    Hey guys, Pilot of the aircraft in this video. I’ve been reading the comments so you should all know I provided Mike this info based on the performance this specific aircraft. 135KIAS is slow for the Mooney but unfortunately that’s what this guy gets at 24 squared. You guys are leading me to believe that somethings up and I will get it checked immediately.
    This is a club aircraft that is old and has had 3 no gear landings. It has a Johnson bar and had a few hot cylinders,
    GPH is usually 12.
    Let me know if there is anything else I can address,
    Thank you all for your feedback !

    I’ve been flying a Mooney M20J for over 10 years. Been all over US, Canada, Caribbean. No problem seating 4 adults. It’s at the trade off of fuel but it does not cause CG issues. And as for 135 knots indicated, whip out your E6B and you’ll see that this is around 150+ knots true airspeed above 6000ft.

    Mike, I enjoy your channel and being a Mooney owner myself I was glad you made a review on the J. I think you need to do a little more research on the planes you're presenting though and it's true for other reviews you've made in the past. It could have been nice to do a small presentation of all M20 models. The Johnson bar you are talking about I think was last seen on the E model. Your numbers on cruise speed and burn rate are all over the place. In case of doubt just present what the POH says. We never work with indicated airspeed, specially when flying at 8-9k feet, using true airspeed makes a huge difference. Not only is 135 kias super low for a J, it's also not accurate. A good J will burn about 10 gph at 150 true. Last thing on the leg space, the seats were all the way back and you had at least another 12" to go before touching the rudder pedals. 4 adults is easy in an M20. I wouldn't say we could spend 5 hours back there but it's far from a 2 seater like you presented. The front seats are sliding as far back as they are to give an easy way in and out for the pilot and co-pilot.

      My sentiment exactly this interview really undercuts the actual capability of this platform. I’ve had up to 6”3 in my backseat for 10 hours without a complaint and that’s in the short body! They’re so capable and fast for the fuel being burned.

    • @NerdKid72
      @NerdKid72 13 днів тому

      Yes because you own an F model (mid length). Most people looking into a more economical or "quicker" or cheaper 4 seater, however you translate those terms into aviation, look towards the C/E model which is 10" shorter in rear legroom. Thats huge for people over 6 foot. I'm 6'2" 170lbs and I could not sit behind myself in a mooney c/e model I have tried.

  • @rlkinser
    @rlkinser 2 роки тому +10

    The seat is never all the way unless you're like 7'2". The rudder pedals are far forward, which means that you sit closer to the yoke than you do in other airplanes. The flight controls also have shorter throws than cable driven systems, so the yoke never has to move that much.

  • @loupitou06fl
    @loupitou06fl 2 роки тому +9

    I concur with all the comments below, the cabin is as spacious as similar GA 4 seaters (cherokee, warrior, 172), what is different is in a mooney the legs goes all the way to the firewall and you sit much closer to the panel - F1 style. Also the reason why the passenger rudder pedals are different than the pilot (left seat) is because only the pilot side has brake controls - passenger side (right) is only rudder/front wheel

    I've been waiting to see a Mooney on the channel from it started. When I got my Mooney M20C last year, mojo was the first person I hit up hoping to get it reviewed. Heart broken to see this Mooney on the channel and not mines,, but glad a Mooney got on to represent. I love the J model but also love the Johnson bar in my M20C, which reduces the annual cost. My Mooney has all the J model upgrade, even a 3 bladed prop, speed brakes and all the bells and whistles, but no electric landing gear. Ohh, another thing, the J models have electric landing gears, not Johnson bar.

  • @EJWash57
    @EJWash57 2 роки тому +6

    SOME Mooney models have the Johnson Bar landing gear system. The M20J reviewed here has electric-driven landing gear. The landing gear switch, shaped like a miniature white tire, just to the left of the radio rack is the give-away. Horizontal stabilizer trim: Yes, the entire empennage moves to provide pitch trim. Yes, the rudder moves (pivots) with it - by default. The rudder DOES NOT displace to the left or right when the horizontal stabilizer moves.

