Taking the Bellanca Super Viking Over the Mountains to Jackson

- I grab a couple of the boys and we head out over the Rocky Mountains for a quick day trip in the Bellanca Super Viking to Jackson and Grand Teton National Park. Despite a high density altitude and trouble activating a flight plan we had great flights!

That was a great video, Mark! That is some beautiful land out there; unique flying for sure, although it looked a little rough on the way out!
Thanks! Come visit and we will fly around. FYI I passed my commercial check ride today 😁
The kid was more interested in their phone than the amazing scenery around him. Sad.
In their defense they’ve done this several times so it’s not quite as spectacular now.
He was interactive on the trip home.
A great video and some serious flying. Good Job... Enjoy the Viking, I owned my 79 for 20 years. One of the best general aviation choices available. Soon the boys will become a bigger part of flight when they realize the bragging rights to their friends. A retired 747 driver and ex Navy pilot......
I have really enjoyed owning it!
Sweet airplane! I love the craftsmanship that was and is each Bellanca. They are the pinnacle of function, practicality and art!
Nice airplane. The super viking is a gorgeous flying machine. Love the idea of wooden wings.
I agree!
Nice job!
6-23-23: Any new videos? I have enjoyed watching. Love the Viking!!! 👍🏻
Very good conversation family, crystal sons, take off the movil 😢😢😢
The Viking has always fascinated me, as have the Tetons! I flew there with my brother in April. Excellent video!
Both are great! Thanks for watching.
Nice flight.....
Man you got some great scenery out that way!!!
Parr 4 the Course come on out anytime and I show you some of it 😉

