I'm going to go with #8 the 2015 1987X. Awesome! Such a sweet & organic tone with just the right amount of grit. It has the sound that I shoot for with my Vintage Modern 2466. I get close, but not quite the same!
Loved all the Marshalls! Thanks so much. Even loved your Zagray which was quite bold to add on your part. Love makes a man do daring things!. My favorite, though was #19, the '69 Marshall Major. I just loved the amazing clean tone with just a hint of breakup. Getting those Beck-like tones, and one just knows that when that amp gets angry the depth of tonal fury has no words in any dictionary to describe the destruction that will ensue. Thank you so much Johan for your commitment and passion!
I really liked how you played different ideas based on the tonal qualities of each head... I liked: #1, #2, #12, #13 and #14. Great job... Thank you so much
67' model 1987 all the way !!! I love the Zagray too ! 77 and 80 JMP are fantastic too but I can't decide between them with those wicked riffs ! Great demo Johan ! Thanks so much.
Marshall Heaven !! This is awesome, some of the newer marshalls, well they surprised me with their very good tones. The creme de la creme (IMO) was that 1968 50W lead (1987). Man that is bad !!!! Tack Johan !! Thank you thank you people, thank you thank you, I'm glad you liked the show........
Johan love your channel! --- Loved the 2015 1987x ---- perfect generation bridge tone between plexi and JCM --- 2nd favorite is the rebuild --- sounds amazing, totally agree with you.
Your right on with the sound and what your hearing right before!! When i was trying to get my TMB clone voiced i listened to the Jcm 800 Combo you have!! I love that amp!!
Hello Johan! Sorry, but I lost track of which one I liked the best, but there certainly was one or two that had the sound I like best! Very cool video, thanks for taking the time to show these! Peace. Don.
Number 14 has a great tone - very Billy Gibbons. Have to admit, some of the newer ones sounded very good as well. JVM410H fits in that mix nicely. #19 sounds beautiful, but not sure how much came from post production. Great demo, as always!
Awesome collection! I love the vintage Marshalls! I also liked some of the newer ones though. I find Marshalls are beautiful sounding when they have some dirt and yet a bluesy clean string definition shining through. So many amps can't do that like a Marshall can.
Johan Segeborn Have you played any Zeppelin in your videos yet? If not, please play some through a nice '69 or '71 superlead or something you like for that Page sound, thanks.
A hard choice due to the amazing sounds these amps deliver, but the 1967 "beast" was probably most appealing to my ears aswell. Really liked the 1977 Super Bass also. Keep up the good work Johan! :)
You're too kind, Johan. It is you who send us those beautiful tones. Very inspiring really. As we chat I am looking at second hand Marshall heads that I could manage with a good attenuator (essentially the 1987x that I like also very much)... Cheers!
The amp that sees to most use here is a '77 JMP 2204. I combine the master volume with light attenuation with very good results at bedroom volume level.
14 is just different than all the others in a really good way, very gnarly sounding. Surprisingly I like number 1 a lot too for being a recent reissue Marshall.
I sometimes don't wanna watch your comparisons if I'm deciding to buy a new amp/guitar. You seriously make everything sound absolutely AMAZING and it would be so hard for me to choose.
They are all capable of great tone. I do think that the jvm has alot of versatility from sparkly cleans to plexi breakup and beyond!! you are the marshall man!
Wow what a great video!!! I'd be like a kid in a candy store trying to figure out which one I'd want lol!!! Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts with us, it's a great video!!!
Hey Johan! I just watched this again today and I think my favorite was #4. How I wish I lived near you man,I can talk about these amps until I'm blue in the face, but on top of that,it would be a blessing to have a friend that just enjoys all of this crap! I don't have anyone in my life like you,and I wish I did. Take care my friend. Don.
+Johan Segeborn I live in Clevgeland,Ohio. Here's my email so we can talk away from here.donwingle@gmail.com.I tried your email last night and it wouldn't go through..
my favorites are the Marshall JCM800..JCM900..Marshall MG 100 FX ..Marshall MG 100hdfx..and none of these are any better than the other I have all 4 of them love them all all are fantastic
Hey Johan, thanks for taking the time to do all the vids.Would you mind giving me your personal taste/opinion on power and preamp valves (replacement) for a JTM45 and a 1974x (both RI)?
