Something that always stuck out to me in that first footage, is how Mario seems to be kind of a copy/paste from Mario 64, but in a 2D plain, because of the way he moves and the fact that he has the backflip. Kind of what Ubisoft did with the first Raving Rabbids on DS, where it seems like they took the engine from Rayman 2 DS and used it to make a 2D game.
Well, actually this game was built using a modified version of the Super Mario 64 DS engine. I'm suprised that it wasn't mentioned in this video actually, as it explains a lot of the scrapped and unused objects, especially the 3D models.

@Flashback Guy I mean going off of what's been released it was planned as a new game, or at least was never publicly announced as a remake. The article my first comment referred to listed the title as New Super Mario Bros even as an upcoming GBA release. Besides, SMB already had a GBA port, the fact that they started with 2 sort of implies that they weren't interested with retreading that game for a second time on the same platform
I guess the reason most of the 64 references like kicks, enemys, blocks and buttons, wheren't used was maybe to give a more classic mario experience: Since probably having Mario 64's gags would had make it feel like, well, a 2D Mario 64 (DS). 27:42. Or it could be used for the casino mini game that is used in the final release, in the final release only Luigi appears in that mini game wearing a black and white tux. And that ‘unused power’ up for Mario coincidentally has the same colour as Luigi’s tux outfit. So perhaps originally Mario could appear in the casino mini game as well?
36:55 That's probably why this world has so many cannons, two towers (factories? I recall there were a lot of smashy spike pillars, which could have been presses), and a tank boss.
This game was a big part of my late elementary school years, I never had a Gameboy but when the DS came out everyone had one. Big multiplayer sessions of Animal Crossing WW, Mario Kart DS, and this on the bus with my friends
We seriously need to contact Chris and see if he could tell us more about the beta footage he saw! Just imagine if he managed to record the whole thing.
The spike balls having rock names for their sounds is probably just the name of the sound effect used. Lots of effects like that come from sound libraries and are often used creatively.

I remember seeing screenshots of the beta version of this game in a Beano magazine circa 2005/ 2006, and thinking they were just secret levels and modes.
@Mike will Yes you do!!!
The unused color pallete of Mario’s outfit could have actually been used as a Superball powerup
Beta64 I just wanted you to know that you make some of the best content out there that is extremely interesting and funny but its also great education on history of games i really miss you and wish you would come back. I know times are tough and this channel may be tough for you to keep going but i really encourage you if your ready this thanks for your time 😊
Super Mario 64 DS and New Super Mario Bros. were my childhood. It’s all I played for hours upon hours.
Finally, some delicious content
Cronchy
Salty
Thanks for the new upload, really was looking forward to it :D
6:50 Alright alright that salt bit got me. It got me good. 🖤🤣
"We don't have a house, but we do have this Luigi"
Been waiting for this video for about 4 years now, couldn't have clicked faster if I tried
“a whole year of no new info” *laughs in zelda fan*
*Laughs in Metroid*
*Laughs in Chibi Robo*
*laughs in Sonic*
*laughs in F-Zero*
*Laughs in Pikmin*
6:59 this man actually sprinkled salt on the paper, what a Chad🤣
What?
That's a considerably early use of "Chad", before it became mainstream
36:55 That's probably why this world has so many cannons, two towers (factories? I recall there were a lot of smashy spike pillars, which could have been presses), and a tank boss.
Honestly, this is the nostalgic and best Mario game I ever played. So it's interesting to see the behind of scenes of this legendary game.
I just got this game from GameStop and it was totally defective, and then this comes out.
*is it a sign-*
@Win_tosh 404 it's probably not their fault
“You heard that, a whole year of no new info.”
Sounds like BOTW 2
Make that 2 lol
Sonic fans... try 5 years
Got recommended this exactly 1 year after its release, anyone else?
Not possible, it's just a trend everyone does get replies, not to be rude or anythi- wait did I just... aAAAAH sh!t fine you win but still
This game was a big part of my late elementary school years, I never had a Gameboy but when the DS came out everyone had one. Big multiplayer sessions of Animal Crossing WW, Mario Kart DS, and this on the bus with my friends
the punch, kick and scrapped multiplayer is so cool
I saw this in my notifications and freaked out.
And then I heard you say "Don't freak out"
...
Edit: I want a Gamer Bible now
the planet world selection is actually so cute
Playable Bowser would have been sooooo cool arrgggggg really hope we get a beta rom leaked someday
I hope we get a bowser game sometime in the future
We seriously need to contact Chris and see if he could tell us more about the beta footage he saw! Just imagine if he managed to record the whole thing.
1:58 I completely agree it made up my early childhood and I wish I could still play it
Fun fact: When you complete a level as small Mario and takes off his hat, his head grows as long his hat is off
"his followers were confused 'what is metacritic?'" lmao
Alright, time to drop everything to watch this...
I can't give up on watching high quality content!
I love the amount of stuff that is still in the games files that is a rare sight
The spike balls having rock names for their sounds is probably just the name of the sound effect used. Lots of effects like that come from sound libraries and are often used creatively.
