Every kid in the mid-1960's loved this movie. Something about the atmosphere, the scarecrow's frightening mask, the galloping horses made it unforgettable.
For sure. I loved this series as a thirteen year old. Literature is full of heroes who aid and help the poor and downtrodden. If only it could be that way in real life. Robin Hood, King Arthur, Zorro, on and on. If only there were real such heroes.
One of the very best Disney live action films ever made! I loved it when I saw it many years ago and I still love it now. It stands up very well even today. The acting is excellent, the scenes are effective, it has great music and the story is wonderful. And a great hero! He was one of the very earliest "superheroes". The story makes sense and hangs together well, which is more than I can say for a lot of modern movies. Not only was it a good, exciting story, but it also stuck in a bit of real history: showing that while the Americans were definitely abused by the English Crown, the English poor were treated even worse. What I liked was that the history part of it was used very effectively, as part of the story, not in a preachy manner or in a way that slowed down the flow of the story. And that theme song has stuck in my head for decades! I would recommend it to anyone and I applaud it being put here on UA-cam where it can be seen.
Great analysis! Love this movie! I grew up watching it and yes that them song has stuck in my head for decades! Such a unique movie with great acting snd storyline, which are lacking these days. Sadly its a very hard to find movie. We had to put in a special request with Disney just to get a copy. Glad to see it here on UA-cam for free now!
I used to emulate this show outside, the song, I could only remember the words "Scarecrow, scarecrow!" I just remember thinking it was such a cool show. We spent so much time outside as children in the early to mid-60's. All of the 60's as a matter of fact. We were skinny as rails. Very little time inside cause there were no video games. A better world.
I saw a comment on FB regarding this show and immediately the song went through my head. I haven't seen or thought about it since I was 9...and I remembered it almost verbatim...Good memories!
what a masterpiece.very gritty as well for disney.geoffrey keen was great casting he had played an unforgettable israel hands in treasure island.very good period feel and as for magoohan he is just superb.
Best thing Disney ever did. That includes every feature length film animated or acted. Patrick McGoohan must surely be the most underrated actor ever to appear on screen. First this tour de force as the kings arch nemesis the Scarecrow. Later his incomparable performance as the British King Longshanks in Braveheart. McGoohan should have won the Oscar in a walk for the latter. His Scarecrow rendering is at least worthy of a nomination. His only weakness as an actor was that he didn't appear in more films. That was a grievous oversight by every casting director in Hollywood. What an actor.
Part of it may have been his devout Roman Catholicism. When considered for the role of James Bond, he turned it down, not wanting to be associated with a character who was such a womanizer. During his run as John Drake in "Danger Man", his character was never involved with any illicit romance.
@thomasthomas2418 Great insight into the marvelous talent and character of Patrick McGoohan. I had no idea he was offered the role of James Bond. Only to turn it down!! What a look and style he possessed to dominate that character. In my opinion, he had a more natural persona than any actor who ever played the role. EAT YOUR HEART OUT SEAN CONNERY!! His morality and selflessness only make him that much more admirable as a man. McGoohan had the talent and unaffected polish to rival any actor to ever appear on screen. Clearly, he had a more noble agenda than selfish personal glory.
Patrick MchGoohan packs a punch in unexpected, but charming ways. Expressive, explosive, and courteous in his actions and personality. His role in the cult classic “The Prisoner” is phenomenal as is every other performance he’s done.
@exempligratia101 I believe a somewhat similar acting style to Mc Goohan is that of the current top tier British actor Benedict Cumberbatch. His performance as Khan in the remake of the famed Star Trek character was satanic!! It actually buries the original rendering by Ricardo Montalban. I understand he has portrayed Sherlock Holmes on screen, as well as his role as Marvel's Doctor Strange. Overall, though, McGoohan had more of an innate charm and greater depth than Cumberbatch. I personally would have loved to see him perform Shakespeare. What a voice and gracious dignity. And a master class in class, off camera as well.
7:28 Just as I felt when first viewed at eight years old. This still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Music adding to the bravery & honor of Scarecrow the leader !! 15:35
im only 20 but I used to watch this frequently with my grandpa who grew up in the 60s. always loved this and can remember riding on his bike as a kid reenacting the scenes in this with him. so happy I can rewatch it with him again on here. thanks!
I was eleven years old when this series came out and I remember all of it watching it over and over absolutely the best Disney series there ever was good for the entire family to enjoy.
