No one ever accused Kris of being a great singer, but they could definitely accuse him of being one of the best songwriters to put pen to paper. He's in my top 10. Sunday Morning Coming Down is one of the best songs ever written IMO. And I actually preferred Kris singing it. Thanks for analyzing him!
But no one sings a Kris song better than Kris especially "For the Good Times," heart abd soul!
Yes Sunday Morning Coming down a great song and I agree that Kris' version is the best version and I think it is not even close
Marcia Hess OMG, I love For The Good Times! I did like Ray Price's version, but do like Kris's better. Personally, I've always loved Kristofferson's singing. I like voices that aren't perfect.
'
@@kattatude6 Just heard Ray Prices on Sirius..love his version .
Mark Evrard Yes, it's very good! I may have to listen to it now. His and Kris's...😀
I had an uncle, who has since passed, that served with Kris in the 60's. Kris was a helicopter pilot for the US Army. My uncle and Kris exchanged cards every Christmas until Alan passed. Through all of his success, Kris never forgot his service buddies.
Kris once entered a poetry writing contest. He won first ,second and third prize.
Kris has written so many awesome songs . What a great talent. He can do it all
Reminds one of Jeff Lynne
MrMrwilson11 Jeff Lynne has a much better voice though, far more range
@@HamiltonRb I should have been clearer, but the comparison to Lynne was for musical talent. Both these guys can do most everything
MY MAN!!!!! Playing a 12 string was one of his signature sounds!! He is considered one of the BEST writers ever!!!! He singing style is "everyman" cause every man can sing as well as Kris!!!! His music will never die!!!
Yep, Kris personified Persistence! (He was also a Rhodes Scholar.) What got me most about his songwriting was how effortlessly sexy it was: " Take the ribbon from your hair, shake it loose and let it fall..." from Help Me Make It Through the Night and "See, she said, I've put on new stockings just to please you..." from Casey's Last Ride were not blatant at all, but oh, my! Thanks for featuring one of my favorites and telling his amazing story so excellently.
Love Kris! He sings, he is a musician, he has done some great acting and wow, has he written some good songs!! And he was a "Highwayman"!!! ❤️❤️❤️
I saw him live in Cambridge and my little sister saw him in Hyde Park the other week. Fantastic!
I still listen to Kris! New and old he just has something special. One of the very best song writers and a super storyteller!
Thank you for this! One of the most talented people of his time. Most people do not realize that Kris Kristofferson was not only a Rhodes scholar but he attended Pomona and Merton at Oxford, played rugby, and has two bachelors degrees! But he sounds and sings like he is a hick from the country LOL. I am proud to say Kris lives in Texas now 😊
No..Maui and Malibu !
you wish
Was also a Golden Gloves boxer in his younger years.
What I love about this channel is the variety-- you never know what musical genre you're going to get but you always know it's going to be a treat! And the background info is ALWAYS fascinating!
Sabbath, Preist and Thin Lizzy are all here somewhere! Even Band Maid! I do a new video every night, so unless you are watching every night, you've probably missed a few!

@@wingsofpegasus ....Congrats Fil on your sweeping UA-cam popularity!!!!!☝️👌👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤❤❤❤😉
I'm calling you out Jay! First, I'll give you the benefit if the doubt and believe that you were being somewhat facetious. Fil has covered metal extensively -- it's his own preferred genre. Fetish?! I'd call it being well-rounded. Good is good, regardless of genre. And I wouldn't be surprised if some of your fav musicians included these blues and jazz players among their influences. Jay, luv, stick around and be schooled!
Kris (and Johnny Cash) was a wordsmith and storyteller with a poet's soul, along with a gifted music ability. They both had a knack of telling a deep, complex story with simple words in a way that everyone could relate to.
Thanks, Fil because you share Kris' trait most admired by me: enthusiatically appreciating other musicians' talents. It shows in your facial expressions!
thanks for doing this review on Kris -he is under-rated as a singer - most of us would be very happy to sing his songs like he does !
He is not only a great talent but also a very down to earth, nice guy. I met him before a gig and he was a real gentleman.
