I remember a quote from years ago from an interview. Gilmour was getting derided for not being able to play very fast. He said "I soon realised that I couldn't ever play fast. So instead I decided to play WELL". Says it all! Great analysis too. Leaned a lot!

It's not all about speed. Gilmour feels every note. He's just amazing.

    • @aylbdrmadison1051
      @aylbdrmadison1051 4 роки тому +4

Sometimes it actually is about speed. But most of the time it is not. Sometimes it's about slow, but not even half of the time. Sometimes it is about precision, yet some times it is even about making a sloppy mess.
Why limit any artist to the very narrow emotive constraints of just one or the other?

    • @Katerina9256

I've always been attracted to the players who 'feel' and have a lot of soul, rather than the technically-proficient flying fingers types.

@@aylbdrmadison1051 I wasn't limiting anybody. I was just pointing out that Gilmour's style is refreshing compared to a lot of guitarists you see these days. I enjoy the speed demons as well.

The mark of a true legend is when you describe his/her style as distinctly their own. Very few artists of any kind can be described in that manner. David is absolutely 1 of them. When you hear his guitar work it’s instantly recognizable as David Gilmour. His style is rooted in blues and progressive styles but it isn’t blues or progressive. It’s David Gilmour. Give him a spoon with strings on it and it’s still going to sound like David.

Oh, there is one thing. Having watched the Von Trapped acoustic sessions, David Gilmour played some excellent and faithful covers of Leonard Cohen songs. The interesting part is that when he released his first song (and I believe now an album) in five years, the song sounded like it could have been composed by Cohen. The playing and his age-deepened voice were perfectly complimentary and the song was definitely David's but at the same time he could have been channeling Leonard. It was beautiful!

Excellent analysis Fil....you could do multiple videos on him and I would never get bored. As an artist and a person, he is amazing. He's the only artist who has brought me to tears with his guitar, alone! You FEEL it! As a person who appreciates his fans, I love that he is uploading his work to both of his channels for us! He's even upgraded old videos to high def! This shows who he is as a person while others are banning! Meeting Polly was a beautiful match of souls and magic, with her writing some wonderful lyrics! Thank you, again and continue to do more PF and Gilmour! Maybe even a Guy Pratt, for those who thought that Roger was not replaceable!! Rock! ✌️

Dave is an awesome musician. What I love about him is that he focuses more on playing with feel and creativity than he does on being "overly" technical. Dave can take the simplest scales and work magic with them. The guy just has the touch, and that is even better than technical ability.

Fil, I got to hand it to you. This was a great lesson taught by you using David Gilmour as a vehicle for a master class in playing electric guitar. Many of the things you mentioned I wish my old semi-arthritic hands could do. I think you had as much fun watching as we did. It took three notes before your grin spread over your face showing the pearly whites. Gilmour has that “signature sound” every guitar player strives for. Rory Gallagher, Mark knoffler, Jimmy Page, Johnny Winter and few others were able to match their signature sound. You know in a few notes who is playing guitar. Billy Gibbons, Duane Allman and Derek Trucks are a couple more. I got to see this video when it came out, and inside I was just so overjoyed at Gilmour’s playing. Sadly, this may be very near the end of us seeing him live on tour, like so many of the other greats. Thanks again Fil for aging me on one of my guitar heroes from my misspent youth.

Please please continue to accent your analysis with demonstrations on a guitar! As a player, it makes so much sense and underlines the points you make. Terrific work on an amazing talent. David Gilmour is my all time favourite player in this progressive rock genre.
The last time Pink Floyd were in Vancouver BC in was lucky enough to have seats in the 10th row on the floor. We heard the show mainly through the stage monitors which was excellent sound, and I watched Gilmour almost exclusively. Cheers !

Fil, Love your videos and glad you reviewed David Gilmour. I was lucky to be at his show at Radio City Music Hall on his 2016 tour. As a long time Floyd/Gilmour fan it was great to see him so close as Radio City has a 6000 seat capacity. I have seen him many times over the years at very large venues but I was close enough to see him work his magic on the fretboard. Yes, his voice cracked a few time but he did not miss a note on the Black Strat. I'm happy I got to see him one last time as I think his touring days are over.

Hands down my fav guitarist ever . I can think of many things I am partial to that I would give up just to play one note like David Gilmour .

my partner and i attended the US leg of this tour. driving well over a thousand miles to LA, i knew that i would likely burst into tears when he strapped on his guitar. i was right. i wept from the sheer, overwhelming emotion shared via his instrument that night. always unhurried, always masterful, kind, gentle, and fierce as a fucking tiger when the material called for it. i count myself as very, very blessed to have been a fan of David and his life's work.
to see someone so young, so knowledgable, and so passionate with regard to the responsibility of technique and level of honesty required for real expression- it's delightful to me. thank you, good sir, for your commitment and efforts. i can tell that none of it is easy, and that you choose to do it anyway. someday, i might cry at one of your concerts as well. liked/subscribed.

Before he auctioned off the legendary Black Strat I'm guessing. Thanks for this one. David has to be my absolute favourite guitarist. No other player can seem to elicit emotions from the listener. Perfection!

Wonderful breakdown of David Gilmour's Playing!
As you said it would take years to Teach the Technique of a player such as David Gilmour, but in the short time you had, excellent job👍.
    Take care ♥️🎸👍.

David Gilmour's guitar playing here fills my heart with a kind of beautiful sweet melancholy. In a good way of course. How fascinating to think that he could get such a mysterious sound starting with basically the Major pentatonic shape of C with bending strings. Your explanation of picking techniques was very interesting for me as well. Hmmmm. I wonder if I should start playing more electric guitar again. Anyway, your analysis was amazing and interesting as always.
