In tonight’s bonus Ramble, I’m diving down the knit beret rabbit hole thanks to this little wool blend beret I picked up at the Halloween costume shop (I’m going to be a French mime for Halloween). Join me for a fun dive into eight beret patterns I’m loving right now, as well as the story behind this seemingly underpriced black beret. 01:22 Some context. 08:27 The Patterns My Ravlery "Beret" Favorites Bundle: www.ravelry.com/bundles/berets-254
Tip for when your knitting a beret . When you need to block it use a plate to dry it on ! My grandma taught me to do it. It makes blocking so much easier.
I am blocking a hat that way right now! I don’t think it's technically a beret, as it's a little deeper so I have a canister of wipes holding up the center. See Easwas by Kate Davies Designs.
I actually saw a GORGEOUS crochet beret pattern by Lucia Luciano called the Aureole. It's stunning and I would never have known it was crochet. There are so many beautiful crochet berets! www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/aureole
Thanks so much! I knit a bunch of berets last winter and it's interesting to see how people wear them and could actually create a photo essay of its own. Sometimes you just want to reach through and adjust one that could have been worn less nerdy, but oh the fun of wearing them. Love your pattern selections. Personally, I think it's the best hat style ever.
Love your roundup as always, thanks, Taylor! I’ve made the ultra adorable and tres chic Salut Cheri twice, both using a light fingering weight (Lamana Milano cashmere). Held single on first one, smaller needles and cast on more stitches (3mm, 112 stitches), held double on second for a denser gauge (4mm). Both turned out super cute and were fast: done in just 6 evenings (I’m a slow knitter). Can totally recommend for that cute French look. Love your French vibe today!
Hi Taylor! I love a good beret! By the way cepes are a type of mushroom, often called by their italian name, porcini. Their shape is very reminiscent of berets. Thanks for the great collection of patterns!
What a great show, Thanks! I feel so inspired. I have never really been a big fan of a beret but the patterns you have shown really inspired me. I love the Colette. I think I need that piece in my wardrobe. I have a beautiful oatmeal color in a lovely wool that I can hold double and an oat colored mohair to hold with it. Yummy, Huh! I can't wait to see what you knit. Mandy
I have a beret that was knitted for me called the Phryne beret after the style of beret worn by the title character of miss fisher’s murder mysteries. I think it’s still on ravelry. I also have the Rembrandt beret by fabel knitwear in my to knit pile.
This is coming at the right time! I want a big beret for years. But all the berets in the shops are so tiny and that doesn´t suit me. Or it doesn´t fit me either. So I decided to knit one as I´m knitting every day anyway!🐏
I have five winter hats in my wardrobe at the moment and I was looking for excuses to crochet myself another one. You gave me the perfect alibi: I don't own a beret yet! Will be searching for crochet designs straight away :) Many thanks from Munich!
Thank you for all the wonderful suggestions. I also want to recommend the Nieve pattern from Valley Yarns. I made one for my daughter, now all my girls want one.
This is just such a charming post! I have one felt beret that is brown and just classic, and one that I don't recall where I got it, but it is truly a raspberry beret. Your patter choices are ooh-la-la and have me jonesing to try one. Thanks for sharing!
@@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS oh god, I've been in the Gulf Islands near Vancouver and have had no signal 🤦♀️. Happily chunking away at the Someday Beret. Thanks Tayler 😊
Cepes (sepps) are mushrooms. "One of the most famous foods in France are called 'ceps' or 'Boletus Edulis' 'Cèpes'. These are wild mushrooms that are edible and grow all over the countryside in France."
Ooooo la la! You missed your big opportunity here in the Poetisa to say "This one is great if you want something... je ne sais quois..." 15:22 You are gonna need to knit a matching Sophie scarf to go with your knitted beret!
Two years ago I knit myself the Barret by rosa p. In Lamana Como and I LOVE it. The yarn is fantastic and I love the shape of a beret on myself. Now I want another one 😂
But more importantly, did the boys find costumes? 😆 This is actually very timely. I bought a real splurge yarn, Muskox-Merino-Silk blend from Windy Valley Muskox and am making their Monique Beret pattern. It is a joy to work on!
I have to say, as a French and a Parisian, I don't understand the hype about berets. In my 29 years of life I have seen maybe 3 berets worn outside. And "Cepes" is said "Cep-, same sound as "said". It's a type of mushroom :) It was an interesting video ! I don't think I will ever make one for myself (maybe one for a friend of mine), but it made me want to knit. I've been crocheting a lit.
I think that the beret will always carry with it a very French vibe given its origin and iconic representation (which is evident in the names of most of these beret patterns--I see that the cèpes mushroom is grown along the French countryside--its inescapable), however I wouldn't expect to see them on every head in Paris. 😅 I'm glad you found this interesting though and are inspired to knit! I will say though, there are some BEAUTIFUL crochet berets available. 😍
Ahhh criteria is just a starting point! Thank you for the suggestion. The Star Crossed Slouchy beret is really lovely. I knit it a LONG time ago. I want to say 2011. ❤️
I despise beanies because they make the head look like a bowling ball (and my hair is very short), so I have been looking for an easy asymmetrical beret pattern. Thank you!
I think you meant 9 other months not seasons 😊! Here in southeast Saskatchewan we typically have more cold/snowy months then not and the thought of having more of that is frightening!
My black beret costume is a French Boatman (I think) with a stripped jersey and black pants and bandana scarf. This is based on a painting, Monet Renoir? Anyway I think the whole effect is cool!
It’s called a “Ramble” for a reason! That’s what we’re here for! If it’s not for you, that’s okay, there are millions of other videos out there for you, @sweetdarlin315.