One of my favorite songwriters. One of the songs I learned to play on the guitar in the 70’. Bobby McGhee never gets old the feeling and changes my mood everytime I hear it; I think all his songs do that to me. Thanks for posting that. I needed to hear that song. Peace out!
My son took me to see Kris about 6 months ago with 3 members of Merle Haggards band The Strangers as his back up band. He also had Jessie Colter come out and sing some back up vocals with him. Kris is truly a class act and a selfless performer!
Hey Fil, really enjoy your format here, really cool. You do a great job
You could call KK a triple threat. Besides singing/playing, and song writing, he was also an actor. A few years before this video he was in a few movies, one where he played the Rubber Duck in a movie named Convoy. But the other movie in the 70's that comes to mind is a little movie called " A Star is Born " that he co stared with Barbara Streisand. Some of the younger viewers may only remember him from his parts on the Blade series of movies. Either way he lived a truly amazing life.
Not that it matters, but I wrote the above before watching any of the video :)
The first person to char the song Me and Bobby McGee was Roger Miller.
Always spot on with your history! Kristofferson is a great song writer.
Super talented guy!; phenomenal song writer, country singer, helicopter pilot and actor. This is a great performance, long before he was killing vampires🤘🏻
😂👍
To all the wonderful comments: for those who haven't listened to much Kris, but know him from films, you gotta listen to his first album; it will blow you away; he is a songwriter's songwriter; he is also the poet laureate of country music (I don't like much country; I like Hank Sr., Hank Snow, Buck Owens, Johnny and Willie, Dolly, but....) Kris was an epiphany for Nashville and brought it out of the past and into the future.
In the summer of 87 or 88 I was driving along when Janis’s version was on the radio and I was getting into it and singing along and when I was stopped at a light I got that feeling someone was watching me... I turned my head around and two guys I would call “refugees from the 60s” and these two Hippies were giving me thumbs up and smiling...
Go English Lit Majors...
FIL, YOU TOTALLY AMAZE ME, AS SOON AS I SAW THE VIDEO ON KRIS, I SAID TO MYSELF, I HAVE A FEW THINGS TO SAY,,THEN AS USUAL YOU SAID ALL OF THE THINGS THAT I WAS GOING TO SAY, HIS EDUCATION, THE MILITARY, ECT. BUT HE CHOSE MUSIC, KEEP THE VIDEOS COMING MAN LOVE THEM, COUSIN FIGEL
I saw him live about 10 years ago at a folk festival in Ottawa. He was 71 then and his voice -- unaided by autotune or anything -- sounded exactly the same as it always has. Seriously. Some artists' voices age obviously... his has not. He told engaging stories before every song... some of which involved Bob Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot... and I grinned because half a year before, I had heard Gordon Lightfoot in concert and he had told the same story. Yeah... Kris is a songwriter's dream. Sunday Morning Coming Down is one of the most powerful story songs I have ever heard... Bobby McGee as well and so many more...
And may I add... at that concert, I saw a whole horde of young teenagers going ape for him... which made me sooooo happy.
Cool!
Good to see Kris on here! Lots of people have no idea he wrote this song.
You did it again Fil. Not where I expected you to go. The fact that Chris was not the best singer but had incredible feeling, made him a phenom. He has written some of the most incredible songs and trusted specific artists to do them. Sunday morning coming down cannot be missed. Incredible artist.
I just realized that I referenced “incredible” at least three times in last post.
I became a Kris Kristofferson fan in college where I was supposed to major in psychology, but more majored in his songwriting career, and the wide constellation of musicians influencing abd supporting him. And he always showcased his band members ' writing, performing as enthusiastically as you do, Fil. Hence Donnie Fritts if Muscle Shoals, Stephen Bruton, John Prine, John Beland, Glen Clarke, and with Rita expanded my whole listening experience and desire to write.
Including the songwriter Donnie Fritts who sadly died on Aug 27th an a couple of years earlier Stephen Bruton. Kris always highlighed his songwriting band mates. I was so lucky to learn about new artists at those concerts. RIP, Stephen Bruton and Donnie Fritts who wrote and collaborated on many Muscle Shoals, Alabama soul hits!
one of my favorite performers thank you Fil
Yes. Great video again.
