What about ghe pop cap, what kept me away from AOE DE was the pop cap
Berries, trees, should be changed man. Dnt like it
AOE2DE Romans will now be added too ranked after a balance pass.
awesome! i really wanted them to be ported
AOE1's setting/units/aesthetic but with the gamefeel slickness of AOE2 is moderately exciting.
Moderately, AOE's time period was far more exciting with far bigger countries (other then Mongols) and far more variety.
@@jjnxyz4368 bigger countries than Ancient Persia, Macedonia or Rome?
It's a good job from age devs, however there is one valid complaint: People who bought aoeDE should get at least a discount on return of rome, they now have to buy aoe2DE and the DLC for a game in theory they should have. And I'm talking as someone who dosen't own aoeDE
was there a discount for aoe2 DE for HD owners? cause thats the same kind of thing that happened
nope @@lazthegreat10
I bought AOE 1 DE but the game is daed now. Played some AOE 2 campaign long ago.
Just casually found out the existence of this Return to Rome and bought the bundle (AOE 2 DE + RtR) on Steam, just only $9 so I don't mind :D
Another important thing about trade (unless it's changed since November's beta) is that trade now works like it does in AoE2. AoE1 had trade via trade ships, but it did this weird thing involving docks building up an amount of trade value over time and loading it on to the ship slowly, as well as you selecting which resource you're exchanging for gold. That's been removed.
That's too bad, I found that a very unique mechanic in AoE1
Ah I never checked the trade ships - thanks for sharing! They're used so infrequently that I forgot lol :)
Or what's more likely, the devs just didn't port this mechanic.
"it did this weird thing" - funnily enough, that's NOT weird, what the game does now is weird. Back then there were no gameplay conventions cos it was literally the first game in the series, and RTS' in general were still pretty new. So they based it on the real world, cos in the real world docks DO have limited stores in their warehouses and so will take time to stock up again. They also don't magically generate gold without you having actually traded anything. They dropped both elements in AoE 2 as it didn't make for fun gameplay, but the AoE 2 (and onwards) way of doing it is actually the less realistic i.e. weirder way of doing it. Indeed it's just magic.
@@ArawnOfAnnwn "less realistic" doesn't mean "weirder", though.
Obviously when one says "weird" in this context it means from a gameplay standpoint; AoE1 did it in a more realistic way and ended up feeling very weird from a gameplay perspective.
AoE2 chose a more "gamey" system but it's makes much more sense for a game.
Some of my most favorite historic timelines are ancient Greece, Egypt and Norse especially due to Age of Mythology and its legacy it left behind, so this will be such a treat of a DLC. Very excited!
I hope it will be a success so they can add northern civilizations. I would imagine the 3 would be:
Germanic, Celtic, and Norse
@@Tamamo-no-Bae That would be super cool too, agreed!
@@Tamamo-no-Bae i hope too that this DLC sells well and they start to support finally AoE1* with RoR-
There is a mod for old AoE version named 5th Legacy, adding a lot of civs, like celts for example and even Troy and Atlanteans, it's a pretty cool mod
Return of Rome does override a couple of the AoE2 terrains, but in general I agree it looks a lot more like AoE2.
Maybe some more of the AoE1DE terrains and graphics can be modded in as replacements.
Indeed. I feel a lot of nostalgia for the berry bushes, tree and fish graphics as well as the terrain floor. It's just what I've had as a kid and I do want it to feel at least similar.
I would expect aoe1 graphics mods to be developed soon.
@@Michael_Brock
Hopefully! 🙂
AoE4 is also updating and introducing even more unique units for existing civs now. AoE franchise is really updating their games. AoE4 is insanely fun and well designed, fitting modern gaming
oh nice, where to go too find the new unique units?
@@annaairahala9462 they're in the PUP. Assuming they're well-received, they'll be in the main game in the Season 5 update, probably late next month or early July.
@@JimCullen Aoe IV Season 4 ends mid June.
@@Staklihen yeah so the season 5 update will be a little while after that, either late June or early July.
Is it possible to pause in AoE 4 like you did in AoE 2? As in, pause but still be able to give commands in paused mode. I don't remember that option when I tried that game.
