    I love IEW! I've been teaching it in my homeschool and our co-op for 6 years. Every year I see students go from basic or struggling writers to truly excellent writers. Not sure if you have your kids underline their dress ups but that makes correcting A LOT easier!

    As a former IEW student now heading to college, I have to say IEW is the best! I re-entered brick and mortar school last two years of high school and was above level and easily passed multiple AP courses because of it. I also got into some of the top colleges and business school in the country like Michigan Ross and Rochester. I think a lot of it was due to my ability to write really good supplemental essays which stemmed from IEW and Lost Tools of Writing 😂

    I'm an IEW fan. This curriculum is great for creative writing and yet it introduces how to handle multiple resources necessary for research papers. My neice, who is using the curriculum is young. Do the older grades include different types of writing as how to write a research paper, poetry, newspaper article, etc too? Research papers have a different focus where word preciseness, clarity, flow of thought is the priority. Supporting thesis statements, facts, logic, critical thinking, linking thoughts, generating papers with both depth and breadth, and referencing resources is emphasized. These papers require skills which need to be built. Teens going into the Sciences in college will be primarily writing these types of papers instead of the creative writing side....does IEW teach this too in the older grades?

      My younger daughter does also. Don’t hesitate to start your son on a lower level. My daughter is in 6th grade but I have her using level A. My older daughter is in 8th grade and I have her on year 1 of level B, even though you’d think she’d be in year 2 at this point. That’s what’s awesome about the program, it really doesn’t matter since all levels are covering the same formulas for quality writing. Starting a little lower will give your son confidence:)

    Thank you for this review!!
    My kids are 9.5yo("4th grade") and 11yo("5th grade"). My 11yo is Dyslexic. We currently use The Good and the Beautiful LA.
    Would this be a good solution for my 11yo?
    Would this replace our TGTB LA or would I use it just to supplement the writing part of TGTB LA?

    • @gwynethlester1421
      @gwynethlester1421 2 роки тому +1

      IEW has really helped my dyslexic teens. We tried TGTB, but it was not the best fit for our family. Both of them prefer IEW, my oldest loves the checklists and the videos. My youngest is doing one of the theme based books and likes combining history with LA, and this approach is so thorough and incremental that he knows exactly what he needs to do with little help from me! We didn’t find these things with TGTB, and nobody enjoyed their more traditional approach.
      Give it a try with the free trial. The theme based books are great if you’re on a budget or if your child has a specific interest. Good luck!

    This sounds like a great program! What ‘grade’ would you, or anyone else in comments, recommend to start this program? Next year my kids will be in 2nd and 4th. Would you recommend The zookeeper program for those grades or start on the first book in IEW for my upcoming 4th grader?

    I purchased the IEW Structure and Style course for my fourth grader a few months ago. He is going to start it in January. I noticed they offer a teacher training course on this (which is pretty pricey 😬). Would you suggest taking the teacher training course or would I be able to get by with just watching the lesson videos with my child and the teacher manual?

    • @mandy-maltz
      @mandy-maltz  2 роки тому +5

      I bought it and flipped through it. I think it's a great option for those who feel they need more preparation! I don't think it's a must-need item, but a nice thing they offer.

      I teach IEW at our homeschool co-op, which only meets once a week, time doesn't allow for the students to watch the video. So I watch the video, then I teach the class. You could do the same with your children, and use the Teacher book.

    • @OurHOMEschoolPlan

      It’s not all video based. They have theme based books that are teacher led. So they have both.

    Hey, thanks for this video. I have been looking into IEW for my kiddos. Can you help me out by answering my questions and some advice...
    1. How long does it typically take for them to complete a lesson?
    2. Did you use Fix It Grammar along with it?
    3. Is this a stand alone? parent intensive? Easy to grasp?
    My sons are twins 8s (public to 1st) and 13y (public to 5th and is spelling and reading well below where he should be). I am considering using IEW for all three and starting at lvl A yr 1. I am just not sure if this would be above their heads and/or could pass as their language arts until we at least get rolling and then maybe add in Fix It. Sorry just currently stuck on LA 🤦‍♀️

      These are really good questions. Your best route in my opinion is to call IEW and speak to someone. You know your kids best. And there are free sample lessons for Structure and Style as well as Fix it grammar.
      There are options for all ages: K-12

    You mentioned that you do IEW with Abeka and Night Zookeeper- I’m curious how you do all three programs together and does it ever feel like too much? Would be helpful to see a video on this (how to combine /supplement curriculum) ! 😊 Thank you and God bless!

    • @mandy-maltz
      @mandy-maltz  2 роки тому +3

      Hi Katie! NZK is just a supplement, not daily curriculum. For IEW we use them for composition/writing. Abeka is grammar. So we can marry those two together, so long as we take out the Abeka writing assignments :)

    I want to switch to this writing curriculum for the next year . Is this curriculum what you use for writing and literature or do you do completely something separate for literature?
    Our literature program that we use , Mosdos Press, takes a lot of time, so I’m wondering if this IEW program would be enough for writing and literature

      You will need reading or phonics and possibly poetry, but then yes, it would be a full language curriculum.

    Thank you for the video. I am looking into IEW for my oldest 2 kids. Please is the structure & style writing plus the fix it grammar that comes with it sufficient for language arts? Or would you suggest them doing a separate language arts program in addition to writing/grammar?

    • @mandy-maltz
      @mandy-maltz  2 роки тому +1

      With this package, you’d only need to add spelling and phonics/reading to complete most language arts programs. This would take care of your composition and grammar.

    I watched this whole video and I know I'm missing something - is this a full ELA course - grammar and spelling too, or just writing? What would be a good companion with it to complete the ELA requirements? One thing that's hard is slamming my kids with three different things they have to do every day just to fulfill ELA requirements in my state.

    Thank you for this video, I have literally only come across SSS today, and as you do, search for the reviews, so to find this is so helpful. What would you suggest? I have a 6th grader and an eighth grader. We have not done writing and composition, I have always let them skip over those parts in our current material as it is one of my weaknesses.
    I'm trying to figure out do I start them both on level A or would that be too 'young' for my oldest in particular?

    Would you recommend starting at level C with a child that is going into 9th grade, writes alright, but isn’t a strong writer?
    I’ve been seriously considering IEW for my four kids next year, but I just can’t decide where I really should start with them. My oldest daughter is nearly 13 and “going into” 8th grade in the fall. She’s a very reluctant writer, and struggles immensely with writing. Would you recommend starting at level A even though you would typically do level B?
    My youngest two are almost 8 and 11 (will be going into 3rd and 6th grade), and I don’t know if it would be too soon to start level A with my youngest, and if level A would be alright to start my youngest son on as well…. 😕

      I might be to late, but I started level A year one with my struggling 14 year old and 12 year old. We’re in the early stages but it’s working perfect for them.