Always loved Kris' music. He always seems to just enjoy singing so much. Thanks.
Thank you, Fil ! I've admired Kris Kristofferson for many years. Such a prolific songwriter and interesting person. My favorite: Sunday Morning Coming Down, sang by Johnny Cash. Was never a fan of his actual singing...lol. I adore your channel!
Long live the John Norman Howard band :) The song Hellacious Acres still cracks me up. Thanks for the review Fil. Keep up the great work, it is much appreciated.
David Campbell That’s right!! Loved him in a Star is born!!
Sunday Mornin Coming Down. The lyrics are so haunting.
A very good and capable actor, too
Would love you to check out Mickey Newbury who Kris greatly admired. He is the originator of the great song, American Trilogy which Elvis later covered and became an anthem during his live performances. Thanks Fil.
@@Coot Mickey's set on The Old Grey Whistle Test would be a good one for WOP to do. I only came across Mickey's work a couple of years ago and found so many of his songs brought a tear to my eye. "Some Memories are Better Left Alone" just killed me. And "How Many Times" is really up there with the best songs ever written. 👍
@@Coot Thank You. To my mind, Mickey is a genuine Troubadour. When I first listened to his American Trilogy it felt as if I was sitting around a camp fire with him circa 1860's and I thanked the Gods for discovering his music through those who uploaded his songs. We have an English Troubadour who like Mickey, has that special something and his name is Harvey Andrews. He is in his seventies now and does'nt tour much but I was lucky to catch one of his small intimate concerts a few years ago and he sang beautiful songs like a young man in his 20's. His "Song for Phil Ochs" is a particular favourite amongst many gems. I wish I had known that Mickey had done some concerts in London (think there is a CD out there?) Cheers!
@@Coot Hi Mate, Thanks again for all the info on the incomparable Mickey Newbury. I shall certainly have a look around. Cheers!
@@Coot Thank You my Guru of all things Newbury! I'm checking it out now. 🎸
@@Coot Cheers Coot!
Just loving this one Fil, just thoroughly loving this one. 😊
Thank you, Fil, for the background on Kris, opening my eyes to his drive and talent. I never followed him and had no idea he was an accomplished songwriter. Great job!!
We are witnessing a trip on the lane to fame in the making with this format as the pre pilot for a music talk show.
One brick at a time Phil you are working hard. Thanks.
"GET THAT WASP OFF MY SANDWICH"!
Captain Alan I totally agree. I think you need to start having folks in your studio! I can steer a couple your way. I managed to get you a least one patreon who will never tell!

Kris is a great song writer and performer that understands the meaning of persistence.
Need more Fil originals, Jeff in LA USA
Absolutely LOVED this great story about Kris❣💜. I have always loved his work 💛🌻
Fil, you know you’re doing something right when people click like before even watching because they know it’s going to be good.
Yup! That's what i do, too!
Thanks!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd love you to look at "Artbound Presents Studio A" live performance of Kris when he was very young and the songs....what a consummate songwriter/ storyteller he is!! Still touring now! YAY thank yo so much, Fil!!!!!
Kris is truly a Renaissance Man! A genius in scholastics, song writing, and acting. He served in the military and worked like a "regular" guy's job. When he decided to do anything he accomplished it!
Iconic American classic singer songwriter
He just performed live in London with Barbara Streisand this month.
Saw him twice. One just after he cleaned up, and then about a decade ago in a small, intimate setting of a few hundred people. In the latter one, the audience was trying to help him with his timing by gently clapping along. He apologized, saying if I sound off, it’s me, not you. So we all shut up, lol. Such a lovely person.
Absolutely brilliant analysis of Kris Kristofferson! As a young hippie in the early seventies, I was considered weird among my peers for my eclectic taste in music. My record collection pretty much ran the gamut from A to Z-America to Zappa. I had no problem grooving to an album by Savoy Brown, T-Rex or Slade and then follow up with Kristofferson, Dylan or Townes Van Zandt. As a constantly love struck teenager, I found Kris’ lyrics to express so eloquently, everything I felt in my heart but lacked the ability to put into words. When I first heard the album “The Silver Tounged Devil and I”, it was like an epiphany of sorts for me. Thank you, young man for your masterfully in-depth videos across the entire spectrum of musical genres and styles. Not only are you a gifted musician yourself, but you possess the unique ability to be both student and professor simultaneously regarding your subjects! Keep up the fine work as yours are among the most entertaining, insightful and informative videos out there. Well done!
