    I was a mod on r/fivenightsatfreddys when the first few games came out and we liked to fuck with Smike by hiding fake teasers and secret messages in the banner. One time we hid “Merry Christmas” and he made a whole video speculating on a potential Santa animatronic.

    Something you missed about Reply Girls and why they were actually a problem is that UA-cam used to allow Video Responses, and those responses would show up directly beneath the video being replied to. There were more issues with that than just Re:Girls, because people would upload adult content with explicit thumbnails, and those thumbnails would get shown in the replies in the few seconds or minutes before being censored.
    What killed Re:Girls wasn't any kind of algorithm change or backlash. It was literally just the removal of the reply feature. That killed them instantly. UA-cam themselves actually did comment on Re:Girls, stating that they disliked them and would do something to quell them. That was all they needed to do.

    • @vanessaashford9203
      @vanessaashford9203 Рік тому +36

      honestly, I *always* hated the video reply feature and was glad when they got rid of it, like even beyond reply girls there were other channels that seemed to exist entirely to start flamewars with other users (usually vloggers of various sorts, back when that was a thing) via reply videos, they were particularly a big thing in the atheist UA-camr community if I recall (yeah, I know, fucking cringe, but keep in mind I was literally a teenager when I watched any of those channels...and even then wasn't entirely sure why I watched them, as most people in the "community" were just so insufferable and obnoxious), but I'm sure they existed in other niches as well. Like there would be these entire channels where the only content they put out was hostile video replies to other channels they disagreed with, and then sometimes the other channel would respond with a reply vid of their own, and the thread of angry videos would just go on and on and on. It was just such a bad feature on every level. The worst part? We can thank this past feature for the existence of lazy reaction video channels, which are still very much a thing; like sure, I can see the humor in those old reaction videos where someone would show 2 Girls 1 Cup to their grandma or something, but a lot of current reaction vids are just some loser giving their unsolicited opinions about whatever random higher-effort videos they can find, it's such lazy and boring content.

    • @UBvtuber
      @UBvtuber 8 місяців тому

      @@vanessaashford9203 I think video responses had their place and were a fairly good way to get attention for smaller channels, but the problem was many people put little to no effort to capitalize on it. So, it got filled with low effort garbage.

      The reply section was such an odd concept. On popular videos, it would spin like a slot machine, since most of them would be open to everyone. People would just post whatever they had to garner views. It wasn't limited to the Re:Girls, you could add any video you previously-uploaded to the website. Everybody abused it.

    I don't know if you mentioned this, but UA-cam didn't allow more than 10 minute videos for the first 5 years of its existence. This rule absolutely encouraged short-form stuff. It wasn't until 2010 when YT started its Content Creator verification system for partners that you could upload more minutes. When this happened, the floodgates were lifted and a deluge of hour-long+ videos hit the world. YT now paid more for longer videos, thus the "skip the first three minutes as it is nothing to do with anything" rule that still applies today.
    Poops evolved and adapted, getting shorter and transforming into seconds-long memes that can be embedded on platforms like social media, message boards or in comments sections on any website. One might even argue that the low-quality s--tpost is the natural evolution of YT Poops as they are short, easily made and have the same quality control issue.

    also speaking of features that have been removed from UA-cam, among the favorites playlist that I loved (now I just treat my liked videos as my favorites and only like videos if I want to come back to them, I absolutely miss how custom your UA-cam channel could be, custom pfps but also with custom pages, and color schemes to match, it was the shit back then, really reminiscent of MySpace, and it really made people’s channels stand out from one another, gave it more character and it might have been the deciding factor for if you started watching a new channel, simply bc you liked how they made their page look, UA-cam has removed all form of personality aside from the actual videos and luckily we still have custom pfps (knock on wood) but there used to be so much more life in these channels before UA-cam was just another money making machine

Hell, Japan is also in love with him, so much so that they recorded extra songs in the Japanese version of his album, Everybody Jam!, by far his biggest claim to fame in the land of the rising sun.

    I was there when YTP's got popular, the actual reason it died is unfair copyright takedown. Popular YTP creators would spend weeks, if not months on a singular video, only for it to be deleted instantly due to youtube's bs copyright system. I feel like if that didn't happen, YTP's would have naturally declined and would maintain a natural audience.

