abuse their machines :-) I have hidden small tree stumps that if you catch in the perfect storm it can really do some damage. A tip for all you guys is in a wooded area, pace out the track area and check for hidden surprises. I avoided a costly crash as the leaves and ferns falling this time of year in Germany had hidden a rock solid stump that disguised itself as a small mound begging for a lot of speed for some nice air time for my son learning. The "little jump" was a dead end in disguise!
@@grahamnumber7123 No offense to Kevin but he's not really the most technical person in the world. I've been a professional mechanic for 20 years so I've got a decent amount of experience on the technical end of things.
Obviously I'm subject to being wrong but at least in my experience the closer you can get the gears without them binding the better.
@@DoRCI'm completely with you as an engineer myself (Electronic, communications more than mechanical, but 23 years civilian and 10 years military) (on a ship you may have to make a repair) though the mechanical part of me 100% agrees with what you are doing but I maintain keeping thing too "Perfect" with static loads on a bench isn't the same as real use. Impacts will pass the energy into the gear then the bearing and housing. Traxas stock gears are crap but I think from experienced guys like yourself the diff gears are ok.
Hey we can test! If you start seeing more wear than with 1 less ,3mm shim, then that's the sweet spot. Ships twist in bad weather as do building and bridges sway.
I cringed when he (kev) stuffed ear plugs into a diff! He get's views for breaking stuff too so money is no object..It get's a bit annoying after a while seeing your boy upset for a 17Eu lower arm + upper arm + shock strut + lower shock mount plus (i only found this 2 years later) upper front bulkhead 7720X with a corner that fell away upon service. So the 17Eu isn't. We build up spares though that way. Money isn't the thing so much as an engineering mind doesn't deliberately destroy things with no actual scientific learning from it.
Kev laughs, destroys them and gets clicks that pay for the above to be possible.
