I don't think I can describe just how excited I am to see the birds go in the Aviary! I have been dying to see them have some space to move around! I started watching your channel when you hatched Bamboo all those years ago and I am just amazed at how much your family and farm have grown!
I wouldn't recommend lily pads, unless you are consistently on top of them, lily pads can get easily out of control and take over the pond and choke out other plant life.
@@3dski124they have those in their lake and you're right. they really get out of control. i think Jake has had to burn a section of their lake every year to cut it down.
The koi and the goldfish can hybridize as they're closely related enough. The koi with the armored scales, or that have no scales are called doitsu because they're mixed with german carp in their ancestry. The different colors and patterns all have different names. The classic orange and white koi who have a balance of both colors are called kohaku. It wasn't stated in the video, so you may or may not be doing it already off camera, but you'll still want to feed the fish as the algae alone is not enough to sustain them. Certain foods, and water quality can enhance the colors of your fish, though that can attract more predators. If your fish are left to breed, the following generations will eventually go back to their natural wild brown. So depending how much you wanna get in the hobby depends on if you want to breed more carefully or not. Koi, and goldfish are great fish who can eventually learn to eat from your hands. And they bring a lot of enjoyment to a water feature no matter how they look.
Jake. As a fellow Missourian I have to say you make this old man proud to see what you have built for your family and my entertainment. I've been around the channel for years and I'm very excited to see the bird sanctuary filled with some of the birds. Are you going to put the golden pheasants in there? They are my favorite I've never seen in person. Their beautiful and I would love to see them more. Anyway Bless you and your family. Keep up the hard work it's paying off.
One think I learned from Rice Farmers down South is, they grow three crops in their ponds: Rice, Catfish and Crawfish. They feed the Catfish, left over food just feeds the Rice, Catfish Waste also feeds the Rice and all excess is cleaned up by the Crawfish. This way they don't burn out the Rice fields with fertilizers, they get Rice, Catfish and Crawdads to take to market. So, add about 4 Crawdads to your pond and they can clean up the fish wastes and stray vegetation.
I have a koi pond and it made me smile to see you guys get koi. The red and black ones are called 'hi utsuri'; Bones is a kikokuryu, and sunny is a 'hi matsuba' [I think I saw some black at the top, like a forming net pattern and looked to have some metallic scales. Otherwise, she could be a benigoi. And yes, that was a leech. But it's a plant leech. They don't suck blood. Just eat plants and decaying matter. Harmless for the most part. But this is why you don't want to put plants right into a pond. You want to treat them with potassium pormagnate in seperate container for 3 days to kill everything off them, then remove all dirt and rinse off. And just use rocks to fill the container. You don't need dirt for plants in a fish pond because the plants get their nutrients right from the water that has the fish poo which acts as a continuous fertilizer for the plants. Also, i agree hold off on getting more fish. Fish release ammonia and if you add too many too soon the pond does not get enough time to create the nitrifying bacteria to break down the ammonia. If the ammonia gets too high in the pond, it can kill all the fish. Make sure to feed them, it helps them become more friendly and it will help them grow. I recommend a high protein diet. Check out 'we're so koi' for a healthy feed that doesnt break the bank. They also have excellent selection of koi. Please reach out to me if you have any questions on koi keeping. I am more than happy to share information 😊
@tammystoudt5137 Thank you! When I started out, I learned a lot from nice people in the koi community so I now try to pay that forward by sharing what I've learned to others new to koi. 😊
POTENTIAL ISSUE: I know you said the net was heavy, but I just saw something that might be a potential issue and I thought I would mention it. So, I worked on an orchard that had similar poles, wires and netting to keep the birds out of the cherry trees. If the winds kicked up enough, the wires/bolts at the top of the poles would abraid the netting causing holes. I am wondering if on the center pole you should put a circular metal plate with a rolled under edge to support the center of the net like we did? It made such a huge difference. The outer poles weren't really and issue, just that center one. We also used cable clamps along the wires to hold the net in place so if a hole did happen it wouldn't slide down or be blown off exposing a large opening to the sky.
That’s so exciting adding the fish! You’ll never regret it! We had a 1,000 gallon pond and added koi and goldfish …. We put in a 12 inch ring and at feeding time they all came to feed within that ring. The koi were the friendliest! Enjoy! ❤
I have watched for years and I am so happy to see how far y'all have come. Once those native aquatic plants start to take off and grow they will absorb those extra nutrients. Perhaps add more like Duck potato, more pickerel weed, rose mallow, or other native aquatic plants to help decrease the algae.
