The 4.6L 2V is THE best engine option of the 98-08 Ford F150s. Thing is damn near indestructible. I service ones at work with 300k or more on the clock all the time. And I've talked to guys who have put about million miles on them.
I am not saying you will for sure have all of these issues, these are just issues that may potentially come up during the time you own the truck. I get a lot of people taking these videos out of context and saying they don't have these issues, so the video is false. When, in fact, there are many people in the comment section validating the video. Also, on the V6 motor, the spark plugs popping out aren't nearly as frequent as the V8 models. There have been quite a few people reporting the spark plugs popping out in their v6 4.2ls, and that's mainly due to the 5 treads Ford used in the cylinder head, when a spark plug has 10 treads. Nevertheless, my goal is to help others in any way and as many ways as I can. So, I hope this helped you out.
Thanks for the video. I recently got an 04' Lariat. Only 115k miles now. Did the tune up and it was the first. 1 original plug broke on its way out. He had to get the kit as you mentioned. He also noticed the tick and I have since. Replaced the vct sensors first but now its probably the timing chain he said. I think your spot on and the rust I can confirm for anybody too. My buddy had to sell his 05 or 6 because the frame was ready to crack. Never seen a frame like that. Its michigan but it was never a salt truck. Thank God he caught it and nobody got hurt. Also for the fact your making people aware of it 🙏
Been driving mine for 18 years. 2005 F150 Supercab 4.6L V8. I still see them on the road everywhere. I can't say the same about Chevy and Dodge from the same era. Don't talk shit at the end of your video when you don't actually know anything.
For starters I have literally had none of these issues with my 2006 F150. Also, I can tell that this guy gets all of his car "knowledge" from the internet. No actual experience.
I’m glad man! There are a lot of people who have had these issues, and a lot of people who haven’t had many at all. I’m definitely not saying do not buy one, these are just the issues that usually come up when the truck does have issues.
I had an 05 that the cam phasers went out, but a brief history about it. A buddy bought it from me on payments and after about 2 years he wasn’t keeping up on the payments so I ended up taking it back and in the 2 years and close to 50,000 that he had it he never once changed the oil or air filter. The air filter had a 1/4” of dirt debris and even bird feathers over it. So I contribute that issue to it’s recent maintenance history. Other than that it was one of the best vehicles I’ve ever owned.
I bought my 04 with 98k last year after putting 30k on it just got SCT tuner and she runs great. I plan on doing lock out and maybe supercharger. Love the way it handles and sounds with new dual exhaust. It's like any car runs great when you buy it and when warranty runs out or your in a tight spot something breaks.
I drove my 5.4 3v 06 till it had 180k miles no problem. But dint oil changes on time and eventually drove it with no oil in the motor.Blew the engine and had to get a rebuilt engine for $3800.I wish I would have known the issues of changing oil every 3k to 5k miles.I hope my engine lasts longer now.I have the new Melling 340hv pump and steel tensioners along with the new upgraded Ford phasers. So far I got 10,000k miles on new motor with full synthetic 5w30 in it and am planning to service it religiously.I hear all the problems got worked out over the years with all the upgrades I just mentioned I guess I'll find out if it does start giving me problems I will probably sell it.But for now I love my truck
I have an 07 XLT Supercab with the 5.4L Triton V8 and 2WD. 175k miles. Just did a 1300 miles road trip too. Replaced the spark plugs for $500 and just did rear brakes for another $500 all in the last year. So basic maintenance. Mechanically, I have never been left stranded. Same engine and transmission. It loves going 85MPH on the highway for hours at a time. Just wish the airbag light and parking brake sensor would go off, but not messing with it. It’s got a 36 gallon fuel tank so great highway cruiser and towing vehicle. I love it. It’s old and the insurance is cheap!
I have a 01, 3500 dually with very close to 400,000 miles 8.1 L. Gas motor and a Allison Transmission that shifts like new... I'm here though because I'm about to trade in for one that's thousands of dollars above what i pay for mine with a 145k miles Plus i tow 30ft travel trailer.
I got this little baby. Beside rebuilding transmission due to my stupidity it runs great. Pushing 215k miles and still loving the heck out of it. I am planing to replace the oil pump for the new high flow oil pump but that is just a winter project .
