    there's one extra caveat with placing the gates the wrong way: you gain nothing from it if you have stone towers on the walls, since those need to be pointing where you want to fire and also have stairs down to their back anyway

      It's usually better to make two or even three towers in a u shape section. Effectively a mini square inside ur wall.
      I know it's lame but I use stone walls quite a lot as the English if it's late game imperial, cos we have very little else. Walls and longbows. I build frixkkn motorways round the map sometimes. So u get kind of inventive

I make like sky motorways for longbow blobs and use towers both sides cos they do boiling oil plus springald and can be built from top of wall ... I do it when I have about 3 or 4 relics and if I have 32 farms with emplacements.. you don't need hardly anyone on gold cos u can amass 10k food in minutes and just trade but you're also on 1k gold per min passive anyway.. no vills.. anyway back to walls .. cos I twist and turn them and make junctions I ended up putting towers both sides cos I have like huge amounts of stone.. and I can spare like 20 villagers in a pull cos I don't really need them (I.e. don't just delete them, since English don't really need huge vills on gold, just wall the hell out of the enemy base and let them die being useful) but what you found is by twisting and turning and towering both left and right and putting longbows on the walls you can do insane damage and as part of this I realised 3 towers with boiling oil is INCREDIBLY hard to seige down.. I.e. just close the loop ans make a square of wall and tower the edges.. with 20 or 30 vills it goes up crazy fast and its very very quick motorway building. You can cross the screen in like almost a minute.. you need a gazillion in stone but as I say, some civs don't need many on gold

    You would lock your gates so your own units don't go outside and fight, I guess.
    I don't know if you noticed, but the gate has a little door behind the gate that is the entrance to the adjacent wall. Rotate the camera and zoom in, you'll see the little door.
    This little door is also visible on the other side of the wall TOWER. That means that if you place your wall towers facing inwards, the door is facing outwards, and thus enemy units can walk up onto your walls too. If your tower is facing outwards (the correct way) then your units can use the door from inside your base to get up on the wall and fire down.
    Might be worth making a short about because the little door is the indicator here and the logic applies to both.

    - Gates auto-lock for when enemy is too close. (in this case, maybe auto-open for your units)
    - When opened, anyone can enter.
    - Walking on top of gatehouse by enemy gives them control over the gate. Your units and/or allies recaptures the gate to the owner.

    what you could do is something what was called a killing field for medieval castles.
    Namely have an outer wall and upon entering trough the outer gate, you would end up in a small walled area, where there was a second gate. If the outher gate is pointed outwards, your opponent can't mount the wall without siege tower in AoE4 and if then the inner gate is pointed inwards, the enemy can not get in the town once they are on the walls.

    something i've been thinking about regarding walls, when and where do you really want to build walls?
    for example walls keep cavalry and other raiding units out, but outposts are pretty good for saving your villagers and also adds a static form of defense that can fire back which walls don't do on their own, so i don't know which is really more beneficial than the other.
    the other thing is walling next to forests or around forests, if you wall next to some trees you don't need to build as long of a wall, but that means you don't want to chop at those trees either later because it would ruin your wall.
    and what do you do, do you make a rudimentary walling close around your base and then wall in new sections for further building expansions later on? or do you wall further away from your base so you have room to expand within but make it more difficult simply because you made the wall too far away and way too big to defend several points of the walls at the same time?
    i'm really not sure, but i'm gonna try walling the unit producing buildings and farms and let wood and gold and stone be protected by outposts and keeps because it feels like those things can protect themselves without the need of a wall, sure the villagers will be more prone to raiding but that's just how it is gonna be in some cases, but some key walls in some chokes could help i guess in some instances if there are good opportunities for that.
    but yeah, walls, they are obviously useful, but when and where?

    • @Ennocb
      @Ennocb 2 роки тому +1

      Securing a backwards woodline from raids. You don't need to fully wall around, just deny certain paths to redirect foes
      to where your defenses/units are.
      Delhi used to wall sacred sites with military units early on maintain control for a little longer.
      I have used short wall segments to sneakily deny/reroute enemy trade in the late game to starve them of gold while applying pressure.

    1. There are lots of times when I don't want an AI ally to path through a certain way or attack yet.
    2. A certain route can be temporarily made unsafe for trade units and created units headed to their rally point. Locking gates can be a good way to redirect traffic
    Also, you didn't cover wall towers. Like gates, the side you put them on makes a difference and they are used to man walls, though I don't know what all enemy units can do

    Hey Dude, thanks for the vid!
    Although, there is one thing you might consider placing walls inwards.
    People like to build two or more gates close to each other to get their armies through quicker. If that is the case, you want them all to face the same way.
    Because as soon as you have two gates close to each other facing different directions, the wall is basically useless against enemy infantry. They can enter through the gate facing inwards, climb the wall and exit the gate facing outwards to get inside the walls.

    • @AgeofNoob

      But there's an easy solution to that - if you delete the nearby wall foundations, the gate foundation should auto-delete itself as well. This is much more intuitive than have to instruct your villagers twice every time you want to build a wall section with a gate on it. :)

    If you build a stone tower it will make a door behind the walls on the opposite side that footmen can use to go up and down the walls

    Locking stops your military from leaving the walls. Otherwise they will pursue beyond the walls to continue attacking. Locking allows for intelligent unit pathing, pathing you wouldn’t get by standing ground.

    Personally I've only fought with the A.I, but walls are weak enough to just send a bunch of rams to knock it down and wreak havoc on the structures inside with the rams. I've never found a situation where it's better to use a siege tower instead of rams so far.

    • @AgeofNoob

    • @ArawnOfAnnwn
      @ArawnOfAnnwn 2 роки тому +3

      How does the game benefit from removing them? Even if they're niche, you're just raining on the plays of the few who use them for no real benefit to anyone else. Also walls themselves aren't meta atm, but that may change in future. And if it does Siege Towers may start seeing some more use than currently. They certainly have a lot more use here than in AoE 2, as there are advantages to getting your ranged units on top of a wall (a mechanic that AoE 2 doesn't have at all).

    • @NamelocTheBard
      @NamelocTheBard 2 роки тому +2

      They really need to give them a mechanic to allow ranged units to fire from them. There's absolutely a purpose, which is delivering infantry quickly to a position where they can harass the defender (which is very effective when you micro properly), but most players (myself included) are much more comfortable with the tried and true method of busting a hole in the wall.
