Romans:''We should not have any problems with Huns...... uhoh .....We might have problems with Huns.'' 451 AD
There's something so enchanting to me about Viper opening up the civ tab to see what his faction does at the start of the game. One of us
Viper, when he's pocket: "it's the flank's responsibility to wall for the pocket so he can boom."
Viper, when he's flank: 11:29
Are you sure Viper is Flank... he's booming?
Viper when he's flank: I identify as pocket!
Those mass scorps melting all those pointy bois... So satisfying
As much as people think they're broken, just remember the Centurion costs a lot, specially in gold (85)
e
They're broken if you let them get to the late game comp. Biggest weakness is that they're pretty damn lacking atleast uopto early or mid castle from my experience. HOWEVER, they're broken on a whole different level on water maps, those galleys annihilate any and all navy the enemy can throw at you.
@@spinyslasher6586 One civ's navy has to win.
Mamelukes are also 85g, but you only need 1 centurion to buff legionaries, and mamelukes only take real advantage of their 3 range in like groups of 10-15. 5 centurions are like 8 boyars, as in they're still effective even if you only have a few.
They also have 3 base pierce armor in castle age which is nuts, gonna melt xbows
Finally! you took your sweet time playing romans
Scorpions 30 gold, have ballistics AND fire 33% faster, in castle age. Teamed with Khmer for range and Celts for creation speed 😮
I have been waiting so long to see Viper play Romans. I'm glad to finally see it happen, and hear his thoughts on them.
Been waiting for a video like this for a long time. Cheers Caesar
I like it that civs have their unique features. Romans have their centurion commanders improve infantry fighting and scorpions with ballistics. Very nice. I don't like the charge attack on centurion on top of that (that's a Burgundian thing) and their fast training time (can't have many commanders on the battlefield. Also I don't like the better scorpions being cheaper. Civ bonussus should make cetain units cheaper or stronger, not both imo.
I watched this game live, and now i'm watching the vod. Can't get enough viper content haha
Roman M@a in feudal are pretty insane if you get the armour upgrade. it means they only take 1 damage from villagers and only 2 damage from archers with fletching (like malians m@a with the def upgrade)
Coming nerf for sure
What is "metaa"?
This was great! I look forward to you using Rome more often.. hopefully in the Rage Forest!
Historically accurate Roman Victory!
The good thing about the charge attack is that it lets you take out a few units quickly, which then snowballs the fight, much better than having slightly more attack overall.
Poe Dameron voice: "Somehow, the Caesar has returned..."
* Imagines a single player campaign where the Romans rise up once more to take Italy, then the world.
One guy said in chat it's 30C in UK.. and said awful lol. It's 38C here without heat index in Louisiana. The heat index is 41C.
If cyan had deleted the wall, green could have raided Viper with his 60 Paladins before he got those scoprions ready.
Teutons 2.0
Legionaires are like fast Teutonic Knights!
I think from a balancing perspective it is much easier to nerf, than to buff. So generally new civs get to be "stronger" first, so you can check exactly what is the issue with newer game mechanics.
Yeah, they're gonna get nerfed like craaaaazy. Their scorpions are at least 370% better than default, even discounting ballistics. Their Legionaries beat Jaguar Warriors 1v1 with a Centurion nearby. Their ships are nearly unstoppable. AND they have a very good eco bonus.
Romans dont get suplies legioners are expensive
@@kaponeboss8914 Hardly matters when they get +4 infantry damage, 33% faster attack, more hp, and +1/1 armor, all while their armor techs cost half as much.
@@demiserofd and you need to upgrade ceturion aswell none elite dont give 33 it gives 25%
They will get nerfed if their WR is good, 1 of 2 civs which scorp is good, who cares legionaries beat jaguar wariors, their ships lack extra range that's balancing them in a way, their Eco is good but not nearly enough to even call it very strong
Nerf to the dam hell
I think it may be good to let scorpions benefit from ballistics for every civs, since they are still underused in most cases
I disagree, Scorpians aren't good in 1v1, but they are extremely pop efficient and have very few counters when massed. I think the castle age Scorpion needs a buff. Not Imp
@@sevenpolar3483 castle age scorpions are better imo, they are really good vs archers and they are one of the only counters to Cav archer they are def viable in castle age. They also are harder to be microed against and it is cheaper.
