  • Secondaries should be seen as one more opportunity to impress admissions committees. Here are 4 quick tips to convince programs to choose you.
First, submit secondaries within 2 weeks of receiving them. Your chances of acceptance decrease the longer you wait due to rolling admissions. Start early and remain at the front of the pack throughout the application process.
This is an undeniably limited time frame, which is why it’s critical to begin preparing early.
Second, begin drafting your responses in advance. While the questions will vary slightly from school to school, most schools use the same or very similar questions from the preceding year.
Pre-drafting will help you stick to the 2-week timeline, as you will receive many secondary requests around the same time.
Third, avoid cookie-cutter responses. Don’t regurgitate the school’s mission statement or list the qualities that make you a great candidate. Show, don’t tell.
Lastly, illustrate why you’re an ideal fit. How would you specifically contribute to the school and benefit from that program in particular?
Focus on your personal story and the qualities, skills, and experiences that make you unique.
