As someone who actually played Lord of the rings online recently, if you get it to work its not too bad at all and great for a more casual lotr world loving audience. Sadly there is the fact that getting all leveling content will cost you easilly 200 dollars + and the endgame having a lot of pay to win features. To me its a B tier MMO. pretty good, but major flaws being a big dealbreaker. This all making it impossible for me to recomend to new players.
The developers are talking about completely redoing the monetization in Lord of the Rings Online. They know it's bad. And frankly I mean they were just kind of figuring out what a free-to-play system even meant in the west since they were the ones basically figuring it out.

If you sub, you have all story content unlocked (as far as i sm aware) and you can clearly see, that it was designed to be a sub based mmo (with some extra stuff in the store slapped on it). Tldr., its a sub game with s horrible f2p option. Only worth playing, if you love middle earth and tolkiens works - thats the sticking point for me, as this is by far the best digital version of middle earth that exists and unfortunately it seems that its not gonna pass that torch anytime soon.
As we appear to be getting to "bottom of the barrel," I'm surprised that DnD Online hasn't been reviewed yet. That's the first MMO I played, and I'd love for Josh to check it out.
Might be a problem since it's run by the same developer as Lord of the Rings Online. If LoTRO isn't optimized for DirectX 12, I don't think DDO will be either.

Don't play lotro through steam, that's just asking for trouble. I know it's an mmo from a decade ago, but it was pure gold before they went down the free to play model. The sound track is awesome and the environmental detail really brings middle earth to life. Also some of the quest lines are just *chef's kiss*. And then there is the awesome community that still sticks around.
The quest "A Striking Absence of Boar" in Evendim has been stuck in my head for years, I don't remember what even followed it up but everything about it was so incredibly meta that I will never not laugh at it
They put the game on steam, so it's an official place to get the game. Being able to run it has got to be the bare minimum requirement, and if it only works from some sources and not from others, they have failed miserably. If this is really an issue, they'd be better off removing it from steam.
Yea the game looked super cool to me because pipe smoking was a skill (i am not sure if this was true) but ofcourse like all good 2000s mmos i wanted to try but could not because of bad pc and no money and time it became trash just as i was getting ready to give it a try.
I have two recommendations for this series: Dekaron and Cabal. They are fairly old games with numerous flaws, but they aren't all bad. They would be great material for a well-structured critique.
just FYI, basically no MMO other than WoW uses DirectX12 atm. Even Guild Wars 2 is still on DirectX9 as of right now, so that's not the issue with LOTRO. (what the issue is I have no idea though, launches fine for me)
@@aureliaaurita6498 they wrote a whole news post. It boils down to "DX11 allows us to support a wider range of operating systems, it's good enough to fix the frame issue and allows tons of upgradability." From an outside perspective upgrading from DX9 to DX11 is relatively straightforward, whereas DX9 to DX12 is akin to rewriting a program in a completely different programming language. WOW can spend the dev resources to do so that, not necessarily any other company.
@@milhousevanhoutan9235 it also potentially locks out some of the player base, I would bet a non-zero number are still on Windows 7 and MS only supported DX12 on W7 for a small list of games mainly WoW in the first place.
@@cericat Yes that's exactly a thing, which is why I said "It allows them to support a wider range of operating systems." Specifically DX11 allows them to support all the way back to Vista, though you are right that Win 7 is the overriding concern. Additionally considering the Mac client was just shut down at the same time they ended 32-bit support, they aren't afraid to EOL a client that a small portion of their userbase is running so it's probably not just 'non zero' but a 'reasonably high minority' the mac client was always buggy and difficult to work with so a lot of people just bootcamped their macs to play gw2 on windows to avoid the mac client. I also believe that even though they don't officially support it I imagine they at least thought about people who may be running Linux and running some kind of WINE setup for gaming, which DX12 is notoriously finicky for those people while DX11 runs pretty much easy breezy beautiful.

This actually looks like a reasonably competent game engine (player-specific gravity notwithstanding) which desperately needs game content designed by someone who knows how to design MMO game content. You know, with a plot, maps that make sense, chained questlines which follow a storyline, and NPCs with names.
Has this series made you more appreciative of good MMOs? As in, a bit more willing to forgive some flaws as these bad games show just how much MORE could go wrong when making one of these?

Josh, new subscriber here, love your MMO content. And I totally understand and love the idea to start a new channel. Looking forward to it, and count me as a subscriber.
"The LV50 equipment requires LV30 drops you no longer can get" is actually a decent idea in a game with a player-owned shops or auction house. It can be done right. Again, old City of Heroes had something sort of like that with the whole IO/purple set crafting... Except there was a legit way to decrease your level and everyone had a ton of alts. The marketeering game was _cutthroat_ but still fair enough that if you didn't want to engage with it, you could.
New channels from my favorite youtubers always worry me because it feels like they'll eventually ditch their first channel. I really, truly hope that doesn't happen to this channel because it's an absolute gem.