2 window regulators Cam phasers Front end bushing a couple of times . And 16 years later I still have my 05 lariat f150 in excellent condition. Wouldn’t trade it for anything. Is it perfect? NO! No vehicle is.
Mine has 221k miles king ranch and has been an amazing vehicle with zero problems. You forgot ball joint’s, wheel bearings and the 4x4 vacuum controlled hubs. But with Chevy, 4l60e rebuilds ain’t cheap either
I have not had any problem with the ones I mentioned except for the consumer things. One of the most powerful trucks I have used for 10 years is the year 2005.
One thing that needs to be known as far as coil pack failure. In some instances the coolant bypass in the intake manifold can crack, causing it to weep coolant/water into the plug wells, increasing resistance and causing the coil to fail. This problem is particularly a bitch to solve because you may not see any weeping along the intake manifold when the system has no pressure (is not hot and flowing coolant). It will literally look like moisture is "coming from nowhere and getting into the plug well. The coolant bypass in the intake is aluminum but sandwiched between two plastic components with rubber seals. Heat-cycling causes the plastic to become brittle, and a chunk will break off, deforming the seal and allowing coolant to slip by the underside of the intake manifold along the deck, and into a plug well. Again: This may or may not be externally visible. The only sign you will get is a thrown code for the offending cylinder, which you then pull the coil out and it's literally wet, as in actual water is in the plug well. The coolant bypass problem is very well known, and mechanics have likely run into it before. Another issue you did not cover: The tabs or lock end of the coil harness pigtails may snap off, causing the pigtail itself to not securely fasten to the coil. This is the cause of so many coil codes. You may think you slid it firmly onto the coil, but then the engine vibrations and harmonics will back it off while driving. The worst part about this condition is that sometimes it throws a code for a good cylinder that resides on the same journal. (e.g. #1 pigtail tab is broken and backed off, but ecm throws code for #5.) In the 11th gen, the engine you want for insanely high reliability Is the 4.6 2v mated to the 4r70/75. It's an engine with enough low end torque to pull a decent trailer load (5k lbs or so) on flat or slightly inclined ground while being mated to a transmission that can handle significantly more torque than the 4.6 2v makes from the factory. Before the peanut gallery says something incorrect, both the Triton and 2v could be had in an 11th gen, depending on year. If I were running a landscaping crew or the like, I would avoid the problematic 5.4, and find a 4.6 2v truck and call it a day. It won't win you any races, but it will pull your lawncare trailer and equipment and probably give you very few problems.
@Eric Esposito Yeah this is extremely common. Mine pulls hard too but has a small, scarcely noticeable but definitely there idle vibration. I'm betting it's a vacuum issue or they're just prone to dirty MAFs. Looking at F150 forums all over the place, this seems to be a reality with these trucks.
4.6 3 valve engines were not in F150 trucks until 2009 and they do not have the spark plug issues. The 2009-10 3 valve 4.6 was only on the XLT and up. The XL still had the 2 valve 4.6 with the 4 speed automatic transmission.
I can confirm the failure tendency of the fuel pump driver module. Fortunately, it’s an inexpensive part and (as long as you can drop the spare tire) easy and accessible to change. Also, I have a host of power window/lock issues, but it does all the things a truck needs to do. I’m happy with my 04 FX4 model.
I have a 2008 Lariat. 120 000 miles . With the short updated spark plugs (from factory) . So far operates smooth. But 2 things I habitually do since I got it. Always use 91 gas. And change the engine oil really often..
I still have the '05 5.4 I bought new. It only has 125 thousand miles on it because it a road trip/vacation vehicle. It's been the best truck I've ever owned and has given me no troubles. I will say however, the engine is loud and coarse. Aside from that, it's really a great truck. Oil changed every 4000 miles and the engine sounds like it should...loud and coarse but not making any of the "telltale" noises of imminent failure. I'm considering dropping a few grand into the engine to "bulletproof" it...HP oil pump, updated roller rockers and VCT, manifold bolts, etc...basically making the engine good to go for the long term. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than a new/newer used truck without all the electronic gadgets and gizmos that go wrong. 17 MPG highway (loaded) and about 14 in the city.
