I animated and scripted that intro animation! One of my favorite projects ever.

I remember as a kid watching that intro, and I was blown away! I used to open and close Encarta over and over to watch it again and again. Luckily a UA-cam search brought it back to life for me!

Alex R thank you so much for your comment, so great to hear. We made that 22 years ago. I worked with a designer, Sue L., who made the screen and the frames for the little animations, and a sound designer, Stan L., who made the soundtrack. I worked in Macromedia Director to script and choreograph the whole thing, with animation events triggered by cues I added to the sound file.
Of course today nobody would tolerate waiting for a 30 second intro animation to run before they could use some software!

@@marco9962 Oh god! That's awesome! I remember having an Encarta ('98 version) and I liked the intro and listening to it every time. But probably you didn't work on that.

@@marco9962 to be honest, the reason why so many people are here is that it was not just about a software. The 30 seconds were part of a whole experience, and it worked so well because they perfectly introduced to the spirit of that work or, at least, what children of my age could grasp it to be. Wonderful work, it expresses so well the fascinating nature of our world.
PS: and, by the way, works like thi would be so needed today, triggering the need to know more, to understand and meet this richness that a real encyclopedia aims at showing.

Encarta was a great product back in the day. Even when we got Internet it had a lot of advantages: Reliable information, tons of multimedia that took a second to load (unlike whole minutes on the Internet), and very handy tools for homeworks/learning
