  • Metabolic rate is how much energy (calories) your body uses in a day for normal function. Calorie restricted diets lower metabolic rate, and this limits weight loss, and is often called starvation mode. Dr. Jason Fung explains why fasting does not lower metabolic rate thus allowing you to avoid the dreaded starvation mode that leads to weight loss plateau. Check out my blog at / drjasonfung

      What if your bodyfat is already low BEFORE the fast. I have done two separate 5 day fasts, in the first one, I was 20 lbs overweight but in the second I was maybe 3 lbs overweight. In the first fast I lost 8 lbs but in the second, I lost NO weight. Is it possible I was in starvation mode during the second fast?

    I found that fasting goals without an end date really did help. I always hear that, "it's a marathon not a sprint" and that is SO TRUE. To put that into practice, I regularly reminded myself of how long it took to GAIN the weight, it should take at least that long (or longer!) to lose it. THat really helped keep me on track. I lost 55 pounds and have been able to keep it off with IF.

    I reversed my diabetes 10 years ago by changing my lifestyle...eating healthy and staying active everyday. I started doing 24 hour fasts about a year ago...as I age, I don’t feel the need to eat everyday, my body doesn’t crave food at all. I usually fast 48 hours, have a day of eating, and resume again. I also don’t let it consume my life, if a friend invites me for lunch, I’m there! I just start all over when done. Lol! I’ve maintained my weight, my A1C stays at 5.5 (it was 12.8 ten years ago!) and I have so much energy and feel great, even through rotator cuff surgery. I believe that’s why I healed so quickly. I’ll be 60 in 2 years and looking forward to it! Fasting keeps me young!😉 and lastly, my doctor was fantastic when I was initially diagnosed. He believed in me and gave me a chance to reversed this on my own. He referred me to a registered dietitian and I educated myself. It can be done. Thank you, Dr Fung...I continue to learn so much with your videos! Thank you for all you do 😎

    The problem with calorie restricted diets, in many cases, is that they don't allow the insulin levels to come down enough for the body to access the fat reserves. They (referring to the people on the calorie restricted diet) are burning more calories than they are consuming, but they still don't have access to the stored energy, so something has to give. Thus the metabolic rate ends up being reduced. The key point continues to be bringing down chronically high insulin levels so that the body can access its fat reserves, and until the insulin comes down, the body will not go into a catabolic state, and no significant amounts of body fat will be consumed.

      Dr. Fung, Dr, Ywes and Dr Berg have been massive helps in teaching this 56 year old things I should have understood years ago. I have never taken and illicit drug or ever drank alcohol but just this year realized how I used food to manage stress causing a life of addiction. They have been so helpful in understanding the science and the psychology that has broken me free. I do not live on a diet. @@gypsygirl9 Yeah in theory, but it's not that simple. For example if I wanna lose 2,5 lbs a week I have to eat ~1700 kcal a day. Spreading it out to 4 or 5 meals makes it almost impossible to go through a day for me. I'll be hangry all the time. Instead when I apply fasting, I go to work on an empty stomache, I usually don't get hungry at all, because I'm occupied with work. I eat a big meal at 12:30 ~800 kcal and then I go until evening and eat another big meal at 6:30 and I fast until the next day(18:6) that makes it alot easier to apply a calorie deficit. Of course it's all from my personal experience and it's not scientifc, just anecdote.
      Simple calorie counting + eating at random times doesn't work for me.(needs a lot more will power)
      There's something going on hormonally that I can't explain but I feel it.

    Thank you dr Fung! Regarding the "caveman metabolism": I notice that I like working out while fasting. One would expect that in "starvation mode" you don't have any pleasure sweating. The opposite is true: working out allows you to fight the hunger feeling and you also get very good performance. I think it's correlated with the evolution reasoning you mention: modern workout is the equivalent of hunting, you need to be good at it when fasted.

    To add to Dr. Fong's statement, "It's not a race but a marathon". As you go through your journey of a low carb/fasting lifestyle, you'll find that you may platto. This is where periodic extended fasts can help. I also think these plattos can possibly be the body making use of the extra skin. The scale may not be moving much but you might notice your shape looking more cut and less wrinkles.

    • @nicoles5569
      @nicoles5569 3 роки тому +2

      This is helpful, but how do you know if it's a plateau, or it's not working (like if the plateau has lasted a while ... are you still on a plateau, or is it time to switch things up?)

    • @howiesfunware
      @howiesfunware 3 роки тому +11

      @@nicoles5569 The body always adapts because it's a survival mechanism so you should always change it up. Everyday I do an 8/16 or 6/18 by just skipping breakfast. I'll randomly skip lunch and do an OMAD and sometimes I'll fast over the weekend for a 48 hour fast. So keep changing it up and use extended fasts to help break through the platto. Perhaps pull back more on carbs and/or protein. Everyone's body is different so experiment to see what works for you. My wife's body has been extra stubborn so she skips two days a week (Monday & Thursday) to help keep her progress going. Also, be sure to get some exercise. By exercise I mean take a leisure walk or bike ride. If you're job requires you to sit for long periods of time, get up and walk around a bit through out the day. Use the farthest bathroom for your bathroom breaks, etc.

      He is wrong. It is a race. It has already been proven via the Matador study that your body starts reducing its metabolic rate as soon as 2 weeks after realizing your calories have reduced. Thus the key to losing is losing quickly and then taking a break.

    • @flipdiva0007
      @flipdiva0007 3 роки тому +1

      @@CelineNoyce the MATADOR diet is basically saying the same thing. It only allows you calorie deprivation for a short time (2 weeks) then back to normal calories for 2 weeks. Then repeat. This is the same long term strategy as Fasting then re-feeding with no calorie deprivation. Weight loss is always long term unless you only have a couple pounds to lose.