I am on my Second (USED) 2008 F150 4x4 Crew Cab now with 373,000 miles on it with no transmission or major issues. YET! This is my second one. My First 2008, Bought in 2008 (NEW) and got me to 413,000 miles when I sold it with minimal issues and good transmission. And I bet it would've gotten me to 500,000. I will only buy the 2008 model because well I have yet to have ANY truck get me to nearly half a million miles without a transmission or motor issues. the 2008 Model has proven its worth for me. So if you claim that these trucks have serious issues, you might completely full of &^#$#. Now I'm certain "some" F150s have issues but that's most likely to the previous owners treating them like dirt. I'm on number two and well on my way to half a million miles. Hardly anyone keeps a truck that long anyway.
Stating the issues that usually happen when these trucks break is not BS. The entitlement some of y’all have. Anyways, I’m glad you have had a flawless truck, my friend! It goes to show that if you take care of your car, in most cases, it will last a long time.
The 4.6 didn't change to 3v in the trucks till the 12th gen. Even then not all 4.6 12th gen are 3v. The truck will have the 6 speed auto if it's a 4.6 3v.
I have well maintained my 2004 5.4 3v FX4 . 3 weeks ago i pulled out a 2016 550 6.7 powerstroke flatbed that was bottomed out in a muddy ditch. 5.4 3v updated phasers. Ford racing lifters. 2008 f150 with the 4.6, had to replace engine at 97,000m front ball joint, driver side window starting to stick, now has 127,000m and all is good, no interior tears or fading paint either.

Got a question for you. I ended up with 2007 f150 fx4 5.4. Each window switch stop working. Driver switches work fine. Bad mistake buying this one 2 years ago. I have the knocking does sound like no oil in and around the valves. P00019 p0012 and couple of others I can't remember. I was a chevy guy, just wish I saved my money. I've replaced sensors now it still rides bad around 45 to 65. Truck was cheap I needed 4x4 bad snow year. Slow crawling works great. Thank you for the video.
My old work had a 2004 F150 as a company truck, I worked security and took it to drive around the facility at night, I had to take it four times a night and it had around 120K miles, I used to BEAT that thing flying around through potholes and puddles and on the terrible ground around the shipyard due to cranes tearing up the ground. That truck never needed anything after doing that for months! I personally didn't like the 5 and a half foot bed and I didn't like the interior design. But I can't argue about how strong they are. Definitely recommend.
My '04 Lariat with 68k has been good overall, but all window regulators broke in first 4 years, lower intake manifold replaced 2 years ago, 4x4 transfer case motor replaced last year, and EXPENSIVE E-brake replacement yesterday. A big problem was the rear window seal failed in 2014, allowing water to run into the voids where it fried electrical lines and rotted the cab corners. Check under your door sill covers for moisture, and inspect your rear window seal where it contacts the rear cab, from driver side to passenger, before you have costly issues.
I bought mine 2007 XL F150 V6 with 112k Miles inmediatly do the service myself change sparkplugs was easy no issues at all won't need any special tool, then gas filter pretty easy job, change oil very cheap too, flush the coolant peace Of cake. Ford parts are easy to get. Overall after a year Of own it has been reliable and 17MPG average not Bad for a 14 years old truck. Next i want to flush the trans oil and install a cooler trans oil.
08 5.4 108k miles had since 10- only issue really is the passenger exhaust manifold. Brian of fordtechmakuloco is the Master Of Reality on the 5.4s, he really goes Into The Void to expose their vulnerabilities.
I have 2004 F150 4.6 2 valve with 196700 miles and the only problem I had was 4r75 trans mission had to be rebuilt because previous owner neglected the transmission service and now the drivers power window switches have stopped working.
Wish I had known this truck was going to be trouble before I bought it new in 2008. Every engine problem he described, I had. I finally replaced the engine, and a bunch of other stuff recently because that Triton engine was junk. Then $11,000 later, I find I also have rust through on rear fender panels under the plastic trim. Otherwise, it's a nice truck. Wouldn't buy another one though.
Yeah buy a shevy if you like cheese grade frame and suspension. Ohh and you don’t have to replace worn out trimming chains on a shevy after 150000 miles ?
