    Thank you for the kind words It was my first ever multi cam, and I spent a few months on it, basically redoing it about 8 times over. Nothing was pre-planned and it was all put together after the show. Van Halen fans are the best, and i met some online that shared their original footage with me. If they come around again the filming and editing will be even better!

    I was in the 3rd row with my dad, and all I did, was watch and learn. I was diagnosed with autism when I was 2 years old. And all I do is listen and play. I didn’t cheer or scream, I just stood there and watched and learned. I’ve been playing music since I was 5 years old. And I’m now 30 years old.

    I was at this show. Personally I thought they sounded awesome, like they always have with Dave. Yeah his voice has aged, but the point is that he's front and center, in fantastic shape, and conducting the 3 headed monster of Ed, Al, and Wolf. He moved all over the stage, did frequent roundhouse jump kicks, and was just entertaining as hell. Van Halen is supposed to sound rough around the edges. It's supposed to sound live, like a train is just about the go off the tracks but never does. That's what makes it perfect, because it's imperfect.

    The video is quite good. All of you that made this happen I say thank you. There are some comments about Diamond Dave and bad vocals. I will have to agree with that. Oh well. When Van Halen and Van Halen 2 ..etc he was not known for being the best vocalist either I do not think. Yes Michael Anthony vocals is missing on some songs. Difficult for use old people(like me) to hear anything but Michael Anthony as background vocals on some of the songs. All in all I am glad this is on you tube though. thank you

    For ALL of you slogging Dave here - get a grip - this is what a real rock show sounds like sometimes. I think you're all to used to hearing auto-tuned, canned vocal concerts and stupid controlled environment vocal competition shows. Any singer is a human being and can sound like crap some nights. If a person is sick, getting sick or getting over a sickness, is suffering from a lack of sleep, stress, dehydrated etc. that can all lead to a bad vocal night. Just as your body is different each day - some days rested, some days tired - so can singers voice. We are not machines. There is a lot of money and over 100 people's jobs on the line with every tour so some nights the band HAS to go on even if everyone isn't 100%. Cancelling or postponing a show because of sickness can cost the tour 100,000's of dollars.
    Let's see any of YOU do a nearly 2 hour show 4-5 nights a week for months - all while living out of suitcase, sleeping in a different hotel room each night, constant weather and venue environment changes, bus & plane travel, jet lag etc. etc. etc. Do you honestly think that's an easy thing to do? Seriously? It's fucking hard for guys in their 20's, let alone people in their late 50's.
    In his 20's Dave was never a great live singer - he's a show, a ring leader - he's not fucking Pavarotti (even Pavarotti had his bad vocal nights). So to put that kind of expectation on him shows a complete ignorance of what it takes to be a touring musician - at ANY age.

    • @hasseroeder139
      @hasseroeder139 10 років тому

      My friend, Im a working (hard)rock musician we play three to four sets per show a couple of times a week/month - my singer will NOT, never has sounded like DLR sounds already in the beginning of various shows Ive seen - Not even after rthe third set --and dont get me wrong , a Van Halen "MUSIC" fan !.

    • @TotalSinging
      @TotalSinging 10 років тому

      Hasse Roeder - A couple of sets vs a non-stop 2 hour show is not a true comparison. You guys get breaks between each set. AND are you traveling between each show, living out of a suitcase, eating catered food, dealing with all the business aspects of your show like contract riders, set design and set up (because DLR does all that)?
      Or are you playing shows locally and going home to your comfortable bed most times? There is HUGE difference between what a worldwide touring musician on the VH level does and what a local musician does.
      I have done both (play multiple shows a week locally and multiple shows on tour) and I can tell the touring gig is 50x harder to maintain a healthy voice. Cut the guy some slack.

    • @MrBigden37
      @MrBigden37 10 років тому +2

      Reality, his voice is gone, he wasn't prepared, and if perhaps he just sang the songs w/o the slapstick vegas vaudeville antics it may be tolerable.

    • @TotalSinging
      @TotalSinging 10 років тому +1

      Again - you're not dealing in reality or history. Dave was NEVER a great live singer - even in 1976 in the clubs. He's a showman, a frontman - not Celine Dion. And Dave has ALWAYS been this way live - he uses the stage as his personal playground. If he stood there you'd all slog him for being a tired old man. Damed if he does and damned if he doesn't.
      Reality - it wouldn't matter what he did - you have something to complain about.

    • @TotalSinging
      @TotalSinging 10 років тому

      Secondly - you are seriously disrespecting Eddie & Alex if you think they would have gone through all of this if they didn't think they could all deliver. They ALL have plenty of money where they don't need to tour for the money. You know nothing of tour prep if you think you can throw this together in a couple of months. Its a year in the making minimum.
      You also know NOTHING about DLR if you think he does anything half-assed or unprepared. Nothing.