    Thank you for the review. I’ve flown lots of aircraft and the M20 is by far my favorite plane to fly. The pushrods give it a solid feel and it is a great and stable IFR platform. Go Mooney!! You should take it out and fly it and you’ll see why Mooneys are such great aircraft. I regularly see 155 kts TAS on 11 gph in my M20J - It will show 135ish indicated but TAS is of course higher as you go up.

    Love the channel and follow regularly. A bit disappointed how inaccurate the info was on this one though. Lots of variation in the M20’s, very different as opposed to the subtle differences between Cessna 172 variants as an example. I own an M20K - basically same fuselage as the M20J you showed here (with electric landing gear - no Johnson bar 🤦🏼‍♂️) but a continental 210 HP turbocharged 6-cylinder engine. I cruise around 165 true AS around 13-19,000 ft and burn 10.2-11.5 gph at cruise. Basically get 20 miles/gal across the ground. I’m 6”1’ and have to put the seat 1/2 way in to reach the pedals, tons of leg room. Easily fly with 3 full size guys as passengers, just can’t go more than about 500 miles with half fuel (73 gal usable fuel). Thanks for showcasing a Mooney!

    • @skydvrboy
      @skydvrboy 2 роки тому +4

      Where did you get the idea that 24 squared is a good power setting for this plane? Operation of a Mooney is simple. All three knobs forward on take-off. Lean as you climb. When reaching cruise altitude (7500 - 12500), dial the prop back to 25 and lean until you’re LOP, and close your cowl flaps. For descent, push the nose down and keep adjusting trim for 500 FPM. The only time the throttle is reduced is when you're ready to land.

The pilot position in this aircraft has toe brakes therefore the big foot pad, the passenger side only has rudder control why the small T bar pedals. I can see from other comments that you corrected yourself on the Mooney M20J 201 to be max speed 201 mph, and as stated correctly this was more marketing than truth. Mooney Aircraft not only look the best on the ramp, they have also retained their styling. This airplane is 40 years old and still looks great with its impressive lines and build quality. This one is in particularly great condition. I think that most 4 seater singles aren't true 4 seaters when it comes to long distance trips as baggage, fuel, range, take off weight, landing weight and other factors come into consideration for a safe flight.

Heck I have the short body M20C and have had four people in it, yes back is minimal leg room but it worked even on 3.5 hour flight. These longer body versions have even more room. Your opinion and numbers on the M20J are very wrong. For the Back seat space, move the seats to the flying position and there will be a lot of space back there. For the speed, I get 150kts at under 9 GPH of TAS on LOP. The J model is an amazing and very eficient flying machine.

      It’s called a ground power socket….
      It is protected from reverse polarity using the third prong and a relay… making it a challenge to use to charge the battery.
      Often, a BatteryMinder (charger) is wired through the same door, just for convenience and to hide the plug…
      The purpose for the ground power socket is solely for jump starting. With modern battery technology, and pre-heaters, there is hardly a use case for it…
      Some people will use the plug when doing avionics database updates…
      It’s there to be used if and when when you need it…

    Hello Mike. I do not concur with a lot of the information you have put out there on the Mooney M20J.
    With regards to seating you can easily fit 4 adults. The seats were back for egress and access. When getting in it is the pilot first. He pulls the seat forward and adjusts accordingly. Then the pilot moves the Co Pilot seat forward and tilts the backrest forward for rear passengers to gain access. Lastly the Co Pilot who will adjust his seat for his and the rear passenger comfort. When egress this is done in reverse.
    Clearly Mike you have never flown a Mooney? I own a M20K. If I had to choose between a Sling 4 and a Mooney M20K 🤔🤔. Go fly one Mike and you tell me bang for buck 🤔🤔

    All aircraft are subject to CG limitations, but these are some of the least sensitive. As long as you stay under gross weight it’s nearly impossible to be out of CG limits.
    In mine, to exceed forward limits, I have to have the back seats empty, the luggage compartment and hat rack empty, and a 300+ lb person in the front with me. Oh, and I have to have full fuel.
    To exceed aft limits, the hat rack and luggage compartment must be maxed out, the back seats need 400+ lbs., the front seat empty, and less than 15 gallons of fuel.
    Don’t let this out, but I don’t even check CG just Max gross. I’d have to try to get it out of CG.