Why would we buy a beret for 7$ when we can make one for 60?? 😂
Good point 😂
Just bought a $7 beret, small, tight, cheap. Going to knit one with yarn from my stash. Cheap too.
@@3Dhyanaabsolutely that stash we all have has to be used sometime and it will fit
Bragging rights, 100%. 😂
Cepes can mean wild mushroom.
I am so with you on comfortable costumes. Never liked dressing in costumes as a child for that reason. Love your hat.
Thank you Susan! And SAME. My costume preferences as a kid were always things that were warm and cozy or in the very least, comfortable. 🙌

I think that yarn you have would look fabulous in the Poetisa pattern. This was a very fun ramble
This is gonna be such a stash buster❤
I knit My Favourite Things Beret No. 3 recently and it’s a fabulous pattern. Knits up fast and fits perfectly.
Ooo this is good to know! I really like the No. 1 for it's lighter weight, but the No. 3 is really lovely too. 🤔❤️
I am feeling some kismet here as I just crocheted my first beret🎉I found it was the simplest hat to work up. Great for quick gift making!
And now I feel the need to knit up a beret 😂
I know the feeling.😘
I created a crochet pattern years ago that has been my go to for a beret, I had never considered knitting one. Thanks for sharing those!

My pleasure, as always Joan. Thank you for watching!

Omg I think you read my mind! I bought one last week from Ravelry and got a free pattern from a yarn company free pattern collection.
Yay! 🙌🙌
I crocheted myself a beret recently and I love wearing it, makes me feel fancy
Nice timing! I need to cast one on.
The French connection beret was really cute! I generally don’t wear berets but this is inspiring ❤
ohhh the colors for that beret are gorgeous. I will be watching for an upcoming release of that colorway again
Berets are my favorite to knit. For basic beret I would go for the purl beret by purl studios
Please make yourself a beret in that mustard gold colour you had on your board. I think it would be an amazing pop of colour in your wardrobe
That style always reminds me of Audrey Hepburn, so chic!
Right?! I totally agree. ❤
Indeed! Very Charade or Funny Face 🤓

Liked your collection. Thanks for making work easy.
Hi Taylor! I love a good beret! By the way cepes are a type of mushroom, often called by their italian name, porcini. Their shape is very reminiscent of berets. Thanks for the great collection of patterns!
Thank you for watching Isabelle! And I had no idea that cepes were porcinis (I love porcinis)! They do look like little berets. ❤️🧑🎨
I love your podcasts!
I enjoy the structure of a felted beret also. My favourite things Beret no.3 is a cute one.
A la prochaine…
Good idea, and the yarn you showed is gorgeous!
Thank you Jamie! ❤️
Once again another brilliant episode. Looking forward to starting my beret 🥰

I believe Cepes is a type of mushroom, Your yarn would be perfect for a mushroom beret!
You're right! It's a mushroom found in the French countryside. And that is EXACTLY what this color is. Mushroom! ❤️

I'm so glad this is timely! I hope you find something here that inspires you to cast on. ❤️
Totally inspired by this !!!! Thanks for doing it 😘
Okay I love the Poetisa pattern the subtle eyelet band was so cute. The bulky weight beret though i can see myself making for this winter.
The Poetisa is so sweet. The little eyelets are my favorite! ❤️
@@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS I like that the eyelets really define the band and really define the beret shape.
I was just thinking, I hadn’t seen a video from you yet, and bam, thee you are! Okay gotta go watch now.😊
Hope you enjoy! ❤️
I would love to see your beret in those 2 beautiful yarns!!
You always bring joy!
Thank you so much Kimberly. ❤️
The beret looks great on you!
Thank you! ❤️

Ooooo yes! Happy hunting. And here's one that I think is gorgeous:

Thank you for all the wonderful suggestions. I also want to recommend the Nieve pattern from Valley Yarns. I made one for my daughter, now all my girls want one.
And I used your pattern for the fireside mitts to have a matching accessory with it.

cepes is French for porcini mushrooms
How fun! I got a beret knitting book at the thrift store the other day for only 50 cents 😍 but I’m yet to knit my first beret from that book 👩🏻🎨
The beret looks great on you!
Oh thank you so much! 😘

They did! I have a skeleton ninja with glowing blue eyes (Ronan) and Steve from Minecraft (Aengus). ☺️
And this Muskox yarn sounds amazing Denise!
I like Charlotte by Brenda York. Also a free pattern
When you add a Pom Pom. I think of the Scottish tam
Cepes (pronouced Seps) are a type of mushroom. I think the inspiration is visible with a bit of study. Ysolda is great!
'thank you for your research.

My first thought was how can Tayler be a mime? She's a born talker.
😂😂😂❤
Not within your preset criteria, but I found the star crossed slouchy beret earlier this week and I’m in love
Ahhh criteria is just a starting point! Thank you for the suggestion. The Star Crossed Slouchy beret is really lovely. I knit it a LONG time ago. I want to say 2011. ❤️
The stock and pip beret by albionia McLaughlin!!
What a great idea for a costume! I’m guessing Palet rhymes with beret. 🤷♀️

Im going to be a mime too ❤ I did not knit my beret 😂
Or a French Kiss (mime with Kiss makeup lol)
Omg I love that.
Crepes are a type of mushroom

Thank you Chris. ❤️❤️
Love this! I recently made the Best Beret by James Watts, also a great pattern!
Yes! Love this one. It’s actually in the bundle as well. ❤️❤️
Your accent is so cute 😍 We could work on our pronunciation together, you French and me English. I like your Halloween costume idea.
Compare berets and tams.
pronounced 'sep' - a wild mushroom
I was about to comment the exact same thing.

You talk too much and it took way too long to get to the point. Come on lady, you are wasting everyone’s time.
Try spreading kindness, not rudeness. It works wonders for the hopelessly disgruntled. Have a great day.
