I'm a guitarist and I'm so obsessed by this echoes version that I cannot play it differently anymore. Pompeii is the holy grail of Pink Floyd's live performances.
Nick Mason is honestly one of my favorite drummers, sad he's so underrated. His feel is incredible, also those Floyd beats we're way ahead of their time almost hiphopish.
I mean he gets the job done but there are far better drummers out there. There's a reason he had to call Jeff Porcaro to play the drums on mother. He couldn't wrap his head around the simple time signature changes in that song
@@mikebinkowski4615 nah i agree with delicate, nick is more like a ringo player than a bonham player, not technical, but no one else would be a better fit for floyd. its very evident by how much his skill dwindled on the wall, and almost reduced to nothing by the time of momentary lapse and division. he's regained some of his old skill back, but the point still stands in my opinion

Pink Floyd changed my life. Pink Floyd was my dad’s favorite band. He passed away when I was 6 in 2003. When I got older I thought Pink Floyd was popular music and was shocked that everyone didn’t know their music. One of the greatest bands ever
Well in the late sixties and possibly up until the release of DSOM they were what was termed an 'Underground' Band ie flying below the Radar playing at University Halls around the UK. The tracks that are on Live at Pompeii are typical of what they would perform at that those performances to spell bound Audiences of at least a couple of hundred people. The only time that you would hear them on Radio would be on progressive shows such as John peels Top Gear, that started around 10pm on the BBC.
I remember seeing this in the same theater used for Star Wars during the day in 1978. The sound system in that theater was state of the art for its time, of course for Star Wars. Well the owner would play this as a midnight movie. It would be packed, and it was marvelous on that giant screen. I was in the 9th grade back then. Me and my friends would watch the last showing of Star Wars ad then stay for this documentary. It was a mind blowing evening at the movies.
@MacPro8CoreMan There was a theater in Harvard Square that played great double bills in the 70s, and on the weekends they busted out the rock movies, of which "Pompeii" was one. So I've seen it probably a couple dozen times (even made a bootleg audio cassette of it) at least. And yeah, this is one of the great rock jams ever - it starts off so slow, like there is almost nothing there, morphing into chaos, really, before crashing at the end. I could listen to just these 10 minutes for days. Michael does a superb job here too (despite the out of tune stuff lol), really brings tons of enthusiasm and, of course, tons and tons of "gearhead" stuff. You can tell he's really really into it.
The greatness of the Floyd is undeniable... obviously Waters deserves major credit... but the guitar playing from Gilmour is simply orgasmic. Its almost beyond explanation how good he is.

After re-watching and a few of your comments, I realized that moving forward I need to not muscle through with tunings that making play-along impossible. I missed so many opportunities in this video, and it’s because I knew I wasn’t in tune with the band. I can do better and I’ll try harder!!

i was chatting to david gilmours son, matthew, and he told me that the original video was pitched higher. the WHOLE video, interviews and concert footage. the director did back in 72.
On “One of these days” Mason loses a stick and I bet none of you ever noticed because he never missed a beat. Without question this band was made up of the best of each. There are none better, especially a band. Such a shame they fell out with one another but their Live 8 reunion brought tears to my eyes when I saw them all play together again and no, they didn’t lose any of it. It was all there
I loved the studio version of Echoes, then maybe a year or two later I saw the Pompeii movie and thought this was actually the real version of the song, meant to be seen as much as heard. The studio track will have perhaps greater elements of producer influence that I think are still great when it's eyes closed with headphones. But this is the real, raw, way Pink Floyd felt this song should be performed, seen, and listened too.
I first found about it from a comment on Shine on you crazy diamond. At first I didn't really like it... but now echoes is one of my all time fav PF songs, and songs in general!