@@mertkaganyldrm3330 they are worse than mangonels against archers, or cav archers, but more importantly, they are expensive and slow meaning they struggle to take map control or harm your opponents eco. In the castle age trading well in fights is nice but not as important as expanding your economy or slowing down your opponents.
@@sevenpolar3483 Right now the roll of scorpions in 1v1 castle age is limited on making one or two to defend harassing archers. I think with ballistics and maybe cost/speed adjustment, scorpions might become a better transition at late castle age if the opponent insist on massing xbow and skirm.
@@Mini31241 I agree, but I worry that ballistics will make them more oppressive in late imp when Halbs + scorps is one of the most cost effective solutions to Cav, Archer, Infantry and Elephant armies.
My brother and i (out of pure happenstance) played roman+khmer, and boy oh boy, every black forest we play now we’ve never looked back
I love when Viper gaslights himself into thinking he forgot an upgrade.
I see a lake, you see infinite food, we are not the same
I did the heavylifting for him that game :p
10:15 yes, they were very effishent (Viper when playing the forgotten campaign of the Vikings)
11:35 5 minutes ago you complained that they dont wall. There is this chat function, however.
I have gone back to do more campaign missions on Hard, now there's Romans in the actual campaign, bloody hell they are just too good, I need to dump trash units completely into the base of Romans to over whelm them , they are too strong
Uh, I'm missing a tad bit of context but why are his docks a shipwreck and rock? I'm assuming that's a mod, right?
Yes to help fishbooming, u place traps easier near Dock when model is not blocking
Yeah its a mod, he wanted the dock to lock smaller to better fishboom.
Wuttt. Did Viper say nach did a good rush.. never thought I would see that day.
《Battle of the Catalaunian Plains》😂
Romans lack bombard canon, I think a good siege onager micro can counter them.
And the civs without siege onager will just lose. Not to mention that the centurions can easily mop up seige onager after the scorpions melt the halbs
@@Redd_Nebula regular onagers still annihilate scorpions. Siege onager isn't required and oftentimes too expensive to get anyways.
Never played as Roman’s? Absolute plebery.
Even Viper forgets to pick up Bloodlines
I have an idea to further flush out the Romans uniqueness. Give the legionaries a javelin attack that recharges overtime. Tune the throwing speed for the javelin so that fast units can close the gap that’s putting the legionaries at a disadvantage but for units that are slow enough, they take the javelin attack as well as the first melee engagement attack giving the legionary one free hit
this is a sick idea.
Nice idea but pretty complicated. Meaning it would be hard to make it work reliably and balance it properly. Anyways I think the charge attack is supposed to represent that early boost that a javelin throw would achieve
The water bonus is definitely something they have to change before releasing in ranked games. Their galley destroys everything in castle age. Other than that, they are probably fine
their m@a in feudal if you get scale mail armour are super annpying to deal with
@@faultier3215 that's still a 100 food investment, though. The Malians get the same effect for free.
@@faultier3215 Against slow units such as m@a, you just need to micro your units. Their only peak is castle age longswords with +4/4 armor from upgrades, but I guess there are plenty of ways to deal with these slow units, especially if they don't get supply.
@@tiancheng8549 My friend I am 1600+ right now. let me tell you that a vil doing 1 damage to a man at arm is kinda OP. Those things are much stronger in Feudal then in Castle age
@@Jinger4Jesus Its not the same effect. those things get +2/+2, malians get for free 0/+1 and max out on +1/+2
How do you get there without clicking on the fish traps? ( like 13:24 )
It does cross my mind that they are broken... but Forgotten Empires have done a pretty good job balancing so I guess with one or two patches they will be good but not broken.
