Daniel identifies three key parts of the brain:
- the Visionary
- the Autopilot
- the Reptile.
Each part influences how we make decisions and react to business decisions.
The Reptile brain focuses on survival instincts like fight, flight, freeze, or freak out. It's concerned with avoiding bad situations and is reactive in nature. Relying on this part too much can lead to a negative spiral, where your world becomes centred around avoiding problems rather than creating solutions.
The Autopilot, on the other hand, represents our tendency to continue doing what we've always done. This approach might seem safe, but it can lead to stagnation. In a fast-paced world, being on autopilot means you might get left behind as others move forward with new ideas and innovations.
The Visionary part is where true business growth lies. It's about imagining what's possible, setting ambitious goals, and reverse engineering the future. This mindset involves thinking about where you want your business to be by 2030 and working backwards to make that vision a reality. It's a space of creativity and possibility, where you feel like anything is achievable.
Daniel stresses the importance of steering your business from the Visionary perspective. Making decisions from the Reptile or Autopilot modes can limit your business's potential. The Reptile mode can make your world shrink around problems, while Autopilot can cause your business to stagnate.
To shift into the Visionary mode, Daniel suggests recognising when you're in the Reptile or Autopilot state and actively moving out of it. This might involve taking a walk or finding strategies to re-engage your visionary thinking. Your business depends on you being in this creative and forward-thinking mode.
Additionally, Daniel encourages you to become to Key Person of Influence in your industry so you can protect your business and create more predictable growth.
Your best thinking from five years ago is now your baggage. The world has changed dramatically since then. What was once innovative and effective can now hold you back. It's important to re-evaluate and possibly repackage your offer and services. This doesn't mean discarding your experiences, but rather finding new ways to present, price, and distribute them.

This makes so much sense! My problem is that my reptile pretends to be my visionary and I make decisions from reptile that feel inspired and sure but are actually fear-driven.
Great stuff sir! I've heard of this framed as the Monkey Brain, Robot Brain, & Sage Brain. As you mentioned I've had visionary moments, but often have to intentionally fight the robot brain that wants to keep the status quo. I just finished KPI book and almost done with Oversubscribed. Thank you for the great short input! I quite like the concept of how the brain works and how you can utilize what is important for the business based on that, which is very well described in the book KPI. I noticed there I was a visionary person most of the time and what was holding me back was more the reptile than the autopilot. It can be very persistent, when it wants to be and it is challenging to handle the fight and flight mode in moments of uncertainty.
For 2024 I feel optimistic. I mostly envision a challenging but successful year.😄