The bass groove kills me as soon as It kicks in every time I listen to echoes, sooo good. Also, your reactions are the same as mine every time I listen to this, doesn’t matter how many times you listen to it, and you know what’s coming, it’s still like a kid in a candy store reaction when it happens!
I also like the Live in Gdansk version. Different animal, but still. Heartbreaking and touching when you see Gilmour and Wright look at each other and smile. Like they're saying goodbye old friend. Knowing that this is the last time.
I noticed that part too, where instead of the lyrics "inviting and inciting me to rise" were inadvertently just done as "inviting and inviting" and they smiled at each other right after that.
@@daveelson213 It was because of the frames per second being off. the original version of Hungarian Rhapsody by Queen from 1986 was 1 semitone too high because it was shot at 24 fps but put on PAL speed at 25 fps. Likely this is the same issue.
I recall seeing this in a small movie theater back when it was released. The house PA was augmented to accomodate the amazing mix. I remember it was aurally spectacular. Thanks for sharing.
I love how PF is so good at taking one idea, even just one chord or one note, and expanding that idea into full 20 min+ songs that always take you somewhere. its hypnotic the way they sound, and they are the perfect example of "more than the sum of its parts"

Just wanted to say I am a new guitar player, started in June of this year. I have no idea what half the stuff your talking about is, but you are certainly driving me to learn.
What some people may not know is that if you watch the whole movie you are introduced to their older music but you also seeing them working on a little something called Dark Side of the Moon in the studio. I can't imagine they had any idea they would be creating an album that would be on the charts for over 700 weeks.
Pink Floyd's grooving is severely underrated.Shine on you crazy diamond parts VI and ESPECIALLY part VIII are *ridiculously* funky. They get tons of credit for their individual playing, the songs, the concepts, the solos but the sheer thick grooves they could pull off when they wanted to were as good as anyone's.
Love your commentary on this. No one grooves like Floyd, that's right, so many layers to their creativity. A big part of the massive sound in this clip is the amphitheater they are playing in, that's why they chose that location. You miss Gilmour? He's still working, and on tour this summer.

Finally, a Pink Floyd reaction from an intelligent person! I've been a huge Pink Floyd fan since the release of their "Meddle" album in 1971, I was 15 at the time. I was fortunately able to see them twice, and one of those was The Wall Concert in 1980. That was in Uniondale Long Island at the Nassau Coliseum, what an incredible show!! I really appreciate your guitar influenced review, I am also a guitarist and David Gilmour is my favorite of all time! To me, no one plays more melodically, or with more emotion and feel than David Gilmour does. He says more with a single note or a pause, than anyone does playing a million notes a minute imo. I'm sure you noticed, (from the rear view), Gilmours' three 100 watt Hiwatt DR103 amp heads stacked! And those WEM cabinets with Fane Crescendo 100 watt 12" speakers, is the shits man! Some say, that combination, (Hiwatt Dr103 head thru Fane Crescendo speakers), is the core foundational tone of David Gilmour. I think I agree with this to some degree, but I also believe Gilmours' use of 1 and a half,.... 2,.... 2 and a half,.... and sometimes incredibly 3, step bends, is also a defining signature of his tone. I was a gigging guitarist back in the 70s, but today I'm strictly an at home player. I have a couple of LPs and Strats,... and my main amp is a Marshall JCM800 Studio Classic 20 watt head thru a 1-12" cab with a Celestion G12M-65 Creamback speaker.

I have been in a Floyd cover band for years and we have never done this song. I think this song is the one that got Pink Floyd to realize their compositional potential. I have been watching your videos for a long time but when you mentioned that you were going to react to it, I subscribed with bells. Love this channel!
Considering Gilmour had only been in the band for 4 years and he is playing like this just shows you what an accomplished guitar player he was before joining and even more so 4 years later. Knowbody jams like Floyd did.
David Gilmour is the most melodic guitarist in history, and Nick Mason well what can I say. He is an animal on that kit. But it's just incredible the acoustic properties those arenas and ampetheatres have. I visited so many in my time in Germany, I wish I had been born in this era. Seeing this would have been amazing. The greatest band to have ever inspired the masses.

I appreciate you hear the coordination of silence and the making of music silence can make, then the grooves, the bends, fits and starts Floyd does. Fun discussion of the groove and structure of an epic piece, but in the end what does it for me is/are the towering sonics of Gilmour's guitar. From the shimmery, swirling figures in the opening through those apocalyptic chords after the heavy groove section, it's hard to not just swoon. Lots of great guitar players have produced lots of great guitar music, but Gilmour is a world unto himself.
Yeah a lot of those older recordings are a little off in their tuning. I'm not sure if its the tape the video was recorded on or if they actually were out of tune... I don't think Rick would've been out of tune in an electric piano so it must be the speed of the tape. And I do that same movement while I'm playing drums. My knees are bouncing to the beat without actually playing anything and it helps keeps time to a tee. Gilmore loves blending the Lydian and blues scales. Love it. He does that lick a lot
I just discovered this awesome video recently. I'm a fairly new Pink Floyd fan, but I was fortunate enough to see David Gilmour on his solo tour in 2016. The tour came through Chicago. He returned to Pompeii that year to perform in front of an audience. If you get a chance, I recommend checking out any of the concert videos from that concert. He still sounds amazing in his 70s.

