The Story Of The Oceanos

- Back in the early 1990's came an incredible event, most now, don't remember or know about. It was an event that ended with the sinking of a family cruise ship and an incredible air rescue all while the captain had already escaped. This is the story of the sinking, of the Oceanos.

It gets a bit more awkward when you realize that Moss Hills, the guitarist, singer and one of the entertainers, have survived the sinking of two cruise ships, the second being the MS Achille Lauro, which caught fire in the Indian Ocean and started sinking. Awards always take a while to make it through whatever process is needed to ensure they're awarded to the right people and you usually need to be nominated for them in the first place. I can’t understand how the Captain thought he wasn’t in the wrong for trying to abandon ship. He is responsible for the ship and the souls on board her.
Sounds like he just didn't care. He could have been the only survivor and it wouldn't have phased him in the slightest, especially if he had a half-dozen lifeboats full of people's valuables to pawn off later.
The truth is that no one really knows how they will react in a crisis until they are faced with one. Turns out this guy was a coward all along. One thing that cowards often do is attempt to justify their cowardice to avoid the crushing realization of that reality. He has to rationalize his actions both to convince himself that he's not a total piece of shit, and also to avoid admitting to anything he could potentially be prosecuted for.
@@drumguy1384 While that's true, the same could be said about literally any job, and it's really not an excuse. I get that he was scared, of course he should be, his ship is sinking in a storm. I can't imagine how scary is must have been as a passenger to be on a sinking ship, knowing the crew just abandoned you without even saying there was a problem.
The crew members who left the ship with unfilled life boats should have been charged with attempted murder.
That should be how they charge crew that does that
@@bjplayz9940 They left 500 people to die. Did you not watch the video? Didn’t even notify the passengers before fleeing.
@@bjplayz9940 First, because they provided assurance to the passengers that they would assist in keeping them safe in an emergency. That caused the passengers to make their decisions to board under what turned out to be false pretenses. Additional risk was present that the passengers were not aware of when they boarded, and that risk was created by the crew. Second, because the crew took equipment the passengers needed to live, knowing full well their actions could condemn many passengers to death. It was only through herculean efforts that those deaths were prevented.
I wouldn't say attempted murder, more like involuntary murder, which is where you know someone is in a life threatening situation, but don't bother to save them. I feel like that would make more sense, but I agree. The crew should be charged for attempted/involuntary murder.

There are extraordinary captains of course, but you'd be surprised at how many of the heroes are simply people who rose to amazing heights. Holy cow. This is the most bizarre thing I've ever seen. There's no alarm. Its like a normal day. No search of the ship. "No ROK divers competent enough?" I find that hard to believe. The captain left the ship, but he was helping people off board. No one seems upset. Then Park arrives and the rescuers "pretend" to be working for her benefit. All Park cares about is getting good video feed. She "orders" there to be "no casualties." Really? "Oh, if the president orders it, then we should get to work." I guess the real error is not ordering an abandon ship. Only civilian volunteers bothered to look for bodies. This is BIZARRE.
I made a joke to myself: The Mobile Combat Police will probably keep rescuers away. Then, almost immediately upon thinking that, I see the yellow jackets. Oh. My. God. The ship managed to stay afloat just long enough for everyone to evacuate before finally sinking
Reminds me of the B-17 "all american"

Robin Boltman was the best magician I have ever known. He successfully made two ships disappear: Achille Lauro and Oceanos.
Boltman’s parrot couldn't stop talking and interrupting his routine. Boltman and the parrot ended up in a lifeboat watching the Oceanos slip beneath the waves and the parrot hasn't said a word. Finally they get to dry land the parrot says. “Ok wise-arse, I give up, where did you hide the ship?”
The guitarist was actually involved in TWO sinking ships.. He was a hero in both instances.
The magician, Roy Boltman, was on the Achille Lauro when the ship caught fire and sunk, three years later, but he didn't need to be an hero that time, since the evacuation was done in perfect order, with the captain being the last one to abandon the ship, several hours after the passengers and almost an hour after the last crew members.

@@YukariAkiyama and maybe a kick in the face.
@Rusty Kinks ease off there man. No one died.
It even comes with the cowardly guy who is somehow in charge. It’s literally being written for any filmmaker.
God bless the entertainment staff that stayed and did the jobs of the actual crew who abandoned 500 people to die!
No 1 Died
Nike boi Im trying to say that the captain and other crew member left all the passengers behind on the boat, not caring that they could have all died.
@@Nightwalker-zk6ce I'm Just trying to say No 1 died Feel me Ok thx
Nike boi I get it, I just think that it was really selfish of the captain to leave the passengers on the ship to fend for themselves because people could have very easily died. Sorry, I didn’t mean to come off as rude or confrontational.
On the cruise ship, the entertainment staff is also the actual crew. They do the emergency drill at least once a week.
The ship holding on long enough to make sure every soul was off board and the entertainment staff are both heros
It's beautiful how the ship did not go down until all passengers were off
“... telling them that ‘We will provide the rock, and the ship will provide the roll.’”
What a way to make light of things.
More like bad foreshadowing
More like EXTREMELY accurate comedy
entertainer: okay now sliiiiide to the decks! sliiiiide to the boats! life jackets! (clap clap) life jackets! (clap clap) now get in real smooth. (cha cha slide music plays)

LOL, this was great.
I love these stories. These videos are always so well done.
I remember this happening when I was a kid in South Africa but being a kid never really knew what happened so thanks for the video and filling in the gaps.
if I learned something from Conocordia, Oceanos and Sewol is to do the exact opposite of what the crew tells you and that the captain is always the first to leave the ship
True story, sir.
Well we have exception too... titanic
@@aathiks9107 Adrea Doria too, the captain was the last person on the ship to make sure everyone was off.
aathi KS Yeah as heartbreaking and devastating as that was, Captain Smith was a true captain and leader. He made sure he could save as much of his crew as he could by staying behind to tell them his last order is for them to abandon ship.
@@aathiks9107 Titanic was one of the few that the captain went down with the ship. Smith was last seen heading back to his cabin as the bow went under, and nobody saw him again. He had the balls to go down with his ship, whether out of shame or honor we'll never know, but at least he did.
My Father was on the ship when it sank
He was air lifted by the airforce
All he said was that the captain was really incompetent
r/thathappened
I would bet it did, since this person has a VERY South African/Afrikaans name
I should know, I'm South African too.

