The pursuit of economic growth has been the cornerstone of Western economic policy for decades. However, the aftermath of the Coronavirus Pandemic and the threat of climate change has led to ever-increasing calls for change. Advocates for economic growth argue that it rewards the hardworking and raises standards of living, yet other rebuke 'trickle-down economics' as dysfunctional and unfair; in the midst of these discussions, should the state primarily focus on economic equality or should growth remain its ultimate goal?
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

Put equality before prosperity and you'll get neither. Put prosperity before equality and you should get a fair measure of both.

There are several real-world supporting examples of how prioritizing economic equality can contribute to economic growth:
    1. Nordic Countries: The Nordic countries, such as Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, have some of the highest levels of economic equality in the world. Despite this, they also have some of the highest levels of economic growth and prosperity. This is due in part to their emphasis on investing in social programs, such as education and healthcare, which help to create a skilled workforce and increase productivity.
    2. Germany: Germany is another example of a country that prioritizes economic equality, through its strong welfare state and emphasis on social programs. Despite this, it is also one of the strongest economies in the world, with a high level of innovation and productivity.
    3. The United States: While the United States has historically focused more on economic growth than economic equality, there are examples of how greater equality can contribute to growth. For example, during the post-World War II era, the United States experienced a period of high economic growth and prosperity, which was due in part to its emphasis on social programs and the creation of a strong middle class.
    4. Costa Rica: Costa Rica is a smaller country that has prioritized economic equality through its emphasis on social programs and environmental sustainability. Despite its small size, it has experienced strong economic growth over the past few decades, due in part to its emphasis on education and healthcare.
In conclusion, prioritizing economic equality can contribute to economic growth and prosperity, and that the two goals are not necessarily mutually exclusive. By investing in social programs, education, and healthcare, countries can create a more inclusive and sustainable economy that benefits everyone.

The problem with this debate is that the motion is quite clearly a false dichotomy.
The debate would be better served if the motion suggested economic equality should be prioritised more or less than it is currently, rather than implying that by their nature growth and equality are conflicting principles.

This person doesn't understand what priority means. Prioritizing something doesn't mean you let go of everything else. We are capable of doing two things at a time.
I don't know but this one was sort of disgusting to hear

Yes we should be prioritising equality of opportunity > equality of outcome.

@@moneymayhem2000 as long as some kind of equality is being sought after that will be better than this bullshit trickle down economics stuff.

He's saying if you prioritize growth you'll also get equality as a by-product. Only rich countries can afford to spend resources on welfare and charity.
The most unequal countries in the world are often ones whose governments claimed to be for equality.

@@crown9413 Quite. The argument is not that equality is wrong. The argument is that state-enforced equality almost always comes at an excessive price in both freedom and prosperity.