The energy from the album was incredible. I kept asking myself, "how are they doing this". I'm certainly not lying to myself. Hate on their age. Hate on the different melodies present now. Hate from the Sammy camp. Hate on Roth's vocals (which sound fine to me). You should all drop the hate and look and listen with fresh ears. All your hate does is color what is actually a really good concert.

      Dj Tennessee Agreed. Eddie is still incredible, Alex in top form, Wolfgang is a decent "root note" bassist, and can fairly sing in key, although he looks more like a video game junkie than a rock star. Dave apparently still thinks he's in Vegas by the way he sings. As far as the way they move...they're all around 60, and I think they move better than most 60 year olds. You know, Sammy sang Dave songs; I think it's fitting for Dave to (try) to sing some Sammy songs...just saying'.
      Overall, it's Van Halen, and, IMHO, they will ALWAYS rock!

    I think this is pretty freakin' good. Having embarked on life-long rock fandom in the early 80's, I never thought I'd live to see the day that Roth fronted VH again. For that reason alone, that makes this awesome. As for his vocals, the only thing lacking is the super high scream stuff, and that just comes with age. Even so, that doesn't take away from the overall authenticity of a great original act. Geddy Lee, Brian Johnson, Ian Gillan, Rob Halford; all great vocalists who don't need to scream anymore (Geddy still can, as I saw him do so on 2112 live in '13). Falsetto and scream are two different things, one tears your voice up and the other doesn't. I know, because I regularly give 6 hour concerts in my living room, several days a week. Singing scream shit from the '70s hurts after a bit (Deep Purple's "Child in Time"), but falsetto, a-la Paul McCartney, can be done all night long (and is). My only advice to Diamond would be to incorporate more falsetto in place of scream parts on old songs (but who am I to advise him). Example: Jamie's Cryin'... "OOOoh... and now he's gone forever"; that doesn't hurt, but "AAAH Haaa YEaah!... Runnin' with the Devil..." hurts and can't be pulled off for hours, let alone days/weeks on tour, but for a few minutes in the studio, it's fine. And screaming is such fun! Where else but in the context of Rock can a grown man scream his lungs out and not sound completely insane? Besides, as Tom Petty says, "Rock isn't supposed to be perfect". If you want that, listen to Opera. Boring! (sorry, opera fans). I may have written too much; if you made it this far, thank you.

    I love Romeo Delight from this show for example, and Women in Love, and quite a few others. I am into all versions of Van Halen but prefer the original lineup. It's amazing to see the venom hurled about, like you have to pick and choose. How high a note can be sung is not the end all be all of a singer and songwriter. If it was, we'd all be Celine Dion fans. I wish the band would heal itself by addressing MA and Sammy issues by making up. DLR included. Would also stop the infighting..

    Halfway through this great concert and make another post. I grew up in LA. I was 14 years old when they got signed. I lived on Venice Beach AVE in LA with my mom, works for Ripcurl now. Eddie Van Halen had a band before without david and everyone hated it. (remember gary cherone it was that bad) then once Dave joined VH started plaing parties in Santa Monica, Huntington they even went to SD and were selling out parties. yes you had to pay to get in the party back then. Get it? Dave was needed.

    Michael Anthony is the HEART AND SOUL OF HALEN. HIS backup vocals carried the band for years. dave hasn't been able to sing for 30 years or so.

    The audio quality of a lot of the 2012 and 2015 shows is pretty decent. Thank God for that! We and the band were cursed with so much bad luck with live recordings. This is a band that needs to be experienced live and we have nothing to take us back to those first six tours besides three videos from Oakland in ‘81. I had always assumed they recorded all three shows in Oakland but Michael Anthony says he doubts it. He said they were not trying to record the shows for posterity, they were just trying to put a few videos in rotation on MTV. What a huge opportunity lost. And they were not doing their own shows so there are few soundboard recordings like you can find for Led Zep or the Stones. The Stones even released their best bootlegs! It’s too bad Dave did not have the foresight to capture some of these performances while he was in his prime. A lot (most?) of the full shows we can follow on UA-cam from his last 2 tours show what an a$$hole he was to the crew. According to their road manager Noel Monk’s book, Dave was always a jerk. In the beginning it was good for the band as they were in sync and he would not compromise when it came to quality. But it grew old with everybody. I was always Team Dave but it actually had NOTHING to do with Roth, I was really Team Early VH. Or Team Dave Era, I guess. So I definitely appreciated the setlists from the 2000s. But honestly the setlist from ‘98 was fine. It was such a turn-off that VH abandoned so much of their early songs when Sammy joined. If Sammy had sang the hits, I would have been over the moon.
    So flash to present day. Is anybody shocked that it is Dave that is the holdup to the EVH tribute show(s)? Dave did the honorable thing and hung-up his Vaudeville act when his voice stopped meeting his expectations. But Dave’s schtick was old and tired by the 1984 tour. He had stopped trying to sing full lyrics. He thought it was colorful that he didn’t have to know all the words. Their setlists never changed so that was just lazy… and irritating. So who really wants to see Dave if the band does get back together? He is going to butcher the songs he attempts. They would be SOOOO much better off to bring in Ralph Saenz (aka Michael Starr). Seeing Ralph in the Atomic Punks was WAY better than seeing VH in the 90s. And then nobody would have to suffer Dave’s shenanigans ever again. Sadly, they won’t do it so I hope the event still comes off even though they will have to go thru Dave to get it done. Sigh…

