Keep the big blocking board!!! When you move you will have more room in your new house and you will have room to store it. It's no longer made so if you get rid of it and you regret later you can't get another one. The foam puzzle pieces are great but you need a ton to block a large item. Storing lots of puzzle piece mats takes more space to store than the large mat. The blocking mat and a few puzzle pieces will do the job for any medium to large sized piece of knitting.
100% agree. I have that same blocking board (and the puzzle piece squares, too). The folding board is my go-to as the measurements are already on it. The board is irreplaceable.
I’d LOVE a video cracking the code of different yarns: sizes, composition, strands, types etc. And I notice in your early videos you used different sizes of yarn, while now everything seems to be wool and fingering. I’d love to know why. And from a selfish viewpoint, I’d love more crochet! Love your channel!
Love seeing a new Knitty Natty upload! Everything looks amazing and I’m so so excited to see your blanket when it’s finished ❤️ #question Do you have any plans on making videos about your business? I love your older videos about that and ever since listening to your episode on PGSD I’ve been curious to know more about how things are going. I know that you were a bit apprehensive to talk about money but I’m hoping that any response you’ve gotten has been good because we all love supporting you!
Thank you for at great episode. I have thought of a tip for "remembering" to have enough yarn for the decreases in the Musselburgh hat. Weigh your yarn before you starte, weigh it again then done with the increases. weigh off what you need for the decreases, and make a loop and wind the yarn around the cake again. This way you can just knit away without thinking about how much you need to save. I hope it makes sense :)
Natalie- just be aware that your Citrine sleeves in stockinette might be somewhat larger than the twisted rib-I’m sure you’ve thought of that! I’m enjoying your adventures 😊🧶🥰
here's an idea for your leftover granny squares. I always turn them into a scarf and then yarn bomb sculptures in the winter. I live in a big metro city with real winter weather and lots of bronze statues of people and animals who look to be chilly. I know some people think it is unlawful but the scarves rarely get removed until spring (when they are looking pretty bedraggled by then). I know for a fact many people find them charming. IF not made anymore, I would say keep that blocking board. I think you may come to regret getting rid of it.
I also wanted to say that the way design keeps getting shifted out of the schedule makes a lot of sense! I know paradigms really help you process things, so you might want to look up the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. But basically what you reminded me about is that everything can be ranked on Important and Urgent. Ideally we will get to a place where we are spending a lot of our time on Important but Non-Urgent things. That's where the special sauce is and a feeling of calm, centred purposeful living. The problem with something like design is that unless you've made a commitment to someone else, it's not urgent, so it can get lost in the clamour.
My bust size is 42" but the rest of me is smaller in comparison, so I knit without much positive ease on the bust otherwise it drowns the rest of me, this has been trial and error much like you, but boy is it great now I know what works.
thank you for introducing Andrea Lui to us via your membership. I use a range of her physical therapy exercises which are really helping. She is definitely a great Knitter's PT 💕
KnitIQ has a great canvas bag for storing blocking mats. I found it on Amazon and it fits 2 sets! There is a handle on the bag so it’s great for storing in the top of closets. I echo several others - keep the bigger mat. If you design sweaters in the future you can use the measurements on it to pin out other sizes.
Your boxy is perfect 👌🏻 And your colour choices are gorgeous. I am a confident beginner knitter, ( first knitted project was socks. ) It would be wonderful if you would consider creating a tutorial for casting on and knitting in the round. (I have the Musselburgh hat pattern and would love some direction on casing on) Happy making Love Carly from Australia
Hello Nathalie! Thanks for sharing your tipps and experiences. I makes totally sense to measure favorite items and use this information for future projects. Also with industrial knitted sweaters or cardigans. In the other video you also mentioned you like Joji Locatelli because she has a similar body shape as yourself. This is also a good information to search for designers (or projects) who design to my own shape and stick to them. One little advice reg. the Suri "Apple cider" - don't toss it away completely. Sometimes you might hook into the lace section with a finger, ring or zipper and an original thread to repair a hole might come handy then. I always keep a bit leftover yarn in a tiny ziplock bag labelled with the project in case it needs repair.
Hi Natalie, your icicle story reminds me of when my sister and I visited the UK. We are Australian, along with the other Aussies we were so excited to see a squirrel. We were told to calm down by a Canadian couple, who said it was just a squirrel and rolled their eyes. As an Australian I would have been just as excited to see any Native Australian animal, but clearly squirrels are seen daily in their hometown. It has been very hot the last few weeks and people are complaining and I’m loving it. 😂 I live in south east Queensland and our climate is so mild. I’m enjoying the heat and love being able to go to the beach for a swim any chance I get, the hotter the better. 🥰 It takes me about 3-4 hours to drink my tea, glad for a good thermal mug.
