Great video...never thought of magazine paper...and I have a ton of old mags. I will die under an avalanche of scraps if I don't get going and this fits the bill. My son says I am the oldest hippie he knows. Also a retired art teacher, so this is greatly satisfying in all areas. Thanks for sharing.
I have a friend who gave me a great tip by using dryer sheets as the backing and stabilizer. I made a beautiful library bag using it and the bag smells great!
My grandmother did this for what she called "crazy quilts." She used muslin fabric instead of paper or using a stabilizer. I have a box of completed squares, so I will be looking to see what I can make with them (as I already have a quilt from her).😊
I want to thank you for sharing this. I've sewed for over 46 yrs n never seen this. I'm having so much fun with this . I'm making a quilt n doing some blocks like this. Thanks for sharing❤
If you'll start with the center piece having 5 sides, (cut one corner off to make 5 sides), it will give you a different angle of your scrappy blocks. I use the paper phonebooks that still come to my house. It's super thin. I've also done this without a paper or with an old sheet or ugly fabric. Sometimes the reverse side of fabrics will add to your fabric scrap choices. You can also use black and make stained glass look. I just found your channel, woohoo. Being able to subscribe is an honor and a blessing. Having comments for others tips is priceless. Thanks... Babs near Tombstone, AZ
Ohmygouda !!!...I spent the afternoon playing with your instructions...what fun...some of the smaller pieces I cut away will make a great middle, and it didn't bother me to toss some of the cuttings. Heavy sigh of relief...this is gonna make a heckofa piece of fabric....
Thank you Jan ! I always wanted to make a crazy quilt and couldn’t wrap my head around it . Doing the smaller blocks would definitely make it easier. Thank you again. 😊
Thank you for this! I've been quilting for a year, diligently saving all my scraps but had no idea how to piece them together without going mad... I've been wanting to make "remembrance" panels using the scraps from quilts I made as gifts, then can make a super scrappy quilt for myself with them.
I personally hate removing the paper, so I prefer using fabric instead of paper ( muslin is good) or scrapping directly on a thin piece of batting. Just my preference. I love watching this process and always pick up a tip or two. Thanks!
You are so welcome. You can sew right on a stabilizer fabric, but I find that if you are joining panels together, the seams get way too bulky. If you are just making one panel, yes, sew directly onto a stabilizer fabric.
Love this! I love sewing, but sometimes I don't have the brain capacity for a big project or I'm in a project rut. These scrappys are addicting and fun!!! I have a giant (12x24") bag of scraps, so I can make lots of scrappy squares for a future project. 😍
I was just going to ask if using the paper was necessary bc I've been piecing my scraps together without it but I haven't put all my preferring l pieces together yet
I’ve been doing this for the past week. Mindless sewing and I love it! I’ve made a notebook cover and have two more on in the process of being made. I’d love to try the zippered pouch next and thought about pot holders and oversized casserole hot pads. I’m getting a great start on birthday gifts for friends. I’d love some more ides for things to make.
Love the way you use paper but I use squares of material the same way. Usually an old sheet cut up to the size needed I have used a thin batting as well..love the way these quilts look when the squares are all joined together Way to go 😂😂🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺. Happy quilting
Oh my, I was expecting this to become a big quilt and my mind was racing about how to balance the colors and prints. Now my mind is bursting with small projects to make, and even using this idea as a decorative element on linens, clothing, etc. Great, thank you!
A wonderful video. Your demonstration was so helpful and your calm, reassuring American accent helps me understand perfectly. Thank you so much from Catherine in France
Thank you so much Jan, I really really enjoyed watching you create those fabric scrap squares that we can use for lots of different projects. I think they’re really cute and adorable too and I can see how addictive they will be once I start working with them. Your tutorials are very helpful and so useful too. Please stay safe and well too xxxx Mags ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Suggest you make your stitch length a bit shorter, it makes tearing paper off much easier. Thanks Jan. This will be a great way to teach my 9 year old granddaughter how to use machine using my scraps. 🎉