Loved my 2008, but no matter what I did the IWEs would rachet. Wouldn't disengage completely AND wouldn't engage completely. The prob would go away when the truck was on a lift, then come back a few days later. I bought every part from the solenoid down to the IWE hubs all new lines, etc and it still did it. Both sides held vacuum when tested, all check valves were new and tested as working. Had to get rid of her. Worst 4x4 design known to man. Should've left well enough alone with manual locking hubs and floor transfer case shifter
My 2005 5.4L just gave out on me 2 weeks ago. Everything was working great until one day I went to turn it on, it was on for about 2 seconds and then shut off. It cranks but does not turn on. I changed the fuel pump modulator, the camshaft sensors and nothing. I have not yet tried the crankshaft sensor. I was reading that it could but the camphaser pin(s) that could have broken but I’m not sure. Any other ideas of what it might be? I thought electrical since when it’s cranking you can smell gas but spark plugs and coils were replaced just over a year ago and not driven too much because of COVID.
lets compare 2004 lariat and 2004 whatever high end chev is........id rather drive a truck that gives me feelings, and fix it once in a while. 04 Lariat is the best imo out of 04-08. They built them cheaper starting 05
@@tomfreakingford The XLT IS a CHEAP model!! Why would you expect it to look luxurious? An XLT is a long way from being a King Ranch or a Lariat or even an FX4 for that matter. So stop beating up on Ford trucks when you’re definitely NOT comparing apples to apples!
You are honestly pretty spot on about them. If Chevy released the 2007 Silverado in 2004 would have been great.

Also for the fact your making people aware of it 🙏
The 5.4l engine has been made for many years and is a very reliable v8 motor until its end of production in 2010.
Ford just has a problem with spark plugs. It was a problem on Tauruses too
Been driving mine for 18 years.
It do 120mph down dirt roads and it feels like you are driven a Cadillac
Don't do lockouts just replace the timing chain, tensioners, phasers and upgrades to a melling oil pump
My 05 has 270k on the clock and still going strong. 🤞🏻
🙏
That’s awesome! Have you had any major issues with it?
294k here on a 07
I'm right there behind ya. Just had my rear band break on my tranny and fixed it. Now I'm back to business.
230! Lol lets go rebuilt trans saving for rebuild of engine and tune after
Don't buy a chevy you are asking to take long walks very often, just buy the ford.
I have a 01, 3500 dually with very close to 400,000 miles
8.1 L. Gas motor and a Allison Transmission that shifts like new...
I'm here though because I'm about to trade in for one that's thousands of dollars above what i pay for mine with a 145k miles
Plus i tow 30ft travel trailer.
Truck dealer for 30 years and sold thousands of trucks. Damn 04 and 05 Ford F150 pick ups with 5.4 engines about broke me.
DONT BUY!
I got this little baby. Beside rebuilding transmission due to my stupidity it runs great. Pushing 215k miles and still loving the heck out of it. I am planing to replace the oil pump for the new high flow oil pump but that is just a winter project .
This guys accent slips from a little bit British a little bit Indian to a little bit Latin . Impressive
Yea hybrid
😂
Mine has 225000 I changed timing set at 117000 along with phasers and it still pulls 10000 lbs
Why doesn't it come with a tow controller
2 window regulators
Cam phasers
Front end bushing a couple of times .
2005 Ford F150 stx is still running like a champ!!! As long as you take of her aka "car" , she'll take care of you!!!!
That's the same truck I got. Red single cab 2wd.
@@Big_Ben1988 it can be 5 below zero and she starts right up after sitting 2 days under a blanket of snow!!!
Stx 2004 she's going strong
Bought my 2006 4.6 flareside new, it now has 130.000 miles on it and its still running great.
I have an 08 with 160,000 and it's still running good
Spark plugs blowing out of the head is not a common problem for 04-08 it’s a common problem for 97-03.
Another issue you did not cover:
The tabs or lock end of the coil harness pigtails may snap off, causing the pigtail itself to not securely fasten to the coil.
This is the cause of so many coil codes.
You may think you slid it firmly onto the coil, but then the engine vibrations and harmonics will back it off while driving.
The worst part about this condition is that sometimes it throws a code for a good cylinder that resides on the same journal. (e.g. #1 pigtail tab is broken and backed off, but ecm throws code for #5.)
In the 11th gen, the engine you want for insanely high reliability Is the 4.6 2v mated to the 4r70/75.
