      Bought my reMarkable v1 used from ebay 2 years ago and use it all the time for supplier audit. Works out a lot cheaper than buying the equivalent paper notebooks and easier to search for specific information. I found it to be very robust. I have a Note 10 plus 5g and a Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 tablet but still use the reMarkable more of the time.
      I'd like to justify buying the v2 but can't because my v1 is still working really well and, for me, the upgrade isn't quite worth the money, sadly.....

    I dont understand how people compare this with iPad or tablets is two different things. This is for people that likes to write on paper but are tired of walking around with so many notebooks and books. And also like me I hate the glare screen and does lights hitting the eyes. This is like a real paper but you can do what paper can't

      What do you think about options like the Rocketbook for 35 US dollars? Not exactly a paper feel, but light, small, removes the need for paper mostly and so much cheaper. Plus, you can choose different color pens, different styles of thickness, tips and highlighters in whatever color you want.

      @@michaeldurkin8659 I have a Rocketbook, operates more like a white board with a pen than paper and pencil. If I'm taking notes in class, I hate erasing, bc it smudges all over. Also, you have to use Frixion pens or something of the like, which don't always write well in a Rocketbook. I like the reMarkable bc it doesn't have glare and doesn't feel like ur writing on glass. It's not paper, but it's better than a tablet for those that do prefer paper. Still, it's really expensive for what it does.

    Hello,
    I use thé rM since about 3 years; it replaced most of my note books either at work and my personal notes ... So I got rid of most of free papers around ... I like it very much !! I use the folders and notebooks to organize projects and themes. It is very light to carry it at work and use it as if you had several notebooks ! I have an iPad Pro as well with the paperlike cover ... But the rM is superior in paper sensation. Even if I like my iPad Pro 10.5 with note taking apps such as Notability or Goodnotes ... Etc.. I prefer using the rM at work ... It is more discrete during meetings for example.
    Thank you for this good intro to reMarkable tablet

      It has since gotten a number of software updates now, and it will continue to do so. Plus on the rM website, the price for the rM 1 bundle (device, marker and folio) is actually a ton more reasonable now at $299. Bump that down further to around $199-249 and honestly digital notetakers can easily flock to this over a regular tablet.

    I really like the idea to create handwritten notes instead of typing my notes on a keyboard for learning stuff. So like the idea of this device. And to be honest, some time ago a device was already in my shopping basket. The only I stepped away from buying was the one color note taking. I really think handwritten notes have to contain colored notes and the highlighter stuff.
    One idea for the iPad vs remarkable discussion: if you are afraid of getting lost in the World Wide Web on a iPad, than don’t install every app you like and use the good old flight modus, hide entertainment apps in some weird folder structure and you should good to go.

    • @longuyen10119

      Agree. Such a first world problem. Have an iPad worth $500 that literally can do the same thing and a lot more but complains about distraction, and goes out to but another $500 device just for you to “take casual notes“. I’ve taken notes with my iPad for the past 3 years at uni and been extremely happy. You’re making up reasons to justify your questionable purchase which I’m not going to judge, but those reasons seem unrelatable.

  • @carprincess
    @carprincess 4 роки тому +5

    I actually own a reMarkable and purchased it when it was on Kickstarter. The Kickstarter price was a bit cheaper and I justified buying it at the time since it was cheaper than an iPad. However, ever since I purchased my iPad, my reMarkable has been sitting on my bookshelf.
    The reMarkable is a great product. Before my iPad, I was overjoyed to use it, and the novelty of when I took it out during meetings was also pretty neat. It's a head-turner for sure and people immediately are drawn to it. It also forces you to stay offline which is another added perk in this tech-driven 24/7 online world. I loved that the reMarkable never gave me the option to get distracted, yet it still was able to do the useful online functionality such as viewing my notes on my desktop and transferring PDFs to my reMarkable.
    For the price, I'd definitely go for an iPad. It just requires a lot more willpower to be productive since the iPad has a lot of "shiny things" to distract the user.
    However if the reMarkable was able to somehow make the tip of the 'eraser' actually work as an eraser, that'd be a game-changer in my opinion. Apple still hasn't been able to give the erasing experience for iPads, so if reMarkable could provide that, I'm sure that'd give it some kudos.