This is the best video so far on the new DLC, very well done!
Thank you!
This is what I wanted from AOE 1 DE but sadly never got.. Hopefully some people will port all the campaigns to this new engine and hopefully some great custom ones like "Rise and Fall of the Seleucids" by Mr. Decius Flavius
From what the devs said, all the AoE1DE campaigns will be ported too. So no worries about that!
@@LordVader1094 I actually heard the opposite, which is what I mentioned in the video. Do you have a source of that? I'd really like all campaigns to be ported too, but I don't think they are.
@@AgeofNoob
I guess some missions of the campaigns would have a drastically changed balance. Some missions would be extremely simple while others might be close to impossible due to the new unit pathing and the way more intelligent and aggressive AoE 2 AI.
Though some missions in AoE DE had that problem, too. I remember I've had quite some fun with the ressource-cheating and unlimited APM AIs of AoE 1 DE that just refused to go down no matter what you did even when they ran out of space to build.
@@LordVader1094 That's not the case, unfortunately. Devs have confirmed that the DLC comes with 3 new campaigns. The original campaigns are not ported over. However, I firmly believe it won't be long before we got fan-made/custom campaigns that are ports of the OG Age 1 campaigns.
@@AgeofNoob maybe they mean that it will be ported at a later date?
Just porting aoe1 into aoe2 was what I thought they should of done with the aoe1 definitive edition. Pathing in aoe1 so bad replaying it hurt my nostalgia
And yet they failed to deliver the old feeling by not including the original graphics and scaling modes.
I don't like the berry bushes and trees in this dlc though.
This should be changed......😢
@@marjiman_rts
I feel the same. The original berry bushes and trees are burnt in my memories. I could probably draw the berry bushes with accuracy just using my memory.
@@jonasklose6472 yeah. It has this wild feeling to it. ❤️
This one looks cultivated.😂😂😂
Kills the whole theme.
@@jonasklose6472 how you find the price? Any chances of it going down later?
I think , 4 dollar would be more justified.
It's 5.19 dollars in India.
"It's a great DLC that I think will be positively received by the community."
Return of Rome released Steam reviews: Mixed
Well that sadly didn't age well.
The Devs added the ranked for the Romans 3 hours ago.
I really hope they port the campaigns over... I'm not like you guys, didn;t have internet growing up but the AOE ROR campaigns were my childhood! I replayed the trial version from the windows 98 cd at least a hundred times.
So excited for this DLC
good video but i have to speak a word in favour of old pathing in rts games.
now aoe1 might be an exception, but in many old rts games like starcraft 1, comand and conquer and Dune i would not want superhuman pathfinding like in starcraft 2 where units flow like water at all.
more realistic clunky pathfinding doesn't just give big army a feeling of real weight to it, but it also servers as a very natural anti-snowballing mechanic. Afterall, the bigger the army the slower the army will move and the natural spacing that occurs during a "march" creates a very natural defenders advantage that can set up in a good line while the enemy arrives one by one to the battlefield
I don't like the fluid pathfindings either. that is why post napoleon total war games feel bad to me. but ao2 still feels great with the way the units go into formation and patrol into each other
Great overview sir! Keep it up!
If you want to do more content for AoE1 would be nice to see balance changes made. I noticed +1 pierce armor on scouts. But not sure what else they changed.
Time to inSec some scouts into TCs my friend
Scouts were kind of expensive and not the most useful originally. I'm guessing it's too help counter the now more mobile archers
@@RennieAsh They actually nerfed scout cost from 90 food to 100 food actually, so they're even more expensive now :D
I wish they were willing to reassess the tech tree a bit more.
Especially in terms of upgrades being in blizzare places.
Upgrades like logistics could have been moved to the barracks so they would have been extremely clear that this upgrade effects barracks units.
Same with nobility moving to the stable.
The tower upgrades could have been moved to the government centre (with watch tower and small wall coming for free upon tool age) and weapon/armor upgrades could have been moved into a new building and the market economic upgrades moved to the storage pit and granary.
All the upgrades would be in a much more logical place and make the game much more accessible to newcomers especially to AoE2 players.