Happy Belated Anniversary to one of the sweetest family and amazing Husband and Wife/ Daddy and Momma.... Much love to the hardest working family in Missouri!! Always God continue to send blessings 🙌 to each of the White House on the hill in Missouri!!❤❤
I grew duckweed and floating plants such as hornworm in a old stock tank to feed my koi, goldfish and ducks, stuff grew like crazy, essentially free food. Would just chuck a huge bucket full in my pond every week or so. It’ll also feed on the nitrogen produced by the animals as they’re plants that rely on the water column for nutrients.
First you inspire me to get ducks.. then you inspire me to get emus... Now I'm needing some koi!.. Thank you always for your videos! Happy Anniversary to a inspirational family
I had a small goldfish pond when my oldest son Paul was young. He and I would sit in it and push a small sailboat around. His pond is several years old at this point and whenever I visit his home that's the first place we go to talk. I am certain the memories you are creating will be with your children forever.
Cant recall the physical parameters of the pond, but in areas where water freezes, the catfish will require a depth of 4 feet or more. The size and water flow/oxygenation seems ideal .

Hi there! Lovely fishes. I had fishes for many years and the general thought is not to touch them with your hands. It interferes with their slime coat and makes them more susceptible to infections. Just a thought.
It’s amazing to see all the progress over the years Glad also that the pond is so well built that the fish have plenty of hiding places Well done pond dudes! Spectacular build!

Hello Jake! Been watching you guys for awhile, I’ve kept plenty of fish and I’d recommend some under water plants for extra oxygen and a place for them to lay eggs. I’d also recommend trying not to handle the fish too much by hand due to the slime coating and the bacteria on our hands. Overall great work! The rock hiding places are perfect for the adult fish hiding
You need a UV light added to the filter, or a separate unit that filters the water through and shoot back into the pond. Protects against pea green water and kills some bacteria. Don’t let the kids catch the fish, leave the fish alone, and the big kids jumping in on them is a good way to kill them. You need to test the water. And btw they will eat a lot of their own eggs, they will attach their eggs to plants, but then the others go in for the caviar!😂
I love all of the cool looking koi 🐟 🐠. I like seeing all the colors swim together. But I also maybe on a upcoming video want to see how big the 2 baby Emus got
I have a pond in my backyard with goldfish. I did find that the less fish that you have in it. The fish are very shy. The more you put in that they are bolder and will start to school together. Then you will see them in the day too.
My brother had a beautiful koi pond in his back yard. He got the green thumb, and his yard was stunning in the middle of Oklahoma City it was just green and colorful. Anyway, he had some fish he had in there for fifteen years and they were BIG and beautiful that would come up suck on your finger and eat out of your hand. If you put your hands in the water a couple would come sit in your hands as if to be saying hello. Huge tail fans and some pricy fish. Different moms and so, when he passed away unexpectantly his mom was selling the house and in doing so sold the fish to a dealer in the city. I can't tell you how much I cried over those fish, but they meant nothing to her. Treat them right and they will treat you right. They still need to be feed at the junk on the bottom is not enough and what you feed them if the thing to feed will keep them bright and bring out color. Good luck with the pond they can be a pain.
I follow a channel who has a pond comparable to yours. I've followed them almost as long as I have you guys. They've had the pond several years. They also had issues with algae and moss. This past year they've put some shrimp and they're eating algae great. They have literally tried every kind of algae eating fish. Shrimp was the ticket🤷🏻
I bet you're talking about Weed em and Reap. It's funny because I found Weed em and Reap from White House on the Hill when they were creating a garden years ago, they referenced Da'Nelle.
Shrimp are awesome... don't think they would survive in our spring and fall weather, but maybe we can try it if we have a heated pond or heated stock tank.
@@whitehouseonthehill The only shrimp in the wild in Missouri are the two species that come up the Mississippi basin, but not much farther than the bootheel. That's probably a full hardiness zone warmer than here in northwest MO.
Honestly I miss seeing Bamboo… having you give him love and see his fun personality. With me, it all started with his hatching and adorable antics. Never see that any more. 😢
All of us are soooo excited! I loved this video, everything is turning out so great. Good job on getting that net over, cant believe you did it seems nearly impossible. It will all be worth it in the end. Im lovingg the aviary.
I believe the plant you placed into the pond with all the ‘roots’ is water hyacinth, very aggressive in the waterways of the south. Good luck with the plants, fish, and pond!!!
Happy Anniversary!!! wishing you two a great day and hope you two get to do something fun together!! maybe go out to dinner by yourselves? Your ponds look great with all the different fish. enjoy
As a long time keeper of goldfish and koi, they were just hiding till they could adjust and feel safe in the new pond. They are smarter than you think and basically spent a few days looking for predators. As they get used to you they will become more friendly, the koi even more so. And as for breeding the fish will eat quite a few of the baby fish so I doubt over breeding will be much of a problem as only the very smartest and fastest will survive.