+PeteLayburn Thanks Pete, I have had great results with many contemporary tubes like Electro-Harmonix, Tung Sol, and JJ for instance. If you can get your hands on some NOS Mullards they are even better of course. But the tubes is only one of many components in the sound chain. Cheers Johan
thanks Johan Segeborn i did like the Marshall major and also no19. Which i don't recolect the amp but loved your playing style. Fantastic guitar work as always. 💯✔
I love each one of them. All have great thick juicy sounds and mixing different amps in the same mix would work very well to get natural separation to ensure the mix was heavy and full without crowding. Good stuff :)
Thank you for a great video. I like all the amps, however, no. 20, the 1967 JMP50W i my favorite. I play a 1968 JMP 50 'Big M', maybe that is why :-). Already looking forwards to the next video .
Fantastic video. I’m a marshall noob. Thanks to u I’m a pro. Seriously wish u only the best. What a range Marshall has. I would have never known the difference. Wow. Just wow.
All these amazing Marshalls, and somehow that Zagray is the most mind blowing! Super Bass always a great choice, nice to see #1, new marshall, still sounds like marshall.
The 1987Xs were my favorites in this vid, but the Super Basses are my favorites that you've played on this channel. The Beast rebuild was also awesome.
Great video. l have a 1981 2204 JMP combo similar to No 5 which sounds immense. Obviously in a short clip you don't hear the dynamics of playing the strings hard or soft. Funnily enough to me No 5 sounded a bit too bright. Loved the 1987x Thanks for posting.
Tough call but if I had to choose one it would be #14. It has the grind of the other non-MV heads but with a bit more articulation and clarity, very nice indeed. BTW, what song was that in #3? Sounds familiar but I can't place it.
Let's not forget how important tube selection is. A tube with high inter-electrode capacitance may be quite lacking in highs and can be quite "smeary." One note smears into the other, never yielding string to string or note to note separation. Articulation, clarity and touch response also depend greatly upon the tubes.
This is an excellent demo. Very well recorded. I thought the newer amps held up quite nicely, but the 800 was my favorite of this bunch. Didn't care for the Pig. Personally I like JTM45s and the 18-watt 1974s the most of all I've played.
Johann I love your comparison videos! They really put a lot of myths to rest. Could you compare the Marshall YJM100 to a vintage plexi? I have a YJM and IMHO it could be the best Marshall-manufactured Marshall for the money out there due to it's incredible flexibility (auto bias any combination of octal valves), the excellent attentuator, the 50 watt switch (cuts off two outer tubes, and terrific reverb, boost & noise gate. Just a straight-forward 'out-of-the-box' comparison to one or more vintage JMPs would be really cool!
does anyone know the lick he was playing for amp 2 (1967 marshall 100w rebuild part 1)? That's probably my favourite tone of the video too, sounds amazing
Only "true" marshall I've played through is a JCM 900 (4100 I believe, it's from the 90s) through the matching 4x12. I threw a tube screamer in front of it, and it sounds like someone put a slayer record on. beautiful tone.
Try make a various the 1st transition model Marshall if possible. Mine was a 1973 1959 S/L with pcb and chasis number 001. No Marshall logo printed on the pcb. Still not many gain like the old plexi to me. Love it.
Wonderful demo of these fine amps. Could you tell me how the amps vol/tone controls are generally set during your demos ? Is there a standard setting for all the heads, or do you tweak each individual one ? My favorite was the "Beast" !!
+Mike Dennis Thanks Mike! Usually max mid and I have almost zero bass, volume on 8 or higher if it doesnt get muddy. Treble and prescence as high as possible without harshness. Cheers Johan
What do you think of JVM 210 or the whole line? I liked all the amps you demonstrated. The 1987x sounds pretty good. I've been waiting on the Zagray to come back around! I love those tones!!!
I think you summed it perfectly they're all great in their own way. I think this video shows that the g15m is a great speaker, and sadly not so common in use or existence. I particularly love the 76 superlead, if I remember correctly you ended up buying that one or one similar? Really clear, even breakup.