    YTP and Video Replies actually came together for another interesting story.
    There was a short YTP by kiz038 that was titled "Dragonforce". It was just a simple poop made from the band's infamous 2006 Graspop concert. It spawned some memes, but the video itself isn't really the interesting part. For whatever reason, a bunch of people in the YTP community decided to start setting most of their videos as replies to Dragonforce. They would prominently direct their viewers to do the same, just saying "MAKE ALL YOUR VIDEOS A REPLY TO THIS VIDEO". This fad actually became really huge, and sometime around 2010, Dragonforce actually became the most replied-to video on UA-cam.
    Sadly, the video was eventually flagged and removed. I suspect it was because of another channel that was competing to try and get the most replies to its own video, which was just a GTA4 stunt montage titled "MOST REPLIED VIDEO ON UA-cam". (Honestly I have nothing to support this theory, and it was probably just a regular copyright claim.) At the time, the vast majority of video creators weren't really "partners" and didn't have connections or resources to protect their channels from copyright strikes. Plus, it wasn't a career for them, it was just for fun.

    I remember back in 2016 and coming across react videos whos entire fad was reacting to UA-cam poops and SMG4 videos. I think his name was Charmx or something but I eventually grew out of his content and moved on. Of course, like the other people you mentioned such as smike (god that brought back memories seeing his name pop up in the video) once those youtubers/fanbases he was stealing content off of died down he just ended up deleting his entire channel and moving on. It's absolutely crazy how easily these channels can pop up, and also how easily they can disappear. The saying might be "Once it's on the internet it stays there" but clearly in these cases where the channels were so useless and unimportant that nobody bothered to catalogue them that what we have are almost the equivalent of scholars only having accounts by the romans of empires long gone. There's no first hand account for those empires and the same for these videos where only the few re uploads remain of what these channels produced.
    I think this is a fantastic video just like the rest that really highlights a corner of the UA-cam sphere that played a completely underrated role in shaping the internet and what it became. YTP arguably became the new r/comedyepilepsy for zoomers and content farming youtubers helped introduce many young kids (such as I at the time) introductions to these fanbases or channels that ended up creating a whole other set of memories about.
    Keep up the great content and I look forward to your next video, I know it'll be another banger.

    UA-cam Poop is pretty much a rare thing nowadays. There's only a select few channels left that still make YTPs, but I feel like UA-cam Poop Music Videos (or YTPMVs) and Sparta Remixes are even bigger fads that often became overshadowed by their older brother because of how much easier it is to make characters say something unusual than making said character sing to the tune of some random music or constantly stop something or someone from finishing what they're doing in a rhythmic fashion.
    YTPMVs often took music the channel owner liked, took a source and edited that source to match the music by having characters and sounds repeat continuously in rhythm with the music. Eventually some folks would start making YTPMVs *without* background music and would somehow make a full on remix of the track that many often listen to compared to the original version.
    Eventually the YTPMV genre gain popularity in Japan which resulted in videos that instead of being simple edits were full blown production videos using 3D environments, a shitton of effects and editing and camera shifts. Not *every* Japanese YTPMV decided to go that route but the ones that did often used bizarre sources for their YTPMVs.
    Sparta Remixes are self-explanatory. You take a source, sometimes multiple, and edit them in a way that fits the Sparta Remix instrumental you're using. When done right it can be pretty satisfying to listen to.

    I really don't think SMG4 was just a fad. A lot of people watched him for a _long_ time and only left because his overall output quality started to get worse and worse. As someone who started watching him when he had less subscribers than I do now, I'd still be watching him today if he were more laid back with his content and if he were to stop shoehorning in serious storytelling and characters that obviously only exist to sell merch.
    I think I need to point out that I don't have a problem with change itself. He changed a _LOT_ between 2011 and 2017 and I was happy with all of it, aside from some characters getting used less and less. The changes after that were pretty bad and did nothing good for his content. Now, his content is little more than a husk of its former self intending to only really appeal to kids on the internet. All of the edge and genuine parody is gone.

    Blooper videos definitely bring up the wider history of "machinima" from before the company was made. Just the developing genre of game footage edited and performed in like some kind of narrative that's meant to be viewed and shared on the internet before it was grabbed by the company that took its title. I feel like blooper videos are almost like a separate movement of machinima in that regard and can be looked at as one of those pure expressions meant to be enjoyed, even by people from outside of the community. There's still nothing to be gained like in youtube poops, but the wider mindset was almost found horizontally on youtube before it became a modern, paid internet experience.