Thanks for the info. 4.6 2v 11th gen owner here wondering if I got lucky or what. Guess I did
I have an 07 4.6 V8 2 valve and has 110k and blew a spark plug in June 2021 but no other major issues 🤞🏻
My 08 f150 has 420,000 km. Replaced transmission and manifolds. Still runs great and doesn’t burn any oil
4.6 3 valve engines were not in F150 trucks until 2009 and they do not have the spark plug issues. The 2009-10 3 valve 4.6 was only on the XLT and up. The XL still had the 2 valve 4.6 with the 4 speed automatic transmission.
2008 was an 11th gen with 4.6 Triton availability. Prior to this it was the 248hp 2v.
Thanks, I have 2006 F150 and I just changed my plugs .
I've always preferred Toyota tundra but the f150 is still a great truck
I can respect a Toyota too they are tough off road regardless what other people say.
Tundra and Tacoma are the best Asian trucks and F150 is the best American truck.
I have a 2008 Lariat. 120 000 miles . With the short updated spark plugs (from factory) . So far operates smooth. But 2 things I habitually do since I got it. Always use 91 gas. And change the engine oil really often..
MUST HAVE A THICK WALLET TO FILL 91 OCTANE
04 5.4 lariat has 220k miles and running better than ever! Keep it well maintained and it will keep you on the road!
I have well maintained my 2004 5.4 3v FX4 . 3 weeks ago i pulled out a 2016 550 6.7 powerstroke flatbed that was bottomed out in a muddy ditch. 5.4 3v updated phasers. Ford racing lifters. Melling high pressure oil pump/Banks CAI /4r75e/ . 6inch pro comp lift/ Falkens 325/60/18 on Weld Racing wheels/ 3.73 rear.
2008 f150 with the 4.6, had to replace engine at 97,000m front ball joint, driver side window starting to stick, now has 127,000m and all is good, no interior tears or fading paint either.
I have a 2006 F150 Lariat Super Crew and love it. I have 300K miles on the motor and never had any major problems with it. Normal ware. I hope to get another 300k out of it. Some people just have bad luck with vehicles
How about the transmission tho
So that’s what that ticking noise is lol, i’ll check out my manifold tomorrow
Let me know mine ticks too and it only has 102,000 miles. 2005 5.4
I had an 08 5.4, only annoying issue with me was the 4speed auto, it made the engine feel gutless in the city.
i crashed through a ditch and the airbags didnt come on
My '04 Lariat with 68k has been good overall, but all window regulators broke in first 4 years, lower intake manifold replaced 2 years ago, 4x4 transfer case motor replaced last year, and EXPENSIVE E-brake replacement yesterday.
A big problem was the rear window seal failed in 2014, allowing water to run into the voids where it fried electrical lines and rotted the cab corners. Check under your door sill covers for moisture, and inspect your rear window seal where it contacts the rear cab, from driver side to passenger, before you have costly issues.
The seal around the light on the back of the cab is notorious for what you described.
You said one thing right! It's just you, my 2004 f150 STX still kicking, ain't nobody trying to hear that BS.
Did you know that just because you don’t have the issues, that the issues still actually happen?
I bought mine 2007 XL F150 V6 with 112k Miles inmediatly do the service myself change sparkplugs was easy no issues at all won't need any special tool, then gas filter pretty easy job, change oil very cheap too, flush the coolant peace Of cake. Ford parts are easy to get. Overall after a year Of own it has been reliable and 17MPG average not Bad for a 14 years old truck. Next i want to flush the trans oil and install a cooler trans oil.
I think every truck has issues no matter what due to time and wear.
5/30 full synthetic oil and change it 3-5000 miles.
I thought this generation F150 took 5W20? I know mine does.
05 F150 STX 4x4 still running strong, only a ac compressoor, power steering pump have been replaced on my truck.
Could be the injectors 05 were known for bad injectors they had a recall for them
If it starts then shuts off, it’s usually the security system.I recommend doing a deep flush to your ecu then start fresh from there
lets compare 2004 lariat and 2004 whatever high end chev is........id rather drive a truck that gives me feelings, and fix it once in a while. 04 Lariat is the best imo out of 04-08. They built them cheaper starting 05
what did they do cheaper? Just curious I have a 05 lariat
@@claypetersen1430 04 and 05 same, 06.....EVERYTHING on the inside is cheaper, just doesn't feel like a real truck
I'm looking at an 08 xlt supercab.. idk man I don't like no tow controller and the truck just looks cheap
@@tomfreakingford The XLT IS a CHEAP model!! Why would you expect it to look luxurious? An XLT is a long way from being a King Ranch or a Lariat or even an FX4 for that matter. So it it’s not going to be particularly fancy or screaming “quality” and certainly won’t come with extras like a brake controller unless you order it that way. So stop beating up on Ford trucks when you’re definitely NOT comparing apples to apples!