I look after fish as a hoddie and I own 8 goldfish from comets to shubunkin in a small wine barrel pond and they will be afraid of comming out after a week or so but you can encourage them during quarantine so that they know they are in a safe space and when they are in the pond they somewhat know they will be fine. What their koi and goldfish do is hide as they we straight up put into an new environment right off the bat and also the kids catching could also be a reason
0:17 actually, not to split hairs, but that looks like a Comet goldfish! only pointing it out because theyre one of my favorites. Fantail goldish have stouter bodies and 2 fins, which can actually make them unsuited for ponds because they are too slow to eat before the other fish get there. Comets are great pond fish because they are straightbodied, but their long, deep forked tails(what theyre named after) keep the flair you may miss out on in a standard goldfish. There is similar with koi, in 'butterfly koi' however theyre somewhat debated in authentic koi circles. I'd recommend going down the rabbithole of koi and goldfish types and colors! If not for nothing other than feeling that much smarter when describing your own fish.
Sometimes different things work, yes a plate for the top may keep it down more but if you put zip ties on the wires could help too, and maybe you should get a extra net just in case
Congratulations on your 18 th anniversary! May the Lord bless you all. Maybe you can make it as long as ours 51 yrs, it was on the 31st of August. Congratulations also on the beautiful koi and other amazing fish. Can’t wait to see the ducks and big birds go into your amazing aviary. Lots of love, in Christ, Bitsy
You should do a ring or half circle of grass around the inner fence right after the gravel and then more gravel/sand so it only grows around the outside. That way the birds have an area to get bugs and eat grass if they want to but it's not so much that you can't get to it when it needs to be cut down.
You should rake out the long strands of hair algae. Koi and goldfish will not eat it, but they can control the growth once down to the surface. They'll be able to at least graze the surface that the algae grow on. Watching BamaBass youtube, you could use tilapia fish too. Though they may not survive winter months, you can catch and stored them into a holding container inside shelter from freezing temperatures until next spring/summer or you can filet them.
Hi from Australia 🇦🇺 Just a note about fish and humans in a small pond as they don't mix well so it you want to see your fish keep out of the pond and you will see your fish more otherwise they will hide as they are scared when your kiddos keep jumping in the pond but that's just me and it's your pond so you can do whatever you want but that's my advice plus you will need more bottom feeders if you want to keep the algae to a minimum
Love the fish! Not sure how much you know about fish, but you should never handle them with your hands only a net. Every time you handle them by hand you are taking some of that protective slime coat off their bodies and opening them up to health problems like Ick, Fungus etc.. Also, you have to remember that we as humans have oily hands that can harbor bacteria. Even though it is not enough to make us sick it can and will make the fish sick especially if you keep handling them with your hands. Please always use a net when you need to handle the fish. I am saying this because i am an experience pond owner and also have had fish tanks my whole life. I still do have fish tanks. I am in my mid 50s now. Also not sure if you put stress coat in there the day you introduced them to the pond. It helps with the slime when they are stressed and keeps them from getting sick easily and a healthy bacteria should have been introduced to the filter to help clean up and bad stuff that moves thru the filter. Continue to enjoy the new fish but you may find that the ducks might take a liking to some of them when you introduce them to the aviary. So give them areas to hide that the birds cannot get into to catch them. Put more plants in like Pickerel Rush and some water grasses. Also watch out for the water Hyacinth and lettuce. They have the tendency to become evasive and take over the surface of the pond and the fish need to come up for fresh air. What you can do is fashion some wire loops that stay above the water to use for isolating them to keep areas open and uncovered for the fish.
Im excited for the bords going into the aviary! But I do have a question since you put new fishes in your pond, what happened to the bass you put in the other pond where your ducks swim as well? Did they die in that pond? I want to see an update if you can actually fish on the bigger pond where the ducks at.
Just FYI as a general rule fantail goldfish generally get out competed for food by koi and comet goldfish and should not be cohabitaded. J/S Also you probably should quarantine any fish that you get before you put them in the pond. Putting fish from random places together without quarantine is a great way to add diseases to your pond or kill all your fish.
There’s no faintsil goldfish in here just comets. There’s also no point of quarantining fish if they’re the first fish going in the pond, and nobody quarantines pond fish really.
A HUGE HAPPY A ANNIVERSARY TO YOU! 👏👏🎉🎉 There is something au natural about fish in the pond. With thier colors, they certainly add a lovely, calming beauty to it. And when the plant's mature, it will be stunning and quite the oasis to hang out at. Excited for that!!!👍
Good thing to hold off on more fish. Koi and goldfish both grow MASSIVE if given enough time so it's better to let them grow with the pond so the pond can keep up with them especially since they reproduce so fast too. You are going to have so many fry next year XD

They still need to be feed at the junk on the bottom is not enough and what you feed them if the thing to feed will keep them bright and bring out color. Good luck with the pond they can be a pain.