So I'm in a Pink Floyd band that plays in various theaters in Canada and we've spent the last while adding Echoes (the full version) to our set list. So much fun to play and we are really killing it! One thing that we've added to really drive up the high points is a lapsteel guitar being played with an Ebow. We give the lapsteel some reverb and distortion and it takes it to a whole other level. Just epic! Thank you for this video ... I always learn something from your takes! Shine on!
I nnever thought I'd love a reactor pausing and talking in the middle of a Pink Floyd song, but you changed that. You are really doing a great job and even though you are pausing it a lot, it all make sense. This is the best reaction of this performance I have ever encountered.
Most of what Dave Gilmour does simply can’t be taught, he’s one of the very few who just has it. Like Hendrix he’s able to tap into the emotions and places most players can’t even fathom.

Instead of being sad at the inevitable.... let's rejoice! Gilmour was pretty much on his last legs when the band wanted a replacement for syd, and he had a connection to syd already, it was the prefect alignment of stars or atoms that somehow managed to bring gilmour to floyd. gilmour couldve easily been a nobody that people rediscover over the years, but he managed to create legendary music with roger and co. rivaling the sales of Michael jackson and acdc. their music will continually influence and be rediscovered, not out of missed opportunities, but because they are good.
i love echoes. I have watched Part 1&2 6xs in a row at one point in my life. To me on this day they were in tune with the universe. Something so ethereal, alchemic, happening here. I've tried so hard to emulate this sound on my modeling amp... i cant figure it out. Are they running through a sound board ... or was there just a central tape running in back catching the acoustics within the amphitheater? You mentioned tape warble and i'm like ... oh god, how did i miss that ?1?!... Love your enthusiasm for the Floyd and the magic they put on tape that day. This song was single handedly got me into Pink Floyd and seriously playing guitar. It’s one of those songs where every part is so incredibly interesting where I’d put my guitar down and say to myself “Those vocal harmonies are beautiful, time to learn those too”. It’s so humbling to see that what I stumbled into on my own was actually a great foundation to learn that music isn’t just about the notes, but the space between notes and that inner groove. Kudos to you sir, you’ve earned my sub 👍

I was lucky enough to see them live at the Hollywood Bowl in support of Meddle. They had quad sound all around the amphitheater and spotlights behind the stage shining over the audience like a kind of transparent ceiling to the stars above. It was epic. Oh, the first half of the concert was the stage debut of Dark Side of the Moon one year before it was released. I can't say it changed my life but I was never the same. I wish you'd been able to comment about the way Gilmore gets the Seagull effect on the next section of the song. One day the Wah Wah got hooked up backwards and the scream of the feedback produced a sound no one had ever heard. David played around with it and created what we hear live and on the record. Ever notice the cover of Meddle is an ear? Michael, you always do a remarkable job. Don't be too tough on yourself for the tuning thing.
Your reactions and enthusiasm towards this masterpiece was a complete mirror image of what i feel about this particular track! Especially when you point out the fact that it is not in 440, because as a guitarist you instinctively want to groove with it, but can't! RIP Richard Wright, such an amazing keyboardist. At this moment, the only band that is remotely in the realm of Floyd is Radiohead. Just my opinion, but thanks for this!
So glad to see this on here. That particular Pink Floyd video is by far my favorite, not just song, but sound. Something that occurs in a place like that with so much history and to play that sequence of sounds just feels right. I get chills every time I watch this. Like these guys are playing this song to some higher form that no longer exists and just letting it ring out into space. That is the best way I can describe this.

One of those rare drummers which preceded triphop and electronic experimental beats without a doubt, so influential.

After re-watching and a few of your comments, I realized that moving forward I need to not muscle through with tunings that making play-along impossible. I missed so many opportunities in this video, and it’s because I knew I wasn’t in tune with the band. I can do better and I’ll try harder!!

