It was named "Black Dog" because there was a black Labrador dog wandering around the studio when they were recording. The title has nothing to do with the song itself. One of my favorite Zep songs.
They said that. But, I don't think it's the truth. Other comments about people around the studio makes me think it's a girl. I don't remember where I got that idea. But it's not a dog. I could be wrong though.
It was in Richard Cole's book who was there.

One of Page's best solos. Plant's voice is perfect. I don't think any actual dog was roaming around the studio. Whoever said that is teasing. 😆👍
I've actually gotten it from multiple sources that it's true. They didn't have a title for the song and they noticed a black dog lingering around outside the studio while they were taking a break between sessions. I do admit that there is a lot of Zeppelin lore that is not true some that is and some that nobody really knows the truth. Case in point; the shark incident. We may really never know, but I think that Occam's Razor applies in the case on this song title.

just sent ya'll some funds...ANY song live from the MSG shows will blow you away...I am still hoping you will react to "Babe I'm Gonna' Leave You" from the 1969 Danmarks Radio show...or you can react to "Dazed and Confused" from Danmarks Radio show and compare it to your reaction to the studio version...their live performances show how tight the band is...less than a year after release of first album its like they had been together since birth!! On American radio stations, Led Zeppelin, like a few other artists, have a couple of "double songs". 2 songs that follow each other on the album, that seem wrong to play one without the other. "Heartbreaker, and "Living loving maid", are the one couple, and the other is :"Black dog, and Rock and Roll".

Lived in Memphis x 6 yrs and all the blues men AND women sang about big-legged women. Once at a blues revival at mid-south coliseum, Little Johnny Taylor yelled out, "How many a yo' women got big laigs?" "I got big laigs! I got big laigs!" rang put around me lol

The title is a reference to a nameless black Labrador Retriever the band used to see wandering the Headley Grange studio grounds. The dog would disappear in the evening and return exhausted in the early morning, before resting all day and repeating his evening sojourns.

Theres 2 diffèrent rythms going on here at the same time. It could easily fall apart but theyre masterusicians so they make it sound easy!!!
I remember the first time I heard this song. It was like being hit in the head with a sledgehammer. One of the iconic riffs and one of the best ever 1st songs on an album. Followed by Rock and Roll, what a 1-2 punch.

Many, many great and awesome bands but there will simply never by anyone who can come even close to Zepp. End of story.
Be careful Andrei, Dominika is turning into a Led Zeppelin groupie 😆! Jimmy Page said that the style of the song where the vocals are sung unaccompanied before the guitars come in was influenced by Fleetwood Mac's 'Oh Well'.

I had bought tickets to see the band before the drummer passed away… just before the North American tour began.
Of course, the band did not continue… and was the story of them.
It just wasn’t meant to be. 😔

No way… Really? If only we had those tickets today as a keepsake… I have often thought.
I thought for sure, they were going to tour after the 2007 reunion concert. But Robert put an end to those hopes. Seems like it's always the lead singer that messes things up. No matter the band.
I had eight row center for the later part of their 1977 tour. I was so excited but it was then cancelled after the tragic death of Robert Plants son. I did get to see them earlier on same tour however my seat was not good it was so far from stage.

I have to tip you again, because I’m so happy you played my pick! My favorite couple playing my favorite song!!! Well to tell you the truth, Black Dog is tied with Whole Lotta Love as my all-time favorite song😊… The reason I wanted you to hear the studio version first is that yes the live version especially the iconic 1973 Madison Square Garden show is great… But that was a couple of years after the song was recorded and Robert could not hit those high notes like that anymore… He did the best he could with a road worn voice but to me that studio version is just pure magic! Rock on you too!

This song is out of synch. Bonham is playing in a different timing than the rest. And they did it on purpose. It's what John Paul Jones called a "stomp groove". It's very funky, and impossible to dance to. As a side note, Robert Plant lost his 5 year old son to an illness in 1977 when he was on tour in the US. The tour was immediately cancelled . He went home to grieve and Led Zeppelin was never the same after that. They released one more album in 1979, but when John Bonham, the drummer , died in 1980, that was it for the band. Robert is now 76, still making music and touring with Allison Krauss.

Dominika, it's the Atlantic records producers that knew how to record every band on the roster just right. You put that togetther wit L/Z's talent, it's great everytime. And I'm glad you guys loved it so..when Black Dog hit the airwaves, MAN, the parents got big-time upset, but couldn't stop the Zepplin from flying higher no matter how many TV preachers or conservatives condemned them.
