  • Back in the early 1990's came an incredible event, most now, don't remember or know about. It was an event that ended with the sinking of a family cruise ship and an incredible air rescue all while the captain had already escaped. This is the story of the sinking, of the Oceanos.

To be fair if you put the same people who manage and operate cruise ship theatrical productions in charge of operations that include coordinating and moving large numbers of people they would probably do pretty darn well. It gets a bit more awkward when you realize that Moss Hills, the guitarist, singer and one of the entertainers, have survived the sinking of two cruise ships, the second being the MS Achille Lauro, which caught fire in the Indian Ocean and started sinking. Moss Hills used what he learned on the Oceanos and helped people to safety. He refuses to stop entertaining on cruise ships and still sails.

Ships are their own enclosed environment, with often only their resources on board to survive. There are extraordinary captains of course, but you'd be surprised at how many of the heroes are simply people who rose to amazing heights. The SS Pennsylvania was saved by a passenger (although he had been a crew member before, credited with saving many lives on the RMS Atlantic, the baker on the Titanic, and so many more. People whom you wouldn't know as amazing until they were. I don't think they knew either until that moment, they simply did what had to be done and became heroes.

As a South African we were shocked and couldn't believe what happened but back then our armed forces were very well equipped and trained to deal with these things. We also had 2 of the best open ocean rescue tugs in the Southern hemisphere, they were the "John Ross" and the "Wolrade Woltemade " they were often sent out to tow in damaged commercial shipping vessels. The captain left the ship, but he was helping people off board. No one seems upset. Then Park arrives and the rescuers "pretend" to be working for her benefit. All Park cares about is getting good video feed. She "orders" there to be "no casualties." Really? "Oh, if the president orders it, then we should get to work." I guess the real error is not ordering an abandon ship. Only civilian volunteers bothered to look for bodies. This is BIZARRE.

Robin Boltman was the best magician I have ever known. He successfully made two ships disappear: Achille Lauro and Oceanos.
Boltman’s parrot couldn't stop talking and interrupting his routine. Boltman and the parrot ended up in a lifeboat watching the Oceanos slip beneath the waves and the parrot hasn't said a word. Finally they get to dry land the parrot says. “Ok wise-arse, I give up, where did you hide the ship?”

The magician, Roy Boltman, was on the Achille Lauro when the ship caught fire and sunk, three years later, but he didn't need to be an hero that time, since the evacuation was done in perfect order, with the captain being the last one to abandon the ship, several hours after the passengers and almost an hour after the last crew members.

I sailed on that ship 2 years previously from Pireaus to Istambul. The captain hosted his friends during entertainment, disregarding other passengers. Our cabin was switched during the initial sailing, much to our dismay. The subsequent actions of the captain 2 years when the ship took on water and sank came as no surprise to me. I read the headlines in Pennsylvania newspaper 2 years later. I still have that paper.

I remember this when it happened. I was stunned that a modern day cruise ship sunk like that. For those few crew members..the entertainment staff and passengers who stayed on board to help organize and facilitate rescue efforts I can't find enough words to express my profound pride, gratitude and quite frankly hero worship.🤗 To the coast guard crews with their courage under fire and tremendous skills...well just wow.. Thank thank Thank you Thank you...
And to all the passengers who just held on..followed instructions, reassuring and encouraging each other, not fighting or trampling, just bravo! 👍👏
To the almighty who answered so many prayers..Thank you. As for that so-called Captain and the bulk of the crew that fled with not a shred of care for the passengers one can only pray there is a reckoning in the next world if not in this one. Spineless wonders...dang jellyfish, each of you should have served lengthy prison sentences at the very least. Post abandonment, dereliction of duty, attempted murder. A prime example of the worst of humanity. An unforgettable amazing event.