I always say "Less Stuff, MORE Life" as I embrace what Minimalism means for me. I love your podcast and being a member of your Love In Stitches group. Thank you for great content in your podcasts too 💞
I would definitely keep that large blocking mat! Having a flat surface with no joins I think it’s invaluable! Lovely interesting video and your boxy sweater is without doubt the best fitting one I have seen. I think your modifications worked splendidly! Take care Natalie x
Natalie, From an environmental POV, anything you already own is more environmental than anything you buy. So keep your big blocking mat. It’s neatly stored away and still useful.
Keep the blocking board! It seems to be a rare item, and you never know when you'll need it. I recommend you listen to Becoming, by Michelle Obama. She is the narrator, so puts so much of herself into the read. I have her newer book on hold through Libby, The Light We Carry. I can't wait to listen to it.
Keep the blocking board! Sometimes you can fall out of love with an item in the current moment only to want/need it a bit further down the track - you currently have a little storage unit, is it possible to take it over and store it there instead of your apartment? Also I love your citrine light 😍 I’m planning on my own in a denim blue ❤
I love your Lace and Fade Boxy. I love how you added the fifth repeat of the lace. I have the pattern in my queue to make. I have three fingering weight colors that I want to use, with two “stripes” each with the lace in between. But I wasn’t sure how that would look until I seen your boxy. Now it will be next on my needles. Thank you for your feedback on the pattern.
Your boxy is perfection in fit and colors for you. Thank you for sharing your trial and error lessons on fitting your knits. I also love your inclusions of time management and your project journal. I think it’s really helpful for me to break a project down into steps and note how much time it takes me to accomplish each step. This is particularly helpful for items I will be working up repeatedly. Your video reminded me I need to stopwatch time my Musselburgh making in steps as I’m about to cast on a new one of those. For people who are interested in how to plan out a project in steps or set out a general plan of a certain number of projects over a certain time period and/or set up a life plan calendar to block out the necessary time for accomplishment and maybe need a little guidance to get started I highly recommend these two books: How To Get Control of Your Time And Your Life by Alan Lakein (1973; my copy is 1974 Signet Printing small paperback 160 pages), and Time Management from the Inside Out by Julie Morgenstern.
Thank you again for sharing the realizations you’ve made about your knits! I hear you regarding the reading speed changing with different genres. So funny about the icicle! Can’t wait to hear all about your vogue knitting live experience!
You came to my neck of the woods! I am in Poughkeepsie, about 30 minutes from Beacon by car, and I LOVE spending time there. There are sooo many great coffee shops, boutiques, thrifty shops, etc.
I make a lot of items with tiny amounts of scrap yarn. (I usually make little stuffed animals, sometimes with different parts in different colors and weights.) I’m sure plenty of people would love little scrap balls of yarn. 😊
43:21 so working at home today and listening to the podcast… husband (who wfh everyday) just walked by my door and said “she is a witch” I said excuse me ??? Why the hell would you say that! His response… She is doing more with less … it’s easier to do more with more… witch Thought you might get a laugh out of that 😂
You can use children's foam play mats for blocking knitting and its a lot cheaper because they aren't specifically marketed to knitters. Also, I wish I could get my hands on that folding iron on mat/blocking board. That thing is AMAZING.
@@peggyisme I’ve never seen this happen. They’re designed to stand up to bleaching and all manner of chemical cleaning agents. I have seen ones marketed for knitters do it though. Usually not sold by an actual knitter owned company… but just cheap 💩 from overseas that wouldn’t meet health and safety standards for kids.
@amandabaule6709 it may have changed in the last 2 years, but we worked in a yarn shop and were hired several times to get the dye out. Some things just had to be redyed.
If I have a large project, I tend to sit at my crafting table to work on it. The smooth surface allows me shift it. The table carries the weight and its at a good height. I can set my tablet up and watch, read or listen at the same time.
Exactly! this is how I sew my squares together or puzzle out my pattern for filet crochet. I also wear a weighted should brace for improving my posture which has helped my back alot. And setting a timer so I get up and walk around every 30 minutes or so....otherwise I would be very bent over by now.
I use the continuous join on my crocheted hexagon blanket and love it. I have used it on my scrappy granny square blankets and it is my preferred method.
☺ It's my bad! Natalie, you are correct in the both cases, I told ''Eastern'', because from where I'm located Asia is east and Europe is west. This is some of the fun ways that my mind operate, I didn't considered that from US location have a difference. So yes, specifically in Asian countries and the fear of the number 4 is known as tetraphobia.
Sometimes the designer gives the number of skeins needed rather than the amount of yarn actually used. So they might say 6 skeins, but in reality only a few yards of the sixth skein is used. It is really more helpful when they give the actual yardage.