You could fry an egg with the #2 1967 Marshall 100W Beast! I wouldn't advise touching anything metal while plugged in to that thing, it doesn't sound like its grounded right. It sounds so dirty! #3 the 2014 Marshall JVM4101H sounds so sweet especially after just listening to the beast. Nice modern balanced tone. And then there is #7 the 1984 Marshall JCM800 it's so mid-bass heavy - if you want to crush eggs, ear drums & skulls then the JCM800 is the weapon of choice!
The Zagray! would probably inspire me the most to play because of its unique tone. It's almost like a fuzz. Sounds crazy...just like me. But OUCH! That price tag is just way too hardcore.
What microphone is that silvery one you keep using? Great video, loved all the amps, actually. I'm using a Laney VH100R + Engl 4x12, but I'm really starting to think I should get a Marshall. I want to sound more like Gary Moore.
the 2015 1987x sounds fantastic, great to see Marshall can still do it :) I have an '83 4010 which is an incredible sounding amp, i love it
Thanks! Yeah that 4010 always finds use in any mix. Cheers!
Those 60's heads just have a unique sounds unlike all the others!
+Jeff Howerton yeah, they are warm even when treble and prescence are maxed
I'm going to go with #8 the 2015 1987X. Awesome! Such a sweet & organic tone with just the right amount of grit. It has the sound that I shoot for with my Vintage Modern 2466. I get close, but not quite the same!
Thanks Tony! The VM is another favourite of mine on the vintage channel, but with a bit rounder tone. Cheers Johan
That riff at 2:50 just sounds too cool! I love how it sounds wrong and right at the same time
Nice comparison. I would have threw in the jubilee 2550 head from the 80s though. Love the jcm 800 too, great sounding amp.
+Anthony Nickolas Thanks Anthony!
Great selection, thanks for your effort as always.
Thanks!
no prob I also really like the 7th I forgot to mention
Liked them all but loved the H/W 1959 the most. Number 11.
+John Spina Thanks! Glad to hear it.
Super crunchy tone
I own this amp, and it quite literally changed my life. Loudest 100W head I’ve ever played, however... :)
4, 12 and 14 for me, Johan.
My favourite channel on youtube! Every video is superb. Love it!
Thanks! Really glad to hear that :-) Cheers!
1987x 2015 will always be my favourite, although a reissue, it is legendary
Loved all the Marshalls! Thanks so much. Even loved your Zagray which was quite bold to add on your part. Love makes a man do daring things!. My favorite, though was #19, the '69 Marshall Major. I just loved the amazing clean tone with just a hint of breakup. Getting those Beck-like tones, and one just knows that when that amp gets angry the depth of tonal fury has no words in any dictionary to describe the destruction that will ensue. Thank you so much Johan for your commitment and passion!
+Carey Brazil Thanks Carey! That's very well put. :-) Cheers Johan
I really liked how you played different ideas based on the tonal qualities of each head...
I liked:
#1, #2, #12, #13 and #14.
Great job...
Thank you so much
+Justin Andrews Thanks Justin! Great to hear it!
Those cabinets were off the chart too. Great stuff!
+meclazine Thanks! :-)
This has become one of my favorite channels. Love these clips.
I just don't know how people can not like this or any of his video's? Johan your video's are awesome, love it man!
67' model 1987 all the way !!! I love the Zagray too ! 77 and 80 JMP are fantastic too but I can't decide between them with those wicked riffs ! Great demo Johan ! Thanks so much.
+Mitchell Ferre Thanks Mitchell, so glad to hear it! Cheers
+Stephen Flynn Thanks Stephen, that's great to hear! Cheers Johan
2 and 14 really stood out for me. #2 instantly made me think of Ace Frehley's Shock Me/love gun album tone.
Your right on with the sound and what your hearing right before!! When i was trying to get my TMB clone voiced i listened to the Jcm 800 Combo you have!! I love that amp!!
+Tim Stanley Thanks, glad you like that one, it's one of my favorites too
Hello Johan! Sorry, but I lost track of which one I liked the best, but there certainly was one or two that had the sound I like best! Very cool video, thanks for taking the time to show these! Peace. Don.
+NoyzyBoyZ3 Thanks Don!
+Jerry Robitaille Thanks Jerry! Yeah there's no substitute for a Marshall! Cheers
Johan Segeborn Have you played any Zeppelin in your videos yet? If not, please play some through a nice '69 or '71 superlead or something you like for that Page sound, thanks.
