About 10 years ago I sewed up a twin size quilt to in a hotel room while my sons were at ComicCon. Staff wondered why I brought a sewing machine at check in and it opened some interesting conversations about mothers and grandmothers who sewed/quilted in their past. Kind of an interesting ice breaker. That was a great weekend.
That's some mighty fine desperation sewing. I've done similar. I was in a Ronald McDonald house for 74 days. It was awkward. and not my best sewing. I'm feeling this!
I love how swishy the skirt is! It's so full that you could fix and questionable sewing bits on the hem while wearing it! And don't be so hard on yourself. You made that thing in a hotel room, without a pattern, with limited and questionable tools, and it still came out wearable! That's an accomplishment! If you can't get the stain out, dye the whole thing a slightly darker shade of grey and it should cover everything. (This will also work to cover blood stains on your favourite pants...) In my approx. 25 years of sewing, I have found that most tension issues are the fault of the bobbin region, with the occasional top-thread-jumping-out-of-place issue. The first things I check for are lint and thread placement, and rectifying those issues fixes 98% of problems. The remaining 2% shall not be mentioned here because they are frightening.
I live in far south Texas (south of everything in the lower 48 except the Florida keys, so always hot), and I’d wear it over a tank top or thin tshirt - the loose skirt would make up for the polyester (maybe). Or as a beach coverup.
I was going to say I could listen to you all day, but in reality I would probably need to lie down in a dark room after a couple of hours just to recover from the laugh aches.
I’m sitting here in central Florida hand sewing a pair of tap pants because I don’t have the energy to fight with my machine. But I’m actually sewing 🪡 I like the pinafore
YEAH YOU! You had LOTS of mountains to scale in that project, and you overcame! Interfacing tip: one can use just another layer of the same fabric. I salute you for using the hotel time with which you were stuck to DO something.
This was a fun project! As someone who services sewing machines about 3/4 of the machines I see have problems in the bobbin area with tension, or it eats the thread, or etc. so you are not alone in that. Your jumper turned out really cute considering what you were working with.
I'm just about to hit 'play'. You made a thing. In a hotel room. From thrifted fabric. And no (bleep) pattern... YOU ARE A HERO. 'Kay. Now to watch. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
It came out so cute. Here's to improvising sewing projects. Nice filming and editing too. My guess for a seam ripper hack would be to start the opening with a straight razor. Sounds like overkill, I know, but the edge will (hopefully) limited to the one thread. I've had, um, mixed results. I see what you need by needing layers. Up here we're down to what the locals lovingly refer to as 'snot snow'. It's dark, lumpy, cold and just won't go away. Tis the season? I love the reaction people have to snow...
Kudos to you for doing anything in the absolute crap that is hotel lighting. I know I’ve done con crunching at the hotel and hooooo boy!!! That lighting is sucky!!!!!
As someone with a 1950's sewing machine, I have given up on good looking buttonholes (unless I sew them by hand, which I rarely have energy for). On the plus side this machine is built like a tank and has faithfully put up with my sewing shenanigans, no matter how many layers there are. And thank you for reminding me to NOT listen to my brain when it wants to "just wing it".
I can totally empathize with that. It's crazy how machines can get very temperamental with bobbins oh, that is usually 2/3 of what ends up being wrong with my machine. It even happens with nicer machines, or rather familiar ones.
Ok, but now you’re making ME want to make a bedsheet pinafore with no pattern! I don’t know if the world is ready for that 😂 This was great btw! Thanks for some smiles and some - possibly bad - ideas!
I love the surprises you have on your channel. At first I thought you were gonna hand sew it! I'm travelling to Portugal next month and thinking I'll take a hand sewing project with me. I use to crochet while travelling but yarn takes up space. Oh my, I just noticed in the column to my left, you tried to make a cape on a plane! LOL
Shout out to all my hotel room sewing peeps! I've done this more times than I care to remember, lol. Thrift, gift. They both end in "ift"... As far as markings on the machine, those lines on your soleplate are 1/8" apart. The 5/8" line is the one with the hole in it and the 1" line is the one farthest to the right. All things considered, this is well done. You had suboptimal conditions and Did The Thing!
I have literally been angsting over the desire to make a pinafore and having no pattern. I think that you gave me the courage to wing it 🤔 Yours turned out so beautiful
Some months ago, I bought the more adorable fine-wale corduroy (red with tiny green tractors all over) with the intent of making a jumper dress of some kind. this inspires me to do the thing! (Never mind that I need to be working on a Victorian corset instead. Procraftination!)
That machine is a similar model to the one I learned on, and oh boy they are a fussy beast. They can behave so well and then suddenly: bonus chaos. I also realised after owning it for a decade that I was threading it wrong, in two ways. Which... could also explain the bonus chaos. But I am also very grateful I was able to upgrade to a digital machine and actually use all the shiny stitch options, as the previous machine I only had the straight stitch foot for some reason? But this video is certainly helping me gear up for progressing my pinafore/apron projects, truly a great design for trial and see. ^_^
When my daughter got married, it was at her fiance's church, which is about 60 miles from home, so we got a hotel, it was just easier. The bridesmaids ordered their gowns from a Chinese mail order company, and 2 of the bridesmaids did not try in their dresses until after the rehearsal dinner Friday night! I get a phone call from the bride "moooooommmmmmmm. Heeeellllllppppp!" The 2 dresses were literally coming unstitched! The front desk kindly gave me those travel sewing kits where the thread is already attached to the needle. At 11 pm the night before a 9 am wedding, I started hand stitching 1/2" wide horizontal pleats back onto the dress liner. That was fun! 🙄