Thank you for explaining the adjustments you made and the trail and error. I just found you this year and you are inspiring me to try making a sweater. I'm getting my measurements done soon. Lots of love from the Pacific Northwest 🧡
You and Kent seem quite adventurous, and enjoy experiencing new places and things! My Question is, would you consider living in another country for a while?
I have the same blocking mats and the same board don’t throw away that board . If I had a spare room I would glue or staple the foam mats to a wood board and post it on the wall. Good for blankets sweaters and any projects I sew knit crochet or tat.
Love the boxy! Great fit and it made me want one lol As for the folded block mat - I would definitely use it! Living in a 5th wheel, minimalist is my mantra (as it is with many who live full time in RV's). I also sew and I have no place to lay out my material to cut out patterns and that folded mat would be awesome! I'm going to see if I can find one on amazon. I want to make some bags and dresses and have the material and no place to cut them out except outside and it's too cold for that. But that's me and I sew and knit and crochet so I would definitely use it. Thanks for a great podcast! Oh and I love your scrappy square throw!! I have a tote where I m collecting fingering yarn to make a scrappy blanket.
I used the tutorial from fiber spider to join my granny square together and it was so much easier than having to weave in all those ends will always do this method when joining squares . I love the way you did your squares where they are the same color in each square will differently be doing one of these !!!!!!
Love your Videos 😍 I have been watching for a while now... Just found the courage to write now 😉 Love your boxy sweatshirt! Couldn't you use the 2x 11g for some sock emballishment like heel or cuff? Best Wishes from Switzerland 🇨🇭
Hi Tiffany, On your boxy - could you have increased the SS section, above your first lace row section, to lengthen the arm hole and bring the overall sweater length down? It seems that it would make adding sleeves easier. I'm a bamboo needle girl myself so your new needles have been on my radar, they're so beautiful too.
#question Am I the only person that gets "hiberate in me during winter" vibes from the granny stripe blanket, but "hide from the spring showers in me" vibes from the granny square blanket? I think the white joining yarn makes the blanket granny square blanket look lighter, somehow...
If you like the CJYG check out Becky Simmons and her ASA (All squared away) blankets for great use with different sized squares to make designs such as flowers, cats, and footballs.
#Question I really appreciate you sharing your process for goals! I am usually pretty averse to concrete goals but I am finding I am having difficulty accomplishing a few things. How do you keep track of your progress? Do you use paper or a particular app? Thanks!
The number 4 thing is from many East Asian cultures but I believe it originally comes from the word four in Chinese sounding like the word death. It isn't just knitting needles, I think they even skip level four apartments in buildings!
# question. Hi Natalie, just wondering if a pattern (a shawl)is designed using DK yarn what adjustments would you make to knit it in fingering weight yarn? Thank you.
#question For your granny stripe blanket, did you only change colors at the start of a new row? Or mid-row? I'm tempted to just go until my current scrap runs out, but I'm not sure how that would look. Love your newest Boxy!
I would definitely keep the big blocking board. They don’t sell it anymore and it’s not really in the way or taking up space that you could be using. Spare was a good read, I had a hard time when he talked about his mom, just super sad.
I love your granny square blanket and the joining color is perfect. But I thought “join as you go” means you connect the squares as you knit them. You are joining them after they’re all knit. Am I getting the terminology wrong?
I want to make a pair of socks, my first. Can you recommend a pattern and yarn to use or is there a kit with the pattern, yarn and needles needed to make a pair of socks? Thanks
#question have you ever consindered trying patterns by danish designers? E.g. Knitting for olive, My Favorite things knitwear or PetiteKnit - Love your videos btw :)
#question I’ve discovered that my best fitting sweaters have a 50” finished bust. The problem is all the sweaters I want to knit seem to have a 48” or a 52” finished bust. Is there any easy way to modify this? I feel like the task seems so daunting to figure out. Maybe it’s just my math resistant brain! 😂
#question How are you liking your Lantern Moon needles so far? I recently purchased a small set myself and had to immediately purchase US4 and a few more swivel cords. I found when I first started knitting the needles felt a bit sticky but after rubbing them down with a clean cloth they were great. They are so lightweight and smooth but not as slick as KP needles.
Based on the label you showed, the Magpie yarn is only 75 grams!! That doesn't solve your yardage problem but would explain why it's knitting up as a fingering weight, not a sport weight.
#Question how do you store your tabletop yarn swift? I just recently got one from Fiber Artist supply co and I love it but need ideas on how to store it.
Natalie!!! Born and raised Upper West Sider here-- it doesn't matter at all, but it is actually pronounced lev-ayn! not lev-ahn. (But it super doesn't matter!!)
4 being unlucky is originally Chinese thing. It sounds like the word for death. In Chinese-speaking countries, it is common for buildings to skip the 4th floor. Since Chiaogoo is Chinese, it makes sense that they wouldn't include a size 4 in their sets.