But it does feel strange to have Italians, Romans, Sicilians on the same game... doesn't feel right historically
what's with the tc clicking madness though?
I have been enjoying this civ. The Centurion area of effect for the Legionaries is massive. Spirit of the Law said it is TWELVE (12) tiles! Haven't really had much luck with the scorpions as of yet.
They let me down on Team Islands though 11, their transport ships max out at carrying 10 units :(
It´s 12 for the elite version, normal one has 10 tiles of range
You should try em on the water.
Viper, you never got bloodlines!
Centurions are almost strictly better Paladins. Significantly more expensive and from the castle though, so I don't think they're unbalanced.
What makes Romans so strong is their ballistae (scorpions) IMO.
Scorpions with ballistics gg
Hei Viper. Don't you get your mods removed after every update?
Huns didn't beat Romans, but Chase the ones who beat the Romans. It will be fun to see them against goth.
I want to see romans vs a good siege civ cause of siegeonagers
Yo how to download this game
Ballistas and The Viper, what can go wrong?
why do they keep cows/sheep out of the town center and bring them in in order ?
Dear Mr. Viper, I heard you complaining about the heat... I think this is really interesting (maybe just for me but yeah) Since you are a Norwegian, how are you feeling about our German Summer? And I really want to move to Norway (I am German) one day and actually the heat in the summer is one of my many reasons why I love Norway way more than Germany.
Also, since you can compare, how would you describe the winter-situation? Is it really that problematic with sunlight in the winter in Norway?
(I am talking about the general south of Norway when I think of it.)
Just curious as I am myself sitting in my 30°+ apartment directly below the roof and knowing I that even if I wanted to do PC stuff (creating 3d-content for my channel) it would be close to impossible to concentrate... and man, we only have mid-june :(
Thank you for your time! :)
I had part of my childhood in Finland some 20 years ago, and now I’m stuck in the same place as you. A room under a german rooftop where the temperature inside are the same as outside. Boy I miss those cool summers 😢
@@zmaciek111 Yeah... I really dont feel like I can take it for much longer... and as we all know it gets worse every year ;(
@@SvensWorkshop Biking outside is a fun alternative if its available to you. A real shame we don't live in Korea though where "PC Bang's" (PC internet cafes) are both widely accessible, clean and cheap. I don't know if you're as unlucky as me to have the room directed at the sun for the entirety of the day. Sadly, it will still get worse before it gets better. But at least we don't have to deal with very strong negative temperatures in the winter. I remember one winter in Finland; it was so cold the trees were starting to crack. Something in the range of -40C. We lived on top a fairly large hill, so the wind/temp was always just that bit colder than elsewhere.
@@zmaciek111 We used to have cool summers too. I live in Netherlands and when I was young, temperatures over 25 degrees happened only a few weeks and over 30 degrees a few days a year. Now temperatures go up to 40 every summer...Climate change has hit pretty hard in this part of Europe, it is heating up 3x faster than global average according to the statistics.
@@TheSuperappelflap Lived in Holland for almost twenty years prior to Germany. Lost count how long I awaited the elfstedentocht. Damn climate change couldn’t at least have allowed that 😂
What's that Dock skin?
bro, I played campaign 4 of the Huns and Roman army appearance almost destroyed all the my horse and cavl archer wi
th 3 castles supported. I’m still figure out how the Huns won the battle
Hey viper could you link the name of the mod that puts a pig over the boar I’d love to use it. Thanks!
I believe that is one of AnneHK's mods. Something like "boar pointer" or "eye-catching symbol over boars".
new civs always op on release to sell more..
Well to be fair, this was never intended to be balanced as it wasnt made for ranked play.
