I bought my one and only UCO candle Lantern from the original REI store in Seattle when I was 14 years old (almost 50 years ago). I still have the candle and it works every time.

These are great. You can sit a cup on top & it will heat water etc. I use the one that holds 3 candles to cook a pot.

We used these back during the early and mid 90s in Boy Scouts. I got mine from EMS and it’s actually in the back
of the truck now. They are great not just for outdoor fun but also great for power outages at home.

I just got my first UCO Candeliers. I've loved your channel with so much wonderful information for this longterm widow that had to go back to figuring things out with one set of eyes! You are such a huge help with your straightforward explanations. It was lots of fun trying to find the right little glass bottles with metal tops at the liquor store for the oil option. I'll add one little tip: always trim the wick of any candle to 1/4" before lighting. No wait, no soot.

I tried your substitution with the little bottle, kerosene, medium flame and it burned for 12 hours at temperature in the mid 30s outside my house. After 12 hrs I put out the flame. Impressive! Thanks for the tip. I can use this outdoors. Thanks for all the information, love your videos.

Since you make your own candles you already know the side benefits/dangers of the thickness of the wicks..Basically the bigger/thicker the wick the stronger the flame, so there is a higher BTU and consequently ... more heat exposed to the surrounding metal framework as well as the glass

I have three of these. I like everything about them, You have the good tip on removing overflow wax. If you would add a part on how to keep from letting the glass fall out and how to put the glass back in, I would like that. Thanks

  • @Imightberiding

I used to live in Seattle so maybe that's why I've been using these since the 1990's like Casey who left a similar comment below. I just wanted to mention an even easier, lazy way to clean the wax off the holder. Just toss it in the freezer for a few hours & the wax will just release & flake right off the aluminum. Different expansion & contraction rates between the wax & aluminum at freezing temperatures. The boiling water is fast & effective but it's more work & more clean up.
*Edit: The lamp shade is not just a light reflector, it acts as a heat reflector as well. The top of these candles generate a lot of heat. Partially as a result of the stainless steel baffle at the top as an element of design to make it both a lantern & small space heater. The top shade is recommended if you hang it in a tent. They also make a side reflector like those antique candle lanterns have. It also reflects both the light & the heat in a directional fashion.

    • @Imightberiding

@@xristinarose2409 These little candle lanterns are fantastic in my opinion. Very nice ambient candle light bright enough in a small space to see what you're doing & even read by. As far as heat is concerned, the top plate/defuser is stainless steel & does generate some heat. I have found them to take the chill off an early spring or late fall camping trip in my tent. Don't rely on it for real heat in the winter.

UCO Original candle lantern.... You might say I have a Original , Original UCO candle lantern. I got mine back in 1972. It's the brass one with a felt storage sleeve for it. It's tarnished ( I don't polish it ) and not as shinny as when it was new but is in really good ( new ) condition. It has gone with me on all of canoeing , camping and backpacking trips which have been a lot. I like the soft glow of the candle when camping instead of a bright light. Plus it's a quiet light compared to the gas ones and it does not require any battery's that could go bad.

Do you know how long the wick will burn on oil shot bottle, before need adjusting. I'm using for heat for car, Just in case stuck somewhere winter travels. thanks in advance.

Nice overview of an old backpackers' favorite piece of gear. However, I'd like to point out that the stainless diffuser (lid) at the top of the chimney also functions as a wick snuffer when one slides the caged globe back down into the candle-holder housing--no need to blow on the flame.

I like them but I always convert them to oil burners using shot bottles to avoid the expensive candles .... cotton wick and lamp oil so they're spillproof and no spilled wax to clean up
Use hot glue to secure to the lantern base
The 3 candle yellow unit holds 4 shot glass oil burners which also provides heat in the winter

I just tried to buy this and found they have a lantern that uses Tea candles. Just another option. I want one of each. I also love anything to do with fire...I used to use candles all the time. This is great because it has a defuser so the soot does not go straight up to my ceiling. I just made a Vienna stove. It is amazing. It boils water very fast. Since I don't need small I want to experiment with a larger one. Thanks so much.

Great product.....unless it's hot. Every replacement candle I ordered was misshapen (melted) so much they wouldn't fit and were useless. Every candle I had in my pack was unusable, even the candle in the lantern itself melted so much that it took hours to clean it out. South Florida to New Mexico, not really worth carrying. However, it's been used through several hurricanes and I love it. I love it so much I've replaced the glass when I broke it. Just know not to rely on it when the temps are 90+ degrees........maybe 80+ while travelling and the backpack is in your car. PS I was in the NM mountains, it was 20-30 ° hotter down at sea level. Just don't rely on this product in hot environments

I just ordered the heavy solid brass one for 32.00 along with the hood reflector for boondocking in back of my Tundra. Your aluminum lantern matches the reflector nicely. I tried the glass bottles with aluminum lids, but after a while, the threading on the lids strip out and the lids just fall off. You have to gently twist the lid on without much resistance.

Thanks for the great video. Looks like the lantern works great in terms of light, but can you tell me if the citronella works well to keep the bugs away? I'm not crazy about the smell of citronella, and if it doesnt really make a difference then I'll probably stick with parafin wax. But if the citronella REALLY DOES help with the mosquitos, I can definately tolerate the smell.

I have one of these lanterns and they do work pretty good but you really have to understand the limitations. It is 1 candle and the light output will be limited. This will not replace a high output light (or even a low output head lamp) but it will give you enough light to read a book by as mentioned in other posts. There is a reflector available for these but it isn't great and doesn't clip on tightly... a bit of foil on half of it will give you a bit (just a bit..) more light. Great for what they are but you gotta know their limits or you may be disappointed.

Beyond the fact that, repurposed, I've found the plastic ones make efficient and lightweight containers for backpacking small quantities of salt, pepper, hot sauce and other condiments on backcountry trips, you've shown an easy method of replacing expensive wax candles with cost and weight effective lamp oil. "Simon, a bloke in the woods" made a more elaborate conversion in one of his videos; but your solution can be accomplished with a wick and a punch--even a nail will work--to produce hole for said wick.

I tried that boiling water trick it may have went better if I didn’t use the microwave. Seriously I can’t say I’m over impressed with
the lantern its too flimsy and the case only sort of fits. Its fine for an emergency but its nothing I would want to screw with on a
regular basis. I do like the tea candle unit, no muss no fuss.

greetings from Oregon. I'm am pressed with your video. I was at work thinking of an EMP strike and I have no power. I have to travel 12 miles to get home in the dark (I work nights) and it just came across to me that even my flashlight will be useless. So I was thinking how our forefathers got around but thinking in modern terms and found my answer on ebay. Not knowing the product well your video sold me.....thank you for sharing your video.

I freeze my candles ..... this turns the candle 🕯 into no drip. Crazy how that works.

Jiujitsu2000 I need your input on these. I'm looking to heat a 4'×4' wooden hunting box blind I use for whitetail hunting. I've been searching for the cheapest way possible. Also as you can imagine it has to be packable and scent free. They also have a Candlelier model capable of 5000 btu's. What would be your suggestion. I love the little oil lantern idea, are they scent free. Great video buddy, love them all.

Make a silicon mould of the original candle..buy a pack of candle wicks..make your own candles with used/leftover candle wax or a bag of wax pellets from eBay..less than 1/4 of the cost 👍

If it falls or accidentally knocked over does the Candle automatically goes out on its own.
    No Fire 🔥 hazard?
