I really liked how you approached your son after the rooster encounter. You were calm and redirected to the fact he needs someone to be with him anytime he's in the pen. I feel like, you comforted him, yet reminded him that it had happened before so things had to change so hopefully it won't happen again. Such a good daddy!😎

@@whitehouseonthehill I am not a homesteader. But I am a descendant of them. I would not hesitate to get rid of a rooster to protect my family. My gramma was almost killed by sows when she was a young girl. According to her nephew (who was 16 years older) she was nothing but mud and blood when he threw her over the fence. He thought he was carrying her dead body back to her mom (his grandma) when she twitched. They cleaned her up, as best as they could. With kerosene. Can you imagine!? Her mom, my great grandma, took a cleaning job at University of Iowa Hospital, to help pay for her care. This was about 1920. I enjoy your story.

Yeah this happened to me when I was a kid. We had 30-40 chickens and 5 Roosters, my mom asked me to go into the chicken coup and get some eggs for breakfast. I went to their nest area, and started collecting eggs. Apparently one of the hens was not happy and start making a bunch of noise and flapping her wings. Two of the Roosters jumped and started flogging with their spurs/talons. My dad heard what was going on, ran outside but I had gotten nailed 10+ times since I was locked in the coup and couldn’t get out with them flying around my head. They had full grow spurs that had never been trimmed as well, after this they were my dad made sure of it. I was probably 7 or 8 when this happened. I’m 32 now, but it was definitely terrifying to experience as a kid.

@@barbaravick5634 exactly what i was about to say. Respect THEIR spaces? These aren't wild animals. These are animals that are specifically bred to behave a certain way to meet the needs of humans and have a demeanor that is calm and trusting to make the husbandry somewhat easy. You cant care for animals very easily if theyre attacking you and you sure as hell shouldnt have to stress about your children being able to be around chickens. This rooster was not protecting anything. He was showing his dominance. You can hear him crow right after as to celebrate his victory and to let others know hes top etc and thats dangerous. I understand that you need to be careful with little ones and children around larger farm animals like goats and cows etc. But birds? No way. My children want to work too and what better way for them to learn than with chickens? I honestly don't get how his reaction was so "what did you do" as if his son was at fault somehow. Obviously he wasnt saying that. But

My dogs have cages we put them in, but we let them run around. The cats just roam around, we feed them cat food, but they still do kill small snakes and squirrels. I’m just concerned about when I get chickens that they might get attacked.

Thankfully, he is the sweetest rooster that we have ever had. Teach em' while they're young. People always think roosters are the meanest things ever.

She had some deep scratches. Luckily she healed hardly any scars. She still loves chickens and roosters. We separated him from the girls so they saw each other only in the pen. My mom was so upset she swore we were going to have rooster for dinner that night lol dad came home and talked to her. She didn’t find out till the next day that it was me and my sister that hid the axe. She thanked us and told us never think about doing things when you are angry! I’m so glad your little boy is ok. When my son was in grade school one of his friends he met had been attacked by a rooster when he was little. He had a big scar on his face that never went away. So yes it’s really important to respect animals and understand they can sometimes be unpredictable. Even something as small as a rooster could inflict a serious wound.
That being said, your boys are lucky to grow up on a farm and you aren’t putting them in a bubble. Being outdoors, running playing, jumping and exploring animals is such a unique opportunity in today’s society. More children need to have this experience💕

White House on the Hill It is scary. I’m glad you shared it though. Some people don’t realize that for as domesticated as many farm animals are, there is still a wild and unpredictable side to them all, especially the males. I chuckle a bit at Doug and his ram but I know of people who have been seriously injured and even killed by a ram.

Back when I was in Mexico my great grandma would have tons of chickens and I was attacked by a rooster as well! She told me once you realize how much bigger you are than them, you wouldn’t be scared any more. I still had to be careful and respect the roosters boundaries though!

I'm retired now so I can devote more time to it, mainly more chickens. I too, have lots of mean rooster stories and have had to shoot one. Our current guy is pretty calm towards humans. Anyway, glad to see your son wasn't hurt too bad. Good luck and God bless your family and farm!

Family friends that have roosters have a little girl, one rooster was aggressive towards her and so they grabbed them by the feet gently and held them upside down and showed them to the hens, it did not hurt either of the roosters but showed them that humans were “the boss” and whatnot they are now not aggressive at all, it may not work for every rooster but it worked for the two they did it with

Guys whoever sees this don't do that never hold a chicken upside down they could choke to death on feed from their crop a much better idea is to grab them and hold them give them feed and love if that doesn't work for them to respect you when they chase after you run up stomping at them with your arms up to be big and scary and grab them out of the air

  • @sebasty6111

My rooster speared my leg to the bone. It took some time and constant cleaning to get this to heal.
Later when he tried again, I put him in place by grabbing him by the legs and putting him on his back, legs held. Held him like that for several minutes.
We get along now. He had massive bleeding recently due to comb injury (pecking...) so he is getting a lot of handling by me, treatment and avoiding the future incidents.
