- Ten years after the Costa Concordia ran aground off the tiny Italian island of Giglio, survivors are sharing new details of one of the worst maritime disasters of this century. "It's the feeling of panic, this is what's carried through over the ten years and it's just as strong now," one passenger tells NBC’s Kelly Cobiella.

It’s been 10 years? Wow. I remember watching this when it happened and I remember seeing all the chaos
When they say time flies they're not kidding
@@mod91Kauai I know. I was 9 then but I remember it was all over the news. It's still such a sad thing that happened that changed sailing forever. RIP to those 33!!
Same
Same I was almost 10 at the time
I was in the 6th grade when it happened! Hard to imagine it’s been that long since then
I was sailing aboard Disney Fantasy a few months after Costa Concordia wrecked. Me and some fellow passengers and even crew talked about the incident during our voyage. A crew member was telling me what all was being changed aboard Disney’s ships and it’s crazy how something bad has to happen in order for there to be change. Rest In Peace to the 32 men, women, and children who lost their lives that night.

Amen, my dad says that this 3 way intersection has always been a bit dangerous, especially at night, but figures they will only add traffic lights when some big accidents happen

ultimately the problem wasn’t the lifeboats, the life jackets, the drills etc. It was the hubris and incompetence of that vile captain who fled the ship like a coward and left his passengers to die
They forgot to mention that the captain didn’t order the evacuation until way late. Everyone could have been saved if they evacuated right away.
So
Oh but don’t forget, he evacuated himself and took off in a life boat! He was ordered to go. Ack by the commander and didn’t. He’s got jail time, rightly so.
@@jenniferbond7073 well life was lost that should be homicide
It's a sad and tragic reminder that modern cruise ships can too be scary and traumatizing. I remember seeing it on the news and watching multiple documentaries like brightspark's video on the Concordia.
The caption said he tripped and fell straight into a lifeboat. How about that for a man in charge.
What? The captain abandoned ship? I'm so embarrassed for him.
The phone call between the coast guard officer telling him to Stay on board.

The captain was one of the first men to abandon ship....a great shame.
I mean I would too💀
@@bluelagoon1875 wtf does that have to do with the CC and the captain leaving the boat first???
I just don’t understand how this caption got 16 years for killing 32 people but the truck driver got 110 years for 4 people.

“If we survive this our marriage would have to survive forever” - love this!!
I’m very glad that Ian and Janice survived the tragedy of the Costa Concordia
I was in college taking up Hospitality when this happened. It became a talking point during one of our classes about transportation safety.
you went to college for hospitality? hahahahahhahahahahha
@spence right, and people want their student loan debt to be erased lol
As a cruise ship employee, 16 yrs @ sea, (NOT FROM COSTA!!!) , I can not believe how the whole incident went down! I’m glad that the Capt. ‘got what he deserved’!
Such an embarrassment to the cruise industry! 😡
An industry crying out for A LOT more embarrassment!
The captain was a coward for disembarking the ship before everyone got off. The fact the the Italian CG was yelling at him to get back on really says something...
What a horror it would've had been there when I already got severe anxiety. Rest in peace to all the victims.
After being on many cruises, with other companies, and knowing the enormous size of these ships, it is so hard to even think about something like this happening. Such a sad, scary and terrifying situation that was 1 million percent unavoidable. RIP
You mean avoidable right? Because had the captain done the right thing this wouldn't have happened!
Thinking the ship is literally too big to sink is also the mindset people had with the Titanic….
Imagine being so spineless that you put your own life before those of the innocent souls you’ve condemned to death with your own incompetence.
Captains know the rule. You remain on the vessel until all passengers and crew have disembarked, even if it means going down with your ship. I hope to never fall victim to ineptitude and cowardice on such an immense scale.
That's stupid
I’ll never forget this day. It SHOOK me so bad. Me and my husband just got off the carnival cruise and were walking in the airport when this flashed on the news. Never wanted to go on a cruise again.
That's like seeing a car crash on your way to work and never wanting to get on a car again 🙄
@@JustJohn505 ok and? What’s you’re point?