OMG! I can't believe someone posted this! the best Disney movie ever made! I lovedthis as a kid. I have a bootleg copy on dvd since Disney only released a limitededition for ridiculous price! the quality on this is excellent! WATCH THIS NOW!
i feel the same way i loved this trilogy they dont make them like this davie crockett and the swamp fox the fighting prince of donigall and the one roger mobley was in was the best debra jane lerner ps i forgot to mention the horsemasters
Wow !!!! Thrilled someone uploaded this. I remember this as a kid watching Sunday night Disney. Arguably one of the best things they ever did. I remembered the song. The imposing image of the Scarecrow burned so strong in my memory as a child, I made a Scrarecrow outfit for a Halloween party a number of years ago. Even now, the Scarecrow is an imposing figure
Thank you for posting this. This was one my favorites as a child growing up in the 90s. I only saw it twice growing up before recording on Disney with commercials and all on a VHS tape that lost it magnetically well before '98 and now its well too hard to find a copy of this now a days.
Blimey. I'm literally atremble with excitement. I've been knocking about for years looking for uploads of this Disney hero. Peace be upon you, mon ami.
One of the best memories of my childhood. I've always remembered the melody. And some of the lyrics. Too bad Disney doesn't produce classic stories like this any more. Now days it's all special effects and no real stories with morals. But , thank you for posting this. 😊😊😊❤❤❤ 17:22
This is so good it gets better when I haven't watched it in awhile. Over the years I've seen it so many times and each time it seems to be even better and that's extraordinary. One of my all time favorites. Patrick McGoohan never played better role and I saw him in Secret Agent Man. He was THE SCARECROW.
I didn't see this when it was first aired but I love it! I live on the Kent coast, close to beaches that still have smugglers caves & tunnels in the chalk cliffs, so researched a lot of the history of smuggling in the UK. The majority of it occurred in Kent & Sussex & the first smuggling took place in the 13th century, when wool was smuggled from Romney Marsh to Europe, avoiding paying tax at ports on the South coast. The Scarecrow appears to give a very accurate portrayal of the constant battles between excise men & entire towns & villages involved in the trade, battles that lasted until the early 19th century!
The only slight error is Dr Syn's reference to, "St Margaret's Bay, this side of Dover". As St Margarets Bay is the other side of Dover from Dymchurch, I wonder if they meant St Mary's Bay, which is just a couple of miles from Dymchurch? Excellent film nonetheless!
Missed this old Disney classic. Pure entertainment! Thanks for posting. Great upload with good video & audio. 👍 PS. Always liked Patrick McGoohan and the characters he chose to portray, in this film an English vicar Dr. Syn who becomes the 'scarecrow' by night to lead a group of rebels to thwart King George III's taxmen.
Wow, haven't seen this in a very long time. Some great memories of being in front of the t.v. with the family and Disney on Sunday nights. Their shows were so exciting/scary as a kid watching it, but always good. Disney should definitely bring some type of regular family programming back on Sunday nights. Scarecrow of Romney Marsh was the absolute best. Loved that series. Not sure how you found it, but a big Thanks for posting this Joseph !
Agreed. The last time I saw it was on the old "Disney's Vault" that the Disney channel used to show overnights as they were abandoning their classic offerings.
I love the touch that after delivering the Scarecrow's warning in the church, Vicar Syn questions, "What authority has this man among you to give such orders?"
Remember watching this 5 oclock sunday,s in new zealand just before the news at 6 wonderful stuff Walt Disney knew how to make stories like this for a song so original, iconic just wanted to be like them
I am glad I came across this. I hate superhero movies and the stuff today. I look for good stuff from the past. This is really good. Shame Hollywood is worthless now, but at least there are these old movies. Thanks for putting it up.
Why do we loose such intense joy as children. I remember sprawling out on my aunt’s warmed tile floor ( she had the old fashioned hot water pipes in the floor) in her living room excited to watch her new color tv ( 1964 one of the first) to watch the Disney channel on Sunday evening. Each stage of life has its challenges and joys. Why we loose the pure joy of living we experienced as children is beyond me. But we do! Prayer helps. God wants us to have joy, which I do at times, just not at the same level of that child of 6 excitingly waiting for the Disney channel!
That's because we had no responsibility as a child .... we just played at everything... everything was an adventure.. Loved your comment....wish l had you for my childhood friend. Prayed for you, Bill! God bless.
Julie Hawkins I can understand how a child can be frightened. Over here in the colonies, I loved everything about this show. And of course, Tinkerbell. Wish they had made more episodes or a remake that doesnt mess things up. Peace and love to all Julie, and to all.