No problem!
Such an amazing songwriter! One of my favorites growing up in the 70’s ! RIP
You're amazing Fil; a music performer and musician and a real music fan; it's so fun enjoying your channel!!!!! This is GREAT!!!!!
Thanks!
Kris was another one of the great storytelling writers from the late 60s - early 70s. 👍👍
Saw him twice in 2018, in Atlanta and Athens, Georgia. Merle Haggard's band the Strangers backed him up. Magnificent shows. A legend.
Fil: Kris Kristofferson not only got a degree in English literature, he got it from Oxford University, on a Rhodes scholarship. True story!
I just thought it deserved mention.
Great video, I enjoy your commentary and variety of reviews
Wasn't KK also a Rhodes scholar in English Lit?
Yes, and turned down teaching English lit at West Point Academy
you bet!
And an Army officer and a helicopter pilot. He flew an Army chopper over the gates of Johnny Cash's mansion to give him a copy of "Sunday Morning Coming Down" and try to interest him in recording it.
The answer to pretty much any question that begins “Wasn’t Kris Kristofferson...” is generally, “yeah, for a little while.”
Yes, he was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford.
A one time in the early 1970's 5 out of the top 10 country songs on the charts were written by Kris.
YES! "In the 1960's Nashville was in darkness. When Kris arrived the lights went on." - Chris Gantry
Very eclectic choice. I like it! He was too cool for school back then... very sad about his family. wild.
Blast from thee Past!. I thank thee for sharing all...
AND because I never shut up, Fil you really do a fabulous "Free Falling" with Tom surely appreciating your tribute!
I love the big band, but I prefer to hear him just playing his guitar and singing. He is just a giant talent. Thanks for featuring him. Gosh, I always learn something new from you.
Not a fan of country music; however, some artists transcend their own genre. Kris Kristofferson is one of those artists. Excellent songwriter with a great background story. And once again your analyses across the genres are truly laudable. Great job!
Just had to listen one more time to this and to your analysis
Great analysis, Fil!!!! omg speaking of writing songs that other artists could put their stamp on..."Casey's Last Ride" John Denver cover is amazing (Artbound Presents Studio A: Kris Kristofferson is on UA-cam and it's amazing; just Kris, Donny Fritz, Billy Swan. You can really hear his guitar. Thank you so much for this I've been waiting so long!!!!!!!!!! xoxoxoxo
Such an amazing talent and it just goes to show you if you're willing to sacrifice everything and go for your dream sometimes they really do come true♡
Love his music and drive forward to meet his goals. Kris was earned the US Army Ranger Tab. His record with Rita is what I have listened to over and over. Good work Fil.
Wow, Fil's discussion of Kris is chock full of so much fascinating information! Thank you, sir.
you might consider reacting to Kris & Barbara Streisand duet "Evergreen" from "A Star Is Born" -- Babs are her finest & Kris trying to distract her!!!!! The song won an Oscar for Best Original Song & she won the Best Actress Oscar that year 1976 - That song is mesmerizing & the chemistry between them is spot on!!!! Her ability to hold that long note at the end is pure Barbara - a voice that is truly a gift!!!! The duet won a Golden Globe -
Kris is multi-talented, so impressive! I also love the fact that he is a Rhodes Scholar. He makes this fellow Texan very proud. Thanks Fil, you provided interesting facts that I did not know.
My favorite Kris Kristofferson vocal was "Loving Her was Easier than Anything I'll Ever Do Again."
This is definitely one of the most intriguing videos with the backdrop bio of Kris. I never new all those things about him.
Great job again Fil !!! 👍👍
Silver Tongued Devil and I is Kris' second album and is amazing, as is his first album, just called "Kristofferson" and re-released as "Me & Bobbie McGee" later. Both albums, every song is pure gold. He is timeless. In addition he's a superb human being, always standing up for human rights throughout his life.
