    The best thing to say when an accusation is made, in my opinion, is to say "I don't know". Just as we should not believe the accused is guilty without evidence, we should not assume that the accuser is lying without evidence. Many, if not most sexual assault cases do not have adequate evidence because it is easy to get away with this crime if you hold financial power over them, so we should not quickly accuse people of lying if there is insufficient evidence.
    Normalize saying "I don't know" and leave it at that.

    I remember seeing a youtuber laying out all the facts in the late 2010s (I want to say 2017 but only clearly remember it being sometime before the pandemic and at the tail end of the height of #metoo). She laid out evidence of things she noticed with their relationship, Amber's treatment of her parents and Amber's history of Abuse against her former girlfriends. She did such a great job convincing me that I was convinced that he was probably innocent of most of what he was accused of and if he was guilty of something it must have been provoked by extreme circumstances. The Justice for Depp people where there for a long time. They were just laughed off as MRA crazies, 'pick me's and other unflattering things.

      so the daily wire took out $40,000 worth of 'anti-Heard propaganda', and they spammed it in front of the entire public. im not saying she was "a girlscout", completely innocent of anything, but to call her a "gone girl level abuser" might have been influenced by the dozens of thousands of dollars of propaganda bankrolled by billionaires who were ... personally invested in Depp?

    Hollywood isn't exactly left leaning. It's extremely liberal, but that doesn't mean left of centre, only left of something like financial services. Hollywood is very happy to maintain a mode of production in which the means of production are privately held, making it inherently not-left. Tolerating The Gays doesn't make them anti-capitalist, it just makes them libs, in the most politically accurate sense

  • @pressxtojason

    I feel like I have a unique perspective on this because ever since I was in high school people told me I looked like Johnny Depp. This was during the height of Jack Sparrow mania back in the mid 2000s so it came with a lot of attention but it also made me realize that people would subconsciously impose who Johnny Depp is onto me. For example, a [cute] girl I once knew thought I was a really good actor (I'm not nor am I even remotely interested in theater). I definitely noticed that people treated me different because my very presence was like a novelty to them. Anyway, I never really let it get to my head since I knew if Johnny Depp EVER fucked up, people would associate me with whatever he did, so I was oddly invested in Depp having a good reputation.
    I kept joking back in like 2012 "what if it turns out that Johnny Depp is a wife beater, and what, am I just supposed to look like a wife beater for the rest of my life??" My friends all laughed and were like "boohoo shut up, I wish I looked like Depp or [insert some celebrity]." So when the Amber Heard story broke, I felt slightly vindicated for that joke but just like I predicted, people dead ass stopped pointing out my doppleganger status. Like I was getting stopped by randos at the grocery store on a monthly basis, but ever since the Heard thing-ZIP! NOTHING! So yeah, I was one of those people that hopped on the anti-Depp train at the time because I knew people would look at me and think: red wine drunk wife beater.
    TBH it's a bit of a relief since I never really enjoyed the attention to begin with, but I can't help wondering if people think I'm an alcoholic, rich brat with emotional immaturity issues just because I share a similar facial structure. Or on the flip side, do red pillers look at me and think I'm on their side. I can't win. Sometimes I just wanna look like a Sims character.

    The Bible was used to justify segregation in the American South and apartheid in South Africa. The "Me Too" movement served to bring down some terrible people; but when it was used as a cudgel, where a bad date became a reason to attack someone, that is too much. The members of a lacrosse team are under a cloud because of accusations. In Hollywood, an actor called a group of photographers a gay slur. He went on a lengthy tour of talk shows, abjectly apologizing for his actions. The attempt to overthrow the will of the people, and prevent the peaceful transfer of power from one group to another, led to an invasion of the Capitol, where lawmakers were forced to hide, because they literally feared for their lives.Yet, this act is now being portrayed as being misunderstood, and the rioters are being hailed as patriots and heroes by some people.

  • @seanbrodney7716

    So I've just come to the conclusion that I need to pick my battles carefully and never let anyone know what I actually think until they feel safe enough to share what they actually think. Ask questions which draw out answers without tipping my hand too much or making them feel judged, really listen and let them develop and lay out their entire argument, consider what they have to say and evaluate whatever merits or usefull perspectives it might have. Maybe push back a little on individual things that don't make sense to get them to elaborate.
    I find that people who do not have a real argument to stand on crumble when they're forced to actually explain their beliefs in depth, and I can usually put the pieces back together for them in a more reasonable way.
    If they simply have axiomatic beliefs that are incompatible with mine in bad ways I usually disengage or else systematically poke holes but feign neutrality. There's no point in arguing with pro-life advocates, but it can be entertaining to chip away at their confidence in their reality by slowly teaching them history, or giving them an inscutible smile while remaining a little too quiet, and occassionally giving absentminded "mmmhmmm"s. Essentially an uno reverse card of "oh you're wrong but I still hope to save your soul eventually".
    If their argument is reasonable (backed by solid logic, good assumptions, and/or good evidence), or contains reasonable elements I generally treat them as an equal and show them my cards to some extent, compare notes, and discuss. I'll keep whatever I can use to better explain the world, and file the rest away under "interesting but needs more evidence".
    I think what really helps me with this, however, is being autistic and containing a fair bit of spite lol, not any sort of virtue. I usually actually have to be watching for people's social cues to pick up on them, so they just don't hold the same sway for me most of the time. Like what, I'm supposed to go out of my way pick up on your hostility or passive aggressiveness or whatever else, AND react the way you want me to? Nah, it was already too much work to figure out your nonverbal cues, I'm not also going to cater to your unspoken whims, I'd much rather beat you at your silly little social game or else sow chaos.