That seems like an understatement.
I remember this when it happened. I was stunned that a modern day cruise ship sunk like that. For those few crew members..the entertainment staff and passengers who stayed on board to help organize and facilitate rescue efforts I can't find enough words to express my profound pride, gratitude and quite frankly hero worship.🤗 To the coast guard crews with their courage under fire and tremendous skills...well just wow.. Thank thank Thank you Thank you...
And to all the passengers who just held on..followed instructions, reassuring and encouraging each other, not fighting or trampling, just bravo! 👍👏
To the almighty who answered so many prayers..Thank you. As for that so-called Captain and the bulk of the crew that fled with not a shred of care for the passengers one can only pray there is a reckoning in the next world if not in this one. Spineless wonders...dang jellyfish, each of you should have served lengthy prison sentences at the very least. Post abandonment, dereliction of duty, attempted murder. A prime example of the worst of humanity. An unforgettable amazing event.
Wow! Rarely do I see a ship disaster that yields no fatalities. This was incredibly made!
That's me in the left of the picture @6:04 with my late friend Greg Clur. I'll never forget that trip.
oh wow that must have been traumatic
Sorry about your friend.
no wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy
@Dimitri Banakos he called him his "late friend" meaning he died at some point. After the ship incident.
I really went back to 6:04 to see two kids...
I can't imagine how horrifying that event was for everyone specially for kids and elderly people.
The ship is sinking, and there is no crew in sight!
Entertaining Crew: *hold my microphone*
The real heroes of this story
A case where background characters saved the day!
@@Piankhi_the_Greater yeah the main characters are usually someone from the passengers but not the music crew
Sounds like education in America. The admin fades out to leave students and teachers to fend for themselves.
@@danielmorse6597 did anyone ask tho?
Amazing how history somewhat repeated itself nearly 11 years later!
The musicians and entertainers are absolute hero’s, but a mention has to go to the ship also!!! Stayed afloat for 19 hrs and succumbed after everybody was off 👏
You should cover the sinking of the South Korean ferry Sewol from 2014. Over 300 people died, mostly high school students. They were told to stay put in their cabins by the crew. The captain fled the ship as well.
I just watched the New Yorker doc on that. I commented above on the similarities. All but one: the ROK disaster, there were no rescue efforts almost at all. It brought down the government. Well, it got the ball rolling.
April 2014, not 2013.
I remember waking up that day, awful tragedy.
ive watched it and it breaks my heart.mostly students
Which breaks me the most was....the students were sitting patiently waiting to be rescued....smiling and talking
.
Sounds like the captain of the Oceanos and the captain of the Costa Concordia would be great friends
Hayk Atshemyan And the Capitan of the Andrea Doria. He was one of the first onto the Stockholm after they collided. The engine room crew saved the passengers.
The "we were the cowardly asshats that dipped when things got real" crew
We should send them all on board a ship on the ocean without life boats and with no passengers. Just them, the ship and the ocean, and maybe one or two leaks.
@@Gentleman...Driver no leaks let them eat each other
Hayk Atshemyan Yeah, butt buddy’s in jail.
Great video and thanks to Moss Hills and the entertainment staff, with no help from the bridge. Having visited South Africa many times I know firsthand how treacherous those waters can be off the coast.
Just wanted to say thank you for introducing me to the Oceanos song by Coast. It's so good!!
My grandparents were on this ship the day it went down. They were rescued by the helicopters and entertainment crew. They are still thankfully doing well and have recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. The main crew also apparently went through and looted everyones cabins for valuables before getting into the life boats. During this time all passengers were in the entertainment area. Our family doesn’t go near ships now for obvious reasons.
The more I learn about this crew the more I realize that they are trash.
what an amazing honorable crew
Titanic captain: I will stay here and will be the last to leave or the first to die.
Oceanos captain: Lets go, Lets go!
It's more like
"Let's leave quietly so not to disturb the doomed passengers."
oopsie haha im so quirky I just fell into the boat
@@conesmad Exactly like... " Oh no. I didn't mean to end up in the lifeboat. I fell in. There was so many people rushing for lifeboats they pushed me into it. Even though they are all downstairs because we told them there was nothing to worry about and to go back to their rooms."

One would understand if Moss Hill had of decided, "yeah I think I am going to avoid ships from now, I'll just er.. stick to entertaining on land", but nope, this legend gets right back in there, still continued entertaining on ships and even became a Cruise Director, using his experience's to help and serve others.... respects to an amazing guy...

Captain Avranas: "the code is more what you call guidelines than actual rules."
Well yes, a captian should not go down with the ship. He should however make sure everyone gets out safely. Especially passangers.
Good observation Captain Barbossa...😉
That shit is only in the movies we get the guest of and follow
A captain should be the last person to leave the ship
well that's the old code nowadays its more the captain should get off last
