    Lance Armstrong an athlete the world will look back on as we look back now on the Spartans.

    • @christopherhanna5754
      @christopherhanna5754 5 років тому

      the Spartans were fierce warriors who served the state and thier form of democracy while brutalizing those who they enslaved they were fierce, they were unrelenting in battle, and they served with utmost loyalty to death to each other and thier code. Lance Armstrong's a guy who rode a bike fast and took drugs to win races for game and money and bullied the people who would have outed him for it...... There's really no damn comparison at all......

    I used to be a die hard fan of Lance. Not anymore. I don't talk down on him as I don't have the right to do so. When he was doping, all the other top riders were on drugs so it was a level playing field in that respect. But the biggest difference is that Lance really did wage a brutal war on anyone who questioned his honesty. Many of those people were no saints either and were just looking for their 15 minutes of fame by trying to pull Lance down, I'll give you that. But still it was a very nasty business from him indeed, he pretty much tried everything to ruin those people's lives. I still regard him as an exceptionally talented and amazing athlete, nobody in their right minds would question that. I just lost my respect for him as a decent human being.

      Richard Serban Good summary. I would add that when a lie has gotten as big as it did (almost considered a god amongst men, fighting cancer, livestrong etc) it becomes almost impossible to tell the whole truth, and you would do almost anything in order to maintain the lie. Cant say most men wouldn't have done the same, although it takes a "sociopathic" personality to get to that stage in the first place.

    • @jackhammer111

      He fought back against people who are actively trying to destroy him like Walsh and like the absolutely despicable Greg lemond.

    • @andrewc0128
      @andrewc0128 6 років тому +5

      Carbon, I get what you are saying, but as TheSteninbitt wrote, he was a sociopath who tried to stop his lie from getting out, so he actively tried to bully those who were trying to tell the truth. I cant say who started their side first, Lance being a bully and trying to destroy lives or those who were telling their story, but the thing of it is, he was in the wrong, so he should have just admitted it and used "EVERYONE was doping" as an argument. I already knew that everyone was, so I would have supported him, and other people like me, if he would have simply said "Yeah, you got me. I doped like a MFer, and this is how I did it."

    For LA it was all about him first team last and sure he cycled but was he truly into cycling like the other guys were as most of them would only do cycling. I think Lance was a triathlete and to be a great cyclist at the pro level he had to resort to drugs and boosting to win. Until he got cancer and lost weight he was not really up there in the top end. I believe that the loss of weight and the drugs gave him the edge in pro cycling.

    Why do people get so angry about things that really don't involve them? Sounds like a character flaw to me.
    I hope he returns to competition and wins to prove he can still outdo everyone without drugs. Sure, the training he was able to accomplish while on PEDs may have given him an edge after all these years, but there is no way to confirm that. He did more good than bad when looking at the sum of everything. It's time for redemption.

    Regardless if all other cyclists were on drugs also I still don't know why you would want to do it as well. How could you truly feel you accomplished a victory knowing deep down you cheated? And he did overcome cancer and still did what he loved to do which was race on the bike.

    I agree Lance was a dumbass, I agree he intimidated others for his benefit. I'm reluctantly glad he was busted to "clean up" the cycling sport. There is no making excuses for what he did. There are no apologies loud enough or sincere enough to take away his guilt and shame. All of us who loved and admired him are saddened by his total lack of humility. It WAS a waste...a waste of a career, a waste of effort and it became misdirected anger and hostility at teammates. All of his accomplishments are gone, even beating cancer - as nobody cares. In spite of this Lance was one of the greatest competitors ever to ride a bicycle. This is not an excuse but, oh so many doped at the top level. To be competitive he doped or lost. In hindsight - he should have lost, But that's not Lance, that's not cycling of the 2000s. The UCI didn't award the next person the Tour yellow because they knew so many doped that they couldn't sort it all out. If there was testing in the 1950s - 1990s many other "Heros" mentioned on here might have been busted. Lance, you're a dumbass, but I wish I had 1/10 of your competitive spirit and determination.

    It is easy to forget how talented and driven this guy is, even at 16 Lance was beating 25 and 30 year old pro triathletes. He was unlucky to be in an era of cycling where everyone doped, it overshadowed how good he really was because people think that he won only because he cheated. If everyone including lance were clean he still would have won and people that know pro cycling well all admit that Lance is still an all time great if not the greatest of all time.

      Uh... no. He is a quintessential narcissist, a liar, a bully, a fraud, a thief. He's a legend alright... but the legend is about how NOT to act as a professional athlete... or as a human being. It's true that in perspective of other travesties it might not seem like much, but the fact remains that while Lance Armstrong was an amazing athlete, he was also a cheat, one that ruined the sport for many others.

    • @gremice31

      I'm sorry but as some one who enjoys sport, I believe in fair play by all those who compete, the idea that lance is a great guy because other people were cheating is insanity. Also of course some kid dying of dehydration is a bigger issue but it's also a very separate issue, who are you to tell me what to have opinions on? Lance was utterly ruthless to those who spoke out against what he did, that in my view makes him a very bad human being. He is a man without integrity or a conscience. He has cast a long lasting dark shadow on a great sport.

    If he was a wealthy banker would you cry foul? For those bankers who cheated people, is it ok because others were doing it too?

    Livestrong is a positive message. It's personal. It's the day to day. This is the true gift of Lance Armstrong. He is not responsible for how you play the game or the expectations required of the endorsers or the bar that the sport itself raises on each individual athlete. The blame should be shared by all.

    Alright, haven't you all (commenters) beaten this to death already?
    Ok, Armstrong doped, but let's put some things into perspective:
    1) You and I probably weren't professional cyclists in the early 2000s. We have no real bearing or gauge on the scale and pressure of doping in this time other than the testimony and confessions of the riders and teams which experienced it.
    1b) There is good ground to assume most cyclists in this era were doping, the best example being 1998, the 'Tour du Dopage'.
    2) He doped in cycling. Here we are now in triathlon, and I, despite never supporting Armstrong, am quite disappointed in the way some people are reacting. Unless or until there is some kind of proof that Armstrong is doping still, his tri results are completely valid and respectable.
    3) A kind of double standard is being set in the Armstrong hate comments, in that nobody really had or has much argument about Ullrich, Vinokourov, Contador, E. Merckx, and many other famous cyclists who doped in their career.

    • @jackaledful

      The difference between Armstrong those other guys was he used his position to intimidate and damaged people lives. I liked Armstrong, until I read about how he treated the people trying to tell the truth. You should read how he fucked over Greg LeMond, the only American to legitimately win the Tour de France. The man is a national disgrace, not as much over the doping, as to his unethical behavior and conduct toward others.
