59-year-old Tom Watson All Televised Shots + Playoff Vs. Cink Heartbreaking 2009 British Open Final

  • Ten years ago at Turnberry, one of The Open’s most decorated golfers came within a whisker of making history as Tom Watson fell agonizingly short at the last in his unlikely plight to become the oldest man to win a major. The clock showing 26-years since the five-time Champion Golfer last lifted one of golf’s big four, the then 59-year-old proved that age is really just a number, coming within eight feet of glory and what would have been one in the face for the skeptics.
Entering the tournament at 1500-1 to lift the Claret Jug, Watson’s opening 18 certainly raised eyebrows - he carded a bogey-free 65 to sit one shot off the lead at -5 - but was merely seen as a happy fluke, impossible to sustain across four days of exhaustive links golf.
Playing in the final pairing, the 59-year-old had the whole course in front of him, the weather clearing to allow several to make a charge.
He watched the scoreboard as Lee Westwood moved into contention with an eagle on seven, while Stewart Cink crept up the standings to pile on the pressure.
But still, heading onto the back nine, Watson was there - not flailing from his troublesome hip, nor flagging from 63 holes of gruelling golf, but keeping steady in the hunt for history. This video is under Fair Use:

Never wanted a player to make it more. Damn. But you just saw the spirit leave him when he over hit on 18. He choked. The magnitude of what he was about to do got to him. Human. Kind of a bummer for Cink. He plays so well, wins his only major, and he's the villain.

@Rick Lewis Maybe, yeah. I'm 59. It just looked like he'd run out of gas: both the chip and putt looked so half-hearted. Maybe the well had just run dry at that point. At 59, you just don't have the same resilience and optimism. After the shot went over the green, it just looked like the fight left him. A younger Watson would have been on the attack--chip at 17 in 82 US Open prime example. It felt like when the 8 iron went over the green, it was like it confirmed something in his mind: this is impossible; I don't belong here. It just looked that way to me. And feeling like an imposter--at least in my own experience--is the origin of choking.

Definitely wasn't a choke, being 59 you don't have the touch in your fingers as when you're you're young its why putting goes first. What a great performance though just unbelievable really.

Can anyone else still believe that Tom Watson was one club selection away from winning the British Open at age 59? He would have been the oldest player ever to win a major by 13 years... I always remembered the botched club selection at 18 but I didn't remember how many putts burned the edge of the hole for him that day. Not only should he have won - he could have won by 6...

I wouldn't call it a botched selection. Just bounced hard and ran through.

He played the exact same shot all week and it always went middle of the green. It was just bad luck that caused it. The only thing I would question is the third shot. It would have been better to take a pitching wedge rather than putting it over a ridge, but I'm guessing he didn't want to risk fluffing the shot under pressure. ua-cam.com/video/9JV8v9ZoQS0/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TrumpTurnberry

@@larrybud Jack, a guy who would know, said it wasn't a missed club selection. He told Tom that he hit the right club but just ONE foot too far. Had he hit it one foot shorter, it would have stopped close to the hole for an easy two putt. really a bad break or bounce, as you said.

Was never a big Watson fan back in the 70's and 80's, because my favorite players were Jack Nicklaus, Ben Crenshaw and Freddy Couples. Despite not being a fan of Watson, despite trying to copy his 1-2 tempo in HS, I was pulling for him like he was my favorite player. That 3 putt on the hole was tough to watch, but the odds were not with Watson, given how shaky his stroke was on shorter putts.

That approach to 18 looked perfect; back in '77 , he hit a 7 iron approach to within two feet for birdie, to beat Nicklaus there. At first this shot looked better

Looking back at this I think Tom just ran out of gas. He certainly played good enough to win and probably should have, but Cink was in the right place at the right time and being younger certainly didn't hurt his chances. Cink won, but Tom should of won.

First time iv watched it since 2009 an still as gutted now as i felt when he didn't manage to quit seal the deal, but still a legend and one of the greatest players of all time so that legacy remains. One less club at the last ? Should have chipped it from the apren at 18 ? Never mind 5 times open champion ✴️ from MJK Wales August 2024 age 62 🦅⚪✴️

I remember some idiot on BBC Radio(I think it was Iain Carter) crowning Watson the winner after his tee shot on the 18th and talking as if it was literally impossible for him to make anything worse than par.
Talk about putting the mockers on it!

I would have really rooted for Watson had it not been for the way he backstabbed Gary McCord in 1994 and had him fired as an announcer at the Masters because Tom didn't like Gary's comment that "the greens were slick as bikini wax".
After Tom wrote the letter asking that McCord be fired for that remark he ran into McCord and pretended as if they were buddies still. At that time Gary had not yet been told he was fired so he treated Watson as the "friend" he thought he was.