Really high quality video, thanks mate
It has been announced that all AoE 1 campaigns will be ported to the DLC with patches step by step. Very exciting news
Very nice vid, thanks so much! I was watching last night and missed that it's a DLC instead of a mod, how nice!
Slightly disappointed that original campaigns are not there, but still cant wait to play Age of Empires on Xbox! Soundtrack alone worths it.
hopefully they add original campaigns at a later date, im sure its a lot of work to remake all of them with balance changes etc.
Most importantly, because its on the AoE2 engine, it opens up the possibility for future AoE1 content. New civs, units, and tech. I remember reading somewhere that the reason AoE1:DE didn't get anything akin to a live service is because the engine was very hard to work with due to its age. In any case... Stone to Imperial age Persians when?? Id love a combined game mode where we play all the way from cavemen to castles.
That would be the dream
i agree, that would be epic
@@klop3re
I'm so excited for this DLC! That's basically a dream come true ever since I've played Age of Empires II way back when I was a child! Always dreamt about having formations in AoE1
the best change is probably that villagers can now finally walk on farms!! :D
I rarely comment on YT videos, but for this one, I overcame my lethargy and am here to say that the review is amazing. You have covered all the important bases, cleared up confusions and made the best ROR review in the "for dummies" style. Absolutely loved it.
Thank you for the kind words!
Loving AoE. One of my most and longest played game in my childhood. Thats so nostalgic to have both in one game now.
Just hope they expand that, too. Like new civs and campagnes. Would be so awesome.
Lovely overview! Now, if they end up adding UUs, UTs, and new Civs THEN I'll most definitely pick it up!
I can't wait for this!!! I preordered it weeks ago 😍
The buildings are so small!
Or is it that the units are too big?
I hope someone makes a mod to make their sizes similar to AoE2
By the looks of it they simply kept the the original scale of the buildings from AoE1. Might have been nice if they had scaled them up to match what they are like in 2, but I suppose to the devs this was a line they didn't want to cross.
Beautifully made video, and you have touched on all of the important points. Teşekkürler kardeşim, başarıların daim olsun
Selam kardeşim bu oyunun sizde linki varmı paylaşırmısınız benimle
I really hope that the assets and campaigns will be ported through community mods. The campaigns were the only reason for me why I kept playing AoE 1 DE that long despite it's been lacking in pathing, formations, unit control as well as a satisfying and balanced late game.
For all who don't know: The late game of AoE 1 heavily favored sone civs and it was mostly mass-priducing the same cost-effective units without having viable counters.
It is absolutely possible, but it will take work. Someone will probably make a scenario converter or something at some point.
The camps don't have triggers though.
@@Seth9809
They do have triggers. But only very basic ones. For example: Destroy building, bring X to Y, capture relics (and bring them somewhere), capture holy sites, build X, collect Y.
But if course no in-game triggers and events and few adaptations for the AI.
It's not as big as AoE2, but some things are there. Of course it's still sad that the triggers and scripts of AoE2 DE weren't improved to the state of Warcraft 3. This would have created some amazing possibilities.
Hey Age of Noob, did u get an answer as to whether the old campaigns will be ported ?
So I'm confused, the devs on the Xbox stream said they'd be porting the original campaigns too. Why do you say it won't be ported? Are they planning on porting it at a later date?
What about the soundtrack? I know each civ is getting it's own theme, but do we also get the rest of the remade music from AoE1: DE or is the AoE2: DE OST going to play when playing RoR?
Great video! My favourite Age game so far is Age of Empires: Definitive Edition. I have all the achis on Steam. Didn't manage to play through the campaigns of 2 & 3 yet. This DLC looks really cool! A reason to return to Rome again. :)
excited for the dlc :) pre-ordered the dlc as soon as i learned of it :) played age of empires since i was a kid :) one of my fav RTS games ever :) great video man :)
Thank you! Hope you enjoy the DLC
Great review, thanks! I was a big fan of AOE1 in the late 90's: have AOE:DE and will give this DLC a try!
It makes a lot of sense to harmonize both AOEs into 1 platform, which will hopefully unify the fragmented AOE communities, making it more vibrant!
