in brief:
In this video, the speaker discusses the C1 advanced level of English, which is the ultimate goal for many English learners.
The speaker explains that C1 is about fluency with a deep understanding of the nuances of the English language, including phrases that native speakers naturally use and understanding subtle jokes.
The video focuses on the grammar needed to achieve the C1 level, which is less about learning entirely new grammatical structures and more about learning grammatical nuances and fine-tuning one's repertoire of phrases.
Key grammatical concepts covered in the video include:
- Tenses: Advanced uses of past, present, and future tenses.
- Modals: Advanced structures for speculation and deduction.
- Conditionals: Advanced usage of words and phrases to replace "if."
- Passive Voice: Using passive infinitive and passive ING forms.
- Negative Inversion: Adding emphasis and variation to writing and speaking.
- Hedging and Boosting: Softening or increasing the force of statements.
- Phrasal Verbs: Understanding their various meanings depending on the context.
- Conjunctions and Connectors: Mastering coordinating, correlative, and subordinating conjunctions and connectors to form complex and varied sentence structures.
The speaker has also created a free ebook that details everything covered in the video, as well as additional grammar, vocabulary, and skills needed for the C1 level. The ebook is available for download through a link in the video description.

Thx for briefing!!
Thank you sir
May blessings be showered upon you!
i reached c1 level at nineteen years old during the two years of the pandemic, with depression and a lot of trashy american tv shows.
if i could do it, you can do it too ✨✨
So, what do you do here?
@@user-gu4ne3lq2l real
My Cambridge Certificate says I'm already a C1 user, but there's still so much to learn. My ultimate goal is to master the language and become as fluent as it's possible for a non-native speaker of English. Hope to sit my C2 exam one day.
Same situation here
I think I am already at C1 level, mastering English has always been my goal.
Do you have a social media platform, I need an English speaking partner??
😂😂😂😂

Go forward my friend
I stopped learning English ten years ago, I got a B2 level, but, I finally decided to get the C1. Actually, it was sooo hard at the beginning, but I am studying and improving. 😊
That's fantastic! It's never too late to pursue your goals. Keep up the good work and stay committed to your studies.

I'm at B1 level in English and my ultimate goal is C2
Thank you so much LUCY I'm from Algeria
It's basically impossible, the C2 level only has people like professors or engineers at NASA.
@@josuepineda148 thats not true
It's possible if you study a lot.
Current level: B1
Goal level: C1
Me too 😊
me too
Same, I acknowledge almost every B1 phrases also, I almost reached out to B2 level.
I did your online test and it said my level is presumably C2 which seems to be overly optimistic to me. I just spend to days with my lovely British friend in Berlin and I felt more I’m on a B2 level as I’m not used to speak English as often as I would like to do. Searching both for grammar and vocabulary. So I guess it would be a perfect idea to join your C1 course even if your fantastic tenses challenge was sometimes quite demanding, at least for me. Btw I utterly love the way you’re teaching English with such a great level joy for your language and plenty of emphasis. 👍🇬🇧🇩🇪
Congratulations on your fantastic score! That test is just intended to be a guide, but you clearly have a great grasp of the language! I’m so glad you enjoy my lessons :) It’s great to have you on board! I am very excited to launch the C1 course - it’s the best yet!!!
@@EnglishwithLucy 😊
I just thought I’d offer some helpful criticism to what you’ve written. I’m a native English speaker. (The first sentence is spot on!)
“I just *spent two days in Berlin* with my lovely British friend and I felt more *that* I’m on a B2 level, as I’m not used to *speaking* English as often as *I would like to*. (One could also say, “…as often as I’d like.”) *I’m* searching *for both* grammar and vocabulary. So, I guess it would be a perfect idea to join your C1 course, even if your fantastic tenses challenge was sometimes quite demanding, at least for me. Btw, I utterly love the way *you* teach English with such a great level *of* joy for your language and plenty of emphasis *on [fill in the blank - could be pronunciation, vocabulary, the basics, etc.]*.”
@@user-no2mz9hl4f excellent! spotted some of those easy fix-mistakes myself and contemplated about posting them. not only did you save me from typing a bunch, but noticed about twice as many issues. German is my first language as well. and I also lack the ability to occasionally apply some English instead of only consuming it passively. regarding the very last word-emphasis: I'm fairly certain, op meant to say or express enthusiasm.
feel free to correct me too, lol 😅
I estimate my level to be around B1; probably on the verge of B2. learners, though, should keep in mind that it's not a given for all so called native speakers to pass every single test with flying colors. the grasp as well as error rate can be rather dramatic even among this linguistic subset, I'd been noticing 😅
@@HxTurtle Yes, this is true! Many native English speakers have a poor grasp of the language. Many use improper grammar, have a poor vocabulary - some even mispronounce words (and I’m not talking about variations in dialect)! My grammar instruction was limited in my school days, but thanks to my grandfather and other adults in my life, I learnt how to speak properly on an instinctual level, even if I don’t always know what all the grammar terms mean.
This video is a must-watch for English learners aiming for the advanced C1 level! Thumbs up for highlighting these key milestones in language learning!