I appreciate you taking one for the team by spending two hours on this so we didn't have to.
7:00 that wolf sound reminds me of King, from the Tekken franchise. He'd make one of those sounds during fights, atleast in Tekken 3.
This all making it impossible for me to recomend to new players.
i quit lotro when i got to a quest giver and he told me to buy the questline in the cash shop, i said nah and uninstalled
Unfortunately, LOTRO went downhill when they went free to play around 2010 or so.
The developers are talking about completely redoing the monetization in Lord of the Rings Online. They know it's bad. And frankly I mean they were just kind of figuring out what a free-to-play system even meant in the west since they were the ones basically figuring it out.
@@pocketheart1450 If Lotro did the wow system of you buy game and a 10-15$ sub id gladly do that. Im in my 30s now and i have zero time or want to play a game thats sole purpose for existing is to milk me for more money beyond the box price and sub. Just lemme get the game, and a sub and let me play.
@@jonathansoko1085 yeah, it sucks. Lotro is not a f2p game, even if it is advertised as such. The f2p is more like a free trial and a horrible experience if you try to get on in the game. I mean technically you can grind the points to unlock stuff in the shop - but i guess you have to quit your job then.
@@Remianen this guy is filming on a toaster that lags in a game like Inferna... I don't see how being optimized for DX12 has anything to do with anything, his rig can't even run DX12 lmao
@@Remianen not sure. I manage with it for DDO. Still boot it up with a couple friends from time to time for a bit of a dungeon crawl run if my local tabletop group can't meet up that week. That said, I really don't recommend it for solo play. Even with hirelings you kinda *need* a party for a lot of the content. Which makes sense given its basically a pretty close 1 to 1 port of 3.5 Edition.
I hope he does, I'd imagine he would say good things about ddo
Ddo was the shit when it first came out. Back then you could find groups so fast for the content too
Ouch, I'll be interested in your Lotro video. Lotro has a small but tight knit community and still has regular updates, more than can be said about the past some 10 mmo in this series
I tried to reinstall and replay LOTRO a couple of weeks ago, but even failed to get the game starting. Downloading / installing / patching was a pain in the turbine aera, but now it completely didnt work :(
I tried it out again last month, for the first time since like the late 2000s and I did not make it more than 3h, everything aside from it having the benefit of having the lotr name felt horrible from a modern standpoint.
@@wizardsghost876 did you try switching launcher to 64bit version?
First time I've ever subscribed to a channel with no videos yet. Looking forwards to seeing what we get on the new channel!
I've actually wanted to see you review other games in this style pretty bad, I am a new ish sub and when I found this series I've binge watched it, and man, your humor and the way you review just gets to me, as a game dev I do appreciate the sometimes pedantic review of some things, I want to see ALL that can go wrong so I can ya know, not do that. Hyped for Josh Strife Prays where you literally just become a pastor and guide us to heaven :)
Or Josh Strife Tries, where he tries games develop by Developers such as yourself :D
@@UrbanSyed2904 I WOULD BE HONORED IF HE REVIEWED MY GAMES (even tho I don’t have any to show at the moment) BUT THAT WOULD BE SICK
@@mrnickhox Right!~ he can give his honest opinions to Game Devs passionate in developing their games, hey Josh, can't you do a series like that? at least try 1 episode to see if there's a viewing for it....
I think I still have the cereal box Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 somewhere. Yeah, those games were decent (Monopoly had a catchy theme song).
As someone who majored in Philosophy, I greatly appreciate the Plato's Cave reference, it made the video that much better.
Thanks for the positive review, it means so much to us. High praise indeed, it's an honor, Strife!
See you in game!
Every second I listen to this games theme Josh's description sounds more and more true.
I love Saberspark's movie reviews
Not gonna lie, I got a serious Totalbiscuit vibe from this video, especially towards the end. The rapid-fire, tight-lipped rant. Good stuff.
I really miss him...

Nice call on the new channel, Peon also struggled with trying to stick to just MMORPG content, look forward to some new genres and retro fun!!!
"This is what happens when you find the character rigger on Craigslist." Just my guess: that's someone's attempt at IK. The legs are all funky because they're trying to connect to the ground but someone couldn't get it to work quite right. I'm pretty sure even a rigger from Craigslist is better than that.
Glad to hear about the other channel! Also, you should definitely check out this older MMO called Haven and Hearth. It's definitely unique.
Can't emphasize this enough how AWESOME this guy is !

Really looking forward to the new channel! Love the Idea and Can't wait to see what you come up with!
What's wrong with the steam version?
edit: nvm watched the video. I never had any problems tho. But that was last year
Yea the game looked super cool to me because pipe smoking was a skill (i am not sure if this was true) but ofcourse like all good 2000s mmos i wanted to try but could not because of bad pc and no money and time it became trash just as i was getting ready to give it a try.
Hell yeah, excited for the new channel and seeing your brand of sarcasm unleashed on more games
When you named that lion "Saberspark," I laughed so hard I think I scared myself a little. I did NOT expect a Saberspark reference from you.
(what the issue is I have no idea though, launches fine for me)
And even WoW's DX12 will crap out on some people!
@@DoAGoldeneye Could that be the reason for GW2 announcing its switch to DirectX11 instead of 12?
I also believe that even though they don't officially support it I imagine they at least thought about people who may be running Linux and running some kind of WINE setup for gaming, which DX12 is notoriously finicky for those people while DX11 runs pretty much easy breezy beautiful.
i'm already liked and subbed...i wanna give extra props for the saberspark reference.

Glad you made a new channel for other games, your an excellent watch on UA-cam, very clean professional, and humorous.
POV: it’s 2 PM and you remember it’s time for the Weekly, Worst MMOs series.
Super exited for the new channel! I really enjoy your commentary on the games as you play them and getting more of that is great~
I can't wait to see all the games you'll be covering! I also have one... very obscure little rpg I'd love for you to check out some day, too!
This actually looks like a reasonably competent game engine (player-specific gravity notwithstanding) which desperately needs game content designed by someone who knows how to design MMO game content. You know, with a plot, maps that make sense, chained questlines which follow a storyline, and NPCs with names.
As much as I love your MMO content, I am super excited for your new channel!
Has this series made you more appreciative of good MMOs? As in, a bit more willing to forgive some flaws as these bad games show just how much MORE could go wrong when making one of these?
I have never subbed to a new channel so fast. Can't wait for the new type of content you'll make on it.