Great changes, the only thing additionall thing I'd like to see changed would be ruins & artifacts actually doing something beyond the 2000 victory condition. Cuz in most gamemodes they're just kinda pointless.
Make them generate gold like relics in AoE II or something.
So, do you still have to manually reseed farms like the original or does it work like AoE2:DE?
No, farms are auto-seeded.
Is the Aoe1 soundtrack ported over aswell?
Best video on this yet. But I want the AOE1 part to get a more thorough brush up. Putting it on the AoE2 engine is a start. But I want unique units and techs to make the civs more distinct. And I want AOE1 campaigns
That little Skyrim cameo though
I have been playing AoE since 1999, and it looks awesome, I really like the AoE2 innovations being ported to the original, honestly, I would not find it that hard to adjust. It would also be awesome that the Romans are ported to AoE2, as you said, the Huns were introduced to AoE2: The Conquerors, so it would not be that off putting, one thing I would change is the Byzantines, particularly the language, since the Byzantines spoke medieval Greek, they were basically Greek speaking Romans, which should further cement the idea that the Romans could be included. Overall, I am liking how the game is turning out, and I hope to play it soon, the Devs have done a good job, I am confident that Return of Rome will be awesome.
Just want to clarify before my opponents see E=Mc2 in the chat. Do the aoe1 cheat codes work in the aoe2 version of the game, or only in the return to rome version?
Funnily enough, AoE2 cheats work within ROR, but not the opposite. For example, both "Reveal Map/No Fog" as well as "Marco/Polo" work in ROR, even though they're the same cheat. As mentioned though, E=MC2 Trooper or other AoE1 cheats don't work in the normal AoE2 mode.
@@AgeofNoob interesting, thanks for the reply!
@@calebvangelder1101 Np!
Haven’t played since the 90s jumped right into this feels exactly the same.
Are these aspects incorporated into scenario editor/creator?
They also added Theocracy to the Temple, if you check the tech tree
Since it will be possible to garrison villagers inside the TC, will the TC also shoot or is it "only" for a protection purpose?
I heard that it's only protection, no returning fire.
@@natee7683 That would be great. Having protection as an extra strategic option while not having the option to go full turtle sounds great.
Age of Noob, you forgot that markets can exchange resources now.
Does trade also not cost resources anymore?
I love the Fez :D
I really think they should add the trees and resources from Age 1 DE. Age 2 already has many varieties of trees, so having more doesn't break anything, and would only add variety, which never hurts. Alternates to the other Resources would also be a great thing to have, because again variety is a good thing.
I think this looks amazing. In fact I'd take it even further and just completely AoEII-ify AoE. I always liked ancient civilizations more than medieval ones, but easthetically AoE looks cooler and feels somehow... bigger. The scale of the buildings for example is very literal way in which it does that. Bigger sprite differentes between units and buildings of all kinds. Things feel a bit more complex, give us fuller trees and unit lists for all civilizations and I'm sold. Spirit of the Law has a great video on a mod that overhauls water units in a Rome at War AoEII mode. Bring that in as well!
Maybe even some special game mode that allows you to rush from the stone age to imperial age evolving in the middle 😁
Romans(AOE2) are a mixed bag of game balance. One thing is that they have no answer to Gunpowder and any gunpower civ reaching imperial age would start turn the game around. However the cheap heat seeking scorpion units is perhaps the most broken unit in the game right now. Even a small mass will destroy armies in ways normal scorpions can't and with the charge attack cavalry available, onagers attempting to counter the scorpions will quickly get destroyed.
Fantástica cobertura!
But about all updated stuff... they missed the oppertunity to give AoE 1 civs Unique Units and Techs a part that is elemental to AoE2 and would be a huge saler for Return fo Rome. And that really disappoints me
Yeah this dlc feels very lazy to be honest, its just age of empires 2 with age of empires 1 skin
Is the soundtrack re-used? AOE I soundtrack is soooo great in building atmosphere. Also sounds! I hope this will be the nostalgia trip I hoped for.