Great as usual Fil. I hope you will gain immense recognition and win awards for your excellent presentations. Very informative and enthusiastic. I think you are in a class by yourself. The only thing I know of that is similar was the "Mixed Bag" radio program hosted by Pete Fornatale in the US. You might like to do an analysis of that show.
Such a cool guy ❤ And a very smart 🤓 guy too!
Excellent! I always knew he wrote the song from way back in my teem years. But I don't think I've ever heard him sing it like this.
Wow!!!! Very impressed by your research !!!
Enjoy your videos very much. How about looking up the performance in 1972 of Gordon Lightfoot televised by the BBC? It's a complete concert, right here on UA-cam with Lightfoot, Rick Haynes on Bass, and Red Shea on lead acoustic guitar. Just the three of them with no reverb, no "bells and whistles" sounding like an entire ORCHESTRA. Superb rhythm by Lightfoot finger picking a Martin 6 string, and majestic rhythm on his trusty Gibson 12 string. Lightfoot's voice sounds like a priceless Cello. . . Superb, tasteful supporting lines by Red Shea, and possibly the greatest Bass playing in the world by Rick Haynes. Keep up the good work. I have yet to see one of your videos that I haven't gotten a great deal of pleasure from. P.S. I had the HONOR of having Rick play Bass on 4 cuts of my new CD. He has been playing with Lightfoot for over 50 years, and is the true foundation of the "Lightfoot Sound." Thanks, and all the best to you. . .. Buddy :-) PPS. Check our a cut called 'Your Love's Return" (a song he wrote in honor of Stephen Foster.) I promise you will be ASTOUNDED !
Not bad for a movie star & song writer 😎🎸 kinda lost on this one Fil... but Kris had or is still having one hell of a long career(s)... WOW ! Thank-you for the endless variety of the music on this channel & I might not love all of it but it's still great to see and here all of this different music 😎🤘
I'm still pushing my request for....The Band playing The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down & The Weight(w/The Staples Sisters) from The Last Waltz concert ! This band really deserves a view... for a group of unbelievable talent they never get the respect and airtime they should ! Please give them a play when you can fit them in.... lots of young people need to discover The Band and older folk rediscover this awesome band.... take The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down , how many songs can you think of that are about the civil war ! It's a great song and history lesson all in one 😉 & The Weight well that speaks for itself ☺ Thank you Fil for taking the time to read this and hope you can play their video (s) soon. 😎
Nice job! You practically cover everything. Everything except Van der Graaf Generator - but I expect you'll get to them sometime soon. Great story telling by Kris ....and by you!
Awesome video buddy !!!!
Kris Is a Badass Dude 😎
Thanks Fil Yer The Man
🤘 ROCK
I screamed out loud when i saw Kris Kristoffersen, was next in line for an analysis, i love that man! He is not only a great singer, song writer, but a great actor, loved him in a 'Star Is Born' with Barbra Streisand, great movie! The story of Janis Joplin was so interesting, Janis was interesting, i met her and 'Big Brother And The Holding Company', and Grace Slick, 'The Jefferson Airplane', Stevie Nicks, 'Fleet Wood Mac', Jim Morrison and The Doors, whilst on tour with JH. I especially love his sexy singing voice, his voice period! He wrote many songs for many famous Artists.... I hope he stays with us for many years to come, so sad his parents disowned him for doing what he loved, 'Music'.. Look where it got him in life, i hope they got over it @ some point... Excellent Analysis, Filip.....
Thanks Paula!
@@wingsofpegasus You're welcome
Enjoyed your background information on kris k. He played in A Stat Is Born with Barbara Streisand, a role she wanted for Elvis. I have yet to see the movie. I wonder how his relationship is with his family?
Phil, I like your content. Although you bring up stories I already know, I always learn more thanks to your research.
Kris is a very talented guy. He was Rhodes scholar, helicopter pilot, and wrote some very beautiful songs. Janis Joplin made a great hit with her cover of Me and Bobby Mgee. Sunday morning coming down by Johnny Cash and Help me make it thru the night by Sammy Smith.
