    I've seen comparisons with different magnetic fields detectors so I decided to post the explanation:
    ETHER is not just an inductive sniffer like some projects you can easily find online. A simple low-frequency inductive sniffer will be silent in most places that are full of sounds in the video. Such devices need to be placed close to an emitting source and will not work on a street. All they contain is a coil and a low-frequency amplifier. In comparison, ETHER has a regenerating circuit and a demodulator, making it an actual radio wave receiver, not just an amplifier of low-frequency magnetic fields. However, ETHER can perceive the low-frequency magnetic fields as well. But, honestly, if your goal is to scan objects in close proximity (0-20 centimetres), devices like Elektrosluch will work cleaner and more focused due to its narrow band and lower sensitivity. ETHER was designed to be a part of your walks in the city and may even pick up sounds in a forest or at the seashore (I have such experience). Elektrosluch was designed for using over a table full of gear. Also, ETHER can perceive the electric component of the radiation as well, capturing radiation that is far above the audio range and is much more sensitive. Therefore, it has a significantly different design, functions and implementation than a simple inductive sniffer even if in some cases their functions can overlap.

      So this device amplifies audible electrical frequencies, and demodulates FM radio bands? What frequencies beyond the audible does it capture and how does it scale these down to audible frequencies?

    • @somasynths
      @somasynths  5 років тому +11

      Yes, it does it both. But mostly AM kind of modulation, not FM. I captured even GSM transmitters (that are placed on special towers) that are in GHz range. Btw I often hear some FM distorted stations in the city in some places. It scales it down in a very simple way as it does old well known AM radio - detector-demodulator-filter. However, the HF has to have some modulation in the audio range or interfere with some other HF or be unstable and produce some low freq noise or fluctuation. Otherwise, you will not hear it.

      The best way to find out what Ether is all about is getting one. It's pretty affordable too and you'd be needing a huge modular to make something similar. I just got my V2. It took me a while to find a way and record the sound. Also, it's totally excellent as a random noise and static generator for your eurorack system, sure beats white & pink noise, we should invent a name for ether's 'color'. :)

    This device and video could easily be one of the best academic art projects if contextualized properly

    • @TheStuF
      @TheStuF 5 років тому

      it is not "could". If your opinion depends on context then say "is" instead of "could" and proceed to give example of context/explanation. Your comment, as is, may confuse others and is not good (my opinion).
      Here - "This device and video is one of the best academic art projects I have ever seen" that is what you should say, you want to add "contextualised properly" why? to look good/clever? Doesn't do that. you can just say something about context.
      If you feel I have misunderstood you, it just proves your comment needs editing :)
      Additionaly, what is an "academic art project" in your opinion? Why is it not just an "Art project"? "academic art" is a modern and made up term, meaningless.
      In fact, what this device and video is is an engineering "project" first and a marketing project secondly, of course the project involves Art as well. You call it something else, up to you. I think you need to begin your study again of "what is art". Context? I am not sure you know the meaning. Contextualized? just don't use this word :) Good luck explaining your intended meaning/purpose of your comment if you want or good luck ignoring if you choose.

      With 100% isolation, you will hear a quiet white noise that may subtly change depending on the position of your arm over the device as it capacity sensitive. In a forest, it can still receive something as there still present radio waves from radio stations, beacons and the ionosphere. I got some clear sounds on a seashore far away from civilization one day.

    So, to capture the sound, one would have to let the ETHER do it's thing while the line out is plugged into a ZOOM or something. Then, you would use the line out of the ZOOM to monitor the noises with headphones and have ZOOM record sounds you like. Once you have all the sounds you want for the day, you could use the line out of the recorder and send the saved audio into, say, a KOMA Field kit and process the sounds in that, then sample from the Field Kit into a Morphagene or other rack sampler (or DAW). I think I understand the basic connectivity of getting ETHER sounds into a recorded composition like the one at the end of the video.

    Is it "inspiried' by soviet experiments with sound from last century?

    How does it record on the go? Do you need a seperate device?

      I used ZOOM H2 recorder. ETHER is very sensitive to any kind of digital circuitry that’s in close proximity. This is why I didn’t put an SD-card recorder or something like that inside. You also have to make sure to keep other electronic devices that you carry (phone, laptop, recorder) at least 30cm/1ft away to avoid interference, but ETHER definitely works well when you walk around with a smartphone and laptop in other pockets and bags. To record ETHER, you need to use an audio cable of at least 1m/3ft in length to connect it to a device like a ZOOM recorder. Even with a long cable, ETHER can sound differently than when using headphones. To get the purest sound, headphones are required. Some sounds you can record only with the mind, sorry. But the best snapshots are kept in our heart so let it be a part of the game:)