Dude If They try to make Aoe1 De useless
They Should Have Made More Campaign civ
(cuz they only make 3 😔)
or port the existing AoE1 campaigns into the DLC
@@alvinite9164 I thought they were? They said as much, at least.
The Hell did i Just Said
They Add 2 More Campaigns Bruhhhhhh
I hope there will be support for scripting events and creating custom units in scenario editor.
aoe 1 and 2 music hits just right every time
did they put the diferent languedges for each civ or is still "Rogan" for everyone?
I think I like most of those changes except maybe garrisoning villagers and trade carts creating gold out of nothing. I also hope they make it look a bit more like AOE1, but that's not a big deal.
Two questions: are random maps really random, or do they give each player a certain amounts of elephants, berries etc. closeby?
Can you eat the lions and alligators?
I wonder if the aoe1 pros will move to this now. I hope they do because I it would bring the community together
I actually doubt this. The balance changes are too big. It feels like a different game. If they don't at least port the rules and the tech tree 1:1, I see pro players and audiences refuse it.
By the way, I mostly like the changes though I don't think garrisoning villagers should be a thing. It makes them way more protected and so rush strategies will fail plus you don't need to have that many units for base defense. Especially with the new importance of walls.
@@jonasklose6472 AoE2 DE is an entirely different game from AoC. Long as all the balance changes and QoL are considered good it's still possible they could switch. There is a D3 mode for AoE1 as well.
Garrison is weird it's only for TC and towers but no extra arrows. It does make base defense safer, but when games end in tool age in the majority of games for 1v1 it might not be bad change.
@@jordian2538
Of course AoE 1/2 (DE) are completely different. Though you forget that most of the improvements were already included in the original AoE II AoK Release and people just didn't want to switch. So why would they switch now?
I like AoE2 (DE) a lit more but I think this port is just too far off to appeal to the die-hard AoE1 fans/pros.
Well most of Pro form Vn and China go for the special rule which the new Aoe have so they might try to go in but do they stay it on other hand like Chimsedinang so try go for the aoe 4 but leave quickly after that.
yes i dont think so. its more age 2 than age 1
Im excited! I never got to play AoE 1 but now with AoE 2 and this expansion on console ill finally be able to play it(or a form of the 1st game)! A shame the campaigns wont make it over 😞
Tbh the thing I'm super hype for is the balance changes and especially the AoE2 trade mechanics being brought into AoE1 gameplay.
That's gonna hopefully stop the best Chariot Archer civ just cleaning up all the time.
Disappointed they aren't porting over the campaigns. Maybe if things go well they will consider some remaking and rebalancing the old campaigns that take into account the new mechanics. Or even make some new ones.
Or even make some new civs for the Ancient and Classical world timeline.
I saw a proposed Germania civ. Has that been scrapped?
Can anyone tell me what the difference is between this and the definitive edition for AoE1? Or do I have to buy aoe2 def edition + dlc to be able to now play the dlc, its not in aoe1 def edition right? Thanks!
You'll need to buy the base game of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition as well as the Rise of Rome DLC to play this game mode. I believe buying the whole AoE2 bundle comes with a discount as well, so look into that too. :)
i think one huge reason that people seem to always forget for why people prefer the older games over newer ones is being able to play on LAN
I’m new to the AOE series, in fact I have bought or played any of them yet. I’m confused by the number of editions out there , which edition is this DLC for? aoe2 , aoe2 hd, aoe2 de …?
If you want to play Age of Empires II, then you should own the base game of Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition.
I suggest you start with this first. Then, if you would like to play some of the additional DLC civs, you can purchase those accordingly. But the base game is more than enough to get started. Enjoy!
Played the OG and play AoE1De a bit more than I play AoE2DE inspite of having both. I am actually really excited for this!
This is so good, I love it 😍
im coming from aoe3 to try this out, never really played aoe2, but you said this dlc is a gamemode? This wont be playable in most online games?
the idea to introduce factions from the first part of the age of empires is certainly very interesting. although I don’t quite understand how, for example, the Sumerians and the Portuguese or the Assyrians and the Ottomans can meet on the battlefield.
will they be avaible in the aoe2 editor
Hey guys I'm considering buying the Return of Rome DLC for AOE2. I just want to know if the Rise of Rome expansion is going to be coming to Return of Rome DLC as an update/campaign? That's the main campaign that I'm interested in.
