I used to have a spinning rod made out of a fly rod blank. And it was a kick ass blast. But I made it for panfish. Once you have used your flypole as a spinning rod you may not go back to a real spinning rod.
I just ordered a cheap fly rod to try this with a little ultralight spinning reel I have leftover from a broken rod. Your video inspired me lol
If you still have the old broken rod, take the 2 stripper guides (closest to the reel) and put them on the fly rod. It will cast much better. It’s pretty easy to cut out the guides and swap them.
Still cheaper and imo better then buying one of them overpriced “ultra light” crap they sell out there.
I love trying off-the-wall stuff like that. I have imagined trying it, but haven't ever done it; I will now.
We were doing this back in the mid 80s ( yeah, I’m an old bastard) to pendulum swing lighter spinners for steelhead. Then gradually built spinning rods on fly rod blanks. 9’-10’ spinning rods were not common back in the day, so one had to think outside the box
I like it!
I have using that for about 15 years. It is so great fun. Makes catching fish more fun. Going luck.
I used to do the same when I was a kid in the late 60s for walleyes in northern Minnesota. PB 60lb. Carp
The next time you use this set up, instead of snapping the cast try lobbing it. I think the soft tip of a fly rod causes it to rebound and pull back on the line still trying to go out. If you lob it with a full horizontal follow through I believe you will get at least 25% more distance. Also casting with more line off the tip will have a pendulum effect used by distance casters from the UK. Tight lines always.
When I was a kid my dad and I did a back packing trip in the high Uinta’s and our cheaper telescoping spin rod broke so threw the spinning reel on our fly rod sense we only had one of each and it worked great!
My buddy
Got a set up like that at a swopmeat/fleemarket
And it had such a good feel
Wish there was some type of hybrid of sort out there
I have been using a 8 1/2 ft. Medium action spinning rod for years for trout. Casts light line beautifully and far. The rod length and action allows you to handle really large fish . MPB is a 16lb. Cutthroat/Rainbow cross on 4lb. Line. A lot of fun!
Years ago I knew of people doing similar setups to drift nymphs and egg imitations .
This is how I use my fly rod . I only use it with panfish, the fly rod seems to be a bit more sensitive to the light bites…
I bought a Shakespeare “spin fly” rod at a flea market. It’s a fiberglass rod made in the 60s. The reel seat is just sliding rings. You can mount a fly reel at the base or spin reel in the mid handle. Main problem is it sucks as a fly rod-doesn’t cast worth poop.
I used to work in Alaska I've run my fly rod on a downrigger, it was a total blast and I've also done ultralight 4 and 1/2 ft pole on a downrigger the micro reel about 25 yd of line is all it held total freaking blast and the looks I got were the best
I like a fly reel on a spin rod combo. 5.5' Eagle Claw Crafted Glass, #3 fly line. A short fly rod is less work.
I have been fishing with a set up like that for over 40 years . I still use the combo . A 5/6 weight two piece 8 fooot 6 inch , two piece rod with a 1000 Daiwa Regal 5i reel . I have used extensively in Southern Africa including Two trips to Kariba , two trips to the Upper Zambezi and a trip to The Chobe river in Botswana . I fished for everything including Tigerfish of which I landed many on the combo . I still use the same rod and reel after moving to the UK . So it will work anywhere you go to fish and for many species .
Same I use a fly rod with a spinning reel size 1000 everyone thinks it’s stupid but I love it I can euro nymph with it as well by using my hand to keep the line tight like “euro nymphing” everyone thinks it’s stupid but it works lol and don’t feel like spending the money on a fly reel 😂
I’ve got a little okumo on a light weight 8 foot fly rod and it’s the best trout rod I’ve ever had and I now have a love for micro lures
Wicked Brownies on the Frankenrod..
After taping a sinning reel onto an old 4wt fibreglass rod,I sawed the handle off, turned it round and now fish it with a spinning reel for dry fly fishing . I tie a 10ft floating trout polyleader to end of mainline and use it for dry fly fishing . It casts the polyleader (2 grammes) really nicely and the forward energy of the cast and weight of the polyleader pulls enough line off the reel to easily make 25-30ft casts without all the heave ho of false casting ...