Ave, true to Caesar
Hey Viper! Why don't you play with the mod that displays the tech tree and the mod that shows the name of the civs next to their icons? These 2 mods would make it easier for us to understand what's happening and what are the possibilities of gameplay while watching, as we don't all know as much as you the game in all its wonderful details. Just a suggestion, awesome content as always!
sneaky snake
I like the piggy boar icons
Feels like burgundians when they came out
27:46
Make new dlc civs op to boost sales and then nerf it later seems like a good money making tactic haha
Viper, any1 going to play AoE1 in AoE2, now what it's in aoe2, or it's still dead, even with gates now ?
25:55 the proper original Roman pronunciation is "kenturion" this is brilliantly shown in the Netflix show 'Barbarians' (ua-cam.com/video/ojC-zTXSAsY/v-deo.html for example), however the modern ecclesiastical pronunciation is more akin to Italian and uses the soft ''centurion"
They did make a big mistake with the naming though, centurions are supposed to be infantry, cavalry were referred to as eques (derived from equus, horse, plural equites) and they were usually hired mercenaries or troops from the auxiliari, soldiers from conquered nations fighting on the flanks of the roman infantry. the romans didnt really use cavalry much themselves, only wealthy men could afford to have a horse and a squire during their service in the army. they relied entirely on armored heavy infantry squares and artillery. horse were used by messengers. so its really weird to see a centurion on a horse. their function was to lead their cohort of infantry, they didnt need horse and they would just have been a liability in a melee
Bad pathing will beat this composition super easily
do a team game with romans again but with japanese in team.
are romans available in competitive?
They plan to release them in the next patch.
so dumb how the romans got a unique cavalry unit, especially because centurions didn't fight mounted to begin with lol
Latin only has hard K, for C. They don't have a soft c.
They probably did in the later years. Latin is after all how Italian, French and Spanish (amongst many other) formed, which do have that sound.
correct obkervation, kir.
16:15 LOL i want to sit in my underwear and play as well
Game starts at 23 minutes
I don't know if the civ is necessarily broken but giving scorpions such a massive discount as a civ bonus whilst also firing faster, more accurately, and with less minimum range, and getting siege engineers, is just crazy to me. If a unit gets a discount I don't think it should also have any stat buffs which make it better than generic. Especially a 60% gold discount. It'a like giving Poles the last cav armour and stirrups.
The only reason the crazy scorpions won't be hugely impactful is because scorpions in general are situational. But making one civ's scorpions so strong will make it harder to balance generic scorpions in the future
Amazing game. But was i the only one bothered by the fact that he forgot bloodlines?
chinise scorpion have +5 attack...
that ballistics thing is too much
Centurion is the modern pronunciation but the Romans would've pronounced it kenturio
Ballistics on a unit that shoots piercing bolts sounds very broken to me imo, even if they didnt had the other scorpion bonuses their scorpions would be top tier still. Though their archery range options are lackluster so idk
yeah, their Archery Range is awful. They rely on Scorpions to fulfill that role in their composition. It's kind of like being stuck with Elephant Archers, because they are so slow.
It's just OK. It's like a +30% damage output because they don't miss, but they're still just scorpions. Not the highest attack, very slow and fragile, requires mass.
@@misteral9045 except that massing them isn't actually that hard considering how much cheaper they are for the romans.
@@IschmarVI Except they don't train faster and 1 mango shot can still obliterate like 2-4 at a time. There's reasonable counterplay, and ballistics doesn't change the dynamics of scorp vs mango because mangos weren't dodging shots in the first place.
Edit: wow you're really searching for attention eh?
roma invicta
Damn, purple is kind of dumb 🤦♂️ the way u tried to help him…
Does not matter if Romans are actually good, OP, balanced, whatever. They will nerf them just so people feel better. Its more safe for the Developers to nerf them and THEN buff them again if Romans winrate is down.
yknow you could continue saying centurion with a hard c and say it's the latin pronunciation
No more ROR game ?
Buff britons
Another civ expansion? Game gets too complicated for casual players with all these civ expansions. You can't even disable them as in HD version.
romans wtf? where bizans ???
A WOMAN?! His father was a Woman! Who was he...?
omg will someone please create a Biggus Dickus campaign?