On “One of these days” Mason loses a stick and I bet none of you ever noticed because he never missed a beat. Without question this band was made up of the best of each. There are none better, especially a band. Such a shame they fell out with one another but their Live 8 reunion brought tears to my eyes when I saw them all play together again and no, they didn’t lose any of it. It was all there

When I first heard echoes i was thinking " why haven't I heard anyone talk about this masterpiece!?"
I loved the studio version of Echoes, then maybe a year or two later I saw the Pompeii movie and thought this was actually the real version of the song, meant to be seen as much as heard. The studio track will have perhaps greater elements of producer influence that I think are still great when it's eyes closed with headphones. But this is the real, raw, way Pink Floyd felt this song should be performed, seen, and listened too.

I also like the Live in Gdansk version. Different animal, but still. Heartbreaking and touching when you see Gilmour and Wright look at each other and smile. Like they're saying goodbye old friend. Knowing that this is the last time.

It's the speed the tape was uploaded at, there are many dead shows that have this 440 issue as well

@@daveelson213 It was because of the frames per second being off. the original version of Hungarian Rhapsody by Queen from 1986 was 1 semitone too high because it was shot at 24 fps but put on PAL speed at 25 fps. Likely this is the same issue.
I recall seeing this in a small movie theater back when it was released. The house PA was augmented to accomodate the amazing mix. I remember it was aurally spectacular. Thanks for sharing.
Someone could release the Meddle album today and it would still feel fresh and exciting they were really on top of their game during this era
I love how PF is so good at taking one idea, even just one chord or one note, and expanding that idea into full 20 min+ songs that always take you somewhere. its hypnotic the way they sound, and they are the perfect example of "more than the sum of its parts"

Pink Floyd's grooving is severely underrated.Shine on you crazy diamond parts VI and ESPECIALLY part VIII are *ridiculously* funky. They get tons of credit for their individual playing, the songs, the concepts, the solos but the sheer thick grooves they could pull off when they wanted to were as good as anyone's.

Love your commentary on this. No one grooves like Floyd, that's right, so many layers to their creativity. A big part of the massive sound in this clip is the amphitheater they are playing in, that's why they chose that location.

I was fortunately able to see them twice, and one of those was The Wall Concert in 1980. That was in Uniondale Long Island at the Nassau Coliseum, what an incredible show!!
I really appreciate your guitar influenced review, I am also a guitarist and David Gilmour is my favorite of all time! To me, no one plays more melodically, or with more emotion and feel than David Gilmour does. He says more with a single note or a pause, than anyone does playing a million notes a minute imo.
I'm sure you noticed, (from the rear view), Gilmours' three 100 watt Hiwatt DR103 amp heads stacked! And those WEM cabinets with Fane Crescendo 100 watt 12" speakers, is the shits man! Some say, that combination, (Hiwatt Dr103 head thru Fane Crescendo speakers), is the core foundational tone of David Gilmour. I think I agree with this to some degree, but I also believe Gilmours' use of 1 and a half,.... 2,.... 2 and a half,.... and sometimes incredibly 3, step bends, is also a defining signature of his tone.
I was a gigging guitarist back in the 70s, but today I'm strictly an at home player. I have a couple of LPs and Strats,... and my main amp is a Marshall JCM800 Studio Classic 20 watt head thru a 1-12" cab with a Celestion G12M-65 Creamback speaker.
I saw them in concert in 1973 and I never forgot how innovative and awesome they were...while on yellow sunshine...
But this is a 23 min song and this video is 20 min only!!! Man, we need to see more Pink Floyd here!! Thanks Mike!!

David Gilmour is the most melodic guitarist in history, and Nick Mason well what can I say. He is an animal on that kit. But it's just incredible the acoustic properties those arenas and ampetheatres have. I visited so many in my time in Germany, I wish I had been born in this era. Seeing this would have been amazing. The greatest band to have ever inspired the masses.