Wow there's Patrick McGoohan (Dangerman) George Cole (long before he received his nice little earner in minder) and Tony Brittan (Fern Brittan's Dad ) amazing show !
In a further comment, McGoohan's Scarecrow is so damn bad that you couldn't top it if you had Batman and Superman in the same film. Which we have!! No hero for right will ever top this protector of victims of the crown. All the kings horses and all the kings men went stumbling and tumbling again and again!! Even better, the good Vicar by day never harmed a single adversary. Just scared the living shit out of them!! As for his performance, McGoohan shines in a way singularly unique compared to his Magnum Opus as Longshanks in Braveheart. His Scarecrow doesn't butcher the misguided that are out to hang him and his men. While not so good King Longshanks threw his own son's boyfriend out a castle window!! This speaks to this fabulous actors range and power. And why Dr Syn Alias the Scarecrow is the greatest good guy, bad guy film since the invention of film.
I've been dreaming of finding this somewhere! A very hearty thankyou from someone who grew up watching this classic the first time (and repeats). (Also see the actor who played the young Ebenezer Scrooge in the Christmas Carol movie with Alister Sim. He's Dr. Syn's sextent but that may be his name, will need to watch further. Oh my gosh, another Scrooge character: Scrooge's partner, Marley.)
I went to Romney Marsh on my last trip to the UK. It has the same chilling atmosphere now as it did when they filmed there. In fact, Walt Disney paid for the restoration of the church you see in this episode.
One wonders what Walt Disney would say about the entertainment world of today? We had to wait till the following Sunday for the next episode, wow memories.
I think he would be very very sad, probably in shock. I was brought up on Disney , drive in theatre with the whole family every time a new Disney movie came out. Born in 63, the Family Band, Happiest millionaire, Absent minded professor , all Kurt Russell movies, etc. sometimes it seems as if this is not the same country at all. I would like to go back to the old one. Kids today couldn’t sit still long enough for good story telling.
Oh! The horror of watching TV before the age of video recorders! Part One of these episodes of _Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color_ aired February 9, 1964 … *THE SAME DAY AND TIME THAT THE BEATLES FIRST APPEARED ON **_THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW!!!!_*
@@teller1290 Irish people were once considered undesirable aliens in America, so it was lucky for McGoohan (and us) that society was more accepting of "diversity" by his lifetime. If "pc bs" means more people get treated with fairness and respect, .long may it reign.
This is so weird to watch because my town is where Dr Syn originated from so seeing a full Disney film of it is so surreal. I didn't realise that it was that famous I just thought it was just our folklore
Several of the actors are famous. The young man who portrays the Scarecrow (Dr. Syn)'s right hand man portrays a young Ebenezer Scrooge in the 1952 film of that name (with the legendary Alistair Sim as the older Scrooge), and several of the male actors later went on to be in James Bond films.
I was reminiscing about this, and found it as thrilling as it was. The costumes on most were very well done. The lady stars had some false eyelash issues but overall very good.
Watch scarecrow back in the 60s on wonderful world of Disney. Great shows Daniel Boone and Zorro and many more that was about the time Roseti"s water ice or Mr Softer would come around. The water ice man nothing like a water ice and Soft pretzel. And Mr Softer was the best we didn't get them every week. My father was a very hard worker and that was a treat for us. Great times and Great parents.
I always thought the English people love King George. But they were tax just like us Americans. So we were all not liking the King of England. And we all wanted our freedom. And Zorro and the scrow fought for the same thing freedom and fair tax's. And I also love watching Disney movies.❤❤❤❤
When this aired in 1964 the show was called "The Magical World of Disney". I believe the original episodes ran longer than what has been posted here so I presume this is an edited version. The UK theatrical release (1963) was even shorter having been edited down to 98 min.
Patrick McGoohan said the two Disney films he made (this and The Many Lives of Thomasina), as well as the John Drake series (Danger Man, Secret Agent) were his favorites. He can look and sound so urbane, it seems an incongruous remark, but he was actually quite a gentle person. He turned down a James Bond role offer because he didn't like casual sex in movies. Wonderful actor, with a sense of humor seen in his eyes even in serious roles. BY THE WAY Scarecrow of Romney Marsh is now included on DVD in the "Disney Treasures" DVD collection.
Loved it so much as a kid that it inspired me to buy the Thorndyke Buchannan book it was based on and then the entire original 7 book series by Thorndyke. Just bought the novelization of the Disney series. One of my great disappointments of Disney Plus. They promised to open the vault but haven't.
Every kid in the mid-1960's loved this movie. Something about the atmosphere, the scarecrow's frightening mask, the galloping horses made it unforgettable.