@@johnpitre2539 xlt is not the cheapest model
I picked up one of these as my first truck I'm happy with it but it does have a problem with the torque converter so I have to completely replace it
My o5 f250 5.4 I had to remove the engine to switch out the oil pump. Oil pan had to come off to access some bolts
I had the “Phantom Menace of the Opera” recommended heavily to me after watching this. 😭🍷
You are honestly pretty spot on about them. The engine definitely is “dainty” and if you make sure to be a good owner and keep up on it then it should work fine but definitely do NOT buy a used one since you have no clue if that previous owner was stayin up on it or not.
I got my dads old 05 so luckily I know the history of it and trust it. yeah I’ve dealt with the spark plug issue once and the coil packs. Also on one road trip the passenger window went KERTHUNK and rolled itself down 😂 we had to stop at a random dealership in Vegas to get that fixed. This generation of ford trucks is meh but I love my big dumb dirty hoe all the same and I will drive her into the ground ❣️
And who’s stock modular oil pump has gone out ?!?
this generation of f150 competes with the 2007-2013 Silverado, in 2004 when this truck in this video was released the 1999-2006 Silverado generation already existed and people were comparing it to the 2004 Silverado that was old already. If Chevy released the 2007 Silverado in 2004 would have been great.
My 04 has 400k miles lol still going. Although I did rebuild the trans
Why did you rebuild the tranny?
Is there a perfect engine?
I have a 04 Lariat. It’s awesome. Some electrical issues from water damage of poor design but that’s it. Just soldering some wires back together and it’s back to the normal truck. I have been told it’s the quietest 3v ever
Please not give wrong information the problem with the spark plugs because you working with the engine cold is aluminum you have to work with the engine warm and the misfire is only water in it
My uncle has a 07 and he has been living in another country for about 25 years now and he say he is going to give it to me
I have a 08 with a 5.4L and when stepping on the gas hard the lights gets bright and a/c and guage cluster goes out till i let off the gas then all goes back to normal what is the cause
Sounds like alternator is going possibly
You need to clean all battery connections and grounds and get a new battery something is wrong in that system
Alternators commonly went bad in early ford's the 04-08 model replacement is only like 125 bucks
Amazing write up/narrative, needed this! Thanks a million!
DAMN. i just bought one
Me too.

Use very good oil, 5/30, keep it clean and you solve most problems. Get the plugs out at 60k miles.
Oil suggestions, penzoil ultra platinum, mag 1 or schaeffers.
If you can afford it use schaeffer all trans in the trans, power steering and transfer case on 4x4. It is the best going period. Hard to find but their products cannot be touched.

The plug issue isn’t really an issue as long as you follow fords tsb. You have to spray carb cleaner and work the plugs out. I’m a technician but I took mine to the Ford dealership to have them done so if there’s a problem they would have to fix it if they fuck it up.

If you brake off a plug in a 2v 4.6 you don’t now what the hell your doing or your screwing the customer
4.6L has normal plugs not the 2 piece that some of the 5.4s have. I dont see how they could break off.
Done the timing job, the engine, frame repair... I bought it to get out of an older Chevy that was nickel and diming me to death. Turns out, Ford does it worse.
my 04 4.6l F150 is fucking indistructable... 240k miles on it, runs like a swiss watch, never let me down, in the last 10 years i've owned it, i've only had to replace a radiator, a heater core hose, i had two spark plugs blow out and got helicoils put in them, and that's IT! change the oil, put gas in the mf and it just runs! oh almost forgot, at 180k i had the trans rebuilt because some sun band or some shit broke and it wouldn't go reverse anymore, but it went forward great lol, drove it like that for atleast 6 months before getting it rebuilt haha.