Watching for the first time. I really like this tutorial to use up scraps of fabric.Hope to try this but think I am going to watch it again….and again!
This is fun. I have used newsprint paper, it tears away easily, its very inexpensive. I don't buy many magazines lately, too expensive. This gave me ideas. Thank you for sharing this with us.😊 Liz in Northern California 🦓
Thank you for your video. My daughter in law ask for a quilt using her dog’s scarfs, so I checked UA-cam and discovered your tutorial. It’s fun and quite addictive. Can’t wait to see the end product!
Thanks so much Jan for this video . I live on the islands and someone just gave me a bag of scrap aloha fabrics . Going to have fun making blocks out of these scraps .
I inherited my mother's spools of thread and some others too . I use all different colors to use them up on my crazy crumb quilt blocks. I also use the tiny tiny pieces and misc. threads to make pin cushions for gifts 🎁
Ma'am, you are one of the Best tutor. Showing every thing step by step for us begginers. Thats very kind of you. I made one with the stripes, but I made the one you are making now, I love this more. Looks so beautiful. Again ma'am thank you soooooo soooo much for your kindness & patience for us. Your Projects are perfact& beautiful. I love the way you do not hide the measurements. That is a very big help other wise without that we end up with a mess.wish you& your family the Best .
I absolutely love this video. Thanks so much for showing us how to use up our scraps in such an innovative and beautiful way. I have an idea to make a top using this newly created fabric. Can’t wait to get started!
Fabulous tutorial. So clear and detailed. Have made crumb blocks using strips of scraps joined together but this looks so interesting and will use up more of my scrap stash. Thank you. 🎉
So glad I watched this video!! Thank you!!! My dad passed away 4 years ago and I made memory pillows from 9 of his button down shirts. I kept every piece of scraps from his shirts. I am going to make a cell phone bag for his 95 year old sister so she always has her phone and still has a bit of memory of her brother. Thanks again!!!!!!❤
This looks like so much fun! I really like that the panels can be made in small blocks of time, not to mention that clearing out some scraps will help declutter my sewing space. Off to find some old magazines!! 😊
I also like to use a smaller stitch link when using paper as it perforates the paper. But better yet I use inexpensive muslin, batting scraps or ugly fabric. Thanks for your video.
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful sewing project I really enjoyed watching it and going to start as a beginner to enjoy my free time with this valuable piece of art it’s amazing and love it
Hello from Wyoming, thank you for all your helpful videos. This video has made scraps so easy to use up & cut my trips to the recycle center a bunch. Great videos thanks again. Ugo
Love your videos, you are a inspiration, and a super teacher! Great to watch even if you know how to to do all the techniques. So, I think you have great taste. A fan for sure.
I have made so many of these scrappy pieces over the years, but not normally by paper piecing. I usually use either muslin or an old sheet for the backing. Even after all those pieces, I *still* have four boxes of scraps. Guess I need to get back in there and make a few more scrappy projects.
@@JanHowell well, I started a small project today, to be mailed to my friend in Oregon. I only have one part of the project ready to mail, and hopefully I'll have the two mug rugs done soon. I don't think I'll venture into a full-blown quilt top yet, though. 🙂

Im a 58 year young hippie with a 20 yr old granddaughter . She swears she was at Woodstock. 😂😂 She would love a quilt like this.
I have a friend who gave me a great tip by using dryer sheets as the backing and stabilizer. I made a beautiful library bag using it and the bag smells great!

Dryer sheets are ok but they will mess up your bobbin case after a while, They have residue on them.
Yes, it is actually wax!@@grandmajane2593

My thoughts exactly. Maybe an old sheet or old shirt
I use used dryer sheets. They smell nice too.
I use old washed-out sheets or odd scraps of interfacing

Love this. I dont use backing or paper. I just sew one big piece. Then cut it down as i need. Then use backing later.
That's great
That's how I would it I think it's a waste of fabric. Now that I know I'm not alone I think I will start sewing my scraps together

Yes, when you need bigger panels for larger projects like zipper pouches, etc., sewing directly to stabilizer is great.
This will be useful. You do great crafts and are very easy to listen to👍