The village is STILL a great tourist attraction. My eldest sister visited the village years ago

When you saw this a half-century ago and still remember it, they've done good work.
I saw a comment on FB regarding this show and immediately the song went through my head. I haven't seen or thought about it since I was 9...and I remembered it almost verbatim...Good memories!

That must have been murder on his throat!
Great Disney film. I miss these.
One of my favorite shows ever!
My cousin and I played scarecrow for weeks after this aired when we were kids!
This is the kind of stuff I watch that as a kid. It was always fun . Great .

Best Walt Disney movie ever
God bless for posting this. I only saw glimpses of it as a kid in the early 60s, but it was burned into my memory.
Loved this and all classic Disney movies

I found a VHS copy on e-Bay.
I totally agree! Why isn't it featured on the Disney Channel?
I grew up on this! It's 25 years older than I am, but I fell in love with it at a young age! Classic Disney has a special place in my❤
What a blast from the past. Remember watching it on TV as a youngster.
I love this movie. Saw it when I was a very little child. I was 6 years old
I can remember watching this as a child
Mr. Mips is an absolute hoot! I absolutely love him!❤
Had a nice grittiness that disney usually never has
Wow !!!! Thrilled someone uploaded this. I remember this as a kid watching Sunday night Disney. Arguably one of the best things they ever did. I remembered the song. It just popped into my head one day recently and I decided to check you tube under "Patrick McGoohan" to see if I could find and Bingo !!!! Thanks for uploading. Killer actor too. Hey, Chris, I remember watching it to on a Sunday night, 6.30 on NBN 3 Newcastle
HALLOWEEN one year, my 2 brothers and I went to a party as Scarecrow, Hellspite & Curlew.
Naturally, being homemade costumes we won 1st prize
The imposing image of the Scarecrow burned so strong in my memory as a child, I made a Scrarecrow outfit for a Halloween party a number of years ago.
Even now, the Scarecrow is an imposing figure
Thank you, forever etched in my memory. Yea! Outstanding on so many levels.
Thank you for posting this. This was one my favorites as a child growing up in the 90s. I only saw it twice growing up before recording on Disney with commercials and all on a VHS tape that lost it magnetically well before '98 and now its well too hard to find a copy of this now a days.
Fantastic production! Also love seeing George Cole and Patrick mcGoohan. He has such a lovely voice