Nice to see the guy who wrote it play it.
Dig the shirt man and great vid
Another outlaw "favourite". I actually do prefer Janis Joplin 's version over Kris's. The backstory is always so interesting to me bc I like trivia.
Janet Baker unfortunately this wasn’t his best performance of his song.
regarding trivia - I heard somewhere that the real Bobbie McGee (female) was a secretary or receptionist at Kris' record company... but I don't know if they had a thing or if he just liked the name as a song element
Yes, Janis took his song and blew it away! But Kris wrote it.
I esp. would love to hear you analyse "Best of All Possible Worlds" for the lyrics/ humor/ and also arrangement. Everyone should enjoy John Denver's cover of Kris' "Casey's Last Ride;" I love hearing Kris sing it; so poignant. But hearing Denver's golden tenor sing it; opens up a new dimension as well.
Great video Fil! I know you’ve done Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead analysis videos in the past and I think it’d be cool to see your thoughts on rhythm guitarist Bob Weir’s playing style. Keep up the good work
Rhodes Scholar, Oil Rig worker, master musician and song writer....WTF? Truly a unique individual.
Thank you Fil, This is my wife favorite song, she does not like loud Music but when this song come up for some reason for those 2 minutes something all Bets are off Music never get loud enough Perhaps because we came into to the US in 1972 traveling in our old Chevy Van , even though we are Country music fan Her favorite version is Janis and also Pink's AOL version, my favorite . that was the first time she watch you, she also like you way of analyzing music and performances; Thank you
Not a guitar to critique, but watch the video of Kris and Rita Coolidge doing a duet of "help me make it through the night". Much emotion.
Lord that one is amazing!!! It's so real; I don't see how they could sing it together when the emotion was so obviously very high.
I have more respect and give credit to those artist like Kris Kristofferson who made a name for themselves by working for it. excellent analysis and rundown and homework on Kris. I don't think his many talents and service are fully recognize by his fans. thanks again Fil and keep Rockin' through the years!
His fans know! I'm one. There are many groups of Kris fans and on social media, too. We all love him so dearly and realize what a gift he is to this world.
Probably no better lyrics or melody ever laid down in his genre.💞
Well, "cleanest dirty shirt" is pretty stupendous 😎
We love our wild eyed Southern Boys here in Dixie! They'll never take our pride away from us.
Another great review Fil as always. We need that driving force as wanna be musicians.
In 1975, I was a 16 yr girl going to the movies with a friend. We decided to see if we could get into an R rated movie. We were sold the tickets to a movie starring Kris .
As we left after the movie, my friend said the R rated James Bond film she'd seen was nothing like what we'd just watched. A week later, the movie was rated X, and pulled from neighborhood theaters. So, I always think of him ,fondly, without any clothes.

Thanks Fil !!!... I did not know his upbringing, what got him into country music or the story about Johnny Cash. What I know of Kris was the era of outlaw country music that my dad listen to when I was growing up...aka The Highwaymen! Of course I knew he wrote Me and Bobby McGee and my favorite version of that track is Janis'! I haven't seen the original A Star is Born in years!....✌❤🤘
@Brad zybola I didn't know Elvis wanted that role? I do know he wanted to be taken seriously as an actor so that does make sense he would want that type of role.

Songwriting was definitely his forte. Didn't know about his early years. Thanks for the info.
To all those that say Kris was not a great vocalist,
"Sunday Morning Coming Down and Why Me Lord"
No ONE could possibly sing those better. No one.
Meh...I prefer Cash's version of Sunday Morning Coming Down.
The Silver-Tongued Devil and I
Have you heard Elvis, with JD Sumner and The Stamps do, Why Me, Lord? Awesome! The sad thing with Krist, is. To be so full of talent, singer, a song writer, lyricyst, actor probably one of the most intelligent by far of most of the entertainers in the past century..... He never gained that pedestal of super stardom. It's kinda like, why not? The women loved him.... Smarts were there????? He was a Highwayman..... Super group! But look at the names he had to share a bill with? All MVPs!!
Aw man!!! One of my in favorite songs in the world... Sunday Morning... Brilliant!