Did they change the Aldric campaign to have the actual Roman civ now?
Yes, same with Attila.
I remember my childhood, getting sick and my dad bought me a crate of cd games, thats how i learned of the red alert franchise, aoe 1 and aoe 2 and also company of heroes, and the settlers 2, loved all these games and it turned me into an rts enjoyer
Has the path finding been improved??
So they won’t be bringing all the campaigns from AOE one to rise of Rome? It’ll just have the few new campaigns they mentioned?
Yo I want to know where I could watch that vietnamese guy stream this when it's comming out?
Only thing I wish they had put in this version was a castle type building and unique unit. Otherwise its a nice dlc as I love the ancient empires setting. Nice that we can have Huns v Romans now in AOE2
Will we ever have the old campagins, but with triggers so they don't suck?
omg at 6:25 there is the music from skyrim
What about aoe 1 de mods? Can we download them for return to rome dlc?
This is absolutely what AoE DE should have been. The original game desperately needed so many of these quality of life updates. Adding garrisoning and pathing are game changers, literally.
I hope they add a Return of Rome ranked ladder. So far on preview streams I have seen there is no ranked mode? Not even a greyed out one?
There will be a ladder for the AoE 1 civs! :)
My only complaints are the size of the buildings (make them 20% larger) and the variety of houses. They only have 1 house sprite.
And the wonders.
I'd like every civilization would had his own wonder... Maybe in the future.
Can the romans be played on the skirmish against AOE2 factions by any chance.
Love the nod to the Vietnamese. Beautiful country. Also, I think I am getting this for the scythe chariot nostalgia.
I do wish they will at some point add all the campaine stuff.
I never had AOE 2 DE, bought this game only for the DLC, im AOE 1 player, love to see AOE1 in AOE2 content,
It'll be interesting to see such treatment being given to AOE2 and AOE3 using AOE4's engine. But I don't know
Might be heresy to the AOE2 guys but I actually prefer the classic period vibe and history to the middle ages. The glory of Rome Greece and all that. Really excited for this, and hoping some big AOE2 players do some competitive multiplayer in it, love to see Yo or Viper tearing it up in the classical period. Vietnam getting it's own civ is incredibly awesome too!
its official at this point Rome will be available for ranked. And their unique siege ship will be available for other ancient empires that don't have access to cannon galleon (like the huns)
Need to create walls cheapers like in stone Age to defend against rushes. Because before reaching tool age you can get rush by 2 different colors.
is there music from the "elder scrolls"?
Not surprised they didn't include the campaigns. Half the most memorable missions were included in later dlc for AOE 2. Like Caesar and the pirates.
Age 2 really? What is this 1990? lol haha kidding, great video as always Age of noob, so happy to know how well Age 2 is doing, and I have high expectations for the future of Age 4, would be so cool to see the game thriving for years and years to come as it's precedesor has done.
It is a good time to be an AoE fan :)
AoE 2 feels way more developed, balanced and deep to me. I've played AoE 4 DE in beta, but I will only ever play it's campaigns and not much more. I'm not even interested in AoE4 season content.
Damnit, I wanted the campaigns brought over
7:53
I'm NOT okay with the Huns being in the game, glad you asked.
I'm not even okay with the Celts, Franks, Teutons or Goths. These civs existed exclusively during the early Dark Ages, and quite frankly, the Dark Age in Age of Empires isn't even a real age, it's a buffer-age to set up your basic economy at the first 5 minutes of the game.
All the fighting and proper gameplay happens in the Castle and Imperial Ages. Many civs already have literal gunpowder weapons in the Castle age. Meaning this game realistically is meant to be played in the 14th-16th centuries.
The Celts should simply be called Gaels, as they only represent Scotland and Ireland (Wales is more represented by the Britons).
The Goths are better represented by Spaniards (Visigoths) or Italians (Ostrogoths)
The Franks should simply be called French, like in AOE4.
The Teutons should be either Germans, or Holy Roman Empire like in AOE4.