    I bought my Remarkable Tablet in the third batch of it's first release so I've had it a while, though I don't use it as much as I wanted the device for, I'll explain why. Also why I won't be buying the next generation 2 version.
    When I first saw this I thought someone has done their homework, and though having to buy very pricey replacement nibs was a major Let down, it was a small price to pay if they got the device right, they didn't!
    When it arrived the first thing I noticed was the buttons (3 of them) at the bottom, these should have been added to the side of the device as anyone who tries writing or drawing on this will tell you, at one stage you will keep hitting them wether you want to or not, and after many updates to fix various problems my old remarkable still has this happening.
    I was going to use this as a writing / drawing tool, but because of this, that never happened, also if you try writing on it without a table, after a while it is very difficult to hold on you lap, and while on a table you keep hitting the buttons?
    I did upgrade to a Samsung pen though and that fixed the nib problem as you tend to go through these quickly.
    Now, you'd think I was nit picking, but think of what you want this device for, and for me a reporters note pad and eraser pen costing $15 worked far better than this?
    It also didn't cost a fortune either?
    As this is not the first device like this I've owned having owned quite a few, example ASUS eee Note, Surface Pro 4, various Apple Newtons and also the boogie board blue tooth version, I thought after all who have come before it you'd think they would have learned something, but I guess not.
    Still, at least they got the e-ink screen right, I'll give them that.

    • @qwertyboguss
      @qwertyboguss 4 роки тому +2

      Thanks for sharing your experience. The remarkable 2 does not have buttons though and that seems to be your main issue with the tablet.
      I've pre-ordered the RM2 and I'd like to think I did my research but the button issue I wasn't aware of yet.
      There are alternative styli that you can get that write on the RM too, however they will reduce the paper like writing feel and your pressure/tilt options. If you care mostly about the sort of expensive nibs and less about the experience, then you can also get an alternative stylus.
      That being said, if the writing feel experience isn't your main concern then other e-ink devices may fit your needs better.

    I just skimmed the video so I may have missed it, but one of the critical points is that it’s not backlit. Screens are terrible for our eyes and this product (the new one coming out anyway) solves that problem.
    I’m interest in one for that reason, but watching this review reminded me that owning digital devices is always somewhat unnecessary, and that paper does the trick anyway for a $2 notebook.
    I’d be interested in trying one of the new ones out though, just to see what it’s like.

    I've been watching the Remarkable for about 2 years, and with the upcoming release of the Remarkable 2, I decided to jump on the reduced price of the remarkable. ($499 Canadian down from, like, $750 CDN) I would NEVER pay $750 for this device. I think the sweetspot price for this device is 399... however, I decided to pay the extra hundred dollars. I have 30 days to use it before I return it.
    My main reason for buying it is because at work, I burn through notebooks, and then have to leaf through pages of notes to find what I need. Now I don't need to. I can carry this notebook forever while keeping notes and sketches organized.
    One of the things I instantly don't understand is the lack of ability to delete the Quicksheet. I can remove pages inside the quicksheet... but I don't understand this inability to remove the first Quicksheet.
    Other than that, it seems pretty interesting. Basic, but that's what a notepad should be. Basic. Note taking. Non-distracting.

      Try Evernote Pro... you can take a picture of your paper notes with your phone camera (or scan them) via the Evernote app and save to Evernote. It then creates an OCR of the doc so you can search your handwritten notes just like a Word doc.

With iPads, even if I turn off notifications for certain apps, the fact that they're there can still be distracting. What people tend to miss is this is a no distractions form of writing. Yeah ipads are amazing and the pens are responsive BUT it doesn't feel like paper and the ability to get distracted with all the other ipad capabilities is much higher. Dedicating specific tools for their one or 2 or even 3 intended uses can be way more productive

    Liked the review, but you missed two things: Because of the e-ink display, this is much easier on the eyes than a tablet, and the battery lasts way longer. The PDF annotation thing is a huge deal for people who's research involves reading lots of academic papers. How do the annotations get synced back to the cloud? This is something that works really well on both Android tablets and iPads: you open the PDF from Dropbox, and the annotations automatically get saved back to Dropbox. Is the same thing possible with this?