It’s also the case in Japan, where I lived for almost 5 years. It’s like unlucky 13 in many Western cultures, but on steroids! They don’t market 4 of anything; even dishes and cups come in sets of 5 place settings, not 4, as an example. But she’s talking about Lantern Moon not having aSize 4, not Chiagoo. I have several Chiagoo sets and they include size 4.
@@jeanscully8511 I've added the word "originally" to my comment. Because of Chinese influence on language and culture, other East Asian cultures also avoid 4. Apparently, Lantern Moon was originally Vietnamese, which also avoid 4 because of the Sino-Vietnamese words for "4" and "death" sounding alike.
@TheresaHall is right, I was thinking of telling you that I would love to release you of any yarn scraps you you want to throw away. Please let me know if that's an option. Take care.
Ideally, no one will ever use the amount the designer recommends. A good designer will build in a buffer that accounts for variations in gauge and still give enough breathing room that you're not playing yarn chicken. Most of my patterns have a 15% buffer.
For me, sometimes fitting in an hour of something is too much. You could play around with smaller chunks of time 20/30 mins or at different times in the day, until you find something that works. I hope you have a great time at Vogue.
Perhaps the word you’re looking for is genre? Harry and Meghan are questionable figures; I think take that book with a good seasoning of salt. It’s a 400 page plus read so yeah, long! Btw, I think you should design sweaters. With all the customization you do, I fully believe in your abilities.
I very much like the severance series. I don’t really like the whole Meghan and harry stuff. They sound a little whiny to me. But I agree, use salt when you read and watch stuff.
It's a sad commentary on the pattern that you had to make so many adjustments to make it look reasonable. In the original pattern, the giant boxiness of the body combined with the tiny, almost deformed arms makes the sweater very infantilizing. You shouldn't have to practically rewrite the pattern to make it wearable.
Agreed. Keep it. Especially for sewing or quilting.

Love your Videos 😍 I have been watching for a while now... Just found the courage to write now 😉
Love your boxy sweatshirt! Couldn't you use the 2x 11g for some sock emballishment like heel or cuff?
Best Wishes from Switzerland 🇨🇭
Hi Tiffany,
On your boxy - could you have increased the SS section, above your first lace row section, to lengthen the arm hole and bring the overall sweater length down? It seems that it would make adding sleeves easier.
I'm a bamboo needle girl myself so your new needles have been on my radar, they're so beautiful too.
#question Am I the only person that gets "hiberate in me during winter" vibes from the granny stripe blanket, but "hide from the spring showers in me" vibes from the granny square blanket? I think the white joining yarn makes the blanket granny square blanket look lighter, somehow...
Keep the blocking board!!! But if you want to get rid of it…I’ll take it.😅
If you like the CJYG check out Becky Simmons and her ASA (All squared away) blankets for great use with different sized squares to make designs such as flowers, cats, and footballs.
If you wanted ribbed sleeves, you could combination knit the ribbing (which is faster and uses less yarn!)
Maybe you can make the mini toaster blanket from the left over squares. If it felts he likely won't care :)
I think what you're referring to when you speak of number 4 being unlucky is Japan, where the word for 4 is "shi" which also means death :)
Thanks
For the blanket, I use a lazy susan on a tv tray
#question have you ever consindered trying patterns by danish designers? E.g. Knitting for olive, My Favorite things knitwear or PetiteKnit - Love your videos btw :)
They are called Fat Quarters, great way to make scrappy quilts.
This is my question as well!
I'm sure I asked this about 2-3 weeks ago 😂😂 still waiting to hear 🥰l hope we get a response 💕
Well, Natty
..since Toaster seems to have claimed your granny scrap blanket, save enough for another one with a different stitch?
Measure the musselburogh hat after it has had a chance to rest, maybe first thing in the morning.
Natalie!!! Born and raised Upper West Sider here-- it doesn't matter at all, but it is actually pronounced lev-ayn! not lev-ahn. (But it super doesn't matter!!)
#question Are you planning on starting any new crochet projects this year?
#question did I see you in the Drew Barrymore show audience a while back?
For me, sometimes fitting in an hour of something is too much. You could play around with smaller chunks of time 20/30 mins or at different times in the day, until you find something that works.
I hope you have a great time at Vogue.
Please make closed captioning available, Natalie.
Hey Dolly! I'm so sorry about that. It should be available now!
The word you’re looking for is “genre.” An autobiography is a genre. Lol - as I’m typing this, you just said “genre.” 😂
Very interesting an enjoyable until you got to Prince Harry's book
It's a sad commentary on the pattern that you had to make so many adjustments to make it look reasonable. In the original pattern, the giant boxiness of the body combined with the tiny, almost deformed arms makes the sweater very infantilizing. You shouldn't have to practically rewrite the pattern to make it wearable.
