Inside Delhi’s Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah Complex lies the tomb of a medieval poet who has as many fans among today’s millennials as he did during the Delhi Sultanate (1192 - 1526 CE). The compositions of Amir Khusrau Dehlavi, who lived between 1253 and 1325 CE, can be heard not only in the qawwalis at Sufi dargahs (mausoleum of a saint) across South Asia but even on today’s social media platforms, music streaming sites, and at music festivals.
Amir Khusrau’s timelessness can be gauged from the fact that a post-modern rendition of his most popular compositions, ghazals, and poems have even been re-interpreted and remixed, appearing in Bollywood movies and music.
Perhaps the magnetic allure of his compositions stems from a now lost ‘Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb’, a unique syncretic culture that incorporated elements from Muslim and Hindu traditions that had slowly begun to emerge during Khusrau’s time. In today’s divisive world, it not easy to ‘label’ the life and work of Amir Khusrau. He interpreted human emotions in a way that was truly original and one of a kind. Through his works, he established a greater meaning of love.
"बहुत कठिन है डगर पनघट की" is an age-old classic that reminds us of the legacy of Amir Khusrau. For him, love was a road to salvation, after innumerable barriers, one finds this elixir of life. Many people want to take this road but only a few are able to win over their petty egos and experience the true heaven of love. This only, 4 lettered word has the power to bring havoc as well as eternal bliss to someone. Khusrau portrays the lady, as an inspiration for the people who seek true love, who goes to the well every day to fetch water, under all circumstances, whether good or bad. On her way back home, she sings, she talks but not even for a second her mind deviates from the pot filled with water that firmly sits on her head. Love also requires this type of dedication, it does not demand your every hour or every day but just a little care and patience as you go on your way.
Then the lady says that as she was on her way back, some notorious children, snatched her pot, it fell and broke. And she was unable to fetch water from the Yamuna river. But this will not diminish her spirits and again she will continue her work with dedication.
Behind this masterpiece is the stunning trio consisting of Bindhu Malini, Ankit Chadha, and Vedanth Bharadwaj.
Bindhu Malini is a singer trained in both Carnatic and Hindustani music and hails from a family of musicians. She has composed and sung for jingles and films in Hindi, Kannada, and Tamil. Since 2014, Bindhu has also been part of a musical narrative on Hazrat Amir Khusrau.
Ankit Chadha was known for his unique style of storytelling in Urdu and had performed at various national and international stages, including universities like Harvard, Yale, and Toronto.
An alumnus of the Trinity College London, Vedanth Bharadwaj is an Indian vocalist and music composer who is best known for his songs and poems from the Bhakti movement.

Rajasthan Kabir Yatra is a 7 days-long annual traveling folk music festival spread across six rural and urban locations in and around Rajasthan. Organized by Lokayan, Bikaner and partnered with Rajasthan Police, this is a folk festival providing a space where folk musicians, artists, scholars, students, and seekers can immerse themselves in the voices of Bhakti and Sufi saint-poets such as Kabir, Mira, Bulleh Shah, and many more, questioning and dissolving boundaries of caste, class, religion, and identity.
The five editions, in 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019 were widely chronicled and appreciated. It brought together 50 artists, over 400 Yatris every year from other parts of India, and thousands of local audiences.