I was in 2nd grade when this happened. Crazy to think it's been 10 years.
You and me both
Huh? Same! How come everyone was in 2nd grade lol
I'll never board one of those 'skyscrapers at sea'
I was in the hospital post op watching this on the news after brain tumor removed, This is one of my first memories.
NO WAY ITS BEEN 10 YEARS, I remembered learning about this on casey neisat's Channel, it feels like it was yesterday. Prayers for everyone who had to deal with that on that horrible day
It was around 2013 that I learned of this disaster. At that point, it had only been a little over a year since the tragedy. Now its been 10 years

It was January 13th on a Friday how ironic of 2012 when this happened and the salvage operation roughly took 2 years
@@bluelagoon1875 what are you talking about?…
@@user-qf4tp2ix5v He's brainwashed. That's what.
Internet Historian did a fantastic documentary on this.
Once again, history repeats itself.
It’s unbelievable to think that 10 years have already passed since this tragedy.
This also sadly means he is almost 5 years away from being free from prison
I remember the day this happened. I was 4 years old. Don’t know how I remember but I do. My family watched the story and was saddened. But I can’t believe it’s been 10 years. Makes me feel like I’m old. I’m not the same anymore.
Sad so sorry for those lost lives in Costa Concordia and titanic June 27 2023 titan
I remember hearing the italian coast guard just LAY INTO the captain... Honestly the costa concorda and the fairy that sunk with a school of either Japanese or korean high school students were probably the worst modern day civilian sinkings... And in America a coast guard ship just sank with 25-35 service members still missing..... Horrible....
Was not a coast guard vessel or US service members, the Coast Guard was searching for a boat of mugrants who's boat capsized off Florida
The Korean ferry sinking was in 2014. Captain also jumped ship and saved his own butt.
In Argentina and Asia with a submarine
Watching this while currently on a cruise ship.
Don’t get covid
I remember being in 2nd grade, and going down stairs to see my older brother and mom look at this on the news on the computer.
Time flies. That was a cruise nightmare and that Former Costa Concordia captain is a complete coward for abandoned the ship whole there is still passengers and crew on board to escape.
Titanic engine cylinder engineering room
Titanic 2 engine cylinder engineering room
Titanic 2 engine cylinder engineering room
That captain should be ashamed for abandoning the ship
I've never heard of this, and I'm 31 years old!
I remember taking a cruise years back, and everyone had to meet up where the lifeboats we're located for emergency protocol. I'll say, that it was so hard to hear and so packed with people. Too many passengers not caring to listen, it was SO rushed and done in under ten minutes. After watching this video, I wish the cruise line took the protocol more serious(as well as passengers).
I agree, they definitely should take more time to practice the emergency protocols but they also have a strict schedule they must keep
During this tragedy there were several major events going on in my family and I didn't pay this story much attention. Then I watched a documentary about the Titanic and ran across the story of the Costa Concordia. After watching several different stories and documentaries I was FLOORED to know tat CAPTAIN abandoned ship while passengers were struggling to get off. They should have given that caption 1 year for every person who lost their life. Sixteen years was not enough for me.
One thing I want to draw attention to:
The Captain was at fault, but so was the Company. The Company, in order to save money, hired sailors who didn't even speak the same language because it saved them a quick buck.
The Captain is also to Blame, but the collision would've been avoid COMPLETELY had the company not been so greedy.
No, the dead people would have still been alive if he had just announced the crash early and not sugarcoating it
Most cruise ships hire employees that speak foreign languages
The captain was also giving orders in the WRONG language. He was speaking to the crew in English when the official language of the ship was Italian. Ships have this as a safety precaution for when there’s emergencies. So I still very much blame the captain for this. He’s a real POS and deserves more time behind bars
OMG! Actin' like they were miles out at sea. They were right by the coast!
Capsizeing in shallow water is not the same as sinking. When a ship sinks it is under water Sometimes miles under water.
It was sinking before capsizing it was drifting out too sea until hard winds blew it back to shore and capsized
Sinking means to immerse in water with no buoyancy.
I didn't even know this happened till now
Me either.
Thank God it was near those huge rocks!
Just a fyi to everyone , took 16 months to upright the ship and dock it and they went thur every inch of the ship and did find some bodies 16 months after the wreck . RIP
Yea I think there were two people they couldn’t find and one of the bodies they did find was a five year old 😢
Crazy that this was 100 years after the titanic
10 years... wow time flies by...news of this felt like yesterday
This happened when I was in 4th grade. The only reason I remember is because we had to do this project where we had to be “news reporters” and do a report. I reported on this!
I was a freshman in college lol 😂
Something tells me that captain will never learn his lesson regardless of how ever long he’s locked up.
*I had my neighbour who worked on Costa Concordia as a Chef. Luckily made it out alive. Has never been back on Costa.*
10 years already
what's sad is that only the captain was convicted, but not the rest of the crew and not costa. The woman telling people to go back to their cabines was not even accused.
My new Bride and I were on that Ship in Jan of 2009, and went on that same Route, Scary, God Bless those Souls!
Respect to Russel Rebello, the indian waiter who helped the passengers and even gave up his life jackets
This feels like it happened yesterday.
I was in Miami when saw the news on next morning Jan 14th and was horrible!
Was getting ready to board Oasis of the Seas that day!
10 years on and its still unbelievable!
I herd about it on the news day after instantly thought of Titanic don’t know why

