Thanks a lot. I use Finale but pretty much it’s all the same.

    Hello David!
I don't know if you're stil around, but in that case, I must ask for your help!
I have Sibelius 2022.9 (on Windows 10) and I cannot import SVGs! I did everything on the video and, through the comments, I found your comment on "Artwork Bounds". Everything done, still when I import the SVG on Sibelius, I just have a blank graphic...
I am able to see the SVG alone.
    What can I do?

Thanks! I'm not a fan of the default swirly purple or the woven paper texture. The first three things I do when installing Sibelius on a new computer: 1) Turn off the opening audio thingy. 2) Change the paper texture to plain white. 3) Change the desk image to one of the wood grains.

hey nice tutorial, very useful. I am having one problem though. When I finish with illustrator and I try to insert the graphic on sibelius it doesn't work, nothing happens. Do you know maybe what the problem is?

Hi Maria. Thanks for watching. I just tried it and I'm able to insert SVGs into Sibelius using the method in the video. Can you tell me what OS and what version of Sibelius you're using? Also, do you see the SVG image when you open it in another app? Be sure you're using the same export settings I described when you create your SVG, otherwise it won't work.

Good news! I've been looking into this issue, and I think I've found the solution. It seems that Sibelius introduced a bug at the end of 2018 that is still not fixed. The problem occurs when the shapes in your SVG doesn't go all the way to the top left corner of the graphic space. If you're creating your SVG in Illustrator, there is an easy function that will take care of this automatically. Go to Object > Artboards > Fit to Artwork Bounds, and it will shrink (or expand) the edges of the graphic space to meet the edges of your curves exactly. Then, I expect you'll have no problems at all in Sibelius. I just tested it with Illustrator 2020 and Sibelius Ultimate 2019.12.

Thank you for this video. Can I upload all the score into Illustrator and start drawing things on it? In this way, will I be able to change the notes, when i bring it back to Sibelius?

    • @DavidMacDonald
      @DavidMacDonald  2 роки тому

If I understand your question correctly, yes. The trick is to only bring the graphical notation elements back into Sibelius, not all the notes and staff lines.

@@DavidMacDonald Sure. Thank you. I’m going to install Illustrator today, to start working. Which version of Illustrator should I use on an iPad? Is there a cheaper version?

@@shookaafshar I only used Illustrator in this video because it's what I had. If I were starting today, I would probably use Affinity Designer.

This is a very good tutorial. I am having one problem though. When I finish with the file and want to add it to Sibelius, it imports a blank graphic. I have done everything that you have done here, so this is really confusing. Thanks.

Tough to say why this would be happening based on your description. Have you tried opening the SVG on its own? I would want to make sure that your graphic is visible outside of Sibelius before trying to figure out what Sibelius's problems might be.

@@DavidMacDonald Hello and thanks for the reply. I tried opening the SVG on its own and it seemed to be ok. After experimenting with other file types, it seems that exporting the file from Illustrator as a PNG with the highest resolution actually ended up working. I am able to import that file type into Sibelius and work with it with no problems. I guess it has something to do with the way Sibelius imports the files? Anyway, thanks again for your reply and the tutorial video!

Chris Shelton Music hi Chris. I am glad you got the PNG to work, but I would strongly encourage you to figure out what is going on with SVGs. Your PNG files can never be as high in quality as an SVG would be (PNG is pixel-based whereas SVG is line-based). The good news is that if you continue working with PNGs while you figure out the SVG problem, it’s easy to replace your PNGs with SVGs later. I would encourage you to reach out to Sibelius support on the Sibelius User Group or directly to Sam or anyone at Sibelius. They have helped me with things like this in the past.

I have used an iPad Pro connected to my Mac with different apps. It's very cool, but I happen to be pretty comfortable with Bezier curve handles in Illustrator already. I've done it both ways; they're both good.

I'm not a Finale user, but I believe it should basically work the same way.
