For me, like most #8 was the biggest one. Besides this #5. I was actually good at math and loved it an early age naturally, but it only takes one horrible teacher, who I experienced in high school which made me stop learning it. Funny how these teachers are supposed to make us want to learn, but are often the reason we stop. Anyway I had to do math again when going back to school in college since I'm in computer science, and actually came to love it again though it started with hate for calculus LOL

Thank you for this video. Loved it! As a child I only loved three things: Reading, painting and math. My love of math changed in middle school. So for a long time I thought I was not cut out for it. But it wasn’t true. I started working in payroll 3 years ago and I was shocked how much I loved using numbers in that way. The finance aspect really interested. I got a really sweet boss who trained me. Although you don’t need to Einstein to do Payroll but math and detective work comes in very handy. I learned new skill and job!
I remember I asked a math teacher once - “what do you tell your students to inspire them to learn math well” and she said “I tell them that the effort they put forth in resolving a math problem will give them the resilience to tackle any problem they face in life”.
Thank you again for this video. It was really great!!

  • @xavierkreiss8394
    @xavierkreiss8394 4 роки тому +1

    - Maths is “Like learning a new language, and we don’t like learning a new language”: wrong. I hate maths but enjoy languages.
    - “Maths is simply a language”: no, it isn’t, it’s a system of reasoning. As Cedric Villani (mathematician, Fields medallist) pointed out, there is a language instinct: babies start to communicate naturally. But maths isn’t a natural subject. It has to be acquired, or learnt.
    - “Why should I care about X?” I agree. Why should I?
    - “Cool to hate maths”: I agree with Mr Bet-David when he says it’s stupid to say or think this. I’m bad at maths and have been since the age of 10 - I even hate the subject. But I don’t find this cool: I’m not ashamed either. It’s just the way things are.
    - “What’s the point? I’m never going to use maths in my life”: exactly! I chose a career with no maths: I’m a journalist (retired). My father was also bad, even very bad, at maths. He was a language teacher, so he never needed maths for his job. So how do I work out quantities, proportions, when I cook? How do I work out shopping bills, etc? Simple: I can do very elementary arithmetic. And I know how to use a calculator.
    - “Only nerds are good at maths”: Mr Bet-David is right again: the statement is stupid. The friends I have who love maths are certainly not nerds. By the way, one of them tried to help me understand a few “elementary” points about two years ago. After a few weeks exchanging emails and Facebook messages she gave up, saying she didn’t understand how my mind works.
    - “Horrible teachers”: they may play a part but in school when I was always “bottom of the class” in maths, other kids managed well enough, so the teachers can’t have been that bad.
    - “Everything in life is maths”: so? What if it is? It doesn’t mean you have to know how to calculate a GCD or a LCM, to solve algebraic equations, or to multipy fractions. I’ve never needed to.
    - “It’s a game”: yes, I agree that it can be construed as such. But I don’t find all games interesting or fun.
    - The brain is not a “muscle” although I understand what Mr Bet-David means and I agree that you have to exercise it. But there are other ways of doing that.
    - Maths gives you “better decision making”, better “certainty and confidence”: perhaps. I wouldn’t know.
    - Rekindling my old relationship: up to the age of ten, I learnt simple arithmetic and geometry. I had no great difficulty learning these, and understood why they were useful. But I never actually enjoyed the subject. There never was a real “relationship”.
Lastly, Mr Bet-David, who seems likeable, tends to simplify matters. The reasons why people hate maths are often far more complex and deep-rooted than he indicates. The problem with him and so many others is that he has never stepped inside my shoes- experienced the real sense of horror, powerlessness, boredom when faced with a maths subject… when the mind goes blank and you feel a sort of numbness in the arms and hands. I'm far from alone in feeling that way.
That is phobia. It’s far deeper than he seems to think. And until he, and others, try to understand it, maths will remain a deeply unpopular subject to many.
Let him tell us why maths, unlike any other school subject, is capable of triggering such reactions of loathing?

Math must be build on a logical foundation when taught in school.
Instead what happens is that majority try to learn it like a poem, and teachers over the years end up teaching it like a poem to have higher pass results on their record. Consumer asks, seller gives.
How maths is taught has to be restructured in school around the world. We need to move to logic based problem solving using maths as a tool, and not tech kids to learn off formulas like a poem that they will forget ones they leave school.
Programmers have books and access to online libraries at their desk because they understand the logic of programming and don't need to learn off exact code to write a program. So why do we teach kids maths like a poem that you will forget unless you recite it often is beyond my understanding.
I myself fell in love with maths after I finished University.