Splendid work, Miss Lucy.
This is educational to learn about C1 level English language.
I passed Cambridge CAE exam with grade B many years ago but I have never had an opportunity to use English actively on level C1. I'm sure that your course will give me a chance not only to brush up on my long-forgotten knowledge but also to expand it.
Ultimate goal - C2 😀Why not?
Me too took Cambridge yrs. ago but never being able to use it

thank you for teaching us to the usage of 'brush up' , that word will be definitely used in my IELTS writing :'))
I thought I was at a C1 level. However, everything shifted rapidly after watching this video. I also learned some grammar points that you mentioned, to be honest. It really dawned on me, and now I will rehearse my C1 skills. Thank you so much, teacher.
Nice! Keep up the great work! You're doing amazing! 😊👍
I think I’m at B1, maybe B2, I would love to have a C1 level! English is such a beautiful language! ❤
Often I think of myself like someone who speak C1, but really I struggle slightly aabove B2. Hope things will change with yours wonderful lessons. Thank you, Lucy!
I've clicked away for the ebook.
Thank you Lucy.
I am here in the Philippines. I have lived in UK for thirty years but there is no end to learning❤
It is a very useful lesson! It helps me to assess my English level, which I think between B2 and C1 according to what has been mentioned in this short video! English with Lucy, thank you so much ❤️,!
Quite a book I'll be spending my time, together with my classes and reviews. Thank you Lucy!
Thank you, Lucy, I've been pleasantly surprised with the amount of extensive and well-structured information about the C1 level. You served as such an inspiration to master the B2 level to get going to ease and relaxation of the C1 level. Fingers crossed and as well, good luck to everyone who is on this journey!

Thank you so much dear teacher Lucy, stay safe and healthy.
You’re an amazing English teacher Lucy . You really know how to convey the concepts and the contents . Even though I am an English teacher I have been learning a lot from you . Thank you so much for sharing it with us. ❤️
I failed my C1. I got really upset, to be honest I got a bit depressed. I spent months preparing myself with courses and private classes. Also studying by myself, doing my best to reach something that I really wanted to. I was confident that I could score at least 180 but sadly my score was 178.
When I got the results I was 100% sure that something was wrong. I asked and paid for my exam be reviewed twice. They said that nothing was wrong. I showed my results to my teacher and based on all our hard work and mock tests, etc, he said that it would be impossible to have got ALL 56 questions in the Reading part wrong. My speaking test, Listening, Use of English was above 185 marks, how could I have answered 56 questions wrong in the Reading part? 😮 I am sorry but for me it is a bit hard to believe, honestly.
From that moment I gave up studying.
I know, it is not a paper that will define who I am. I'm trying to rebuild my confidence. I believe that everything has a purpose even when we fail because God knows everything!
You should continue with studying. Never give up things so easily, I am not good at English, I want to reach C1, I'm also visiting C1 lessons and I'm scared from CAE exam
@@sevilsedatova1199 Tks for you comment. I am sure you will reach your goals. C1 is hard I can tell but if you study a lot and do billions of of mock tests you will get there.
God bless!
Thank you very much for sharing your sorrow experience. However, I undergo the same experience as you did, but with the IELTS test. I have tried to reach c1 but I got 6.5. It was disaster.

