I was taught English in school from age 7, but English is not an official language in my country, so as you may expect, it was treated as a second language (because for everyone, it actually was). And during my 11 years of formal English studies, never have I once heard the rule about avoiding the usage of prepositions at the end of sentences; frankly, we were taught that way to begin with (like right here)
I have experienced, that a some series of school books have different ways to teach. When I was starting to learn, we were taught whole phrases first and learned the short forms later (I will not learn. - I won't learn.) Today they already start with the short forms, but then it's sometimes harder to learn I think...🤔
As a native speaker, it makes me realise how difficult it is to become fluent in everyday English. The idiom varies so much from place to place, as do the accents..... 's hard innit? 😀
English is very easy. The problem is that native speakers don't pronounce words well, especially when talking about Americans. They pronounce words as if something in your mouth is preventing you from speaking.
I loooooove learning and trying to understand idioms. My high school English teacher made me fall in love with it and since then i've enjoyed finding new ones to fill my list.
I'm Brazilian, and i decided to learn English by myself and, it took me some good 5 years to figure it out all that "spoken English" aspect of conversations, i think it's very important to understand tha in order to express your thoughts properly in English because, when you don't, it's amazing how much people look at you asking themselves "omg, where did you came from, 1985?😂", and that can work against you on a conversation. First channel that i see this aspect of the language being even talked about, just recommend your channel to one of my friends trying to learn the language as weel, your channel is great! Thanks for the knowledge
Great video! As a Swede I was taught English at school from an early age, yet I've always found it difficult to understand native English speakers. That was until I realised that I was always thinking Swedish when listening to English people talking, like translating every word I hear to Swedish to understand what was said. So I stopped doing that and instead started to think English instead, listening with an English ear and not with a Swedish ear, and in that way I could understand native English speakers way much better!
one of the main reasons that discourage me from studying English and trying to get better at speaking it is to think that no matter how much I study, I’ll never be able to talk as fast as a native-English speaker. that way, there would be no chance I could compete with someone who has English as their mother language for a job or something. have you ever thought that way? if so, how did you send this horrible conception of incapacity away?
That's great that you've been able to improve your English by thinking in English. Currently I'm trying to learn French, and I want to get to the level where I can think in French without translating to English (I have yet to get there though). I find your English impressive, I imagine you worked hard to get to the point you're now at. Your English is so good, I want to offer one little correction to a phrase you used. You said at the end "way much better," which sounds kinda funny to English ears. You can say "way better," or you can say "much better," but not "way much better." Those two words "way" and "much" can't be put together like that. Like I said before, your English is amazing, I hope to attain that same level in a second language some day. Cheers!
@@ozmorfgamereviews Thanks a millon, for your answer and for correcting my errors! Much appreciated! I've studied French too, actually. Also in school. But only for three years though, and I've never been so into being fluent in French (even if that would be great as well!). Of course, the method I used to understand English better demands that you already know enough of the language you wish to improve. But I still believe that at least one of the keys to learn and "get" a language quicker is to think the language while listening to it, and not your native tongue. To me, when trying it, it was a mindblowing experience! I thought about it, and tried it by watching an UK talk show clip on youtube, and I was ashtonished how my English improved when I "switched off" Swedish in my brain and switched on English! Thanks again for your message, credit and boost, and I wish to you good luck with your French studies! I hope the technique I used may help you somehow. Cheers!
@@catallystic I'm sorry if I came across as harsh towards you in my first response. I was in a hurry and read your message too quick and answered it even quicker! Now, I see I must've seemed quite obnoxious. Not my intention at all. My apologies! But anyway, try the method I described and I can assure you that you'll notice positive differences! And the more you practise by "switching off" your native tongue and switch on English when eg. watching an English TV show or Film, the quicker you will see a change in your understanding of the English language. At least, that worked for me! About competing with native English speakers when it comes to work opportunities, I would say - without living in any native English speaking country - that it may depend on what profession you wish to have. But as I understand, many companies really do appreciate diversites in their organisations, weather different backgrounds and dialects. Many companies of today see it as a strength to reflect the present society within their organisation - and since our society today is global, well, then there you go! So maybe that's where you'll may find your strength where your "weakness" may in fact be your edge! And I really do believe your English is more than good enough already if you wish to try applying for a job in a native English speaking country! Good luck! Cheers!
You're the english teacher I would've wished to have in school. Though the one that formed my interest in the english language wasn't half bad, either. I love these videos it's always a pleasure to see how well you explain things to people. I grew up bilingual, speaking German and English, and I always found it confusing in school in Germany how strictly we had to adhere to the textbooks to get a good grade... I studied in a course in my town and finished in 2016, since then it's been difficult to find someone to talk in English, altough I teach one or two children in a year. I wish I had found your channel long ago.Well, your tips about not finishing a phrase with prepositions were so valeable, because in the course where I studied they didn't teach such thing which's why I tend to finish some sentences with prepositions like: who do you work with? Thanks to you I know I must say: with whom do you work? But I also know it's rare to see someone saying that perfect and correct English. Everytime I watch TV series see this kinda informal use.
That is a very interesting video. Thank you very much Lucy for your efforts. I wish I had such a good teacher like you in school. It would be nice to see more videos that focus on idioms and slang.