what an informative video
Omg I can’t believe this was 10 years ago I remember it like yesterday smh. My 17th birthday weekend. I was in utter shock but couldn’t turn the news off
It's like the Titanic, but ends with lawsuits.
Loving all the comments that are like "Wow I was this age when this happened and now I'm ten years older!" like yeah dude that's how time works
I was on a cruise ship when this happened. We were all stunned as we watched the news.
Now that reminds me of the movie poseidon
The news came to us either on late Friday or Saturday morning, as it was day when I saw it on the news. As has been brought up, the ship only partially sank, and as this video explains, has little in common with the RMS _Titanic_ Disaster of 1912:
ua-cam.com/video/FAJB-lO_3hs/v-deo.html
Also, which of the three films called _Titanic?_ Certainly not the one from 1953. It’s closer to Herbert Selpin’s _Titanic,_ which, unlike the actual event but similar to this, criminal negligence and a lack of coordination among the higher-ups was a major theme.
I don't think the victim's families and survivors think the way that you do. Yes, while I do agree that it does have little to do with the Titanic, as it fully sank and more died, that's not what was going through those that were hanging off the side of the ship mind.
“My heart will go on!”
It's been *10 yrs* since this? Wow
The captain brought all of that on himself. Why would you do a sail by salute after dark? Why would you do one AT ALL? Glad that he’s rotting in prison.
Well he have 6 more years for his release.
Reminds me of the titanic
I cried watching this 😭 oh my gosh
i went on holiday to that same island and saw the ship in the last stages of the clean-up

Can't believe it's been 12 years. Doesn't feel that long ago
A captain escaping a sinking ship with passengers under his care is not only neglectful, but a cowardly act that cannot be forgiven nor forgotten. Even in the face of an inevitable demise, a legitimate captain tends to his crew.
I remember that ship 10 years ago
So 38 people died due to one dumb Captain
32, actually.
Terribly sad
Longtime since I was on that ship
I remember going on a cruise ship a year later I heard my brother talking about it I I was so scared every night that I didn't sleep
Wow why am I just now hearing about this. This is insane

The feelings of being on the movie Titanic☺‼️
It's not being happy. It's being scared
Ive seen so many people saying that it wasnt that bad that its modern day it was so close to land ect but i dont care that would be absolutely terrifing i cant imagine the fear, the only difference from it being from the movie titanic is that back then women and children were first and men understood that
Im scared now for msc cruises. I've never thought of such things
Can’t believe this happened 10 years ago. What disaster.
Costly mistakes if personal are acceptable. Costly mistakes if they involve other people's lives are irredeemable unforgivable unforgettable
Who comes here after watching DHRUV RATHE,S video
Wouldev been nice if they fixed up or something instead of scraping it
Wow The Titanic 2 Sequel looks very good!
I can’t believe it’s been 10 years ago.
I still can't believe that it's been 10 years since this happened. I don't blame anyone if they never want to cruise again.
This event pretty much was a modern titanic tragedy
missed up on how captin just leaves everyone behind sometimes makes you think he new he missed up or just thinking about his self
Titanic all over again in a way 🕊 r.I.p to the victims
There's a documentary on UA-cam on the raising of the Concordia. Very interesting to watch.
The sad thing is this was in 2012. The 100 anniversary of the the Titanic sinking. 100 years later and cruise ships are still having problems.
THIS WAS 10 YEARS AGO!?!?!?!? WHERE HAS THE TIME GONE............................
Can’t believe that it happened ten years ago
Happy 10th Anniversary To The Costa Concordia Sinking (January 13th 2012 - January 13th 2022)
pretty sure that would be anything but “happy”
i did the "drill" muster drill in 2006.... so it has been around
How could you not sue
Has it really been ten years?
2:08 Always have to bring the Titanic movie into it don't we. They weren't 'very similar' in anyway shape or form. In fact the movie doesn't even capture the true scale of the real life disaster by any means.
thank goodness someone here realizes this!
Wow 16yrs!! Omg stay in the boat
After 10 yrs it's till there
Wow! I can't believe it has been 10 years already.
I was just 16 when this happened. At the time I was studying a lot about the Titanic and then this happened and I was like Nope. I'm good. No cruise ships for me. Lol
