Sensible advise. I agree. Always bring paper maps and make sure you know how to read them. I'd also recommend, having two different electronic map apps. In case there is an issue with one brand, and/or error in the maps, then you use the other for comparison and/or back-up.

Paper is good! Far too many people just simply trust GPS these days. 🙂👍

I purchased the Hema 4wd app for $99 10 years ago. Since then they have updated the app a few times adding new and updated maps including the Vic high country series. I have also purchased through memory map the nsw and Vic topo maps licenses. I think at one stage I needed to pay $30 or so bucks for the updated nsw topo maps. This is all run on my ipad air and I have an external Bluetooth gps. Spent many weeks in the high country now and have never lost the gps lock, the external gps is mostly used by pilots, apparently the built in gps in the cellular ipad isn’t very good and loses position fixes once you go over a certain speed.
Yes there are major issues with the actual hema vic high country maps, camp sites where sometimes hundreds of meters further down the road than the map suggested, tracks it had on the map didn’t exist and tracks led onto private property through locked gates but I highly rate the app.

Thanks very much for your comments! Hema are generally fantastic, but I felt a little let down on this last trip, hence my video. I now travel with 3 x GPS units, a variety of mapping apps and of course, paper maps. That said, I still expect to occasionally get lost, but that is half the fun! 😂😂

Ive never used electronic maps, a good paper map and a rough idea where you are will win ever time.

True! I think they both have their place in the world. But we really shouldn’t rely too much on technology. 🙂👍

Love your videos mate. Rooftop paper maps are super detailed for both driving and points of interest, located at servos, 4x4 retailers (arb) and general stores in the areas. I use Android auto but I study maps before and during trips so have a good idea. The king however is the Hema High Country Atlas. Ratings are inconsistent (use newtracs for up to date) but it's bound and covers everything. Glad your loving the VHC, hope to see you out there one day. Mick

where I overland in the Patagonia there is no cell signal and often no GPS signal due to mountains and deep valleys. I take detailed sat map screenshots on my phone before I head out. Paper maps for the areas are all but worthless. Worst case scenario, I still know how to use that compass on the dash. Never go anywhere, you are not prepared to walk out of; although pulling an FJ would suck. No way I am leaving my FJ behind. 😆

Patagonia! Wow, you are so lucky - I love that region and hope to visit it one day. Beautiful part of the world. 🙂👍

Oh Arty don’t get me started on Hema maps😡I love to hate them😂still sadly using the old version as u r I wished they never just dumped the support for them not that there so called support was any good.and even for sadly there where never uptodate reliable but yea still love the platform.I used to do weigh points but found plotting a rout even better and waypoints for camps or points of interest!the other two I use a lot apart from paper maps is Newtracs which gives a much better track grading system amd Gaia maps as a backup and never let me down unlike the Hx-1that most stays home nowadays