We used to fish before school, and started doing this so not to have to wade. Been doing it ever since. Especially for small streams. Almost like back trolling. Current setup is an 111/2 ft 5 wt nymph rod with a Vanford 1000 series. In fly/ lure only sections, F-3 Flatfish. The fly purists hate it. But who cares about them. Also, replacing the 2 lowest guides fixes the casting. Like a trout noodle rod.
Love the vids man. Fellow Mainah heya. I'm just starting to get out this year and caught a couple stockers so far. Going to take a trip up around the Andro/Wild river in about a months time. Love going out that way and hitting the white mountain areas etc. Tight lines brotha!
You have created a monster.
Had an uncle with a classic Eagle Claw Spin/Fly rod. The handle flipped around to switch from fly to spin. Ultra light duty rod. Was fun to use as a crappie would be a huge fight.
People have been doing this for quite a long time. Recently I've seen a lot of people in various social medias asking about it, seems like it suddenly piqued everyone's interest. I'm going to do it for this next season. I'm thinking it'll be great for kayak use, where the long butts on most spinning rods can kind of get in the way.
Next you should try out a fly reel on an ice jigging rod. I've always thought that would work well but haven't tried it yet.
St Croix makes an 8' Avid with a similar action.
Nice video... I do this a lot and I thought I might be weird... so I googled and it's nice to find I'm not the only weird one 🙂 I travel and there are places where I can only fly fish, places where I can only float fish and places where I like to spin with mepps and ondex, but I don't want to carry two or three rods... so I just take a 5 or 7 wt fly rod, a fly reel and a cute little fixed spool reel... Then I can do everything with one rod... The trouble is that I like the feel of playing fish on the fly rods so much... I now do this even when I'm at home and I have 5 or 6 nice spinning rods and float rods that don't get out much anymore! Another weird thing I like to do is fishing spinners with a float rod and a centre pin reel... A bit bizarre and pointless, but a great way to practice making very long wallis casts 🙂
Tried it with ultra light reel on a 5wt. Couldn’t get it to cast very far at all. Think your right about the 7wt minimum. Much better results than I got.
Oh yeah!
I like the idea!!
My favorite set up is ass backwards of that
Right I’ve seen/used it! Haha
Live in central PA. Use this set up for Mt streams
I love my max catch nymph rod my only complaint is where the reel get held on it just feels kinda crappy I actually have to do the electrical tape thing just to make it feel tight
I read a article in the Maine Sportsman that had a comment from a fisheries biologist. They claimed to not clip fins any more but we all know the tank walls are concrete and it tends to damage the fins before they are stocked.
They certainly do. I fished a pond a few weeks back. Was catching clipped splake.
Cool video man! Catch a brown with a crankbait that looks like a brown haha. Funny how trout would eat their own. I'm gonna break the norm next year fly fishing for bass lol.
That's actually a fairly old set up here in the Southern Appalachians. I remember seeing old timers 40 or more years ago with this set up. I've tried it myself numerous times. Actually works well in smaller streams
Im thinking about, fly fishing line and reel in a spinning rod
Pretty ones!!
Love it!!! 😎😎😎😎😎
use one hand for casting the rod will load it self
You sound and look like matt from bleepnjeep. Great video
I’m tony uk was just about to order a spinning rod from Amazon for fishing the canals for bream perch or pike but remembered I have a spinning rod which I’ve never used so I googled the question and your video answered my question hahaha 😂you saved me£40 thanks bruv
Has anyone got a link to his video of the maxcatch extreme review?
By the way alot of us run spinning reels on flyrods for crappie in south carolina
💯 excellent
2 Zip ties would work for holding reel down !
nice lol - this is a good video
Thank ya!
😂😂😂l👀 like a lot of 😂😂😂awesome clip
Change the eyes on the rod,it will cast better.
Be careful using a rod with such a soft tip casting lures. I hit myself in the back of the head with a mepps spinner once. Broke off one of the trebles in the back of my head.
My kinda imagination vdo 🤔😁
It's like you're reading my mind with these ideas sometimes. Keep doing stupid stuff.