...this is the reason why I like this channel...it brightens my day...just loved the JCM 800...but did enjoy all the rest nonetheless...
+Poloniothx Thanks! Really glad you like the channel. Have a nice weekend! Johan
Thank you for putting all this Info together man, really appreciate all the time and effort - Very cool
A hard choice due to the amazing sounds these amps deliver, but the 1967 "beast" was probably most appealing to my ears aswell. Really liked the 1977 Super Bass also. Keep up the good work Johan! :)
+Gustaf Lundberg Thanks Gustaf, glad to hear it. Cheers Johan
The first 15 are ALL absolutely incredible!
For me the 1969 Marshall Major has this incredible sticky-smooth saturation that drives me nuts! Thanx for this :)
Thanks! I actually had the opportunity to buy that amp but I missed it. I'm still kicking myself about that! Cheers Johan
Well, I feel you! This tone is perfect. It's like a blanket of pure electricity. It must be mad to hear it in person!
That's a beautiful analogy!
Still love the JMP's, they seem to open up more if not with some extra lower mids. All great amps all the same so thanks!
Thanks Jj!
14 is just different than all the others in a really good way, very gnarly sounding. Surprisingly I like number 1 a lot too for being a recent reissue Marshall.
Thanks Tyler, Glad you like 14 since it was built by Pleximaster for a favourite player of mine
The music you played on 19 was exceptionally tasty and slick. Inspired and inspiring. Thank you again for doing what you do. :)
great review Johan. always loved the 2204 JMP. had a couple over the years. There are several others that made me go Wow!
+Rj Bron Thanks :-)
I sometimes don't wanna watch your comparisons if I'm deciding to buy a new amp/guitar. You seriously make everything sound absolutely AMAZING and it would be so hard for me to choose.
You make my day my friend!
Incredible collection indeed. Top 3 in my ears: The Super Basses, vintage 1987s, and Marshall Major. The 2204 too is really great. Cheers! Jonas
+JonasSweden1 Thanks man, Cheers
Loved that first 1987x. Great bright and crunchy mmm
11, 13, & 14 are monsters! nice video
Thanks! Glad you like it
Johan the man! Only 20? Awesome tones and playing yet again.
They are all capable of great tone. I do think that the jvm has alot of versatility from sparkly cleans to plexi breakup and beyond!! you are the marshall man!
Thanks! :-D A very nice compliment.
Wow what a great video!!! I'd be like a kid in a candy store trying to figure out which one I'd want lol!!! Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts with us, it's a great video!!!
+Joseph Wilber Thanks Joseph! Glad you liked it.
Don.
+NoyzyBoyZ3 Number #4 is one of the setups I use the most, 1x12 Greenback G12H 55Hz. It fits so nicely in most mixes! Where are you from, Don?
+Johan Segeborn I live in Clevgeland,Ohio. Here's my email so we can talk away from here.donwingle@gmail.com.I tried your email last night and it wouldn't go through..
+NoyzyBoyZ3 I'll try to send you a mail instead!
Loved the 77 super bass, the 800, every 1987, the hw plexi and the beast #002.
Very tough to choose just 1, but my ears lean towards the 1987x. Amazing how it hangs in the company of its vintage ancestors.
+DavidVeeGuitars Yeah it's really a worthy reissue
Awesome!!! Only thing I'd personally add is the Silver Jubilee or the controversal AFD100...
Thank you Johan!!! :D
+dzemohendrix Thanks! I havent played the AFD yet but I've heard some great demos
Johan Segeborn I had the chance of playing one in Turkey, in Istanbul. Oh good Lord the tone...
Cheers! :)
#3 and #11 are my favorite. Very bright and punchy.
my favorites are the Marshall JCM800..JCM900..Marshall MG 100 FX ..Marshall MG 100hdfx..and none of these are any better than the other I have all 4 of them love them all all are fantastic
One of my fav demo's of yours! Thanks for the helpful reveal of all the big heads....I pick the HW, the Beast, and the JMP Super Bass~Thanks John!
Hey man, what a choice! The '800 sounds pure evil but the Zagray is immense and that would be my go to amp.
Thanks! Yeah the Zagray is everything one wants it to be :-) just a piece of engineering marvel. Cheers Johan
Ahhh...at the 2:00 mark a large grin came across my face. Some beauties there!
+Johan Segeborn Thanks Johan.