I love your channel 💕 Don't you mean thrift and gift by no means I'm being snarky but Haute Couture means high sewing I hope that I spelled that right.
You're adorable running around in the snow. Also, that pinafore top is surprisingly well-behaved for not having darts. Do you think the angle of the straps helps with that?
I love finding videos like these such talent and time need to go into these projects and you did fab 😊 but I feel like I'm going to come across one of these videos and it's going to be a parody of someone getting inside a duvet cover like a ghost and call it a outfit 😂😂😂
I was a little suspicious of the bow until you added it to the dress and you were 100% right! It was needed! 😁 It did remind me of my grandma, but tbh… I kinda love that it made us both think about them.
I love this!!! I'm actually excited to try to make something like this, which is huge because I have had project paralysis for like months now 😅. It looks so cute on you, especially with that blue top, beautiful!!❤️❤️
I packed for a two day trip that turned into two weeks. I went to a brand names for way less store and Walmart but everything I found didn't fit right so I did a lot of hand sewing.
Turned out beautifully- nice swoosh factor- and I always look forward to your adventures! I can’t help but be curious of the layout of your hotel room…is there a ceiling fan right behind the bed???
Sewing machines and I no longer work well together. Hand-sewing is it for me these days. With my theater group I add embellishments and make repairs and someone else makes the body of the garment.

Because you weren’t spending your days figuring out and improvising enough… “When I have some time to not think about the job, I’m going to give myself a challenge where I have none of my familiar tools or supplies! Muahhaha!” The only kind thing you did for yourself was not give yourself a ratings-bait American reality show style producer showing up, doubling the project scope and informing you, that your success will be judged on how well you make snow angels while sewing in the zipper.
Hi Anne, I don’t give weight to swear words like MF, and since this is my channel I am going to speak like I normally do. I was policed on language like this growing up, so I won’t be changing that language choice.
Really glad to see you channel your inner Samuel L. Jackson on camera… (for the record, she channels him often while not on camera, too!) 😆
lol Good thing we are alike!
first thought when I saw this. "oh Lord, she stole bedsheets from a hotel!" I love this dress! it's super cute on you too
Bwahaha!! Those sheets would’ve been cleaner. 😂😂😂

Yeah I am thinking about making a light weight puffy blouse to go with it this summer.
I was going to say I could listen to you all day, but in reality I would probably need to lie down in a dark room after a couple of hours just to recover from the laugh aches.

So, turned out cute AND you are hilarious 😆

DAMN girl!!! that sheet made a great jumper!!!! looks very cute over the dark blue dress...
Thank you so much Mary!
Here's a helpful tip use some distilled vinegar to clean the iron fill it in and let it heat up. I like it
Oh interesting I will keep that tidbit in my brain the next time I get one of these crazy ideas.
Measure from the sewing machines needle over to your right hand side Mark your seam allowance with some gaffers tape.
It was a borrowed machine, and while the running joke is SM's always have gaff tape, we usually don't have it in our hotel rooms.
This was a fun project! As someone who services sewing machines about 3/4 of the machines I see have problems in the bobbin area with tension, or it eats the thread, or etc. so you are not alone in that. Your jumper turned out really cute considering what you were working with.
Thank you so much! I didn't think I could be that stressed while using a machine... i was WRONG!
I'm just about to hit 'play'. You made a thing. In a hotel room. From thrifted fabric. And no (bleep) pattern...
YOU ARE A HERO.
'Kay. Now to watch.

