Does it matter if you are using a free running lead and fixed lead?

Hi, I just started pike fishing with a bobber and just have a few questions. I will be using 5/0 circle hooks and fishing with bait in the 4 to 5 inch range and I like to have my rod in freespool in the rod holder. I'm am confused on when to set the hook when the bobber goes down in these 3 scenarios: when to set hook if fish is peeling line off and going away from you? When to set hook if fish takes bobber and comes towards you? When to set hook if fish pulls bobber down and just goes sideways? Thanks

Is the QC weight the same as the float capacity or do you go a bit less to account for the bait? Weight or bait on bottom?

I have been trying to get an answer to this... my theory is that if you are fishing with a a weight & a float the weight of the bait doesn't matter as once in the water the bait is either laying on deck or lightly suspended if you pop it up. I've been matching the QC weight with the float and it sets the bait well imo

Fixed lead on your bottom bait pike rig could be tethered if you get broken off

Run ring fits over the top swivel, he should have shown this

@@UPTHETOWN There is no run ring on the float rig. The lead is fixed and any break off relies on the lead coming off the central core bit, sliding up the line a bit, then the line coming out of the quick change slot in the lead. Not really a fish safe system.