Funny you mention Mullards as I ordered TAD's "version" of those legendary tubes (EL84).
We'll see...
Cheers.
JCM800 hot rod w/ added gain stage is THE marshall sound of the 80's/90's records. Forget the stock amps Johan.
hi Johan thanks for all the videos.
JCM800 2210 !!!!
Thanks! Yeah it's the most evil sounding of the lot
thanks Johan Segeborn
i did like the Marshall major and also no19.
Which i don't recolect the amp but loved your playing style.
Fantastic guitar work as always. 💯✔
+STEVE SHAW Great to hear that! Cheers
As usuall Great review well done from a expert! Thanks Jorge
Thanks my friend! Glad to hear it.
Which original video Johan plays the 1959hw (number 11)? Best amp ever
Hi! It’s this one
ua-cam.com/video/e3EygoDFwN0/v-deo.html
Cheers
Hi Johan, 19 with that bluesy tone sounds terrific! 👍
Thanks my friend! :-)
I love each one of them. All have great thick juicy sounds and mixing different amps in the same mix would work very well to get natural separation to ensure the mix was heavy and full without crowding. Good stuff :)
+Jon Gill Thanks Jon!
Thank you for a great video. I like all the amps, however, no. 20, the 1967 JMP50W i my favorite. I play a 1968 JMP 50 'Big M', maybe that is why :-). Already looking forwards to the next video .
+Thomas Kjærgaard Thanks Thonas! Big M is so cool!! Cheers Johan
Fantastic video. I’m a marshall noob. Thanks to u I’m a pro. Seriously wish u only the best. What a range Marshall has. I would have never known the difference. Wow.
Just wow.
Great video and i like them all marshall's, but my favorite is my SL2555 Jubilee.
Thanks! Thats a great amp
They all sound a bit different from each other. Not sure I have a favorite. I’d be happy with any of them. Great video.
the swede from hell on wheels!!!!
great demos man, #4 #6 #12 #15 - if it was pushed to the limit, nugent all over...#19 major was delish !
+Jake Langham Thanks Jake! :-)
Man, that Marshall Major is like a fine wine....
+Nick DeMayo it is indeed :-)
That 1969 major sounded amazing.
All these amazing Marshalls, and somehow that Zagray is the most mind blowing! Super Bass always a great choice, nice to see #1, new marshall, still sounds like marshall.
Thanks yeah Marshall has still got it. And the Zagray is an engineering marvel, it can sound like virtually anything. Cheers
All of your riffs are so good and catchy ! :)
Great video mate. Amp 2 for me, cut through any mix.
Thanks! My favourite too
The 1987Xs were my favorites in this vid, but the Super Basses are my favorites that you've played on this channel. The Beast rebuild was also awesome.
Thanks! Yeah it's cool that 1987X can compete which those old plexis
+David Edwards Thanks David! Yeah I'm going for a super bright seventies tone :-) and yeah Marshall has done a great job on the 1987x. Cheers Johan
Hi Johan, great channel, nice tasty riffs, top stuff...one question: the original video for No 9 please, I like the riff very much!
Tough call but if I had to choose one it would be #14. It has the grind of the other non-MV heads but with a bit more articulation and clarity, very nice indeed. BTW, what song was that in #3? Sounds familiar but I can't place it.
+soundsalive Thanks! That's one of mine.
For me, the Major, 60ies Super Bass and 1987 were the best. Surprisingly, the new JVM410H held its own despite the tough competition.
Let's not forget how important tube selection is. A tube with high inter-electrode capacitance may be quite lacking in highs and can be quite "smeary." One note smears into the other, never yielding string to string or note to note separation. Articulation, clarity and touch response also depend greatly upon the tubes.
#17 and #18 sound like a beast to me! :O
I love your marshall amp videos btw. Keep making these videos pls :)
you rock dude!!!! especially on the 2015 1987X 🤘🤘🤘
+Dejan Ilić Thanks Dejan! Glad you liked it. Cheers
This is an excellent demo. Very well recorded. I thought the newer amps held up quite nicely, but the 800 was my favorite of this bunch. Didn't care for the Pig. Personally I like JTM45s and the 18-watt 1974s the most of all I've played.