(and I'm very proud that I understand everything what you said even without looking on screen! I made an online test yesterday. 50 minutes: read and hear. C2... not so sure about this, but so proud))))

Thank you for the video Lucy. I’m an American that had to take speech therapy as a child, I couldn’t pronounce my R’s and after a year I could speak decently, tried learning Spanish but still can’t roll the R’s. Love the channel and everything language or speech based❤
Hello, Lucy :) Thanks a lot for these wonderful tips🙏 Learning slang is my cup of tea :) So, I'd be chuffed, if you dedicated a video for that :) Greetings from Türkiye👋 Çağlar.
You know you've made it when you can understand a New Yorker. As a fellow NYer myself, when I moved to Florida I had to really slow down my speech speed for even native speakers to understand me. 😆
You're spot on. When I moved to England many years ago I could hardly understand anybody in shops and on the streets where I leave. They speak very differently to what I was used to (American English and Standard British English). At one point I questioned my entire English skills, as I genuinely struggled to understand most people around me. Surrouding myself by native speakers is what really helped me to understand them more easily and speak the way they speak.
Oh how I understand the pain 😁 My first week in Scotland went smoothly and I didn't encounter any problems understanding people. Then I met a true Scotsman. I stood there with eyes wide open and asked my fried afterwards if he understood any of it. The best part was, a year later I had a boss from Glasgow. I couldn't understand him sometimes no mater how hard I tried. I learned to nod and smile 😊
Im American and even I have trouble with Scotts. It's said my great grandfather spoke with such a strong accent that he had to have his children translate for him.
Lucy! You’re amazing! I’ve been recommending your videos to my students. I adore your British accent, it’s the one I use in class ( I’ve been listening to British music since my early teenage years and I was in Brighton for my training course for two months so Ive had the accent in the genes 😅) and my students go “your accent is different “ as they’re used to hear American accent from previous teachers or English with no connected speech nor contractions. Keep the superb work. ❤Tunisia
So true what she said in the beginning. I too understand her perfectly without ever looking at the subtitles...but British movies and soaps is a different ballgame altogether

Best English teacher on the Earth!Love Lucy so much❤❤
Your a best english teacher ❤❤❤
The best.. and not A best
Great option! :)
Hello, I'm from Brazil, and... I started my studies in English (focused on British speech) less than a month ago, and I'm already watching your video and almost understanding everything. (I'm sorry for any writing errors hahaha); I really liked your video.
Спасибо за прекрасный урок
Ur style of teaching is so loving
I really need a B2 English level lesson in order to take my English into the next level....Anyways thank you so much for being a lovely teacher throughout my entire journey ❤️🙏

I remember how after american english book, read british english book! As a non-native speaker... it was soooo mindblowing! I learned so much idioms! (and I'm very proud that I understand everything what you said even without looking on screen! I made an online test yesterday. 50 minutes: read and hear. C2... not so sure about this, but so proud))))
That's very good and if we connect with you and understand
Please make a video on Slangs,Idioms and phrasal verbs .
Thanks in advance Ma'am!!!🌈
Your accent is clear and soft. I understood almost all words. By the way nice sweater :)
Audiobooks with your pronunciation, please 🍰☕
I don't know if you already have a video on idioms and phrases or not but after watching this I'd surely want to have one. Please make one if possible.
Informal contractions would be a really nice topic video to improve.
Thank you so ch for your lessons! 😊
That's a great idea! :)
Thank you for the video Lucy. I’m an American that had to take speech therapy as a child, I couldn’t pronounce my R’s and after a year I could speak decently, tried learning Spanish but still can’t roll the R’s. Love the channel and everything language or speech based❤
There is no point to study English at school coz we have to learn everything over again! 😂 thanks Lucy ❤
Teacher Lo C, Great Personalty for UA-camr💘💯❤
That's very good and if we connect with you and understand as per accent.
The form "she didn't know to whom to give the gift" is more intuitive for me because it is similar in french.
Thank God❤❤
I have finally found someone who speaks purest form of English.
Iam from India This is very usefully video Thanks miss Lucy
Hello, Lucy :) Thanks a lot for these wonderful tips🙏 Learning slang is my cup of tea :) So, I'd be chuffed, if you dedicated a video for that :) Greetings from Türkiye👋 Çağlar.
Great option!
Definitely yes for a video about slang and idioms .... it's always a pleasure to learn something from you lucy..
Definitely, a video about slang and idioms would be fantastic. Great job!
Excellent option!
your lesson was so important ❤
If you can understand Lee Mack when he's joking around, you can understand everything! 😂
Haha, exactly!
讲的太好了,发音很好听,想起中学时期的英语老师那发音简直就是鸭叫!
It's easier to understand American accent than the British
On the contrary, American is more complicated than British.
Americans pronounce T as D, it makes American more hard to do.😂
For real dude, it's way confusing and more complicated
I'm french and I discover your channel just now and I'm amazed the way I can easily understand you Oo
عندي قاموس إنجليزي عربي في قناتي 🎉... مرحباً بكم...
I love Lucy as my teacher becuse she spoke slightly slower pace so I can learn well
That is the most clean english I've ever heard! 😍
You know you've made it when you can understand a New Yorker. As a fellow NYer myself, when I moved to Florida I had to really slow down my speech speed for even native speakers to understand me. 😆
Lol, i understand it, my region has the same problem. Portuguese natives speaker's can't understand our "minerês"
I'm Learing From Bangladesh, Your English is Very Understandable and Clear as Well!
I'm from Algeria 🇩🇿, l will do my best to learn more with you ,thanks a bunch
I love you Lucy and your charismatic way of teaching! Keep up the excellent work and thank you so very much!
Thank you Lucy... ❤❤❤ keep it up. I'm learning so much from you.
Me too ❣️💕 she's so cute And her voice ☺️
❤Tunisia
Si todo el mundo hablara el inglés como Lucy, todo me sería más fácil.
So true what she said in the beginning. I too understand her perfectly without ever looking at the subtitles...but British movies and soaps is a different ballgame altogether
Thanks you for teaching me.I like your teaching styles. I like your channel and video. The best teacher.
Thanks Lucy, so kind.
I prefer to listen how to improve my english well in each details. I totally agree what you said to fluently speak english. So thank you for making me enjoy learning it.😊