I personally love math and have always excelled at it, but everything can be explained by physics, and I consider math to be simply the greatest tool ever designed for the purpose of physics. 1. Vision Problems
    2. Math books having you the basics and expecting you to solve complex problems that weren't talked about. Most people will forget what they don't practice.
    3. One minor error = redo it

I love math, But I always respect other's opinion and try to help them understand math, Because, In math class, After I’m done answering a seatwork, I’m the favorite student of my teacher in math because I am fast at it and very smart, But when someone doesn’t understand, My teacher assigns me to help them, but I don’t know how to teach so.. I still love math with all my heart though.

I think math is fun. Learning new stuff and the feeling when you finally understand or solve a difficult problem. It's great. Then you have kids that say. "I haven't understood it on 10 years, so I won't understand it now" and then goes to play on his phone. Even the teacher tries to help them, they won't be successful, because they have already decided that this is to hard for them, and they will not really try at all.
Of course they hate math. No one likes things they suck at. I was never good at drawing. I liked the calming effect just coloring between the lines and stuff felt, but I hated when we was supposed to draw something, because I sucked. After a while I kind of gave up and put less effort in to drawing tasks, because I knew the outcome would be bad anyway. I assume that is what some people feel about math.
What you need is someone to teach it to you in a new way, a way you can understand. I learned perspective drawing, because that I understood how to do. A new way of drawing. While math often have one defined answer, there are many ways to get there. At one meeting of some sort in an office, the participants was asked to figure out the answer to 5*18 in their mind and just raise their hand without saying anything when thy was done. It was 6 people at that meeting and they all solved in their own unique way. I did it before looking at the answers or methods and I used a 7th method. Same problem, only 1 answer, but at least 7 different ways to find it. So while math can be static, the key to it is to learn to play with numbers. Just don't memorice that 2*7 is 14. Understand why that is true.

Hey Pat, nice to see you wearing my country jersey. :))
Great video once again, have to say that IMO behind every successful entrepreneur is math-like way of thinking, you can analyse and put every move of your on paper to predict results. And it just requires pretty much basics and lots of practice (to include as much variables as possible).
Btw-are you visiting Croatia anytime soon? As a young entrepreneur, it would be a pleasure to meet my yt mentor.
    Have a nice day :)

I hated math in high school. Now I’m majoring in physics with a minor in economics. Math is useful lol. I’m in calc 3 at the moment and I finally see its usefulness.

I think another thing worth thinking about is the excuse of not needing it. Its the biggest justification for not liking math bit there are 2 answers to go against this in my opinion. 1 is simply working at harder levels of math makes you better at the basics. and 2 the true answer that'll be too long to add it all here is that school systems are made extremely broad to teach hundreds to thousands of students. in doing so, so many people study different subjects to find what they're good at and what they like and how to proceed after school is over because you never truly stop learning unless you're already dead inside. can go much deeper but a book could almost be written about it.

Honestly this video has made me really think about why I don't really like maths and it's because I just never thought of it as being so important but now with this video opening my eyes (just let me be dramatic) I need to know maths the good and the bad before it's too late.

For me it was kinda weird I liked it but I wasnt very good at it. Then I saw interestellar movie and I got tons of chill knowing that in a way that was real and it was math related, I starting also using math (numbers) to see my improvemnt in my gym and eating habits and I changed for good a lot. And then thanks to that combination and not giving up mindset I got into entrepreneurship and your channel.

Hey, just wanted to say once again great video Patrick! It would be awesome if you could create a video on the difference between University & College. Myself and a lot of other people would appreciate it. Especially as High School students it would help us out! I just really want your opinion on if University is worth it? Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I would say number one problem when learning math is group going forward when you have missed lessons that every lesson after that is based upon. Its like teacher speaks language that you don't understand because you missed that one thing.
I once taught in ONE evening a girl who got near failing grades to above average in a math course, and I'm not a math teacher. I just found that her real problem was she wasn't taught well the basics of calculating with variables (x,y...) and years of math lessons where largely wasted because the teacher didn't do good job or she was sick and missed a lecture where they taught the basic language that the later math lessons where based upon.