I appreciate you hear the coordination of silence and the making of music silence can make, then the grooves, the bends, fits and starts Floyd does. Fun discussion of the groove and structure of an epic piece, but in the end what does it for me is/are the towering sonics of Gilmour's guitar. From the shimmery, swirling figures in the opening through those apocalyptic chords after the heavy groove section, it's hard to not just swoon. Lots of great guitar players have produced lots of great guitar music, but Gilmour is a world unto himself.
Yeah a lot of those older recordings are a little off in their tuning. I'm not sure if its the tape the video was recorded on or if they actually were out of tune... I don't think Rick would've been out of tune in an electric piano so it must be the speed of the tape. And I do that same movement while I'm playing drums. My knees are bouncing to the beat without actually playing anything and it helps keeps time to a tee. Gilmore loves blending the Lydian and blues scales. Love it. He does that lick a lot
I just discovered this awesome video recently. I'm a fairly new Pink Floyd fan, but I was fortunate enough to see David Gilmour on his solo tour in 2016. The tour came through Chicago. He returned to Pompeii that year to perform in front of an audience. If you get a chance, I recommend checking out any of the concert videos from that concert. He still sounds amazing in his 70s.

So I'm in a Pink Floyd band that plays in various theaters in Canada and we've spent the last while adding Echoes (the full version) to our set list. So much fun to play and we are really killing it! One thing that we've added to really drive up the high points is a lapsteel guitar being played with an Ebow. We give the lapsteel some reverb and distortion and it takes it to a whole other level. Just epic! Thank you for this video ... I always learn something from your takes! Shine on!

I nnever thought I'd love a reactor pausing and talking in the middle of a Pink Floyd song, but you changed that. You are really doing a great job and even though you are pausing it a lot, it all make sense. This is the best reaction of this performance I have ever encountered.
Most of what Dave Gilmour does simply can’t be taught, he’s one of the very few who just has it. Like Hendrix he’s able to tap into the emotions and places most players can’t even fathom.

Instead of being sad at the inevitable.... let's rejoice! Gilmour was pretty much on his last legs when the band wanted a replacement for syd, and he had a connection to syd already, it was the prefect alignment of stars or atoms that somehow managed to bring gilmour to floyd. gilmour couldve easily been a nobody that people rediscover over the years, but he managed to create legendary music with roger and co. rivaling the sales of Michael jackson and acdc. their music will continually influence and be rediscovered, not out of missed opportunities, but because they are good.

i love echoes. I have watched Part 1&2 6xs in a row at one point in my life. To me on this day they were in tune with the universe. Something so ethereal, alchemic, happening here. I've tried so hard to emulate this sound on my modeling amp... i cant figure it out. Are they running through a sound board ... or was there just a central tape running in back catching the acoustics within the amphitheater? You mentioned tape warble and i'm like ... oh god, how did i miss that ?1?!... Love your enthusiasm for the Floyd and the magic they put on tape that day. I cannot put into words what this version of Echoes means to me and i'll never tire of it. thanks to the chap for mentioning it for review.. and thank you for revisiting

This song was single handedly got me into Pink Floyd and seriously playing guitar. It’s one of those songs where every part is so incredibly interesting where I’d put my guitar down and say to myself “Those vocal harmonies are beautiful, time to learn those too”. It’s so humbling to see that what I stumbled into on my own was actually a great foundation to learn that music isn’t just about the notes, but the space between notes and that inner groove. Kudos to you sir, you’ve earned my sub 👍

I was lucky enough to see them live at the Hollywood Bowl in support of Meddle. They had quad sound all around the amphitheater and spotlights behind the stage shining over the audience like a kind of transparent ceiling to the stars above. It was epic. Oh, the first half of the concert was the stage debut of Dark Side of the Moon one year before it was released. I can't say it changed my life but I was never the same.
I wish you'd been able to comment about the way Gilmore gets the Seagull effect on the next section of the song. One day the Wah Wah got hooked up backwards and the scream of the feedback produced a sound no one had ever heard. David played around with it and created what we hear live and on the record.

Your reactions and enthusiasm towards this masterpiece was a complete mirror image of what i feel about this particular track! Especially when you point out the fact that it is not in 440, because as a guitarist you instinctively want to groove with it, but can't! RIP Richard Wright, such an amazing keyboardist. At this moment, the only band that is remotely in the realm of Floyd is Radiohead. Just my opinion, but thanks for this!

So glad to see this on here. That particular Pink Floyd video is by far my favorite, not just song, but sound. Something that occurs in a place like that with so much history and to play that sequence of sounds just feels right. I get chills every time I watch this. Like these guys are playing this song to some higher form that no longer exists and just letting it ring out into space.