+MyMotherTheCar Thanks! Glad you liked it :-)
4,5,8,19 my favourites but you are right they are all pretty damn cool.....well done johan most enjoyable 👍🏻👏🏽
Thanks! Very interesting to hear. Cheers
Number 8, on the 2015 Marshall 1987X you got very close to Iron Maidens 2 Minutes To Midnight tone!!
+Wojtek Cymerys Thanks! I love Maiden. Cheers Johan
I have a Marshall VBA400, and I love it! It's a 400 watt al tube bass head
+BarryWorst cool, do you use it for bass or guitar?
I use it for bass. I play in a rock cover band
I keep coming back to the super lead, it seems. Whenever it's in the mix in one of your vids it seems to be the one that screams 'buy me'.
+GhostOfAE Yeah the Super Lead is the quintessential Marshall tone in many ways
Johann I love your comparison videos! They really put a lot of myths to rest.
Could you compare the Marshall YJM100 to a vintage plexi?
I have a YJM and IMHO it could be the best Marshall-manufactured Marshall for the money out there due to it's incredible flexibility (auto bias any combination of octal valves), the excellent attentuator, the 50 watt switch (cuts off two outer tubes, and terrific reverb, boost & noise gate.
Just a straight-forward 'out-of-the-box' comparison to one or more vintage JMPs would be really cool!
+kickinvideo333 Thanks, it actually holds up really well to any plexi. I'll demo it first chance I get!
does anyone know the lick he was playing for amp 2 (1967 marshall 100w rebuild part 1)? That's probably my favourite tone of the video too, sounds amazing
Only "true" marshall I've played through is a JCM 900 (4100 I believe, it's from the 90s) through the matching 4x12. I threw a tube screamer in front of it, and it sounds like someone put a slayer record on. beautiful tone.
The 900s are great amps. Cheers Johan
The newer amps sounded good and that Zagory was damn good.
+Heavy Psych Thanks!
#19 is my favourite but they all sound great.
+Tilen Marš Thanks Tilen! Glad to hear it. :-)
These riffs need a singerrrr! Just awesome riffing here.
Try make a various the 1st transition model Marshall if possible. Mine was a 1973 1959 S/L with pcb and chasis number 001. No Marshall logo printed on the pcb. Still not many gain like the old plexi to me. Love it.
1 17 20 the Zag had the beefiest output tube grunge ive ever heard!
+Kelly Jackson Thanks! Yeah the Zagray is an amazing amp
Awesome Thanks !
What do you think of JVM 210 or the whole line? I liked all the amps you demonstrated. The 1987x sounds pretty good. I've been waiting on the Zagray to come back around! I love those tones!!!
+Mark B Thanks Mark, I really like the whole JVM line. They all capture the classic Plexi tone. Cheers Johan
You have an awesome collection of great old Marshalls. Any Hiwatt amps in there?
+tim price thanks man, no Hiwatts yet unfortunately
Hiwatts are waaaaaaaay expensive
I think you summed it perfectly they're all great in their own way. I think this video shows that the g15m is a great speaker, and sadly not so common in use or existence. I particularly love the 76 superlead, if I remember correctly you ended up buying that one or one similar? Really clear, even breakup.
+PoJoWo Thanks! Yeah I got that unit :-)
Great video man. Keep it up.
Thanks Corbin!
+MP Gaffer Thanks :-) Yeah the Beast is scary
I liked the 1987 50 watt heads, they just had a nice gutsy sound. Coupled with the greenbacks this may be the amp for me.
+Antony Robson Yeah, the 50W feels a bit more versatile than 100W to me
Was kind of hoping the JTM50 Black Flag would be in there too. So many great sounds on the list but my fave is the 1959 The Beast 100W rebuild
The Zagray! would probably inspire me the most to play because of its unique tone. It's almost like a fuzz. Sounds crazy...just like me.
But OUCH! That price tag is just way too hardcore.
Still love that Super Lead Plexi best!! 😁
Thanks for posting this. Very cool! Cheers!
2:21 no master volume ?
That JMP 2104... that’s the tone I’m seeking
2:14 wow almost the exact tone of Atomic Playboys. That amp sounds killer 😲
What microphone is that silvery one you keep using?
Great video, loved all the amps, actually. I'm using a Laney VH100R + Engl 4x12, but I'm really starting to think I should get a Marshall. I want to sound more like Gary Moore.
