    The instant translate thing has worked really well for me as long as it's a Latin or Cyrillic alphabet. I feel like the Japanese is stylized to look cute so that's why it's bugging out.

    • @TheBaldr
      @TheBaldr 3 роки тому +59

      The AI just needs better recognition of lines, otherwise Japanese is still pretty strict on how words should be formed. It shouldn't be that hard for a image-based translation no matter how stylized the Kanji/hiragana.

      That stylized first word could be a toss up for kurukuru or kurokuro. However since it a epizeuxis, spinning make much more sense than black black.

    • @Adraeth
      @Adraeth 2 роки тому +12

      It's not the stylized kanji, it's because there's a basic difference between most latin languages and japanese. Japanese language is heavily context sensitive. Often, sentences don't have a subject, because it's obvious depending on the context it's said in. Meanwhile, latin languages need a subject. There's also other grammar "oddities" for us western folks.
      And since AIs are so far incapable of picking up on context, the translation is purely based on western concepts of grammar, and then words are added to the internal databank of the AI.
      Doesn't help that one kanji alone can say one word, but paired with another one, can mean something completely different.

    Ok so all trolling aside...Takoyaki is actually really really delicious. It's like a savory doughnut ball with a tiny piece of Octopus (NOT Squid) in the middle. It's covered in a tangy mayo and sometimes some katsu-like sauce (brown, tangy sauce that is quite good). Often they dump a bit of benito (dried fish flakes) on top, and that can sometimes be a bit much for Westerners. It's pretty easy to pick off if it isn't your thing. They use a neat little pan to cook them that does resemble the tray. It takes some skill to keep rotating the balls to get them to cook evenly.
    Sorry for geeking out about it, but it's actually a Japanese street food I really like and wish you could find in the US more easily.

      I was in the Kyoto/Osaka-region with a group for a couple of months and we had a takoyaki party just before we left Japan. Seafood is kinda hit or miss for me and takoyaki has a bit of strange taste but it grew on me the more I ate it. Especially like the sauces and even the bonito flakes tasted pretty good.
      Okonomiyaki is even more my jam though, that stuff is really tasty.

    Hey! I'm a university student in Kyoto and this is exactly how Takoyaki is made in food markets!
    I've been to a few little cute food stalls that serve takoyaki and it's always a lot of fun to watch the (usually elderly) restaurant owner make the squid balls because after so many years of doing it they've perfected the art of pouring powders and mixing with tiny amounts of water. One guy near my house actually so good at what he does that he doesnt even NEED the little fluid vessel, he can eyeball the amount of water he needs and pour it in freehand.
    All in all this is a great showcase of a tasty Japanese snack and I appreciate you educating everyone on how it's made.