    Having said that, this has always been this way, is just that the public opinion has shifted in a direction where so many people that used to be the upholders are now the ones being “silenced”, and they now have places to find people with the same opinions on social media and complain about their situation.

This was because I felt strongly about the topic and was willing to sacrifice those social points but you can bet I conform in most other ways.

  • @DrPOP-jp7eb
    @DrPOP-jp7eb 2 роки тому +5

    I don't think this is such a big problem as it's made out to be.
    People who are informed or at least have a strong conviction are more confident in their opinions. If you don't feel very strongly about a topic either way, it's logical that you let yourself be influenced by others.
    Of course, not everyone who is confident is actually informed, so it's important to stay critical. But let's be real: we can never absorb all knowledge out there or inform ourselves about every topic.
    One example is vaccinations. Or flat earthers. I can't go around and confirm all their science. At some point, I simply need to trust that the generally prevailing view that vaccinations are safe and that the earth is not flat is the right one. And there are good reasons to do so. But it's still "public opinion" and the value of someone "speaking up" against the notion that the earth is a globe is... minimal.
    We live in a society. And we depend on other people to form our world view. We are effectively pooling or crowdsourcing our knowledge. Sometimes that goes horribly wrong, turning into violent excesses. But it's also indispensable to civilization.

    Ah, but Jared - what if the people who doubted Amber initially, always retained their doubts to some degree, and are now the ones championing Johnny? And what if the spiral of silence has a two way street? The voices championing Amber could be the same, but are silenced by the same shame the champions of Johnny felt in 2018. It’s convenient to o suggest the voices are the same, but the position has changed. But, it’s just as easy that the spiral of silence has merely, like a lobotomized minnow, changed course.

    This is a pretty lukewarm warm take but I think it's as simple as Amber Heard getting her comeuppance on the public stage allows a subset of people to finally go "see we told told you they [supposed victims] aren't all saints". I think the lie(s) that she told was an example of a MeToo situation where people blindly or prematurely believe the claims of the supposed victim. I don't think the blow back on Heard would have been nearly as bad if we had not had the last 5 years of people online overwhelmingly being supportive of supposed victims when they didn't warrant the level of sympathy they got. Though, I want to caveat, I use the term victim very loosely here. This is just a collective build up of anger and annoyance on the part of a lot of people being let out on a supposed victim that was shown to have lied.

    • @wisdomsnap8695
      @wisdomsnap8695 2 роки тому

      @@sneakers_guy5488 I disagree with the idea this is some unique level of animosity in the first place. This is a classic response to people making claims that seem to be trying to destroy some beloved star's career. This is the pre me too status quo. If there is extra animosity, I'd imagine it's actually an inverse of what you said. That people who supported and still support the idea of what metoo was originally trying to do see Amber as extra guilty. Guilty of omitting her own level of physical abuse against Depp while lying about the level of physical abuse from Depp but also she is guilty of using the movement for her own selfish reasons thus delegitimizing and re suppressing real victims stories.
      The subset you are referencing are just broken records at this point who have been screaming this for over 5 years now on every case whether substantiated or not in an Amber Heard like tactic to grow their careers, followings, or to push disconnected political agendas. Most people aren't paying attention to that, most people probably only really engaged with this situation when this court case started. It isn't some swell of "I told you so" but of people engaging with the case for the first time and finding an old friend or old crush of theirs in trouble. It's definitely a classic media cycle in combo with Depp's teams PR moves. Perfect example is the manufactured will they won't they between that one lawyer and Depp. That's manufactured to remind people of the Depp they fell in love with 15 to 25 years ago. That visceral cult of celebrity plus nostalgia hacking is what fanned these flames. A tale as old as Hollywood honestly.
      I don't bemoan the tactic as I do feel Depp got overly screwed by this but I also don't think Depp's career tanking is Heard's fault. I don't know if you were paying attention but Depp's decline in ability and professionalism and his inability to handle money was being reported on well before Heard. I think she should be punished but culture warriors are really overstretching their hand here and basically claiming vindication in their own church to their own choirs while most of the public is operating on a much more visceral and myopic mentality.