i watch your videos because i’m a training teacher, thank you for these lovely shorts! I am doing a Tesol course.
I've been following your videos and no doubt you're doing a immensely great job , thank you
Hello!
My current English level is B2, and my ultimate goal or thing that I would like to achieve with the language is the C1 level! :D
I think that it would give me enough satisfaction and confidence with the language for fully understand the things that I listen to, read and I like to research.
Thanks for the video :3.
Many thanks, Lucy, for your pleasant, educative and reasonably challenging content and this concise video ❤ I adore your pronunciation! I've passed the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English exam (C2) at the end of my A-Levels (more than 10 years ago) and have been using English in my work and private life ever since. However, I feel that the variety of my active vocabulary, idioms and expressions can be improved and has actually decreased over the years (due to lack of serious practice with native/more advanced English speakers). If you don't live in an English-speaking country and have little encounter with native speakers in different contexts (such as culture, politics, science), you quickly lose practice. Therefore, I'm considering to take active action to work on my command of English, including the pronunciation. I wonder if the C1 course is not too easy for me, but I do believe that I could learn something new or at least refresh my language skills. My goal is to improve my everyday language and make it more versatile and sophisticated.
rest assured, if your spoken English is only about half as good as your written form, you easily outperform the majority of all native speakers-especially considering the States being an English speaking country as well (lol.)
but I hardly read anything as error free as your text-including native speakers. touching up one's skills is always a good idea, but I can also see how this is somewhat of a challenging task to improve yours even further.
cheers!
What an English !
I've never taken a proficiency exam, and I wonder what level would I get if I apply for a test. I really feel you, especially where you say it is difficult to practice or continue in touch with the language in a non English-speaking country. Furthermore, if you don't cheer yourself up, you barely improve it.
thanks a lot.I'm B2 and I truly aim to level up my english.
Wow I can't believe that I achieved towards C2 in your test, I'm over the moon.
When I saw Lucy's videos I got motivated, absolutely I'll get the advanced level❤
I can express myself spontaneously and fluently. Also, I can understand subtle jokes and complete participation in conversations in everyday life situations.
Such a thorough overview. I've got ielts 8.0, which technically is a full on C1, but i feel like a lower C1 after watching this. It's not unknown, yet unused.
Thank you Lucy this video was very helpful. I am a non-native speaker of English but I've learnt English since my school days and I'm extremely passionate about English and I would currently rate my proficiency as B2 and aspire to develop it to C1 level. I have been following your UA-cam channel for quite some time now and I appreciate your work. I wish to be as good as you in English 😊. Thank you for the wonderful work that you do.

it was pretty pleasent to hear your accent, thx for the video and the data
I watch your video to see you. I have no fascination with learning English but seeing your video motivates me to learn.
I am quite hubristic by nature so I don't want to make any bold claims but I'd say that I'm at B2. Having said that my grammar knowledge is a bit haphazard because I did not apply myself at school due to personal issues. I'm however working on that aspect and aim for at least C1 maybe even C2 within five years.
I adore your voice, it is so pleasent to hear.
Thanks for the lesson

to thank. Thanks a lot for the excellent video
i'm not really sure in what level of my english proficiency, but when i'm watching people's videos on youtube i absolutely understand what the meaning is. unfortunately my speaking skill is not as goo as my listening. i face some trouble when trying to speak and talk to people, kind of need a bit of time like seconds to process generating phrases haha. I aim to get C1 level and ensure that my speaking skill is fluent and could talk clearly. Thank You, Lucy

I reached C1 level a long time ago, but this video has still been very useful. I'm trying to reach C2 level but I feel like it'll take forever, at least double or triple the time taken to reach C1 level from scratch.
I’m also an English Teacher from Chile, I learned the language at the University and graduated with honours 20 years ago. I’ve continued learning the language though, currently I’m teaching B1, B2 levels. I thought I had C1 level of English, but there’s still so much to learn. My goal, of course is C2, and I’m positive that if I continue studying and learning I will be able to achieve it 😊
Edit: I’m able to understand the lyrics from Blur’s song Parklife. Does it make me a C2? 😂
In germany we take an english test (Vera8) in eighth grade. I was the best of my whole class and got 98% wich is the equivalent to C1
Thanks my lovely teacher 💜💜