Shockingly the lighting that that room wasn't the worst I have ever seen. But it still wasn't ideal.
As someone with a 1950's sewing machine, I have given up on good looking buttonholes (unless I sew them by hand, which I rarely have energy for). On the plus side this machine is built like a tank and has faithfully put up with my sewing shenanigans, no matter how many layers there are.

The will to make is always enough.♥️
RIGHT!
Pinafore is adorable. But as a retired theater techie, I ask HOW DID YOU SLEEP?
I mean... caffeine fixes everything right? (At least that is what theatre school taught me)
I can totally empathize with that. It's crazy how machines can get very temperamental with bobbins oh, that is usually 2/3 of what ends up being wrong with my machine. It even happens with nicer machines, or rather familiar ones.
Right the dang bobbin! Every time!
Ok, but now you’re making ME want to make a bedsheet pinafore with no pattern! I don’t know if the world is ready for that 😂 This was great btw! Thanks for some smiles and some - possibly bad - ideas!
YES!!! Do it!!!
Turned out cute! And, bruh, I'd just be like "eh, I'll just toss on a decorative belt and call it a day" I refuse to dissect waistbands.
That is adorable. I know you kind of had a hard time, but it turned out great. BTW, I think it is funny that you find NC as a 'cold' state... sorry.
Thank you! And yes, it was challenging, but I love a good challenge.
This brought me so much joy! 😭 your perseverance and don't-give-a-hoot attitude takes the pressure off my current (ahem-first-) project

Amazing! Hotel sewing for "some kind of" LIFE! It certainly isn't for everyone.
Adversity births some amazing creations my Dear and this is one of them!!
Aww thank you so much!!

Oh fantastic! I hope yours turns out great!
Despite being gray, I'm getting Belle vibes, especially because of the blue
Yes the more I look at it the more I think I need a white one to go full Belle.
This crazy vlog was awesome hehe and it looks amazing on you xx
Thank you so much Beverly!

@@catherinemckegney8344 aweee thank you!
This is such an amazing project!! I think it looks amazing, and very cute!!
It really suits you!
Thank you!
You did a thing! I'm pretty impressed with this, honestly. If there's an up side to polyester, it tends to be warm in layers! *chuckle*
Also it looks like it fits pretty well, too. So, well done!
Thank you! I am quite proud of myself because it was only slightly lopsided. 😂
i really like the jumper dress… I would wear it ❤
Thank you!!

@@StephanieCanada A pinafore, of course! (though that'll have to wait, a wool skirt, wool kirtle, and additional linen shift are on the docket first)
So cute!! A big project in a weird environment= crushed it! Love the side comments and true Stefanie coming out 😜
Cool result in an interesting venue.
I love your channel 💕 Don't you mean thrift and gift by no means I'm being snarky but Haute Couture means high sewing I hope that I spelled that right.
I mean if someone wants to call my wonky-ass stitches "intentional" then MAYBE it would qualify for Haute Couture. 😂
I think this turned out super cute! Also any of us who’ve made things out of sheets know that stain life 😂
Thanks lady! And yeah, that sheet life can be rough!
It looks good, I think Yoda was a big help 😉
Thank you! And yes, I think Grogu kept me on track.

you did really well considering what you were working with
Thank you Sam!
Hi Stephanie, I'm new to your channel and loved this video. What a fun adventure! Nice job :)
I really like the pinafore! I hope you do wear it some, maybe with a little white cotton top under...

Thank you Liz!

Not bad for what you had to work with!
Right! I am still quite proud of myself for making it work.
I absolutely love this!

Darn now I want to try this my self😂
If you end up doing it, tag me on IG I would love to see.

No this was a two story hotel room in NC. So the ceiling fan was above the living room on the bottom level.
good job, regarding the waistband, instead of ripping out, what about camoflage with embroidery or appliquing with a ribbon?
Oh now THAT is a good idea!
