It’s fascinating that three of the founding fathers (Jefferson 83 and Adams 90! and Monroe 73) all died on the Fourth of July, and two died on the same day- Jefferson and Adams. Adam’s last words were “Jefferson lives on”, but he was unaware that Jefferson had died a few hours before him. So interesting.

That has always fascinated me, three Presidents dying on July 4th. In 1836, James Madison came up six days short and died on June 28th. President Zachary Taylor became sick on July 4th, 1850 and died on July 9th. Later, President Calvin Coolidge was born on July 4th, 1872.

The tradition of a president leaving office in financially worse shape than he entered into it began with Monroe. A son of the revolution. A father of his country. I feel America took more than was owed from President Monroe. And gave back when it was too late. His legacy, his legend lives on. As does the country he loved.

I like how these histories usually describe obviously well-off people as "not privileged'. I'd say he was quite privileged-- he got to go to school while many kids could not-- they had 800 acres, a huge estate for those times-- they owned slaves- please, let's have a little realism. Even my own father was taken out of school in the 6th grade to work on the farm in the 1930s. All these so-called 'poor' who grew up to be people of power, wealth and fame, hardly a one was really really dirt poor. Even Oprah whose claims have been questioned by her relatives who were there, could go to high school which many in my family could not.