Happy Anniversary to you both and may you be blessed with many more happy years.🎉🥂
I follow a channel who has a pond comparable to yours.
I have enjoyed this whole process. Watching your dreams come to life and all the hard work you put into it...amazing!
Thank you!
All of us are soooo excited! I loved this video, everything is turning out so great. Good job on getting that net over, cant believe you did it seems nearly impossible. It will all be worth it in the end. Im lovingg the aviary.
Happy anniversary!! My husband and I will soon celebrate 38 wonderful years of marriage together. He's the best gift God has given me!!
Hello white house family. I am super excited for the aviary when you guys gonna put birds in there. It's been ages 😅 i am waiting
Congrats on 18yrs of marriage my hubby and I will celebrate 18 yrs of marriage the end of September
Been so cool seeing the Aviary coming together from the very beginning to now can’t wait til you move the other animals in
😊
I believe the plant you placed into the pond with all the ‘roots’ is water hyacinth, very aggressive in the waterways of the south. Good luck with the plants, fish, and pond!!!
Thanks for the info!
Happy Anniversary!!! wishing you two a great day and hope you two get to do something fun together!! maybe go out to dinner by yourselves? Your ponds look great with all the different fish. enjoy
I've been watching your videos since you hatched Bamboo! I love all that you do.
I haven’t watch anything for 2 years and Im so amazed how the aviary has come together and your kids all grown up.. 😭🫶🏼
Awesome ... I can't wait to see the birds go in ... the fish are so pretty
You should add small fish too like guppy’s and plattys they eat mosquito larva and would look great in the pond ecosystem
Happy Anniversary!!! ❤❤Thank you for showing us your beautiful children, life, and farm!! ❤❤ Love watching your videos!! Love from Canada❤
It’s not hair algae
@@SpecogeckoIt's a filamentous algae. You can called it pond moss, string algae, hair algae.
@@tc82 it’s filimentous algae yes
Hi from Australia 🇦🇺
Just a note about fish and humans in a small pond as they don't mix well so it you want to see your fish keep out of the pond and you will see your fish more otherwise they will hide as they are scared when your kiddos keep jumping in the pond but that's just me and it's your pond so you can do whatever you want but that's my advice plus you will need more bottom feeders if you want to keep the algae to a minimum
Another great adventure with my favorite family! What a treat.I love you guys. Thank you for sharing and God bless you all.
It's such a joy when UA-cam brings me back to this channel. Was here early on and occasional get to see an update of your family, life, and homestead.
That gives me chills,so smart, they are so intelligent 😁💥💚
Im excited for the bords going into the aviary!
But I do have a question since you put new fishes in your pond, what happened to the bass you put in the other pond where your ducks swim as well?
Did they die in that pond?
I want to see an update if you can actually fish on the bigger pond where the ducks at.
you should add some snails to clean the pond
You should plant some ornamental trees in the aviary, like some Japanese maples. There is no height in there. Maybe some flowing shrubs. ❤
Cool video!!!!!
Just FYI as a general rule fantail goldfish generally get out competed for food by koi and comet goldfish and should not be cohabitaded. J/S
Also you probably should quarantine any fish that you get before you put them in the pond. Putting fish from random places together without quarantine is a great way to add diseases to your pond or kill all your fish.
There’s no faintsil goldfish in here just comets. There’s also no point of quarantining fish if they’re the first fish going in the pond, and nobody quarantines pond fish really.
@@SpecogeckoThey got two rounds of fish in this video alone because the first ones hid.
Happiest of Anniversaries...love your family so much...I watch from the Oregon Coast and just enjoy watching your Homestead grow...love you all❤❤🎉
A HUGE HAPPY A ANNIVERSARY TO YOU! 👏👏🎉🎉 There is something au natural about fish in the pond. With thier colors, they certainly add a lovely, calming beauty to it. And when the plant's mature, it will be stunning and quite the oasis to hang out at. Excited for that!!!👍
The fish are living their best life in that pond... well I guess until the birds arrive. But everything is coming together so fast. Im excited.
My favorite is the Banded Shark. Really beautiful fish.
Happy 18th anniversary to you both.
Love the fish, they're beautiful.
Happy Anniversary!
Good thing to hold off on more fish. Koi and goldfish both grow MASSIVE if given enough time so it's better to let them grow with the pond so the pond can keep up with them especially since they reproduce so fast too. You are going to have so many fry next year XD
There is eco-friendly plants you can get to help keep the water clean and also there's a breed of shrimp you can buy that you can throw in there.
having huge Cody is so fun, cant wait till the fish start getting big.