    I am a writer and the deeper I dig into this, the better it sounds. Yes, the price is steep, but it seems to deliver more. I’m in the process of writing a book. You can imagine the rewrites, notations, revisions, etc., my home looks like a pack rat nest with paper all over. Big question: having current handwritten notes on paper, could I scan this over to the tablet and...could it turn it into neat text? That would be almost #1 sales point. Second, I’m into criminal psychology. Often books or articles are of interest or, author wishes me to edit a paper scrap. Again, scan handwritten/convert? Your video is great as it is not all company hype and cheery bits. Hope you are getting paid in parts!

    I have been a fan of the remarkable tablet and have owned one since April 2019. I initially found the software to be a bit laggy. I purchased it for work as I attend a lot of meetings and prefer to hand write than type. It's more acceptable rather than having a laptop and typing away during meetings. The problem with notebooks is that it gets thrown out. Whereas, electronic notes can be downloaded, sorted and kept for a long period. It does get some time getting used to. If there were improvements to be made, I would love to be able to have a search function. Probably not feasible via tablet but perhaps on the client software. Speaking of, there are a lot of things that can be incorporated in the software rather than the tablet itself that would make it an even better product (in my opinion). So having been a user of the 1st generation tablet, I'm yet to be convinced if its worthwhile upgrading to the new version given the price point - I doubt they offer a discount for existing users. HINT! Also, I like the fact that you don't have to change hardware (that often) in order to get new features. I have been happy with the product and have purchased templates for it which is a separate market/business in itself. Checkout etsy.

I'll also have to read many, many PDFs and this may save on paper and save my eyes. My eyesight is a bit poor, is this easy to read on? It seems to me to be like a kindle paperwhite for writing! Oh, i desperately want one.

    • @clairestjacques

      @maria watch out - not sure your handwriting will get any better with this. The video above also mentions that the conversion to text was not very successful so the tester stopped using that. If your handwriting is terrible you will just end up with cloud saved images of your terrible looking notes. On the other hand I asked the hand-to-text conversion quality question specifically of another online reviewer who is a published author and he was enthusiastic about his 2 year experience with rM.
      I personally have not tested rM but I do know that writing on glass (not rM) does not let me form my letters and words properly - too slippery and not responsive enough (I am talking about a tactile ASUS Zenbook for which I do not have a stylus, but even writing large letters with my fingertip I cannot control the shape of the letters well enough and OneNote was completely incapable of reading me, to judge from the gibberish it returned. Note I do NOT recommend that solution to anyone). As a verbatim note taker who then spends hours writing up my notes from long-day meetings into official minutes, I'm looking forward to the paper-like drag and torque of the rM2 "Canvas" surface and a decent conversion process, with few steps (as rM2 supposedly offers) and good fidelity.
      Regarding the reading of PDFs many people complain about the fact that rM has no backlight to allow reading in any environment night or day - but as the videos suggest that is the point, slow down and relax your eyes on this eInk presentation. You can definitely download and read pdfs but you apparently cannot grab text from them, and your annotations will not be transferable either except as an image of the page with your stuff laid over the top. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THE SEARCH FUNCTION WILL RETURN KEY WORDS FROM HAND ANNOTATIONS OF PDFs?

    I remember seeing the advert for these a while back. I was expecting the price to be on a par with a Kindle Paperwhite based on the functionality. I get the feeling that the target audience are people with plenty of spare cash who buy into the narrative. In reality to get this experience I can either use GoodNotes on my iPad or I can use the Rocketbook which syncs with email, Evernote and several other apps. You can buy a whole collection of coloured Frixion pens for the Rocketbook for less than the price of a Remarkable pen. But then I am not their target audience...

    • @___xyz___
      @___xyz___ 4 роки тому +1

      In reality, you can't get one experience in a different way. I'll never use a smart tablet for taking notes-what a joke-and why would you use a notebook to replace a notebook? Sure, I have plenty of savings, and I decided to splurge on the reMarkable for my studies. It's truly not a replacement. But it's miles, miles ahead of anything that even tries to do what it does. iPad is such a meme in the realm of productivity.

Most importantly, when I write notes during class, i find myself sometimes (often!) wanting to re-organize - can we cut and copy notes elsewhere? How about deleting? once several sentences have been deleted, are we left with a blank space or can we re-organize text? Thanks!

    I'm losing my vision, and can no longer deal with black on white print at the fonts that normally end up in books. Can you run this in dark mode? (White text on black screen is much better. I got a halo around text from a blood leak in my eye.) Is it easy to zoom parts of the text?
    For example... a zoomed cursor that's easy to move around. (with pencil? eraser end?)