This brought back memories. Thanks for sharing. Great story.
Best thing Disney ever did. And, arguably, MacGoohan as well; I loved him in "The Prisoner," but this was killer.
I loved it too as a kid. Use to dress up at Halloween like him for several years!
Takes me back to the early mid. 60s. Great childhood not crazy as today.
It's still great
@@nicknorthable It sure is!
This and the Gallagher episodes have been my favorite shows from The Wonderful World of Disney.
One of the best memories of my childhood. I've always remembered the melody. And some of the lyrics. Too bad Disney doesn't produce classic stories like this any more. Now days it's all special effects and no real stories with morals. But , thank you for posting this. 😊😊😊❤❤❤ 17:22
Ahh,this brings back memories!
Yes!!! I've been looking for this series forever!!
Maybe I will try that next year.

Missed this old Disney classic. Pure entertainment! Thanks for posting. Great upload with good video & audio. 👍
PS. Always liked Patrick McGoohan and the characters he chose to portray, in this film an English vicar Dr. Syn who becomes the 'scarecrow' by night to lead a group of rebels to thwart King George III's taxmen.
"Scarecrow! Scarecrow! The soldiers of the King feared his name.

His scream in the theme song used to mess me up as a child. But, still watched it.

A remake of the George Arliss film from 30s called DOCTOR SIN .An excellent action movie both of them.
I remember watching this when I was young with my mom and dad good bye mom and dad😢
I was madly and forever in love with Sean Scully (John) for about a year when I was fifteen and saw this on The Wonderful World of Disney.
They need to add this to Disney plus asap. Plus would be great to have a sound clip of his famous laugh.
Nice clear copy SIR Thank you
I've been dreaming of finding this somewhere!
George Cole, an extremely well-known and well-loved British actor who died a couple of years ago.
I went to Romney Marsh on my last trip to the UK. It has the same chilling atmosphere now as it did when they filmed there. In fact, Walt Disney paid for the restoration of the church you see in this episode.
I remember this on Sunday night's I think 7 o clock but it was the last thing before bedtime. I think I had to beg a little. Lol
This scared the crap out of me when I was little. That mask and laugh.
Watched it as a 10yr old 1976 Disney Sunday night. And was played ‘scarecrows’ with kids in playground every day at school …
The Marsh abounds with the Gentleman Sir.
The man who played Mr. Mipps is a riot!
George Cole aka Arthur Daley from 'Minder'
this is way better then the Crap that disney produces in 2024
I'm 64 and I remembered the song and that laugh. The character was creepy but we'd rip up rags, hang them on our shirts and play Scarecrow.
If there was ever a movie that should be remade, this is it!!!
It would be ruined by pc bs and "diversity." I hope they never touch it. I just wish there were more parts done by Disney. RIP Patrick.
@@teller1290 Irish people were once considered undesirable aliens in America, so it was lucky for McGoohan (and us) that society was more accepting of "diversity" by his lifetime. If "pc bs" means more people get treated with fairness and respect, .long may it reign.
As much as I may like to see that happen, I'm sure I will be disapointed
in the groovy 70's house of my yoot, Sunday night was always Disney (Saturday was Emergency) and when i first saw this it spooked me good.
Excuse me, what’s a yoot? 😂😂
Will some one please please put the ,, glacier fox's, from Disney on utube soon??. that would be awesome ❤️❤️❤️. thank you so much...
This is so weird to watch because my town is where Dr Syn originated from so seeing a full Disney film of it is so surreal. I didn't realise that it was that famous I just thought it was just our folklore
Crazeemay i live in new romney near where this film/miniseries was supposed to be set.
Getting to Romney Marsh is on my bucket list
I give you top marks just for the serendipity of your situation. Thanks for checking in.
@@romneymarsher1 Might add... there are marsh lights that sometime glow on the marshes. Also local ghost stories there....
That’s McGoohan’s #1 laugh from Fallout(The Prisoner)...even though this predates it.
The Joker of his time. “And he’d laugh...to split his side.”
Bring back the Scarecrow !
Pizza and mr.softee..
Soft Pretzels..
You gotta be close to Philly...Rocky Yo..yo.Yo..
From Levittown PA