      I’m 6’5” as well and have several hundred hours in M20Js. As many others have noted, the front seats are all the way back in this video. It makes it easier to get into the front seats, but even at 6’5” you can’t fly with the seats in the position shown here. Once moved up to where the rudder pedals can properly be operated, there is enough leg room in the back. I loved flying the M20J, and found it quite comfortable. You should go look at one and try it on yourself.

    M20J…. Goes 201mph (max cruise) using 200hp burning 10gph (typical cruise)… The M20 line is comprised of various models… A, B, C, D, E, F, G, J, K, L, M, R, S, TN, U, & V…. Nice presentation Mojo Mike…. U & V both got an extra door on the pilot side. The engine monitor is a modern version made by JPI often a JPI900 providing primary information…. The cabin is actually wider than most single engine airplanes… it is a bit short on head room as you sit near the floor, sports car style…. The M20J is a mid length Mooney, it has plenty of space for four standard sized people…. For more space, the Long Bodies are the plane for you… 310hp, easy to cruise at 175kts and go 900nm non-stop…. Mooneys are known for speed, and efficiency… great long X-country plane…. For going faster, consider the turbo models… 😃 - a -

    My first exposure to the Mooney was from playing the Microsoft flight simulator . After getting my PPL, I was also thinking about buying the Mooney but I discovered the company went belly up. Mooney is known to be a fast airplane because of the retractable gear. With the company no longer in business, getting spare parts will be even harder than before. There are other fast airplanes that don’t have retract and they are more comfortable such as the Cirrus.

    Hi, nice videos mostly. I did want to comment on the this video since I own a Mooney. Some of the info I think you are giving is a little too generalized. There is a lot more to the different Mooney models. Like the one you are doing is a "J" and has more room and different performance specs than the "C/E" models...which it seems like you're describing mostly. Once again just wanted to get that out there. Thanks

    I have decided that I am getting my private pilot's license this year! Or, I'll at least I'll get started this year--freaking freezing right now. I had envisioned that I would eventually be getting a Mooney because they are economical for how fast they are, they look great, in my opinion, and they have retracts. But, unfortunately, as I have been researching planes, I discovered that most affordable GA planes, including Mooneys, are not allowed to do even the most basic of aerobatic maneuvers. Was a huge bummer because I really had my heart set on a Mooney. Now looking at the Beechcraft F33a bonanza, and it's so much more expensive . . . T__T

    What a stupid way to show the rear seat leg space by pushing the front seat all the way back and you had to pull it a good 13 to 15inch front in order to reach the rudder pedals. Stop stereotyping on the myth that mooneys are small tight..its way better and more value for money than your plasticky ricer sling Tsi... But mooneys have wider cabin than bonanza and rear seat space is NOT bad at all behind a 5'10 pilot in front. What you said is like "rolling down all the windows in a car in winter and complaining the car is cold and drafty"

  • @kjackles

    You need to spend some time with someone that knows Mooneys. There are many incorrect statements in is video. There are many variants of M20s (>10) with 3 different fuselage lengths and several different engine choices. Manual gear went away in 1969 (unfortunately). You should sit in the front seat, adjusted it and then look at rear seat leg room. There is plenty of rear seat leg room in a mid length body (like the one your featuring). You get an 8 on enthusiasm but a 3 on content. This failed video to showcase that actual pros and cons of the make.

    Then you say it is a 135 kt aircraft when 135 myst indicated = 150 + TAS all day long at any reasonable cruise altitude greater than 6,000 ft.
    When M20J front seats are moved forward to flying locations the back seats fit full sized adults just fine and it is a true 4 normal sized adults aircraft. When you claim a cg problem when loaded do real sample cg calculations, you were flat wrong. I have enjoyed many of your videos. Your credibility is yours to build or tear down.

      Some people won’t like the layout of sitting near the floor…. Unfortunately, This is where a good part of the speed and efficiency is derived…. The rest comes from the laminar flow wing….