I have you guys as a waypoint in ForeFlight if we get out that way!!
That was a good dang day, good dang content, plane, flying and quality time with the boys. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed!
Nice flyin' captain. Great advice on the fluffy cow's as well
Thanks for coming along!
Such a gorgeous plane. 👍 One of my favorites.
I have really come to love it!
@@wyflyguy114 If I ever get a 4 seater, low wing, complex airplane, this one will be at the very top of my list. I love the back story on Bellanca too. Very cool company and love the old-way craftsmanship.
The rightseat kid seems to enjoy his phone more than the flight....
They fly a lot and its not as exciting for them as it once was. This is pretty typical when I fly with them. A few 10 hr trips to Florida will do that I guess.
@@wyflyguy114 Ask him to hold a heading.
What a great video! Loved the day excursion with the boys to do some fishing. LOVE IT! I've got my eyes on a Bellanca 17-30A Super Viking right now that I really like. Just never flown one and don't know much about them. But, you're video got my interest piqued!
They are great planes. Just spend the money to get a good one rather than a cheap one.
Nice video brother!
Thanks!
I enjoy watching & listening
I’m glad to hear that!
This is just me in my Viking, but if I need flaps to take off, I'm going to raise my gear before I raise my flaps.
Honestly, these days I rarely use flaps.
Great video. I had a 1969 viking, Felt better than any other plane I have flown including 5 V-Tail Bonanzas and an A36. I may buy another one I found for sale.
It's a great plane!
Last time I was in Jackson Hole was in 1982 on my 1979 Goldwing full dressed. I'd left Portland north through Canada to Jasper in Banf National park. South through Lake Louise, over over the the Continental Ride to the Sun, into Yellow Stone, Jackson Hole, up over Rocky Mr. National Park, Dinosaur National Park to Salt Lake, up to Craters of the Moon, Saw Tooth National Park to Boise and home. 4200 miles if i remember right. Not a single issue with the bike, in fact I never did have any problems with that bike. Brings back a lot of great memories.
Jackson is a different place entirely these days.
Your kid is just watching videos on his phone lol. I just can't
Maybe the first couple times they were impressed but by this trip it was same old…
Great video! Was this plane ever registered to an owner from Texas?
My very favorite airplane of all times. It is the only airplane I have flown that had perfect control harmony and balance. It feels like you would imagine an airplane should feel.
I would say they are the most undervalued plane out there. If more people knew how amazing they are, they would cost 2x as much.
@@wyflyguy114 It is the thought of a wood wing that scares off the aviation ignorant. Wood is Gods composite , kept dry it will last forever and there is no stress life limit. The only issues I know of were drains plugged up by bugs and improper inspection. If I could I would by one in a New York second.
You are right on about the control feel and balance harmony of the Viking I have owned 6 Bonanzas, they are also great but the feel of a Bellanca is just plain awesome. I had a 69 and may buy another as I just sold my Comanche 250. Nice roomy cockpit but doesn't match the feel of either a Bonanza or the Viking.
Nice video guys... what year is your Bellanca Super viking? I am looking at a 1974 version with 2800 TT and 400 since overhaul. In mint shape... Just wondering what you would think it's worth? Trying to make a decision between the Bellanca and the D62... Hmmmm price was no object. Kidding.. But I flew a Bellanca back in the late 70s along with our old J-3 and a Cherokee 140. The Bellanca is faster, lighter and softer flying. Just give me a number you think I should pay for a low hours, great interior, all original nav w auto. Trying to get my wife to learn to fly.... I saw one other of your videos so far. You do a nice job. I'm sure the boys have learned to fly by now, eh? I started at 4-5 years old. Soloed at 12, when I took the plane without permission, the J-3. We had our own runway at the farm and dad was on a biz trip. Thought I'd get away with it. Instead I got a beating every day for two weeks. More to let me know I could have killed myself. Flew for over 30 years then life took over. Now at 68 I'm getting back to it. How much is a 74 BSV worth? Thanks !
Really enjoyed the vid, looking forward to more flying out West for sure. Thinking I might want a super viking, hows the leg room? I'm 6'7"
I’ve had a guy that is like 6’3 in it and he was fine but you won’t get anyone in the back behind you. Leaning the seat back seems to work just fine for the taller folks. Thanks for watching!
Awesome. As a Comanche 250 owner, I still fantasize about owning a Viking. I don’t know why...
Definitely don’t watch the upcoming video of my new interior then 😉. All kidding aside I really love the plane. It checked all the boxed I needed for my first plane. I’m hoping to keep it when I move up to a Malibu.
Beautiful, I’m currently working on getting my license and already looking into getting my first plane. Is there something I should consider about this plane as far as maintenance? Loved the video!
I wouldn’t say there’s anything unusual. The big thing is to keep them hangared. I would also make sure and take it to somebody that specializes in this aircraft for annual. Regular maintenance can be performed by a local shop but the guys that know these planes are best suited to inspect them for long-term issues.
im a cessna fan but the viking has always been a favorite.
I trained in Cessna’s and the Viking is a rocket ship compared to the 172 and 182. The response rate is so much nicer in it as well. I wish I could buy a 6 seat Viking.
@@wyflyguy114 i agree, the only cessna that is comparable in handing is the now defunkt cessna 240 corvalis, a very responsive aircraft from my experience.
where did you guys fly out of?
Powell WY
How tall are you? I’m looking into these and wondering the room. I’m 6’4” 250.
5’8” but I know many are taller that own them. I have my seat fairly far forward.
@@wyflyguy114 damn I need to get in one. I’ve only been in an Archer and Bonanza I’ve flown. Looking for something with a 6 banger with some room.
Hey i was interested in buying a super viking. Some people are telling me not to buy it because of maintenance, and some are saying i would need a perfect temp hanger. Is that true?
I would say no to both. Maintenance on any plane can be expensive. They should be hungered but there is no need to have it climate controlled. There are several of these planes all across the country including where I now live in Florida.
@@wyflyguy114 thank you i do appreciate it. I’m very nervous and excited at the same time. I love your videos. Your videos is one of the reasons why i want one. Can’t wait to watch your next one.
Find my gopro wont help much if the wing camera comes off. Nice scenery.
Are you talking about some sort of an app to find it?
Yeah in the go pro app it bluetooths to the camera and makes it beep so you can find it.
Side note put it on your phone not the tablet thats not always with you. #askmehowiknow
Your 14 year-old can solo in less than 2 years!
We will see if he is interested in flying.
What happened to you front gear doors?
This model did not have any front doors. In fact the wheel does not tuck up inside cowling fully. I think on some of the later models they change this but I’m not sure when.
@@wyflyguy114 mine is a 1976 17 30A, what is yours, it has landing lights that I have not seen.
Mine is a 73 and had the lights relocated from the wings to the gear farings at some point.
It is a 17-31a
Nice video - I fly 260 C with IO470. Love it’s handling. Have struggles with hydraulic issues.
Bison. Not buffalo.
Noted.
@@wyflyguy114my neighbor has about 500 and they call them bison all the time and buffalo. I just remember it being a buffalo nickel not a bison. The correct technical name is North American bison.
Gear up first! Not flaps
Thanks!
