A lot of us have grown up in this age where men have been encouraged to show emotion, be vulnerable, and to depress their masculine traits. I was one of them, living most of my life thinking the phrase "men don't cry" was absurd. It didn't dawn on my how destructive this all was until I was well into my 30's. Men need to be strong and resilient leaders. Most of the time, vulnerability is indistinguishable from weakness, and weakness has been our greatest downfall as a nation for the better part of the entire last century. "Men don't cry" is stupid if taken too literally. Same with the opposite, you really shouldn't be the man that has your emotions control you. Its about being in control, knowing the right time and place. Of course you can cry... your child's wedding, having a big exciting or bad moment with them when they're young, grieving over close ones, even with someone having a hard time. The difference between falling weak to it, and controlling it, is being able to take the worse of those situations, and being able to get back up and do something about it. Fine, you had a moment to let it out, now what are you going to do to fix it? I am watching the US election with great interest, not least because of the pleasure it gives me to watch Mr Trump exhibit the qualities of statesmanship. A lot of us have grown up in this age where men have been encouraged to show emotion, be vulnerable, and to depress their masculine traits. I was one of them, living most of my life thinking the phrase "men don't cry" was absurd. It didn't dawn on my how destructive this all was until I was well into my 30's. Men need to be strong and resilient leaders. Most of the time, vulnerability is indistinguishable from weakness, and weakness has been our greatest downfall as a nation for the better part of the entire last century.
I admire Trump for not giving in to this moment with PBD. It's just something that doesn't need to be said, we all know.

Its about being in control, knowing the right time and place. Of course you can cry... your child's wedding, having a big exciting or bad moment with them when they're young, grieving over close ones, even with someone having a hard time. The difference between falling weak to it, and controlling it, is being able to take the worse of those situations, and being able to get back up and do something about it. Fine, you had a moment to let it out, now what are you going to do to fix it? If its not something you can 'do' to fix it, you can set an example on setting the right mood to fix things to make it all better going forward. When you're in a big position of power, and more people depend on you, your options for when and how to show it are more limited or weaken a lot of integrity.