    Ugh, I just can't watch more than a few minutes of this. I love Van Halen, and Eddie is certainly playing great again. But this just doesn't capture any of the spark they once had, it just comes across as a sad attempt to relive their glory days. Dave looks like somebody's crazy Aunt walking around on stage. He often doesn't sing, and when he does, much of the time, it's off key. Badly off key. Back in the late 70s and early 80s, Dave's stage presence made up for some of his vocal shortcomings. Here he spins a mic stand, or attempts a kick that has me praying medical personnel are standing by just off stage. And while Wolfie is a decent bassist, and not a bad singer, he's not Michael Anthony. He's not a rock star, and he has no place in Van Halen. I understand Ed loves his son, and wants to play with him. Fine. If he wants to do a side project, cool.
    Imagine if all four members of Led Zeppelin were alive, and Jimmy Page said "Hey John, no need to come out with us on tour. I'm going to have my son play bass and keyboard/organ from now on."
    Michael Anthony is alive and well. Yet inexplicably, or because of Ed's ego, he is not in Van Halen as they are touring. I have seen sedated geriatric patients show more energy in concert than Wolfie. Michael Anthony was the heart of this band. He's the one that made everything else click. His thunderous bass lines, and his incomparable backing vocals, were the perfect compliment to Ed and Alex. He gave Van Halen balls. And no matter where you come down on the whole Dave vs Sammy debate (I love both singers, but make no mistake, Sammy Hagar can sing circles around David Lee Roth), you have to admit that the band sounds listless.
    This is just...painful. And as somebody who has seen Van Halen numerous times, somebody who dropped what they were doing to see Van Halen play at West End in Dallas on four hours notice, somebody who has bought first every Van Halen record, then every Van Halen tape, then every Van Halen CD...this is Van Halen in name only, and it hurts me to acknowledge that one of my all-time favorite bands needs to hang it up, unless some serious changes are made.

    • @sbrave
      @sbrave 10 років тому +1

      Have to agree, it's not the same without Mike. Eddie needs to get over whatever issues he has and bring him back in. It's bad enough they already dogged him on royalties and the last tour with Sammy. Enough is enough already.
      Roth would be fine if he just stopped trying to sing in that weird higher range. Maybe he blew out his mid-range, but he'd be so much better if he just sang lower..lol

    • @theaterdreamer
      @theaterdreamer 10 років тому

      Boob, I'd have no issue seeing Van Halen with their current lineup (having Wolfie playing bass) if something had happened to Michael. But Mikey's alive and well, and while I know he's happy in Chickenfoot with Sammy, Satch and Chad, Van Halen is one of the greatest bands in the history of rock and roll. He belongs with Van Halen.
      My dream would be to see Chickenfoot and Van Halen tour together. Let Mikey play in both bands. Let Roth handle the DLR-era songs, let Sammy handle the Hagar songs. After both sets are done, do an encore with the bands playing together. Seeing Ed and Joe Satriani together on stage would give me a stiffy that a whole box of Viagra never could.

      Stinky really doesn't fully explain:}} Age really has nothing to do with it when you look at the Stones, Led Zeppelin, the Who ,these guys only get better. Roth is a shameless self-promoter and I mean that in a positive way. He talks a good game, knows all the right people. Puts himself out there. Talented? In comparison to all the other greats in the same age group...not so much. What I have preferred is the talent and energy Sammy Hagar put into the band. He was responsible for putting them in the top ten, the shows became a group effort and not a single was the focal point. Everyone contributed when Hagar came on board. I love it when everyone gets their due. I wish they could all get back together and gives us a badass performance.