    This is a very good breakdown of one of the main reasons why I am mostly antisocial. I have always been vocal about stuff. I write songs without any plot that are mostly social commentary and heated debates is something I enjoy very much, while I understand a lot of others find it very uncomfortable.
    I grew up with a bunch of people and when I moved out from my neighborhood when I was 14 up until now, I've never really made any lasting relationships with other people. Not because I don't want to, but because I would never be able to afford being as honest and sincere with other people as I'm still able to be around the people I grew up with. Conformity has always been a serious issue in society and the more I grow up, the more polarized society seems to become. I think I am very quickly turning into one of the so called "beautiful ones" from John Calhoun's Universe 25 experiment. There are so many people out there, some of them get pretty aggressive and I tend to just sit at home and entertain myself.

    Hi Jared, can you suggest few books on philosophy to someone like me who is starting into these topics?

  • @tobiaswedin
    @tobiaswedin 2 роки тому

    Public opinion has throughout history, at least in Europe, in popular topics worked similar to a pendulum. Whether it's generational where teen counter culture takes the opposing stance as their parents did on topics such as public conduct, sexuality and so forth, or political trends such social liberalism after the fall of nazism, it really doesn't streamline progress like left leaning people tend top think. The same can be seen with third wave feminism right now, the foundation for what we accept as truth and not just a "progressive left" stance has slowly been pushed further and further left to the point where we now see a rise in hardcore biologists, both men and women of young age that searches for more traditional relationships, cultural figures like Jordan Peterson and more that acts more as a reaction to the zeitgeist rather than a well thought out world view. This case is just more in that same vein; the other side of the very coin that was exposing sex offenders without trial was the very destruction of many innocent lives for everything from overreactions and misinterpretations to straight up lies and now with such a public showcase of what is obviously such a case people finally have something tangible to latch onto for momentum with the next pendulum swing.

      Barely any mainstream outlets are. They will literally watch a deranged doctor call Johnny and idiot on the stand and call him a narcissist (in between throwing his own fits and licking his teeth), and they will call Depp's fans toxic for shitting on him for it. They will watch testimony of her blatantly lying, fake crying and getting destroyed on cross, then post an article being like "we need to believe amber!" Or "we are going to regret not listening to amber!" Its pathetic

    It seems like the loudest people in support of Depp aren't so much supportive of him as an individual so much as they just like seeing a feminist woman that claimed to be an abuse victim be exposed as a fraud and reveling in a major supposed loss for feminists, and likely don't even see domestic abuse as a real problem (except when it's happening to them or another man they identify with). The loudest supporters of Heard, likewise, aren't as much supportive of her as an individual (albeit still somewhat more supportive of her as an individual than Depp's supporters are of him as an individual) so much as they are of the mindset that acknowledging things like female-on-male abuse and other forms of misandry causes people like the loudest Depp supporters I've described to win. The real larger cultural problem seems to be how people don't acknowledge how most of what makes certain things harder for men than women aren't things that exist in spite of patriarchy, but rather because of it. People who actually care about either women's rights or men's rights should seek to extend the rights of both rather than act like one needs to win out over the other, because when you actually trace things back, most misogyny and misandry comes from the same source, and both feminists and male advocates really want the same thing, they just have wildly different conceptions of what that thing is. When they actually work, feminism and male advocacy don't cancel each other out, but rather work together to make the best situation possible. People need to stop making the situation about women vs. men and should just hope that the case goes through the court system properly.

      You are right in that I wasnt supporting Depp as much as an individual even though he was wronged on an individual level. I was hoping this would shed light on male victims and the role false accusations play in the power their abusers have over them.
      I also agree that people who want to see equality between the sexes should be eager to team up but...
      "aren't things that exist in spite of patriarchy, but rather because of it"
      It is impossible to team up with someone who's main philosophy is sexist victim blaming and who's solution is to tear you down. I want to raise everyone up to equality rather then bring others down to it.

    i been wanting to read the spiral of silence of a while though its an expensive book specially when you live in a third world country.
    that said feel what we need to do is trying to build a culture of selfawarnes.. that understand public opinion and reality are 2 different things and for justice to be archived ..you cant take sides on stuff you are not involve directly.. or have build a strong understanding of all the side of what is happening.. not all the side of the argument... cause just taking on account arguments is not seeing the whole picture.
    now sure this is an ideal objective that is arguably not possible for a human to fully archive.. but working toward it while having a clear idea of where one is expecting to much of themselves .. could be a healthy state of mind for regular people to be able to navaget this world of goverment/ corporate entntities that are not interest in empowering or helping grow the everyday person but are intact trying to control what they think, say or do. either for their own monetary benefit or to keep a hold in their structure of power like governments and politicians.. who are more concern with controlling the perception of truth than speaking and dealing with the truth.

    Jordan Peterson is a misogynist and a racist. I don’t see a problem with discounting him as a “philosopher” or ignoring his ideas. Some people just don’t need to be a part of the conversation and that’s not a terrible idea. Especially when a person argues in bad faith and has little to add to the public discourse beyond fomenting toxic culture. I won’t “both sides” Peterson’s trash ideas.
